¹ al the people gathered themselues together as one man vpon the strete before the Watergate, and sayde vnto Esdras the scrybe, that he shulde fetche the boke of the lawe of Moses, whiche the Lorde commaunded to Israell.

¹ Then all the chyldren of Israel went out: and there gathered al congregacyon together as it had bene but one man, euen from Dan to Berseba, and out of the land of Galaad, vnto the land to Marphah,

⁸ Then all the people arose, as it had bene one man sayinge: there shal not a man of vs go to his tente, neither turne into his house.

¹⁵ And Helkiah answered and sayd to Saphan the scrybe: I haue founde the boke of the law in the house of the Lorde, and gaue the boke to Saphan.

¹ And when the seuenth monethe came, & the chyldren of Israell were nowe in their cytyes, the people came together euen as one man, vnto Ierusalem. ² And there stode vp Iesua the sonne of Iosedec and his brethren the priestes, & Zorobabel the sonne of Salathiel & hys brethren, and buylded the aulter of the God of Israell, to offre burntofferynges theron, as it is wrytten in the law of Moses the man of God, ³ & the aulter set they vpon hys sockettes (for there was a fearfulnes amonge them because of the nacions and landes) and offered burntofferynges theron vnto the Lorde in the mornyng and at euen. ⁴ And helde the feaste of Tabernacles, as it is wrytten, and offered burntsacryfyces dayly in order, according to the custome, day by daye. ⁵ Afterwarde the daylie burntofferinges also, and of the newe mones and of all the feaste dayes of the Lorde that were halowed, and al maner of frewyl offerynges, whych they did of their owne frewyll vnto the Lorde. ⁶ Vpon the fyrst day of the seuenth moneth beganne they to offre burntsacryfyces vnto the Lorde. But the foundacyon of the temple of the Lorde was not yet layed. ⁷ Neuertheles they gaue money vnto the masons and carpenters, and meate and dryncke and oyle vnto them of Zidon and of Tire, to brynge them Cedre tymbre from Libanus by Sea vnto Ioppa, accordynge to the commaundement of Cyrus the kynge of Persia. ⁸ In the seconde yeare of their commynge vnto the house of God at Ierusalem in the seconde moneth, beganne Zorobabel the sonne of Salathiel, and Iesua the sonne of Iosedec, & the remnaunt of their brethren the pryestes and Leuites, and al they that were come oute of the captyuyte vnto Ierusalem, & appoynted the Leuites from twentye yeare old, and aboue, to se, that the worcke of the house of the Lorde went forwarde. ⁹ And Iesua stode wyth hys sonnes and brethren, and Cadmiel wyth hys sonnes, and the children of Iuda, to forther the worckemen of the house of God, namely the children of Henadad with their children and their brethren the Leuites. ¹⁰ And when the buylders layd the foundacion of the temple of the Lorde, the pryestes stode in their aray, with trompettes. And the Leuites the children of Asaph with cymbales, to prayse the Lorde after the maner of Dauid kynge of Israel. ¹¹ And they sange together, geuynge prayse and thankes vnto the Lorde, because he is gracyous, and because hys mercy endureth for euer vpon Israel. And all the people shouted loude in praysing the Lorde, because the foundacyon of the house of the Lorde was layd. ¹² Many also of the old pryestes and Leuites and auncyent fathers, whyche had sene the fyrst house: when the foundacion of thys house was layed before their eyes, wepte wyth a loud voice. And many shouted with ioye, ¹³ so that the noyse gaue a great sounde, in so much that the people could not knowe the ioyfull sounde for the noyse of the weping amonge the people: for the people shouted with a loud crye, so that the noise was heard farre of.

⁶ This Esdras was a quicke scribe in the lawe of Moses, whiche the Lord God of Israel dyd geue. And the kinge gaue him al that he requireth accordynge to the hande of the Lord his God vpon him.

¹¹ And this is the copy of the letter, that kinge Arthaxerses gaue vnto Esdras the pryest, the scribe, whiche was a teacher in the wordes of the Lorde & of hys statues ouer Israel.

²⁶ (as for the Nethinims they dwelte in Ophel, vnto the Watergate, towarde the easte where the tower lyeth oute).

⁴ And Esdras the scrybe stode vpon an hye pulpyte of woode, whiche they had made for the preachyng, and besyde hym stode Mathathiah, Sema, Ananiah, Vriah, Helkiah, and Maaseiah, on hys ryghte hande: and on hys lefte hande stode Phadaiah, Misael, Melchiah, Hasum, Hasebadanah, Zachary and Mosolam. ⁵ And Esdras opened the boke before all the people, for he stode aboue all the people. And when he opened it, all the people stode vp. ⁶ And Esdras praysed the Lorde the greate God. And all the people answered Amen, Amen, with theyr handes vp, & bowed them selues, & worshipped the Lorde with theyr faces to the grounde. ⁷ And Iesua, Baani, Serabiah, Iamin, Acuba, Sebathai, Hodaiah, Maasiah, Celita, Azariah, Iozabed, Hanan, Phalaiah, and the Leuites, caused the people to geue hede vnto the law, & the people stode in theyr place. ⁸ And they red in the boke of the lawe of God distinctly & planely, so the men vnderstode the thinge that was red. ⁹ And Nehemiah (whyche is Hathirsatha) & Esdras the prest and scrybe, and the Leuites that caused the people to take hede, sayde vnto all the people: thys daye is holy vnto the Lord youre God: be not ye sory therfore, & wepe not. For all the people wepte when they hearde the wordes of the lawe.

¹⁶ And the people wente vp, and fet them, & made them bothes, euerye one vpon the rofe of hys house, and in theyr courtes, and in the courtes of the house of GOD, and in the strete by the Watergate, and in the strete by porte Ephraim.

³⁷ towarde the wellgate, and they went vp ouer agaynste them vpon the steppes of the cytie of Dauid at the goynge vp of the wall to the house of Dauid, vnto the watergate Eastewarde.

²⁰ Yf any man want lyght, let hym loke vpon the lawe and the testimony, whether they speake not after thys meaninge.

⁸ Howe darre ye saye then: we are wyse, we haue the lawe of the Lorde amonge vs. Beholde, the disceytfull penne of the scrybes, setteth forth lyes: ⁹ therfore shall the wyse be confounded, they shalbe afrayed and taken: for lo, they haue caste oute the worde of the Lorde: what wysdom can then be among them?

⁴ Remembre the lawe of Moses my seruaunt whyche I commytted vnto hym in Oreb for al Israel, with the stratutes and ordynaunces.

⁵² Then sayd he vnto them. Therfore euery Scribe which is taught vnto the kyngdome of heauen is lyke an housholder, whiche bringeth forth, out of his treasur, thinges both new & old.

² sayinge: The Scribes and the Phariseis sit in Moyses seate.

¹³ Wo be vnto you Scribes and Phariseis, hypocrites, for ye shut vp the kyngdome of heauen before men: ye youre selues go not in, neyther suffer ye them that come to enter in.

³⁴ Wherfore, behold I send vnto you Prophetes, wise men, & Scribes. Of them ye shal kyl and crucifye: and of them ye shall scourge in your synagoges, and persecute from citye to citye
