He said: 2 "Take a census of the entire Israelite community, numbering them by their clans and by ancestral houses. List the names of every male one-by-one, 3 From twenty years old and upwards, of all the men of Israel fit for war, and you shall number them by their troops, thou and Aaron. 4 A man from each tribe will be with you, each man the head of his family. 5 And these are the names of the men who will assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; 7 from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; 8 from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; 9 from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. 10 for the sons of Joseph:for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;" 11 From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; 12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; 13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; 14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; 15 For Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan. 16 These are the ones summoned from the community, the leaders of their ancestors' tribes; they are the heads of Israel's clans. 17 Moses and Aaron took the men who had been named 18 and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month. 1 Samuel 1:1-28

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 which had two wives, the one called Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. 3 Now this man used to go up from his town year by year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD Almighty in Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the LORD. 4 ⌊On⌋ the day Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6 Her rival provoked her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7 This went on year after year when she went up to the house of the LORD; she provoked her, therefore she wept and didn't eat. 8 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why are you crying and why don't you eat? Why are you upset? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" 9 So Hannah rose up after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the LORD's temple. 10 She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. 11 She vowed a vow, and said, “the LORD of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.” 12 As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli saw her mouth. 13 And she was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk? Get rid of your wine!” 15 "No, sir!" Hannah replied. "I'm a deeply troubled woman. I've drunk neither wine nor beer. I've been pouring out my soul before the LORD. 16 Do not take your servant to be a good-for-nothing woman: for my words have come from my stored-up sorrow and pain. 17 Eli answered: "Go in peace. May the God of Israel give you what you have asked of him." 18 She said, "Let your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. 19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. 20 So it was that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel. She explained: "I asked the LORD for him." 21 So the man Elkanah went up with all his household to make the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Once the boy is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear before the LORD; and he will remain there forever." 23 "Do what you want," Elkanah said to her. "Stay until you have weaned him, only may the LORD bring about what you have said." So Hannah stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. 24 Then, when she had weaned him, she brought him up with her to Shiloh, along with a three-year-old bull, a half-bushel of flour, and a skin of wine. She brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh, and the boy was young. 25 They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli. 26 And she said, Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. 27 I prayed for this boy, and the LORD granted me the request I asked of him. 28 And I have returned him to the LORD. As long as he lives, he shall be given to the LORD. And he worshiped the LORD there.

Joshua 6:1-21

1 ¶ Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the sons of Israel; no one went out, and no one came in. 2 And the LORD said to Joshua, See, I have given Jericho into your hand, and its king, and the mighty men of war. 3 March around the city, all the soldiers circling the city once. Do this for six days, 4 And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark. And the seventh day you shall go around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets. 5 "When you hear a long blast with the ram’s horn, all the people will shout with a great shout. The wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people will go up, every man straight in to the city." 6 And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests and said to them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests carry seven ram's horns in front of the ark of the LORD. 7 And he said to the people, Pass on, go around the city, and he who is shall go on before the ark of the LORD. 8 It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the LORD advanced and blew the trumpets, and the ark of the LORD's covenant followed them. 9 The armed men marched ahead of the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the Ark. All the time the priests kept blowing the trumpets. 10 Joshua issued orders to the army: "You are not to shout or even let your voice be heard. Don't utter a word until I tell you to shout. Then shout!" 11 And the ark of the LORD went around the city, circling once, and they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp. 12 Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests picked up the ark of the LORD. 13 The seven priests who carried the seven trumpets made from rams' horns preceded the ark of the LORD, blowing their trumpets constantly. The armed men preceded them, and the rear guard followed the ark of the LORD, while the trumpets continued to blow. 14 And the second day they went around the city once, and returned to the camp. They did this for six days. 15 They rose early at dawn on the seventh day and marched around the city seven times, just as they had before, except that on that day only they marched around the city seven times. 16 At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for the LORD has given you the city! 17 The city and all that is in it will be devoted to the LORD; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house will live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. 18 Now as for you, everything that has been turned over for destruction. Don't covet or take any of these things. Otherwise, you'll make the camp of Israel itself an object worthy of destruction, and bring trouble on it. 19 But all of the silver and gold, and the items of bronze and iron, are holy to the LORD, and they must go to the LORD's treasury." 20 So the army shouted and the trumpets were blown again. As soon as the army heard the sound of the trumpets, they shouted loudly and the wall collapsed. The army charged straight ahead into the city and captured it. 21 They turned over everyone in the city for destruction and executed them, including both men and women, young and old, and oxen, sheep, and donkeys.

Nehemiah 13:1-31

1 On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people and it was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God 2 because they did not meet the Israelites with bread and water; but hired Balaam against them to curse them; but our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 And when they heard the law, they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude. 4 Before this, Eliashib the priest had been placed over the rooms of the house of our God. He was a friend of Tobiah. 5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had formerly put the grain offering, the frankincense, the temple objects, tithes of grain, wine, and oil commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the offerings of the priests. 6 But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king, 7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil which Eliashib did for Tobiah in preparing him a room in the courts of the house of God. 8 It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah's household stuff out of the room. 9 Then I gave orders, and they made the rooms clean: and I put back in them the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the perfume. 10 I also learned that the allotments for the Levites had not been distributed. As a result, the Levites and singers who were responsible for the service had each left to go back to their fields. 11 So I confronted the officials and asked, "Why is the temple of God neglected?" Then I gathered them together and put them back in their places. 12 So all of Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and olive oil into the storehouses. 13 to the charge of Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites. And next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Matthaniah; for they were accounted faithful. It was their office to distribute to their brothers. 14 Remember me, my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its observances. 15 In those days, saw I in Judah—some treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves and lading asses, moreover also wine, grapes, and figs, and every kind of burden, which they were bringing into Jerusalem on the sabbath day,—so I protested against it, as a day for them to sell provisions. 16 Furthermore, Tyrians were living there who were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise, selling them to the people of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem. 17 And I rebuked the chief men of Juda, and said to them: What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day: 18 Did not our fathers do these things, and our God brought all this evil upon us, and upon this city? And you bring more wrath upon Israel by violating the sabbath. 19 When the streets of Jerusalem were getting dark before the Sabbath, I gave orders for the gate to be shut and not to be open again until after the Sabbath. I put some of my servants by the gate so that nothing might be taken in on the Sabbath day. 20 And the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods stayed the night outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, "Why are you spending the night opposite the wall? If you do it again, I will lay hands against you." From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to come as gate keepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, my God, and show mercy to me according to the greatness of your gracious love. 23 Also in those days I saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and did not know how to speak in the Jewish language. 25 So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 "Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? Among a number of nations there was no king like him. He was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But even he was made to do evil by strange women. 27 And should we hearken to you to do all this great evil, to act unfaithfully to our God by marrying foreign wives? 28 One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the chief priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I sent him away from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites. 30 I purified them from everything foreign, arranged duties for the priests and the Levites, each to his task, 31 And provided for the wood offering, at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him? 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. To him will the obedience of the peoples be. 11 "He will tie his donkey to a grapevine, his colt to the best vine. His arms remained limber because of the help of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, 25 even by the God of your father, who will help you, by the Almighty, who will bless you, with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. 26 »The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the oldest mountains and the riches of the ancient hills. Deuteronomy 33:1-29

1 This is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, blessed the Israelites before his death. 2 Then he said, "the LORD came from Sinai, and he dawned upon them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran, and he came with myriads of holy ones, at his right hand a fiery law for them. 3 Yes, he loves the people. All his holy ones are in your hand. They sat down at your feet; each receives your words. 4 A law hath Moses commanded us, A possession of the assembly of Jacob. 5 And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people assembled, the tribes of Israel. 6 Let Reuben live, and not die, nor let his men be few. 7 And he said this of Judah, "Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people; his own hands strive for him, and may you be a help against his foes." 8 About Levi he said:May your Thummim and your Urim be for your benign man whom you probed at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah, 9 He said of his father, and of his mother, 'I have not seen him.' He didn't acknowledge his brothers, nor did he know his own children; for they have observed your word, and keep your covenant. 10 "They will teach your ordinances to Jacob, and your Law to Israel. They will burn incense before you, and whole burnt offerings on your altar. 11 Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands. Smite through the loins of those who rise up against him, and of those who hate him, that they not rise again. 12 About Benjamin he said, “The beloved of the LORD will dwell in safety by him. He covers him all day long. He dwells between his shoulders.” 13 »Blessed of the LORD is his land. Bless it with the dew from heaven above and with the deep waters lying below. 14 Of the fruits brought forth by the sun and by the moon. 15 with the finest produce of the ancient mountains, and the abundance of the everlasting hills, 16 and with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of the one who dwelt in the bush. Let them come to the head of Joseph, and to the crown of the prince among his brothers. 17 Majesty belongs to the firstborn of his herd. His horns are the horns of the wild ox. With them he will push all the peoples to the ends of the earth. They are the ten thousands of Ephraim. They are the thousands of Manasseh.” 18 About Zebulun he said, “Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out; and Issachar, in your tents. 19 They will call the tribes unto the mountain; there will they offer sacrifices of righteousness; for they will suck the abundance of the seas, and the treasures hid in the sand. 20 About Gad he said: "Blessed be the One who enlarges Gad! Like a roaring lion, he crouches, tearing arm and scalp. 21 He chose the best part for himself, when the leader's portion was assigned. He came at the head of the people, carrying out the LORD'S justice and his ordinances concerning Israel." 22 About Dan he said: "Dan is a lion's cub, leaping forth from Bashan." 23 About Naphtali he said, “Naphtali, satisfied with favor, full of the LORD’s blessing, Possess the west and the south.” 24 About Asher he said:Most blessed of sons be Asher, and let him come to be approved by his brothers, and be dipping his foot in oil. 25 May your shoe latches be iron and bronze, and your days as your strength. 26 There is none like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heaven to your help, and in His majesty on the clouds. 27 The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before you; and shall say, Destroy them. 28 Israel shall dwell in safety alone, the fountain of Jacob in a land of grain and new wine. Yes, His heavens drop down dew. 29 How blessed are you, Israel! Who can be like you, a people delivered by the LORD, your shield of help and your finely crafted sword. May your enemies cower before you. You will tread down their high places.

Moses defeated them and took over their land. 13 But the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites; Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. 14 But unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the sacrifices on fire of the LORD God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said unto them. 15 And Moses gave their heritage to the tribe of Reuben by their families. 16 Their limit was from Aroer, on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the town in the middle of the valley, and all the table-land by Medeba; 17 Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, 18 Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, 19 Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley, 20 Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth; 21 all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land.
