I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone." ⁴ And they give Yaaqov all the strange elohim in their hand and all their noserings in their ears; and Yaaqov buries them under the oak by Shechem: ⁵ And they pulled up stakes . And the terror of God was on the cities all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob. ⁶ And Jacob came to Luz in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people with him. ⁷ And he built there an altar, and called the place El-Beth-el,—because, there, God revealed himself unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother, ⁸ And Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Beth-el under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon- bacuth. ⁹ Now when Jacob was on his way from Paddan-aram, God came to him again and, blessing him, said, ¹⁰ God said to him: "Your name is Jacob. You shall no longer be called Jacob. Israel shall be your name." Thus He called him Israel. ¹¹ God said to him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body. ¹² "The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you. I will give the land to your descendants after you." ¹³ Then God went up from him at the place where he had spoken with him. ¹⁴ Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it. ¹⁵ And Jacob called the name of the place where God had talked with him, Beth-el. ¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And when her labor was the most difficult the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid for you have another son." ¹⁸ As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin. ¹⁹ Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). ²⁰ And Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it is the pillar of Rachel's grave until today. ²¹ Israel moved on again. He pitched his tent by the tower of Eder. ²² While Israel lived in that region, Reuben went to bed with his father's concubine Bilhah. Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons. ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ The sons of Rachel's slave Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ The sons of Zilpah, the female servant of Leah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram. ²⁷ And Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had been living. ²⁸ Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old. ²⁹ And Isaac breathed his last, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

⁸ From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent. Bethel was on the west and Ai on the east. He built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

³ He traveled from place to place from the Negev until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier. ⁴ This was where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.

⁸ He said: "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I am running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place "the LORD will provide," for which reason it is said today, "on the mountain of the LORD it shall be provided."

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob." ⁴² When Rebekah heard about Esau’s plans to kill Jacob, she called her younger son, Jacob. She said: »Your brother Esau is comforting himself by planning to kill you. ⁴³ So now, my son, do what I say: go quickly to Haran, to my brother Laban; ⁴⁴ Stay with him a few days, until your brother's fury turns away; ⁴⁵ "When your brother’s anger is gone and he has forgotten what you did to him, I will let you know. Then you may come back. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

¹⁰ Jacob left Beer-sheba and traveled toward Haran. ¹¹ He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep. ¹² He dreamed and saw a stairway set upon the earth, and its top reached to heaven. Behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. ¹³ And he saw the Lord by his side, saying, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: I will give to you and to your seed this land on which you are sleeping. ¹⁴ "Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Every family on earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants. ¹⁵ "Remember, I am with you. I will watch over you wherever you go. I will also bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I do what I have promised you." ¹⁶ When Jacob was awaked out of his sleep, he said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware." ¹⁷ And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven. ¹⁸ Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had under his head. He set it up as a marker and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza. ²⁰ Jacob made a vow. He said: "If God will be with me and will watch over me on my trip and give me food to eat and clothes to wear, ²¹ "and if I return safely to my father's home, then the LORD will be my God. ²² And this stone which I have put up for a pillar will be God's house: and of all you give me, I will give a tenth part to you.

³ Then the Lord said to Jacob, Go back to the land of your fathers, and to your relations, and I will be with you.

¹³ I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you vowed a vow to me. Now arise, get out from this land and return to the land of your nativity.

⁷ And he built there an altar, and called the place El-Beth-el,—because, there, God revealed himself unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother,

¹⁵ When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he tried to kill Moses. So Moses fled from Pharaoh, settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.

³⁶ For the LORD shall judge his people, and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none left, slave or free.

¹⁵ He will call upon me and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.

⁴ When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it, for he takes no pleasure in fools. Fulfill what you vow! ⁵ It is better not to vow, than to vow and not perform. ⁶ Do not allow your mouth to lead you into sin. Do not protest before the messenger that this was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

⁴ He struggled with the angel and won. Jacob cried and pleaded with him. Jacob found him at Bethel, and he talked with him there.

¹⁵ "Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him who brings good tidings. Who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah and perform your vows! The wicked will no more pass through (invade) you. They will be completely destroyed."

¹⁹ For I know him that he will command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do after right and conscience, that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that he hath promised him."

¹⁹ When Laban went to shear his sheep, Rachel stole her father's household idols.

³⁴ And Rachel had taken the household idols and put them into the camel's saddle; and she sat on them. And Laban felt around all the tent, but did not find.

² And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.

²⁴ All the citizens of the city agreed with what Hamor and Shechem proposed. Then all the males were circumcised. ²⁵ It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.

²² While Israel lived in that region, Reuben went to bed with his father's concubine Bilhah. Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons.

¹⁰ And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. They must wash their clothes,

¹⁴ When Moses went down from the mountain to the people, he consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes.

³ You shall have no other gods before me. ⁴ Thou shalt not make for thyself an idol, nor the likeness of any thing, which is in the heaven above, or in the earth below, or in the waters under the earth;

¹³ "Be careful to do all things that I have said to you; and do not invoke the name of other gods, neither let them be heard out of your mouth.

⁵ "‘Those who touch his bed must wash their clothes and their bodies. They will be unclean until evening.

¹⁶ But if he do not wash his clothes, and his body, he shall bear his iniquity.

²⁴ And on the seventh day you must wash your clothes, and you shall be clean; and after that you may come into the camp.

⁷ You shall have no other gods before me.

¹⁴ Do not follow other gods, from the gods of the peoples around you.

²⁵ "Burn the carved images of their gods with fire. Do not covet the silver or the gold that is on them. Do not take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it. It is an abomination to the LORD your God.

²⁸ or a curse if you don't obey the commands of the LORD your God, by turning from the way that I'm commanding you today and following other gods whom you have not known."

¹⁶ They provoked him to jealousy over foreigners and to anger over detestable things.

⁷ That way, you will not mingle with those nations that remain among you, nor mention the name of their gods, nor make oaths by them, nor serve them, nor worship them.

² And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD the God of Israel: 'Long ago your ancestors—Terah the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor—lived beyond the river, and they served other gods.

¹⁵ And if it seems evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve, whether the gods whom your fathers served Beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

²⁰ If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster to you; he will destroy you after he has done good to you."

²³ Joshua said, "Therefore abandon the foreign gods that are among you, and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."

¹⁶ When they put away their foreign gods and served the LORD, he brought Israel's misery to an end.

¹⁵ Naomi said to her: "Ruth, your sister-in-law went back to her people and her gods. Go back home with her.

³ And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, saying, If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, put aside the alien gods from among you, and the Ashtoreths. And prepare your heart to the LORD, and serve Him only, and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

²³ "And who is like your people, like Israel, the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, to make a name for himself, and to carry out for them great and awe-inspiring accomplishments, driving out nations and their gods in front of your people, whom you redeemed to yourself from Egypt?

¹⁰ And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh shall return to you, and you shall be cleansed.

¹² Aren't Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn't I wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. ¹³ And his servants came near and spoke to him and said, My father, if the prophet had told you to do a great thing, would you not have done it? How much rather then, when he says to you, Wash and be clean?

²⁹ However each nation made gods of their own and put them in the houses of the high places which those of Samaria had made, each nation in their city in which they dwelt.

²⁶ For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.

⁵ When their time of feasting had concluded, Job would rise early in the morning to send for them and consecrate them to God. He would offer a burnt offering for each one, because Job thought, "Perhaps my children sinned by cursing God in their hearts." Job did this time and again.

² Wash me from my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin.

⁷ Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

² I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart. ³ I will set no vile thing before my eyes. I hate the deeds of faithless men. They will not cling to me. ⁴ A perverse heart will be far from me. I will have nothing to do with evil. ⁵ Whoso slandereth his neighbour in secret, him will I destroy; whoso is haughty of eye and proud of heart, him will I not suffer. ⁶ My eyes will be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He who walks in a perfect way, he will minister to me. ⁷ He who practices deceit won't dwell within my house. He who speaks falsehood won't be established before my eyes.

¹ Guard your steps when you go to the house of God; draw near to listen rather than to offer a sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.

¹⁶ "Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil.

¹¹ Get out of her my people! Touch no unclean thing! Come out from it and be pure, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.

⁷ "How can I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me, and they have sworn by those who are not gods. But I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and flocked to the house of a prostitute.

²⁷ I see your adulteries and your neighings - the intrigue of your whoredom and your abominations on the hills in the fields! Woe to you, O Yeru Shalem! Purify you not yourselves? Until when?

²⁰ Can a man make gods to himself? But they are not gods!

³¹ Cast away from you all your sins by which you have sinned; and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will you die, O house of Israel?

⁷ And I said to them, Cast away every man the abominations of his eyes and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

²⁵ I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your filthiness, and from all your idols.

⁴ As they drank the wine, they praised gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

¹⁰ Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not every one of you." ¹¹ For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said 'You are not all clean.'

²⁶ And as you see and hear, not only in Ephesus, but in nearly the whole province of Asia, Paul has persuaded a great number of people to turn away. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.

⁷ Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to revel in idolatry.”

¹⁵ What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? ¹⁶ What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.” ¹⁷ Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

¹ Since we have these promises, dear friends, let's cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit by becoming mature in our holy fear of God.

⁸ Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.

²² let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded.

¹ Therefore, ridding yourselves of all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, ² Like newborn infants, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

²³ save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others, show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.

⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would have sent me away with nothing in my hands. But God has seen my troubles and the work of my hands, and this night he kept you back.

⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and camels, into two bands;

²⁴ And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him till the morning.

¹⁵ Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

¹³ I will come to your house with burnt offerings. I will fulfill my vows to you ¹⁴ which my lips promised, and my mouth spoke, when I was in distress.

¹ {Of David} Praise the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me praise his holy name. ² Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. ³ who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, ⁴ who redeems your life from corruption; who crowns you with mercy and compassion; ⁵ who satisfies your desire with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

⁶ Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

⁸ Let them give thanks to the LORD for his gracious love and his awesome deeds for mankind.

¹ I love the LORD because he has heard my prayer for mercy; ² Because he has turned his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

¹⁶ LORD, truly I am your servant. I am your servant, the son of your handmaid. You have freed me from my chains. ¹⁷ I will bring you a thanksgiving offering and call on the name of the LORD! ¹⁸ I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people,

¹⁹ Open for me the gates of righteousness, and I will go in at them and give thanks to the Lord. ²⁰ This is the gate of the LORD, through which the righteous will enter. ²¹ I will give thee thanks, for thou hast answered me, and art become my salvation. ²² The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

¹⁹ You will live in Zion, in Jerusalem. You will not cry anymore. the LORD will certainly have pity on you when you cry for help. As soon as he hears you, he will answer you.

² When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

² Aaron said to them, "Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me." ³ The people took off their gold earrings and handed them to Aaron. ⁴ And he took from their hand, and he shaped it with a tool, and he made it a cast-image bull calf, and they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt."

²⁰ He took the calf that they had made, burned it with fire, and ground it into powder. He scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

⁵ This is what you will do to them: tear down their altars, break their pillars, cut down their ritual pillars, and burn their carved idols in fire,

²⁵ Joshua made a covenant for the people that day at Shechem. He gave them laws and rules to follow. ²⁶ And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the Law of God, and took a great stone and set it up there under an oak by the sanctuary of the LORD.

²⁴ And he said to them: I desire one request of you: Give me the earlets of your spoils. For the Ismaelites were accustomed to wear golden earlets. ²⁵ They answered, “We will willingly give them.” They spread a garment, and every man threw the earrings of his plunder into it. ²⁶ The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents, the pendants and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks. ²⁷ Gideon made an ephod of it and put it in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel prostituted themselves by worshipping it there; and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house.

⁶ All the men of Shechem and Bethmillo got together and went to the sacred oak tree at Shechem, where they made Abimelech king.

²⁰ For on that day men will cast to the bats their abominations both of silver and gold, which they made to worship vanities;

²² Then you will dishonor your silver-plated idols and your gold-covered statues. You will throw them away like clothing ruined by stains. You will say to them: "Get out!"

¹³ "I will punish her for the days in which she burned incense to the Baals, when she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and went after her lovers, and forgot me," said the LORD.

³⁰ Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi: "You have brought trouble on me by making me loathsome to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Per'izzites. My numbers are few. If they gather themselves against me and attack my household I will be destroyed."

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the leaders of Moab were seized by trembling; all the dwellers of Canaan were melted. ¹⁶ Terror and dread falls on them. By the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone, until your people pass over, the LORD, until the people you have purchased pass over.

²⁷ I will send my terror before you, and will confuse all the people to whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.

²⁴ For I'll drive out nations before you, and enlarge your borders, and no one will covet your land when you go up to appear before the LORD your God three times a year.

²⁵ No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God will instill terror and fear of you throughout the entire land wherever you go, just as he promised you.

⁹ and said to the men, "I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence. ¹⁰ For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the reed sea before you, when you came out of Egypt, and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites on the other side Jordan; Sihon, and Og, which ye utterly destroyed. ¹¹ When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath.

¹ When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.

⁷ He took a yoke of oxen, cut them in pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers through all the territory of Israel: "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not come out and join Saul and Samuel!" The fear of the LORD fell on the people and they came out as one man.

¹⁵ Then panic struck the whole Philistine army, those in the camp, in the field, and among all the outposts and raiding parties, and the ground shook. There was panic.

¹⁴ And they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD had come on them. And they plundered all the cities, for there was much booty in them.

¹⁰ And the fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

⁵ There they are utterly terrified, for God is in the generation of the righteous.

¹⁹ And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza.

²² And this stone which I have put up for a pillar will be God's house: and of all you give me, I will give a tenth part to you.

³ Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me,

²² The house of Joseph also attacked Bethel: and the LORD was with them. ²³ For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza, ²⁴ The spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said to him: "Show us the entrance into the city, and we will show you mercy." ²⁵ He showed them the entrance into the city and they put the city to the sword, but they let the man go and all his family. ²⁶ The man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.

¹³ And he saw the Lord by his side, saying, I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: I will give to you and to your seed this land on which you are sleeping.

¹ And God said to Jacob, Rise up, go to Bethel and live there. And make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled before your brother Esau.

³ "After that let us go to Bethel. I will make an altar there to God, who answered me when I was troubled and who has been with me wherever I have gone."

¹⁵ Moses built an altar and named it "The LORD Is My Banner."

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it "The LORD is Peace." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

⁴ When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it, for he takes no pleasure in fools. Fulfill what you vow! ⁵ It is better not to vow, than to vow and not perform.

³⁵ A perimeter shall measure 18,000 units, and the name of the city from that time on shall be 'THE LORD IS THERE.'"

⁵⁹ So they sent their sister Rebekah and her servant with Abraham's servant and his men.

¹ And the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up from Egypt, and I brought you to the land that I had promised to your ancestors. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you.

⁵ They called that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to the LORD.

¹³ And they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh. And they fasted seven days.

⁷ And the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

¹ Abram was ninety-nine years old. the LORD appeared to him and said: "I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless.

¹ And the Lord appeared unto him in the grove of Mamre; while he was sitting at the door of the tent in the heat of the day.

² The LORD appeared to him, and said, "Do not go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about.

¹¹ The angel of God said to me in the dream, 'Jacob,' and I said, 'Here I am.' ¹² And he said, 'Lift up your eyes and see—all the rams mounting the flock are streaked, speckled, and dappled, for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. ¹³ I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you vowed a vow to me. Now arise, get out from this land and return to the land of your nativity.

¹ Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

²⁴ And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him till the morning. ²⁵ And when he saw that he could not prevail against him, he struck his hip socket, so that Jacob's hip socket was sprained as he wrestled with him. ²⁶ The man said, "Let me go, for the day breaks." Jacob said, "I won't let you go, unless you bless me." ²⁷ Then he asked: "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." ²⁸ And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for in your fight with God and with men you have overcome. ²⁹ Jacob said: "Please tell me your name." The man answered: "Why do you ask for my name?" Then he blessed Jacob there. ³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Penuel, because I saw God face to face, and my life is delivered.

² And God spoke to Israel in a vision of the night and said, Jacob! Jacob! And he said, Here I am. ³ Then he said, "I am the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there.

³ Jacob said to Joseph, God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me, ⁴ and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and will multiply you, and will make you a multitude of peoples. And I will give this land to your seed after you as a continual possession.

³ the LORD appeared to him from afar, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love. Therefore I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

² And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

⁵ And your name shall no longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.

¹⁵ God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah.

²⁷ Then he asked: "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." ²⁸ And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for in your fight with God and with men you have overcome.

³¹ Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes of Jacob's descendants, to whom the message from the LORD had come that "Israel shall be your name."

³⁴ To this day they do after their former customs: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes or after their ordinances, nor after the law and commandment that the LORD commanded the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel.

¹ God blessed Noah and his sons. He said: "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

² "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great. You will be a blessing.

¹⁶ "I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust, your offspring could be counted.

⁵ And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

⁵ And your name shall no longer be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations. ⁶ "I will make you very fruitful. I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. ⁷ "I will establish my covenant as a long lasting covenant between us. It will be for your descendants after you, for the generations to come. I will be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

¹⁶ "I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."

¹⁴ Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes round and Sarah will have a son.

¹⁸ Abraham will surely become a great and strong nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed on account of him.

¹⁷ '"I will certainly bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of their enemies' cities.

³ May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a company of peoples, ⁴ "He will bless you and your descendants as he blessed Abraham. You may take possession of this land, in which you have lived and which God gave to Abraham!"

¹⁴ "Your descendants will be like the dust on the earth. You will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. Every family on earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants.

¹² And you said, I will surely do you good, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

¹⁴ And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, so that he may send away your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved.

³ Then he said, "I am the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there.

⁷ And the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied and were many and were very, very numerous, and the land was filled with them.

³ "I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name, the LORD, I did not make myself known to them.

¹ the LORD (YHWH) spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai. It was the first day of the second month in the second year after leaving Egypt. He said: ² "Take a census of the entire Israelite community, numbering them by their clans and by ancestral houses. List the names of every male one-by-one, ³ From twenty years old and upwards, of all the men of Israel fit for war, and you shall number them by their troops, thou and Aaron. ⁴ A man from each tribe will be with you, each man the head of his family. ⁵ And these are the names of the men who will assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; ⁶ from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; ⁷ from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; ⁸ from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; ⁹ from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. ¹⁰ for the sons of Joseph:for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;" ¹¹ From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; ¹² from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; ¹³ from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; ¹⁴ from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; ¹⁵ For Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan. ¹⁶ These are the ones summoned from the community, the leaders of their ancestors' tribes; they are the heads of Israel's clans. ¹⁷ Moses and Aaron took the men who had been named ¹⁸ and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month. And they declared their ancestry after their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and ¹⁹ just as the LORD commanded Moses. And he counted them in the desert of Sinai. ²⁰ The descendants of Reuben, the first born of Israel: Their genealogies according to their clans and ancestral houses, as well as the names of all the men twenty years and above who can serve in the army were recorded individually. ²¹ Those registered with the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. ²² The descendants of Simeon: Their genealogies according to their clans and ancestral houses, as well as the names of all the men twenty years and above who can serve in the army were recorded individually. ²³ Those registered with the tribe of Simeon were 59, 300. ²⁴ Among the children of Gad, their generation in their kindreds and households of their fathers — when they were told by name, from twenty years and above, all that were mete for the war - ²⁵ Those registered with the tribe of Gad were 45, 650. ²⁶ Among the children of Judah, their generation in their kindreds and houses of their fathers — by the number of names, from twenty years and above, all that were able to war -

¹ There was a certain man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. ² which had two wives, the one called Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. ³ Now this man used to go up from his town year by year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD Almighty in Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD. ⁴ ⌊On⌋ the day Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. ⁵ But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, though the LORD had closed her womb. ⁶ Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. ⁷ This went on year after year when she went up to the house of the LORD; she provoked her, therefore she wept and didn't eat. ⁸ Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why are you crying and why don't you eat? Why are you upset? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" ⁹ So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the LORD's temple. ¹⁰ She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. ¹¹ She vowed a vow, and said, “the LORD of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.” ¹² As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli saw her mouth. ¹³ And she was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. ¹⁴ Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!” ¹⁵ "No, sir!" Hannah replied. "I'm a deeply troubled woman. I've drunk neither wine nor beer. I've been pouring out my soul before the LORD. ¹⁶ Do not take your servant to be a good-for-nothing woman: for my words have come from my stored-up sorrow and pain. ¹⁷ Eli answered: "Go in peace. May the God of Israel give you what you have asked of him." ¹⁸ She said, "Let your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. ¹⁹ They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. ²⁰ So it was that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel. She explained: "I asked the LORD for him." ²¹ So the man Elkanah went up with all his household to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to pay his vow. ²² But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Once the boy is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear before the LORD; and he will remain there forever." ²³ "Do what you want," Elkanah said to her. "Stay until you have weaned him, only may the LORD bring about what you have said." So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. ²⁴ Then, when she had weaned him, she brought him up with her to Shiloh, along with a three-year-old bull, a half-bushel of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh, and the boy was young. ²⁵ They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli. ²⁶ And she said, Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. ²⁷ I prayed for this boy, and the LORD granted me the request I asked of him. ²⁸ And I have returned him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he shall be given to the LORD. And he worshiped the LORD there.

¹⁸ "I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty."

¹⁴ After Lot had parted from Abram, the LORD said to Abram: »Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. ¹⁵ for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever. ¹⁶ "I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth. If anyone could count the dust, your offspring could be counted. ¹⁷ "Go walk through the length and breadth of the land that I am giving to you."

¹⁸ On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram. He said: "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates,

³ Stay in this land, and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands. And I will cause to rise My oath which I swore to your father Abraham. ⁴ I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and will give all these lands to your offspring. In your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed,

⁴ and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and will multiply you, and will make you a multitude of peoples. And I will give this land to your seed after you as a continual possession.

⁸ I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

¹ ¶ Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the sons of Israel; no one went out, and no one came in. ² And the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have given Jericho into your hand, and its king, and the mighty men of war. ³ March around the city, all the soldiers circling the city once. Do this for six days, ⁴ And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark. And the seventh day you shall go around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. ⁵ "When you hear a long blast with the ram’s horn, all the people will shout with a great shout. The wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up, every man straight in to the city." ⁶ And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven ram's horns in front of the ark of the LORD. ⁷ And he said to the people, Pass on, go around the city, and he who is shall go on before the ark of the LORD. ⁸ It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the LORD's covenant followed them. ⁹ The armed men marched ahead of the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the Ark. All the time the priests kept blowing the trumpets. ¹⁰ Joshua issued orders to the army: "You are not to shout or even let your voice be heard. Don't utter a word until I tell you to shout. Then shout!" ¹¹ And the ark of the LORD went around the city, circling once, and they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. ¹² Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests picked up the ark of the LORD. ¹³ The seven priests who carried the seven trumpets made from rams' horns preceded the ark of the LORD, blowing their trumpets constantly. The armed men preceded them, and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets continued to blow. ¹⁴ And the second day they went around the city once, and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. ¹⁵ They rose early at dawn on the seventh day and marched around the city seven times, just as they had before, except that on that day only they marched around the city seven times. ¹⁶ At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city! ¹⁷ The city and all that is in it will be devoted to the LORD; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house will live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. ¹⁸ Now as for you, everything that has been turned over for destruction. Don't covet or take any of these things. Otherwise, you'll make the camp of Israel itself an object worthy of destruction, and bring trouble on it. ¹⁹ But all of the silver and gold, and the items of bronze and iron, are holy to the LORD, and they must go to the LORD's treasury." ²⁰ So the army shouted and the trumpets were blown again. As soon as the army heard the sound of the trumpets, they shouted loudly and the wall collapsed. The army charged straight ahead into the city and captured it. ²¹ They turned over everyone in the city for destruction and executed them, including both men and women, young and old, and oxen, sheep, and donkeys.

¹ On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people and it was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God ² because they did not meet the Israelites with bread and water; but hired Balaam against them to curse them; but our God turned the curse into a blessing. ³ And when they heard the law, they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude. ⁴ Before this, Eliashib the priest had been placed over the rooms of the house of our God. He was a friend of Tobiah. ⁵ prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had formerly put the grain offering, the frankincense, the temple objects, tithes of grain, wine, and oil commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the offerings of the priests. ⁶ But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king, ⁷ And I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil which Eliashib did for Tobiah in preparing him a room in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah's household stuff out of the room. ⁹ Then I gave orders, and they made the rooms clean: and I put back in them the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the perfume. ¹⁰ I also learned that the allotments for the Levites had not been distributed. As a result, the Levites and singers who were responsible for the service had each left to go back to their fields. ¹¹ So I confronted the officials and asked, "Why is the temple of God neglected?" Then I gathered them together and put them back in their places. ¹² So all of Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and olive oil into the storehouses. ¹³ to the charge of Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites. And next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Matthaniah; for they were accounted faithful. It was their office to distribute to their brothers. ¹⁴ Remember me, my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances. ¹⁵ In those days, saw I in Judah—some treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves and lading asses, moreover also wine, grapes, and figs, and every kind of burden, which they were bringing into Jerusalem on the sabbath day,—so I protested against it, as a day for them to sell provisions. ¹⁶ Furthermore, Tyrians were living there who were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise, selling them to the people of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem. ¹⁷ And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day: ¹⁸ Did not our fathers do these things, and our God brought all this evil upon us, and upon this city? And you bring more wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath. ¹⁹ When the streets of Jerusalem were getting dark before the Sabbath, I gave orders for the gate to be shut and not to be open again until after the Sabbath. I put some of my servants by the gate so that nothing might be taken in on the Sabbath day. ²⁰ And the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods stayed the night outside Jerusalem once or twice. ²¹ But I warned them and said to them, "Why are you spending the night opposite the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands against you." From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. ²² Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to come as gate keepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, my God, and show mercy to me according to the greatness of your gracious love. ²³ Also in those days I saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. ²⁴ and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and did not know how to speak in the Jewish language. ²⁵ So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. ²⁶ "Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? Among a number of nations there was no king like him. He was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But even he was made to do evil by strange women. ²⁷ And should we hearken to you to do all this great evil, to act unfaithfully to our God by marrying foreign wives? ²⁸ One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the chief priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I sent him away from me. ²⁹ Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. ³⁰ I purified them from everything foreign, arranged duties for the priests and the Levites, each to his task, ³¹ And provided for the wood offering, at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

⁵ But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.

²² When he finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

³³ And when the LORD had finished speaking to Abraham, then Abraham returned to his place.

²¹ Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and he touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and fire went up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes. And the angel of the LORD went from his sight.

²⁰ And when the flame ascended above the altar, up towards heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. When Manoe and his wife saw this, they fell flat with their face to the ground.

³¹ Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him; but he disappeared from their sight.

¹⁸ Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had under his head. He set it up as a marker and poured oil on top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza.

⁴⁵ So Jacob took a stone,—and set it up as a pillar.

²⁰ And Jacob set up a pillar on her grave; it is the pillar of Rachel's grave until today.

¹² Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Thus far has the LORD helped us.

¹⁶ He said to the woman: "I will greatly increase your pains in childbirth; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."

¹⁹ Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

⁷ As for me, when I came from Paddan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way, when there was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there in the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)."

² And the man's name was Elimelech, and his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they came to the land of Moab, and remained there.

¹⁹ "Go in peace," he said. So Naaman left. After Naaman had gone only a short distance,

¹⁹ When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur.

⁶ We heard about it in Ephrata; we found it in the fields of Jaar.

² But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small among the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.

¹ After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,

¹⁶ When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi.

¹⁸ "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they were no more."

¹⁵ But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, and love, and holiness, with sobriety.

²⁴ She named him Joseph. She said: "May the LORD give me another son."

¹⁹ His daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was pregnant, near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her pains. ²⁰ As she was dying the women attending her said, Don't be afraid, for you have given birth to a son. But she didn't answer, neither did she pay any attention. ²¹ And she called the child Ichabod, saying, The glory has departed from Israel, because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

¹ When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister. She said to Jacob, "Give me children, or else I will die."

⁴ But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with them, for fear, as he said, that some evil might come to him.

³⁸ Jacob replied: "My son will not go with you. His brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If any harm comes to him on the trip you are taking, the grief would drive this gray-haired old man to his grave!"

²⁷ Your servant, my father, said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons: ²⁸ And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him since: ²⁹ And if you take this one also from my face, and harm happen to him, you will bring my gray hair to the grave in sorrow. ³⁰ Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us; since his life is bound up in the boy's life; ³¹ it will be when he sees that the youth is not, he will die. And your servants will bring down the gray hair of your servant our father to the grave in sorrow.

⁷ They're to take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat the lamb.

⁹ Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez. She said: I gave birth to him in pain.

¹⁰ You do not abandon me to the grave or allow your holy one to decay.

¹⁷ May you support the man at your right hand; the son of man whom you have raised for yourself.

¹² They tell their mothers, "Where is grain and wine?" When they faint as the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives fade away in their mothers' bosom.

²⁰ But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your soul will be demanded of you. Then who will have all you have prepared?'

⁴⁶ Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.

⁵⁹ While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

¹⁵ It included Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem: twelve cities with their villages.

¹¹ And all of the people who were at the gate and the elders said, "We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman coming into your house as Rachel and as Leah, who together built the house of Israel. May you have strength in Ephrathah and bestow a name in Bethlehem.

² Hear, you mountains, the LORD's controversy, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.

⁶ 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.'"

¹⁶ When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. ⁸ And there were shepherds residing in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks by night.

³¹ When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. ³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, because she said: »Certainly, the LORD has seen my misery. Now my husband will love me!« ³³ And she conceived again, and bare a son, and said. She said: "This time I will praise the LORD." So she named him Judah (Praise). Then she stopped having children.

⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Then Rachel said, God has been my judge, and has given ear to my voice, and has given me a son; so he was named Dan. ⁷ And Rachel's slave woman Bilhah conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said: "I have struggled hard with my sister, and I have won!" So she named the boy Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Then Leah said, "Good fortune!" And she called his name Gad. ¹² And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Then Leah said, "How happy am I! For women have called me happy." So she called his name Asher. ¹⁴ During the wheat harvest Reuben went out into the fields. He found some mandrake plants. He brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah: "Please, give me some of your son's mandrake plants." ¹⁵ She said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes, also?" Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes." ¹⁶ When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him. And she said, "Come in to me, for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." And he slept with her that night. ¹⁷ God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Then Leah said, God has made payment to me for giving my servant-girl to my husband: so she gave her son the name Issachar. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ Leah said: "God has presented me with a wonderful gift. This time my husband will honor me, because I have given him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. ²¹ And afterwards she gave birth to a daughter and called her name Dinah. ²² Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, "God has taken away my disgrace." ²⁴ She named him Joseph. She said: "May the LORD give me another son."

¹⁸ As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.

These were the gifts from Nethanel, son of Zuar. ²⁴ On the third day, Eliab son of Helon, leader of the Zebulunites brought an offering. ²⁵ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking wine weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ²⁶ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ²⁷ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ²⁸ one male goat for a sin offering; ²⁹ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Eliab, son of Helon. ³⁰ The fourth day, Elizur, the son of Shedeur, chief lord among the children of Reuben, brought his offering. ³¹ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ³² one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ³³ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ³⁴ one male goat for a sin offering; ³⁵ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Elizur, son of Shedeur. ³⁶ On the fifth day Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, leader of the children of Simeon, did offer: ³⁷ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ³⁸ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ³⁹ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁴⁰ one male goat for a sin offering; ⁴¹ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai. ⁴² On the sixth day Eliasaph the son of Deuel, leader of the children of Gad, offered: ⁴³ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁴⁴ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁴⁵ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁴⁶ one male goat for a sin offering; ⁴⁷ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Eliasaph, son of Deuel. ⁴⁸ On the seventh day Elishama the son of ‘Ammihud, the prince of the children of Ephraim, did offer: ⁴⁹ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁵⁰ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁵¹ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁵² one male goat for a sin offering; ⁵³ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Elishama, son of Ammihud. ⁵⁴ On the eighth day Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, ruler of the sons of Manasseh, offered: ⁵⁵ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁵⁶ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁵⁷ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁵⁸ one male goat for a sin offering; ⁵⁹ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur. ⁶⁰ On the ninth day Abidan the son of Gidoni, the prince of the children of Benjamin, did offer: ⁶¹ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁶² one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁶³ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁶⁴ one male goat for a sin offering; ⁶⁵ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Abidan, son of Gideoni. ⁶⁶ On the tenth day Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai, leader of the descendants of Dan: ⁶⁷ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁶⁸ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁶⁹ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁷⁰ one male goat for a sin offering; ⁷¹ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Pagiel, son of Ochran. ⁷⁸ On the twelfth day Ahira the son of Enan, ruler of the sons of Naphtali, offered: ⁷⁹ his offering was one silver plate—its weight one hundred and thirty shekels—and one silver bowl for drinking weighing seventy shekels according to the sanctuary shekel, both of them filled with finely milled flour mixed with oil as a grain offering; ⁸⁰ one golden dish weighing ten shekels filled with incense; ⁸¹ one young bull, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; ⁸² one male goat for a sin offering; ⁸³ and two bulls, five rams, five male goats, and five one-year-old male lambs as a fellowship offering. These were the gifts from Ahira, son of Enan. ⁸⁴ These were the gifts from the leaders of Israel for the dedication of the altar when it was anointed: twelve silver plates, twelve silver bowls, and twelve gold dishes. ⁸⁵ Each silver dish weighed a hundred and thirty shekels, each basin seventy. All the silver vessels weighed two thousand and four hundred shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel; ⁸⁶ twelve golden pans, full of incense, ten shekels each, according to the sanctuary shekel; all the gold of the pans was a hundred and twenty shekels. ⁸⁷ The total number of animals for the burnt offerings was twelve young bulls, twelve rams, twelve one-year-old male lambs, along with their grain offerings. Twelve male goats were used as offerings for sin. ⁸⁸ The total number of animals for fellowship offerings was twenty-four bulls, sixty rams, sixty male goats, and sixty one-year-old male lambs. These were the gifts for the dedication of the altar after it was anointed. ⁸⁹ When Moses went into the Tent of Meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard his voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the Testimony, from between the two cherubim: and he spoke to him.

These are the same Dathan and Abiram who were appointed of the community, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against the LORD, ¹⁰ And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that band died, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign. ¹¹ The children of Korah, however, did not die. ¹² The sons of Simeon by their families:through Nemuel the Nemuelite family; through Jamin the Jaminite family; through Jachin the Jachinite family; ¹³ through Zerah the Zerahite family; through Shaul the Shaulite family. ¹⁴ These were the clans of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand two hundred. ¹⁵ The sons of Gad by their families:through Zephon the Zephonite family; through Haggi the Haggite family; through Shuni the Shunite family; ¹⁶ through Ozni the Oznite family; through Eri the Erite family; ¹⁷ through Arod the Arodite family; through Areli the Arelite family. ¹⁸ These are the families of Gad, of which the whole number was forty thousand five hundred. ¹⁹ Er and Onan were sons of Judah, but they died in Canaan. ²⁰ The sons of Judah were, by their families:through Shelah the Shelanite family; through Perez the Perezite family; through Zerah the Zerahite family. ²¹ The sons of Perez were:through Hezron the Hezronite family; through Hamul the Hamulite family. ²² These are the families of Judah as they were numbered, seventy-six thousand, five hundred. ²³ The sons of Issachar by their families:through Tola the Tolaite family; through Puah the Puanite family; ²⁴ through Jashub the Jashubite family; through Shimron the Shimronite family. ²⁵ These are the kindreds of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred. ²⁶ The sons of Zebulun by their families:through Sered the Seredite family; through Elon the Elonite family; through Jahleel the Jahleelite family; ²⁷ These are the kindreds of Zabulon, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred. ²⁸ The sons of Joseph by their kindred, Manasses and Ephraim. ²⁹ The sons of Manasseh were:through Machir the Machirite family, and Machir begat Gilead; through Gilead the Gileadite family. ³⁰ These were the sons of Gilead:through Jezer the Jezerite family; through Helek the Helekite family; ³¹ through Asriel the Asrielite family; through Shechem the Shechemite family; ³² through Shemida the Shemidaite family; through Hepher the Hepherite family. ³³ Zelophehad, son of Hepher, had no sons-only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These are the kindreds of Manasseh, in number fifty two thousand and seven hundred. ³⁵ These are the sons of Ephraim according to their families: of Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite family; of Becher, the Becherite family; of Tahan, the Tahanite family. ³⁶ And these were the descendants of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. ³⁷ These are the families of Ephraim as they were numbered, thirty-two thousand, five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph by their families. ³⁸ The sons of Benjamin by their families:through Bela the Belaite family; through Ashbel the Ashbelite family; through Ahiram the Ahiramite family; ³⁹ through Shupham the Shuphamite family; through Hupham the Huphamite family. ⁴⁰ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman:through Ard the Ardite family; through Naaman the Naamite family. ⁴¹ These are the sons of Benjamin by their kindreds, whose number was forty-five thousand six hundred. ⁴² These were the sons of Dan by their families:through Shuham the Shuhamite family. These were the families of Dan by their families. ⁴³ All were Suhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred. ⁴⁴ The sons of Asher by their families:through Jimna the Jimnite family; through Ishvi the Ishvite family; through Beriah the Beriite family, ⁴⁵ through sons of Beriah, through Heber the Heberite family; through Malchiel the Malchielite family. ⁴⁶ Asher had a daughter named Serah. ⁴⁷ These are the kindreds of Asher, in number fifty three thousand and four hundred. ⁴⁸ The sons of Naphtali by their families:through Jahzeel the Jahzeelite family; through Guni the Gunite family; ⁴⁹ through Jezer the Jezerite family; through Shillem the Shillemite family. ⁵⁰ These were the families of Naphtali. The total number of men was forty-five thousand four hundred. ⁵¹

⁵⁷ These were the mustered ones of the Levites by their families:through Gershon the Gershonite family; through Kohath the Kohathite family; through Merari the Merarite family. ⁵⁸ These were the families of Levi: the Libnite family, the Hebronite family, the Mahlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korahite family. Kohath was the ancestor of Amram. ⁵⁹ The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born in Egypt. She gave birth to Amram's children: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam. ⁶⁰ Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁶¹ Yet Nadab and Abihu died when they offered alien fire before the LORD. ⁶² The total number of all the Levite males at least one month old was twenty-three thousand. They were not counted along with the other Israelites, because they were given no land of their own.

¹⁴ »The tribes of Reuben and Gad and the eastern half of Manasseh have received their property, divided according to their families, ¹⁵ The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side of the Jordan of Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising. ¹⁶ the LORD said to Moses: ¹⁷ "These are the names of the men who divide up the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. ¹⁸ "You must also take one leader from each tribe to divide the land. ¹⁹ These are their names: Caleb son of Jephunneh, from the tribe of Judah, ²⁰ "Shemuel son of Ammihud, from the tribe of Simeon; ²¹ "Elidad son of Kislon, from the tribe of Benjamin; ²² "Bukki son of Jogli, the leader of the tribe of Dan; ²³ "Hanniel son of Ephod, the leader of the tribe of Manasseh; ²⁴ "Kemuel son of Shiphtan, the leader of the tribe of Ephraim; Manasseh and Ephraim are Joseph's descendants. ²⁵ "Elizaphan son of Parnach, the leader of the tribe of Zebulun; ²⁶ "Paltiel son of Azzan, the leader of the tribe of Issachar; ²⁷ "Ahihud son of Shelomi, the leader of the tribe of Asher; ²⁸ "Pedahel son of Ammihud, the leader of the tribe of Naphtali."

¹ This is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the Israelites before his death. ² Then he said, "the LORD came from Sinai, and he dawned upon them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran, and he came with myriads of holy ones, at his right hand a fiery law for them. ³ Yes, he loves the people. All his holy ones are in your hand. They sat down at your feet; each receives your words. ⁴ A law hath Moses commanded us, A possession of the assembly of Jacob. ⁵ And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people assembled, the tribes of Israel. ⁶ Let Reuben live, and not die, nor let his men be few. ⁷ And he said this of Judah, "Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people; his own hands strive for him, and may you be a help against his foes." ⁸ About Levi he said:May your Thummim and your Urim be for your benign man whom you probed at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah, ⁹ He said of his father, and of his mother, 'I have not seen him.' He didn't acknowledge his brothers, nor did he know his own children; for they have observed your word, and keep your covenant. ¹⁰ "They will teach your ordinances to Jacob, and your Law to Israel. They will burn incense before you, and whole burnt offerings on your altar. ¹¹ Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands. Smite through the loins of those who rise up against him, and of those who hate him, that they not rise again. ¹² About Benjamin he said, “The beloved of the LORD will dwell in safety by him. He covers him all day long. He dwells between his shoulders.” ¹³ »Blessed of the LORD is his land. Bless it with the dew from heaven above and with the deep waters lying below. ¹⁴ Of the fruits brought forth by the sun and by the moon. ¹⁵ with the finest produce of the ancient mountains, and the abundance of the everlasting hills, ¹⁶ and with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of the one who dwelt in the bush. Let them come to the head of Joseph, and to the crown of the prince among his brothers. ¹⁷ Majesty belongs to the firstborn of his herd. His horns are the horns of the wild ox. With them he will push all the peoples to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim. They are the thousands of Manasseh.” ¹⁸ About Zebulun he said, “Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out; and Issachar, in your tents. ¹⁹ They will call the tribes unto the mountain; there will they offer sacrifices of righteousness; for they will suck the abundance of the seas, and the treasures hid in the sand. ²⁰ About Gad he said: "Blessed be the One who enlarges Gad! Like a roaring lion, he crouches, tearing arm and scalp. ²¹ He chose the best part for himself, when the leader's portion was assigned. He came at the head of the people, carrying out the LORD'S justice and his ordinances concerning Israel." ²² About Dan he said: "Dan is a lion's cub, leaping forth from Bashan." ²³ About Naphtali he said, “Naphtali, satisfied with favor, full of the LORD’s blessing, Possess the west and the south.” ²⁴ About Asher he said:Most blessed of sons be Asher, and let him come to be approved by his brothers, and be dipping his foot in oil. ²⁵ May your shoe latches be iron and bronze, and your days as your strength. ²⁶ There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heaven to your help, and in His majesty on the clouds. ²⁷ The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before you; and shall say, Destroy them. ²⁸ Israel shall dwell in safety alone, the fountain of Jacob in a land of grain and new wine. Yes, His heavens drop down dew. ²⁹ How blessed are you, Israel! Who can be like you, a people delivered by the LORD, your shield of help and your finely crafted sword. May your enemies cower before you. You will tread down their high places.

¹ Now Joshua was old and well advanced in years. the LORD said to him, You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed. ² This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites; ³ from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites, Ashdodites, Ashkelonites, Gittites, Ekronites, and the Avvim. ⁴ on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and from Arah that belongs to the Sidonians to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites; ⁵ and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad under Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath; ⁶ all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, even all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the children of Israel. Just allocate it to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. ⁷ "Divide this land for an inheritance among the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh." ⁸ with it the Reubenite, and the Gadite, have received their inheritance, which Moses has given to them beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses servant of the LORD has given to them;" ⁹ From Aroer, on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the town in the middle of the valley, and all the table-land from Medeba to Dibon; ¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the Ammonites; ¹¹ and Gilead, and the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and all Bashan, as far as Salecah; ¹² The kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants. Moses defeated them and took over their land. ¹³ But the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites; Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. ¹⁴ But unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the sacrifices on fire of the LORD God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said unto them. ¹⁵ And Moses gave their heritage to the tribe of Reuben by their families. ¹⁶ Their limit was from Aroer, on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the town in the middle of the valley, and all the table-land by Medeba; ¹⁷ Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, ¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ¹⁹ Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley, ²⁰ Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth; ²¹ all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.

²¹ Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father's concubines, that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong." ²² And they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

³ And when David came to his house at Jerusalem, the king took the ten women, his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and sent them to a house of confinement, and fed them, but did not go in to them. So they were kept confined to the day of their death, living as widows.

¹ These were the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, ² Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

¹ The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father's marriage bed, his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright,

²³ These are the numbers of the chiefs of the armed men, ready for war, who came to David at Hebron, to give the kingdom of Saul into his hands, as the Lord had said. ²⁴ The sons of Judah bearing shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred armed troops. ²⁵ the elite warriors of Simeon numbered 7,100, ²⁶ and the Levites numbered 4,600. ²⁷ Jehoiada, a senior officer in the house of Aaron, brought with him 3,700. ²⁸ and Zadok, a valiant young man, and his father`s house two and twenty chief men. ²⁹ The tribe of Benjamin, relatives of Saul numbered 3,000, of whom most had remained allied to what remained of Saul's dynasty. ³⁰ From the tribe of Ephraim, there were twenty thousand eight hundred warriors, each famous in his own clan. ³¹ And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, eighteen thousand, listed by name, came to make David king. ³² And of the sons of Issachar, having understanding for the times, to know what Israel should do; their heads [are] two hundred, and all their brethren [are] at their command. ³³ The tribe of Zebulun supplied 50,000 experienced troops, trained in the use of every kind of war weapon, in order to help David with undivided loyalty. ³⁴ And of Naphtali, a thousand captains with thirty-seven thousand spearmen. ³⁵ The tribe of Dan supplied 28,600 battle-ready troops. ³⁶ And of Asher ones going forth to help in war—forty thousand. ³⁷ And from the country beyond the Jordan, from Reuben, and the Gadites, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh, a hundred and twenty thousand, with all weapons of war. ³⁸ All these being men of war, who could order the battle array, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel. All the rest of Israel were also of one heart to make David king. ³⁹ They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had supplied provisions for them. ⁴⁰ Their neighbors came from as far away as the territories of Issachar, Zebulun, and Naphtali, bringing provisions loaded on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen. They brought abundant provisions of meal, fig bars, raisins, wine, oil, oxen, and sheep, because there was joy in Israel.

¹⁶ And over the tribes of Israel: for the Reubenites, the leader, Eliezer son of Zichri: for the Simeonites Shephatiah son of Maacah ¹⁷ Of Levi, Hashabiah, son of Kemuel. Of Aaron, Zadok. ¹⁸ Over Juda, Eliu the brother of David over Issachar, Amri the son of Michael: ¹⁹ of Zebulun, Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; of Naphtali, Jerimoth son of Azriel; ²⁰ for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea, son of Azaziah for half of the tribe of Manasseh, Joel, son of Pedaiah ²¹ For the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo the son of Zechariah. For Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner. ²² Of Dan, Azarel, son of Jeroham. These, were the rulers of the tribes of Israel.

¹ "These are the names of the tribes. Beginning at the northern border, Dan will have one part of the land. It will extend from the road to Hethlon to Hamath Pass and Hazar Enon, on the northern border of Damascus near Hamath, from the eastern border to the western border. ² And from the borders of Dan eastward as far as the west sea-coast, for Asser, one. ³ Naphtali will have one part of the land and border Asher on the south. It will extend from the eastern border to the western border. ⁴ By the border of Manasseh, from the east side to the west side, Ephraim, one portion. ⁵ and by the border of Manasseh, from the east side unto the west side, Ephraim one, ⁶ And upon the bound of Ephraim to the side east, even to the side of the Rea, Reuben, one. ⁷ and bordering on Reuben from the eastern boundary to the sea, a portion for Juda; ⁸ And on the limit of Judah, from the east side to the west side, will be the offering which you are to make, twenty-five thousand wide, and as long as one of the parts, from the east side to the west side: and the holy place will be in the middle of it. ⁹ The Terumah that you shall give to the LORD shall be 25,000 units." ¹⁰ Out of these there shall be for the priests the holy dedication, on the north side twenty five thousand and on the west side ten thousand and on the south side twenty five thousand. And the mountain of the Holies shall be in the midst of it. ¹¹ To the priests being consecrated: of the sons of Zadok, who watched my watches, who went not astray in the going astray of the sons of Israel, as the Levites went astray. ¹² It shall be a Terumah for them from the allotment of the land, a most holy place, adjoining the border of the Levites." ¹³ "Alongside the border of the priests, the Levites shall be allotted 25,000 units in length and 10,000 units in width. The entire length is to be 25,000 units and its width 10,000 units. ¹⁴ Furthermore, they are not to sell or exchange any part of it, nor transfer this first fruits of the land, because it is holy to the LORD. ¹⁵ "The rest, 5,000 units wide and 25,000 units along its front, will serve as a common portion for use by the city for housing and open spaces, since the city shall be in its midst. ¹⁶ These shall be its dimensions: the north side, 4,500 units; the south side, 4,500 units; the east side, 4,500 units; and the west side 4,500 units. ¹⁷ The city shall have urban areas set aside: on the north 250 units; on the south, 250 units, on the east, 250 units; and on the west, 250 units. ¹⁸ And the rest, in measure as long as the holy offering, will be ten thousand to the east and ten thousand to the west: and its produce will be for food for the workers of the town. ¹⁹ The city workers who cultivate it shall come from all the tribes of Israel. ²⁰ All of the contribution, twenty-five thousand by twenty five thousand cubits square, you shall set apart as the holy district along with the property of the city. ²¹ "Whatever is left on the east side and west side of the holy area and the city property will belong to the prince. This land will extend eastward from the holy area to the eastern border, and it will extend westward to the western border. Both of these areas are as long as one of the sections of the tribes. These areas belong to the prince, and the holy area with the Holy Place of the Temple will be between them. ²² And also the property of the Levites and the property of the city will be in the midst of the property which is for the prince; between the territory of Judah and between the territory of Benjamin the land will be for the prince. ²³ "This is what the rest of the tribes will receive: Benjamin will have one part of the land. It will extend from the eastern border to the western border. ²⁴ And on the boundary of Benjamin from the east side unto the west side, Simeon one. ²⁵ and bordering on Symeon, from the eastern boundary to the sea, a portion for Issachar: ²⁶ And from the borders of Issachar, from the eastern parts to the western, Zabulon, one. ²⁷ And from the borders of Zabulon, from the east to the western parts, Gad, one. ²⁸ "The southern border of Gad will run south from Tamar to the oasis at Meribah in Kadesh, and it will run along the Brook of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. ²⁹ This is the land that you shall allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions," declares the Sovereign LORD. ³⁰ "These are the exits to the city: On the north side, 4,500 units by measurement, ³¹ "The gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be Reuben Gate, Judah Gate, and Levi Gate. ³² And at the east side four thousand and five hundred: and three gates; one gate of Joseph, one gate of Benjamin, one gate of Dan. ³³ And the south side five hundred, and four thousand measures, and three gates: the gate of Simeon one, the gate of Issachar one, the gate of Zebulun one. ³⁴ At the west side four thousand and five hundred, with their three gates; one gate of Gad, one gate of Asher, one gate of Naphtali. ³⁵ A perimeter shall measure 18,000 units, and the name of the city from that time on shall be 'THE LORD IS THERE.'"

⁸ He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

¹ It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among pagans: a man has his father's wife.

⁴ And I heard the number of those who were sealed, one hundred forty-four thousand from all the tribes of Israel: ⁵ Of the tribe of Judah, 12,000 were sealed; Of the tribe of Reuben, 12,000; Of the tribe of Gad, 12,000; ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher, 12,000; Of the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000; Of the tribe of Manasseh, 12,000; ⁷ 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000; Of the tribe of Joseph, 12,000; Of the tribe of Benjamin, 12,000.

¹⁴ And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

¹⁸ Then Leah said, God has made payment to me for giving my servant-girl to my husband: so she gave her son the name Issachar. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ Leah said: "God has presented me with a wonderful gift. This time my husband will honor me, because I have given him six sons." So she named him Zebulun.

² He put the servants and their children in front, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob ⁹ The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all.

¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And when her labor was the most difficult the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid for you have another son." ¹⁸ As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.

¹⁹ The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest from the city of On. ²¹ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all.

⁴ So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her. ⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Then Rachel said, God has been my judge, and has given ear to my voice, and has given me a son; so he was named Dan. ⁷ And Rachel's slave woman Bilhah conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said: "I have struggled hard with my sister, and I have won!" So she named the boy Naphtali.

² These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph, a son of seventeen years, came tending the flock with his brothers. And he was a youth with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought to his father an evil report of them.

²³ The son of Dan: Hushim. ²⁴ The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These were the children of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, seven persons.

²⁰ Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram, and sister of Laban the Aramean.

² Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother's father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Then Leah said, "Good fortune!" And she called his name Gad. ¹² And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Then Leah said, "How happy am I! For women have called me happy." So she called his name Asher.

¹⁸ And he drove all the livestock, and he took all his goods which he had gotten, livestock of his property which he had gotten in Padan-aram, to come to his father Isaac, to the land of Canaan.

¹⁶ The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. ¹⁸ These are the children of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, and Jacob had these sixteen children by her.

¹⁸ Abram moved his tents and went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron. He built an altar to the LORD there.

¹³ Then one who escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew. And he was living at the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner. They were allies with Abram.

² Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

¹⁹ And after this Abraham buried his wife Sarah at the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre; it is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

⁵ Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

¹² So now give me this hill country that the LORD spoke of on that day, for you heard on that day that the Anakites were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps the LORD is with me, and I will drive them out just as the LORD promised." ¹³ Joshua blessed Caleb the son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron for an inheritance. ¹⁴ Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel wholeheartedly. ¹⁵ Now the name of Hebron before was Kiriath Arba, after the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land had rest from war.

¹³ ⌊According to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua⌋, he gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a plot of ground among the descendants of Judah, Kiriath Arba, which is Hebron (Arba was Anak's father).

¹¹ They gave them Kiriath Arba, named after the father of Anak (that is, Hebron), in the hill country of Judah, with its suburbs around it.

¹ It happened after this that David inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall I go up into one of the cities of Judah?" And the LORD said to him, "Go up." David asked, "Where shall I go up?" And he said, "To Hebron."

³ Also, David brought up his men who were with him, each with his household, and they settled in the towns of Hebron.

¹¹ The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

¹ All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said to him: "We are your own flesh and blood.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel.

⁵ In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

⁷ Abraham lived one hundred and seventy-five years.

²⁸ And he lived in it seventeen years: and all the days of his life came to a hundred and forty-seven years.

²⁶ So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old. They embalmed him and he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

¹⁵ but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried at a good old age.

¹⁹ And after this Abraham buried his wife Sarah at the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre; it is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ And the field and the cave which was in it passed to Abraham as a burial site from the Hittites.

⁷ Abraham lived one hundred and seventy-five years. ⁸ Then Abraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man and full of days, and was added to his people. ⁹ His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre.

¹⁷ And these, are the years of the life of Ishmael, a hundred and thirty-seven years,—and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered unto his people.

¹ When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, “My son?” He said to him, “Here I am.” ² He said, See now, I am old. I don't know the day of my death.

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob."

³¹ »Abraham and his wife Sarah are buried there. Isaac and his wife Rebekah are buried there. I also buried Leah there.

³³ When Jacob finished instructing his sons he drew his feet up to the bed. Then he took his last breath and was gathered to his people.

²⁶ You shall come to the grave in full vigor, like a stack of grain comes up in its season.

⁵ They are afraid of heights, and terrors are on the road. The almond tree blossoms, and the grasshopper draws itself along, and desire fails because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about in the streets. ⁶ before the silver cord is severed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the spring, or the wheel broken at the cistern, ⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
