¹ Keep silence before me, O islands and let the peoples renew their strength. Let them come near, then let them speak. Let us come near together to judgment. ² Who raised up the righteous man from the east, calls him to his foot, gives nations before him and makes him rule over kings? He gives them as the dust to his sword, as the driven stubble to his bow. ³ He pursues them and passes on safely, even by a way that he had not gone with his feet. ⁴ Who has worked and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, Jehovah, the first and with the last, I am he.
⁵ The isles have seen and fear. The ends of the earth tremble, they draw near and come. ⁶ They help every man his neighbor and says to his brother, Be of good courage.
⁷ So the carpenter encourages the goldsmith, he who smooths with the hammer, he who slays the anvil, saying of the soldering, It is good and he fastens it with nails, that it should not be shaken.
⁸ But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend, ⁹ you whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the earth and called from the corners of it and said to you, You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you away.
¹⁰ Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
¹¹ 1 Behold, all those who are incensed against you will be put to shame and confounded. Those who strive with you will be as nothing and will perish. ¹² You will seek them and will not find them, even those who contend with you. Those who war against you will be as nothing and as a thing of nothing. ¹³ For I, Jehovah your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, Do not fear, I will help you.
¹⁴ Do not fear, you worm Jacob and you* men of Israel. I will help you, says Jehovah and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. ¹⁵ Behold, I have made you as a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth. You will thresh the mountains and beat them small and will make the hills as chaff. ¹⁶ You will winnow them and the wind will carry them away and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you will rejoice in Jehovah. You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.
¹⁷ The poor and needy seek water and there is none and their tongue fails for thirst. I, Jehovah, will answer them. I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers on the bare heights and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water. ¹⁹ I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia and the myrtle and the oil tree. I will set in the desert the fir tree, the pine and the box tree together, ²⁰ that they may see and know and consider and understand together, that the hand of Jehovah has done this and the Holy One of Israel has created it.
²¹ Produce your* case, says Jehovah. Bring forth your* strong reasons, says the King of Jacob. ²² Let them bring forth and declare to us what will happen. Declare the former things, what they are, that we may consider them and know the latter end of them, or show us things to come.
²³ Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you* are gods. Yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed and behold it together. ²⁴ Behold, you* are of nothing and your* work is of nothing. An abomination is he who chooses you*.
²⁵ I have raised up him from the north and he has come, he who calls upon my name from the rising of the sun. And he will come upon rulers as upon mortar and as the potter treads clay.
²⁶ Who has declared it from the beginning, that we may know and formerly, that we may say, He is right? Yes, there is none who declares. Yes, there is none who shows. Yes, there is none who hears your* words.
²⁷ First to Zion. Behold, behold them and I will give to Jerusalem he who brings good news.
²⁸ And when I look, there is no man. Even among them there is no counselor, that, when I ask of them, can answer a word. ²⁹ Behold, all of them, their works are vanity and nothing. Their molten images are wind and confusion.

³ O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat!
⁴ I would set my case in order before him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would give heed to me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him. So I should be delivered forever from my judge.

³⁵ O that I had someone to hear me (Behold, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me) and that I had the indictment which my adversary has written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder. I would bind it to me as a crown.

³ Gird up now your loins like a man, for I will demand of you and declare you to me.

¹⁸ Come now and let us reason together, says Jehovah, though your* sins be as scarlet, they will be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they will be as wool.

⁹ Make an uproar, O you* peoples and be broken in pieces. And listen, all you* of far countries. Gird yourselves and be broken in pieces. Gird yourselves and be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together and it will be brought to nothing. Speak the word and it will not stand, for God is with us.

¹¹ And it will happen in that day, that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, who will remain, from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Shinar and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea.

¹ Come near, you* nations, to hear. And listen, peoples. Let the earth hear and the fullness of it, the world and all things that come out from it.

¹ Listen, O isles, to me and listen, you* peoples from far. Jehovah has called me from the womb. From the guts of my mother he has made mention of my name.

⁸ He is near who justifies me. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who is my adversary? Let him come near to me.

¹⁰ Beat your* plowshares into swords and your* pruning-hooks into spears. Let the weak say, I am strong.
¹¹ You* hasten and come, all you* nations all around and gather yourselves together. Cause your mighty ones to come down there, O Jehovah.

¹ Hear now what Jehovah says: Arise, contend before the mountains and let the hills hear your voice. ² Hear, O you* mountains, Jehovah's controversy and you* enduring foundations of the earth, for Jehovah has a controversy with his people and he will contend with Israel.
³ O my people, what have I done to you? And in what have I wearied you? Testify against me.

²⁰ But Jehovah is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before him.

¹ For this Melchizedek, King of Salem, priest of the Highest God, who met Abraham returning from the butcher of the kings and blessed him,

⁸ In faith, Abraham obeyed, being called to go out to the place which he was about to receive for an inheritance, and he went out, not knowing where he was going. ⁹ In faith, he sojourned in the land of promise, as an alien, having dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the joint heirs of the same promise. ¹⁰ For he was waiting for the city which has the foundations, whose craftsman and contractor is God.

²⁴ And you will know that your tent is in peace and you will visit your fold and will miss nothing.

¹² Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and measured out heaven with the span and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

²⁶ Lift up your* eyes on high and see who has created these, who brings out their host by number. He calls them all by name, by the greatness of his might. And because he is strong in power, not one is lacking.

²⁶ Who has declared it from the beginning, that we may know and formerly, that we may say, He is right? Yes, there is none who declares. Yes, there is none who shows. Yes, there is none who hears your* words.

²⁴ Who gave Jacob for a spoil and Israel to the robbers? Did not Jehovah? He against whom we have sinned and in whose ways they would not walk, nor were they obedient to his law.

¹⁰ You* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and my servant whom I have chosen, that you* may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, nor will there be after me.

⁶ Jehovah says thus, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: I am the first and I am the last and besides me there is no God.
⁷ And who, as I, will call and will declare it and set it in order for me, since I established the people of old? And let them declare the things that are coming and that will happen.

³ Listen to me, O house of Jacob and all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from their birth, who have been carried from the womb. ⁴ And even to old age I am he and even to hoar hairs I will carry you *. I have made and I will bear, yes, I will carry and will deliver.

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning and from long-ago things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel will stand and I will do all my pleasure,

³ I have declared the former things from of old. Yes, they went forth out of my mouth and I showed them. Suddenly I did them and they happened.
⁴ Because I knew that you are obstinate and your neck is an iron muscle and your brow brass, ⁵ therefore I have declared it to you from of old. Before it happened I showed it to you, lest you should say, My idol has done them. And my graven image and my molten image, has commanded them.
⁶ You have heard it, behold all this and you*, will you* not declare it? I have shown you new things from this time, even hidden things, which you have not known. ⁷ They are created now and not from of old. And you have not heard them before this day, lest you should say, Behold, I knew them.

¹² Listen to me, O Jacob and Israel my called: I am he. I am the first. I also am the last.

²³ ‘Behold, the virgin will be pregnant, and will be bearing a son, and they will call his name Immanuel'; which is, after being translated, ‘God with us.’

²⁰ teaching them to observe all things, as many things as I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the earth.

²⁶ And he made of one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons and the borders of their residence;

⁸ I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

¹¹ saying, What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven congregations : to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamus and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.

¹³ I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

⁵ From these were the islands of the nations divided in their lands, every man according to his tongue, according to their families, in their nations.

¹⁴ The peoples have heard, they tremble. Pangs have taken hold on the inhabitants of Philistia.

¹⁰ For we have heard how Jehovah dried up the water of the Red Sea before you* when you* came out of Egypt and what you* did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you* utterly destroyed.

¹ And it happened, when all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how that Jehovah had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the sons of Israel until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the sons of Israel.

⁸ They who also dwell in the outermost parts are afraid at your signs. You make the risings of the morning and evening to rejoice.

³ Say to God, How awesome are your works! Through the greatness of your power your enemies will submit themselves to you.

⁷ God will bless us and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

¹⁵ The lord Jehovah says thus to Tyre: Shall not the isles shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when the slaughter is made in the midst of you? ¹⁶ Then all the rulers of the sea will come down from their thrones and lie aside their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling. They will sit upon the ground and will tremble every moment and be astonished at you.

⁷ And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God has come into the camp. And they said, Woe to us! For there has not been such a thing yesterday and the day before. ⁸ Woe to us! Who will deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that killed* the Egyptians with all manner of plagues in the wilderness.
⁹ Be strong and strengthen yourselves like men, O you* Philistines, that you* are not servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you*. Conduct yourselves like men and fight.

³ And when those of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon and set him in his place again.
⁴ And when they arose early on the morning of the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands lay cut off upon the threshold. Only the stump of Dagon was left to him. ⁵ Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day.

⁴ Say to those who are of a fearful heart, Be strong, do not fear. Behold, your* God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you*.

¹ Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and the breadth of it six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
² Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
³ Then the satraps, the deputies and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
⁴ Then the herald cried aloud, To you* it is commanded, O peoples, nations and languages, ⁵ that at what time you* hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, trigon, psaltery, dulcimer and all kinds of music, you* fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up. ⁶ And he who does not fall down and worship will the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
⁷ Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, trigon, psaltery and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations and the languages, fell down and worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

⁹ Proclaim you* this among the nations: Prepare war. Stir up the mighty men. Let all the men of war draw near. Let them come up.

²⁴ For a certain man, Demetrius by name, (a silversmith making miniature silver temples of Artemis), was providing not just a small business to the craftsmen; ²⁵ whom he accumulated together the other workers of such things and said, Men, you know our prosperity is from this business. ²⁶ And you view and hear, that not only from Ephesus, but almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and seduced a considerable crowd, saying that they are not gods, those born through man’s hands. ²⁷ But not only is this part for us in peril and it is to go into disrepute but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis is to be counted as nothing and her majesty is about to be demolished, what the whole of Asia and inhabited-earth is worshiping.
²⁸ Now having heard this, and having become full of fury, they were crying out, saying, Great is Artemis of Ephesus.

¹⁷ And the five men who went to spy out the land went up and came in there and took the graven image and the ephod and the household-idol and the molten image. And the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men girded with weapons of war. ¹⁸ And when these went into Micah's house and fetched the graven image, the ephod and the household-idol and the molten image, the priest said to them, What do you* say?

²⁴ And he said, you* have taken away my gods which I made and the priest and have gone away and what have I more? And how do you* then say to me, What troubles you?

¹³ The carpenter stretches out a line. He marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes. And he marks it out with the compasses and shapes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. ¹⁴ He hews down cedars for him and takes the cypress tree and the oak and strengthens for himself one among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir tree and the rain nourishes it.
¹⁵ Then it will be for a man to burn. And he takes of it and warms himself. Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god and worships it. He makes it a graven image and falls down to it.

⁶ Such as lavish gold out of the bag and weigh silver in the balance, they hire a goldsmith and he makes it a god. They fall down, yes, they worship. ⁷ They bear it upon the shoulder. They carry it and set it in its place and it stands. From its place it will not remove. Yes, he may cry to it, yet it cannot answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

³ For the customs of the peoples are vanity.
For a man cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe. ⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it not move. ⁵ They are like a palm tree, of turned work and do not speak. They must be carried, because they cannot go. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor is it in them to do good.

⁹ There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz, the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith, blue and purple for their clothing. They are all the work of skillful men.

⁵ Now therefore, if you* will obey my voice indeed and keep my covenant, then you* will be my own possession from among all peoples, for all the earth is mine, ⁶ and you* will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you will speak to the sons of Israel.

⁴² For they are my servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt. They will not be sold as bondmen.

⁶ For you are a holy people to Jehovah your God. Jehovah your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. ⁷ Jehovah did not set his love upon you*, nor choose you*, because you* were more in number than any people, for you* were the fewest of all peoples, ⁸ but because Jehovah loves you*. And because he would keep the oath which he swore to your* fathers, Jehovah has brought you* out with a mighty hand and redeemed you* out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt.

¹⁵ Only Jehovah had a delight in your fathers to love them and he chose their seed after them, even you* above all peoples as at this day.

² For you are a holy people to Jehovah your God and Jehovah has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

⁷ Did you not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it to the seed of Abraham your friend everlasting?

¹² The nation whose God is Jehovah is fortunate, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

⁶ O you* seed of Abraham his servant, you* sons of Jacob, his chosen.

⁴² Because he remembered his holy word and Abraham his servant. ⁴³ And he brought out his people with joy and his chosen with singing.
⁴⁴ And he gave them the lands of the nations and they took the labor of the peoples in possession, ⁴⁵ that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise Jehovah.

⁴ Because Jehovah has chosen Jacob to himself, Israel for his own possession.

²² Therefore Jehovah says thus, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob: Jacob will not now be ashamed, nor will his face now grow pale.

¹ But now Jehovah says thus who created you, O Jacob and he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, You are mine.

¹ Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant and Israel, whom I have chosen. ² Jehovah says thus who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: Do not fear, O Jacob my servant and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

²¹ Remember these things, O Jacob and Israel, for you are my servant. I have formed you. You are my servant, O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.

³ And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

² Look to Abraham your* father and to Sarah who bore you*. For when he was but one I called him and I blessed him and made him many.

¹⁶ For you are our Father, though Abraham knows us not and Israel does not acknowledge us, you, O Jehovah, are our Father, our Redeemer, from everlasting is your name.

²⁴ Do you not consider what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which Jehovah chose, he has cast them off? Thus they despise my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.

⁹ Do not think to say among yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able to lift up children out of these stones for Abraham.

³³ They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed and have been enslaved to no one at anytime. How do you say, You will become free?
³⁴ Jesus answered them, Assuredly, assuredly, I am saying to you, Everyone who practices sin is the bondservant of sin.
³⁵ Now the bondservant does not abide in the house forever; the son abides forever. ³⁶ Therefore, if the Son makes you free, you really will be free. ³⁷ I know that you are Abraham’s seed; yet you are seeking to kill me, because my word is not making room in you in your^\'b0 hearts. ³⁸ I am speaking the things which I have seen from my Father and therefore you are practicing what you have seen from your father. ³⁹ They answered and said to him, Our father is Abraham.
Jesus says to them, If you were Abraham’s children, were you ever practicing the works of Abraham? ⁴⁰ But now you are seeking to kill me, a man who has spoken the truth to you, which I heard from God. Abraham did not ever do this. ⁴¹ You are practicing the works of your father.
Therefore they said to him, We have not been born from fornication; we have one Father–God.
⁴² Therefore Jesus said to them, If God was your Father, you would love me; for I came out and have come from God; for neither have I come from myself, but from that one who sent me. ⁴³ Why do you not know my speech? Is it because you are not able to hear my word? ⁴⁴ You are from your father, the devil, and you to do the lusts of your father. That one was a murderer from the beginning and is not standing in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own things, because he is a liar and the father of it.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you practice as many things as I command you. ¹⁵ I call you bondservants no more, because the bondservant does not know what his lord is doing, but I have called you friends, because all the things which I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.

¹² and the father of circumcision, to those not only from the circumcision, but to those who also are marching in the footprints of the faith of our father Abraham which he had in uncircumcision.
¹³ For the promise was to Abraham, or to his seed, for him to be heir of the world, but not through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

⁴ who are Israelites, whose is the sonship and the glory and the covenants and the institution of the law and the divine service and the promises; ⁵ whose are the fathers and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all: God is gracious forever. Amen.
⁶ But it is not such-as that the word of God has fallen short. For they are not all Israel, (those who are from Israel); ⁷ neither are they all children, because they are Abraham’s seed, but instead, ‘In Isaac your seed will be called.’ ⁸ This thing is, the children of the flesh, these are not children of God, but the children of the promise are counted for a seed.

¹⁹ Therefore why was the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed would come to whom it has been promised; having been appointed through messengers by the hand of an intermediary.

²² For it has been written, that Abraham had two sons, one from the maidservant and one from the free woman. \ulnone\nosupersub ²³ But indeed the one from the maidservant has been born according to the flesh, but the one from the free woman has been born through the promise. ²⁴ Which things are allegorized; for these women are two covenants; indeed one from Mount Sinai, who is Hagar, giving-birth to children into bondage. ²⁵ For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the Jerusalem which is now and she is enslaved with her children. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of all of us. ²⁷ For it has been written, ‘Barren one who is not bearing children, be joyous; burst forth and cry, the one who are not travailing, because many more are the children of the desolate rather than from her who has the husband.’ ²⁸ Now brethren, we are children of the promise according to Isaac. ²⁹ But just-like then, he who was born according to the flesh was persecuting the one who was born according to the Spirit, so it is also now. ³⁰ But what does the Scripture say? Cast out the maidservant and her son; for the son of the maidservant may never inherit with the son of the free woman. \ulnone\nosupersub ³¹ Consequently, brethren, we are not children of a maidservant, but of the free woman.

²³ And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘And Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness,' and he was called the friend of God.

⁶ For you are a holy people to Jehovah your God. Jehovah your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. ⁷ Jehovah did not set his love upon you*, nor choose you*, because you* were more in number than any people, for you* were the fewest of all peoples,

² And Joshua said to all the people, Jehovah says thus, the God of Israel: Your* fathers dwelt of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor and they served other gods. ³ And I took your* father Abraham from beyond the River and led him throughout all the land of Canaan and multiplied his seed and gave him Isaac. ⁴ And I gave to Isaac, Jacob and Esau. And I gave to Esau Mount Seir to possess it. And Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.

²² For Jehovah will not forsake his people for his great name's sake, because it has pleased Jehovah to make you* a people to himself.

⁷ You are Jehovah, the God who chose Abram and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name of Abraham, ⁸ and found his heart faithful before you and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed and have performed your words, for you are righteous.
⁹ And you saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heard their cry by the Red Sea, ¹⁰ and showed signs and wonders upon Pharaoh and on all his servants and on all the people of his land, for you knew that they dealt proudly against them and got you a name, as it is this day. ¹¹ And you divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land. And you cast their pursuers into the depths as a stone into the mighty waters. ¹² Moreover in a pillar of cloud you led them by day and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.
¹³ You also came down upon Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, ¹⁴ and made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law, by Moses your servant.
¹⁵ And you gave them bread from heaven for their hunger and brought out water for them out of the rock for their thirst and commanded them that they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.
¹⁶ But they and our fathers dealt proudly and stiffened their neck and did not listen to your commandments, ¹⁷ and refused to obey, neither were mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but stiffened their neck. And in their rebellion they appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and did not forsake them.
¹⁸ Yes, when they had made a molten calf for them and said, This is your God that brought you up out of Egypt and had worked great provocations, ¹⁹ yet you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud did not depart from over them by day to lead them in the way, neither the pillar of fire by night to show them light and the way in which they should go.
²⁰ You also gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. ²¹ Yes, forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing; their clothes did not grow old and their feet did not swell.
²² Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted after their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. ²³ Their sons you also multiplied as the stars of heaven and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers that they should go in to possess it.
²⁴ So the sons went in and possessed the land. And you subdued the inhabitants of the land before them, the Canaanites and gave them into their hands, with their kings and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would. ²⁵ And they took fortified cities and a fat land and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards and olive-groves and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.
²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them again to you and they worked great provocations.
²⁷ Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them. And in the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven and according to your great mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.
²⁸ But after they had rest, they again did evil before you. Therefore you left them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them. Yet when they returned and cried to you, you heard from heaven and many times you delivered them according to your mercies, ²⁹ and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly and did not listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances (which if a man does, he will live in them) and withdrew the shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not hear.
³⁰ Yet many years you prolonged with them and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not listen. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands. ³¹ Nevertheless in your great mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them, for you are a gracious and merciful God. ³² Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, do not let all the travail seem little before you, that has come upon us, on our kings, on our rulers and on our priests and on our prophets and on our fathers and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.
³³ However you are just in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly, ³⁴ neither have our kings, our rulers, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them. ³⁵ For they have not served you in their kingdom and in your great goodness that you gave them and in the large and fat land which you gave before them, neither did they turn from their wicked works.
³⁶ Behold, we are servants this day and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat the fruit of it and the good of it, behold, we are servants in it. ³⁷ And it yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. Also they have power over our bodies and over our cattle, at their pleasure and we are in great distress. ³⁸ And yet for all this we make a sure covenant and write it and our rulers, our Levites, and our priests, seal to it.

¹⁴ Because Jehovah will not cast off his people, nor will he forsake his inheritance.

² Let the redeemed of Jehovah say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary, ³ and gathered out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

² Who raised up the righteous man from the east, calls him to his foot, gives nations before him and makes him rule over kings? He gives them as the dust to his sword, as the driven stubble to his bow.

⁸ But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend,

⁵ Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bring your seed from the east and gather you from the west. ⁶ I will say to the north, Give up and to the south, Do not keep back. Bring my sons from far and my daughters from the end of the earth,

²⁵ Jehovah says thus: If my covenant of day and night stand not, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth, ²⁶ then I will also cast away the seed of Jacob and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will cause their captivity to return and will have mercy on them.

²⁹ And they will be coming from the east and west and north and south, and will be reclining in the kingdom of God.

¹ Therefore I say, God has not thrust away his people, has he? Let it not happen! For I am also an Israelite, from the seed of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. ² God did not thrust away his people which he knew beforehand. Or do you not know what the Scripture says by Elijah? How he petitions God against Israel, saying,

²⁶ For you see your calling brethren, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble. ²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world, in order that he might shame the wise, and God chose the weak things of the world, in order that he might shame the strong; ²⁸ and God chose the ignoble things of the world and the things which have been scorned and the things which are not, in order that he might do-away-with the things which are; ²⁹ that no flesh might boast in God’s sight.

⁵ Listen, my beloved brethren. Did God not choose the poor of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to those who love him?

⁹ And they are singing a new song, saying, You are worthy to take the book and to open its seals, because you were slaughtered and bought us in your blood for God out of every tribe and language and people and nation.

¹ After these things the word of Jehovah came to Abram in a vision, saying, Do not fear, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.

¹ When you go forth to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots, and a people more than you, you will not be afraid of them, for Jehovah your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

⁶ Be strong and of good courage, do not fear, nor be frightened at them, for Jehovah your God, he it is who goes with you. He will not leave you, nor forsake you.
⁷ And Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of good courage. For you will go with this people into the land which Jehovah has sworn to their fathers to give them and you will cause them to inherit it. ⁸ And Jehovah, he it is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you, nor forsake you. Do not fear, neither be dismayed.

²⁷ The God of long-ago is your dwelling-place and underneath are the everlasting arms. And he thrust out the enemy from before you and said, Destroy. ²⁸ And Israel dwells in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and new wine. Yes, his heavens drop down dew. ²⁹ You are fortunate, O Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by Jehovah, the shield of your help and the sword of your excellency! And your enemies will submit themselves to you and you will tread upon their high places.

⁹ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage. Do not be frightened, neither be dismayed, for Jehovah your God is with you wherever you go.

¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the thirty, and he said, We are yours, David and on your side, you son of Jesse. Peace, peace be to you and peace be to your helpers, for your God helps you. Then David received them and made them captains of the band.

¹⁷ You* will not need to fight in this battle. Set yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of Jehovah with you*, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not fear, nor be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, for Jehovah is with you*.

⁸ With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

¹ Jehovah is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? Jehovah is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?

¹¹ Jehovah will give strength to his people. Jehovah will bless his people with peace.

¹⁷ Because the arms of the wicked will be broken, but Jehovah upholds the righteous.

²⁴ Because if he falls, he will not be utterly cast down, because Jehovah upholds him with his hand.

¹² And as for me, you uphold me in my integrity and set me before your face everlasting.

¹ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
² Therefore we will not fear, though the earth changes and though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas,

⁸ My soul follows close after you. Your right hand upholds me.

⁵ You will answer us in righteousness by awesome things, O God of our salvation, you who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of those who are from afar off upon the sea,

¹³ You have a mighty arm. Strong is your hand and high is your right hand.
¹⁴ Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face.

⁴ The king’s strength also loves justice. You establish uprightness. You execute justice and righteousness in Jacob.

⁸ whose mouth speaks deceit and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

¹¹ Rescue me and deliver me out of the hand of aliens, whose mouth speaks deceit and whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

¹⁴ Jehovah upholds all who fall and raises up all those who are bowed down.

¹² Praise Jehovah, O Jerusalem. Praise your God, O Zion.

² Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust and will not be afraid, for Jehovah, even Jehovah, is my strength and song and he has become my salvation.

²⁹ He gives power to the faint. And to him who has no might he increases strength.
³⁰ Even the youths will faint and be weary and the young men will utterly fall. ³¹ But those who wait for Jehovah will renew their strength. They will mount up with pinions like eagles. They will run and not be weary. They will walk and not faint.

¹³ For I, Jehovah your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, Do not fear, I will help you.
¹⁴ Do not fear, you worm Jacob and you* men of Israel. I will help you, says Jehovah and your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.

¹ But now Jehovah says thus who created you, O Jacob and he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, You are mine. ² When you pass through the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, nor will the flame kindle upon you.

⁵ Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bring your seed from the east and gather you from the west.

² Jehovah says thus who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: Do not fear, O Jacob my servant and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

⁸ Jehovah says thus, In an acceptable time I have heard you and in a day of salvation I have helped you. And I will preserve you and give you for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages,

¹² I, even I, am he who comforts you*. Who are you, that you are afraid of man who will die and of the son of man who will be made as grass, ¹³ and have forgotten Jehovah your maker, who stretched forth the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth and fear continually all the day because of the fury of the oppressor, when he makes ready to destroy? And where is the fury of the oppressor?

⁷ How lovely are the feet of him who brings good news upon the mountains, who proclaims peace, who brings good news of good, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns!

¹⁹ The sun will no more be your light by day, nor for brightness will the moon give light to you, but Jehovah will be to you an everlasting light and your God your glory.

⁹ And Jehovah said, Call his name Lo-ammi, for you* are not my people and I will not be yours*.

¹² And I will strengthen them in Jehovah and they will walk up and down in his name, says Jehovah.

⁹ And I will bring the third part into the fire and will refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried. They will call on my name and I will hear them. I will say, It is my people and they will say, Jehovah is my God.

¹³ But the messenger said to him, Do not fear, Zacharias, because your supplication was heard and your wife Elisabeth will be giving-birth to a son to you and you will call his name John.

³⁰ And the messenger said to her, Do not fear, Mary; for you have found favor with God.

¹⁰ And the messenger said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good-news of great joy which will be to all the people, ¹¹ because there was born to you today in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

⁵⁴ Jesus answered, If I am glorifying myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me; of whom you say, that he is our God. ⁵⁵ And you have not known him, but I know him, and if I say, I do not know him, I will be similar to you, a liar, but I know him and I am keeping his word.

³¹ Therefore what will we say to these things? If God is working on our behalf, who is against us?

⁹ And he has said to me, My grace is enough for you; for my power is completed in weakness. Therefore I will rather gladly be boasting in my weaknesses, in order that the power of the Christ might reside upon me.

¹⁶ in order that he may give to you, according to the riches of his glory, to be powerful with his power, through his Spirit in the inward man;

¹³ I am strong in all things in the Christ, who is empowering me.

⁸ And all these your servants will come down to me and bow themselves down to me, saying, You get out and all the people who follow you. And after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger.

²² But if you will indeed listen to his voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

⁸ And it will be as when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats. But he awakes and his soul is empty. Or as when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks. But he awakes, and behold, he is faint and his soul has appetite. So will the multitude of all the nations be that fight against Mount Zion.

¹⁷ All the nations are as nothing before him. They are accounted by him as less than nothing and vanity.

²⁴ Behold, you* are of nothing and your* work is of nothing. An abomination is he who chooses you*.

²⁹ Behold, all of them, their works are vanity and nothing. Their molten images are wind and confusion.

²⁴ Only in Jehovah, it is said of me, is righteousness and strength. Even to him men will come and all those who were incensed against him will be put to shame.

²⁶ And I will feed those who oppress you with their own flesh. And they will be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine. And all flesh will know that I, Jehovah, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prosper. And every tongue that will rise against you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Jehovah and their righteousness which is of me, says Jehovah.

¹² For that nation and kingdom that will not serve you will perish. Yes, those nations will be utterly wasted. ¹³ The glory of Lebanon will come to you, the fir tree, the pine and the box tree together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary. And I will make the place of my feet glorious. ¹⁴ And the sons of those who afflicted you will come bending to you. And all those who despised you will bow themselves down at the soles of your feet. And they will call you The city of Jehovah, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. And none can stay his hand, or say to him, What are you doing?

³ And it will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

⁸ But Elymas the magician (for so is his name by translation) was standing against them, seeking to pervert the proconsul away from the faith. ⁹ But Saul, also called Paul, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, stared toward him, ¹⁰ and said, O full of all treachery and all villainy, you son of the devil, enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? ¹¹ And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and will not see the sun till the next season. Now instantly dimness and darkness fell upon him, and going around, he was seeking someone to lead him by the hand.

³⁹ And when they came, they pleaded with them, and having led them outside, they asked them to go out away from the city.

⁹ Behold, I give those from the synagogue of the Adversary, those who say they are themselves Jews and they are not, but are lying, behold, I will make them in order that they should come and should worship in the sight of your feet and should know that I have loved you.

⁷ yet he will perish forever like his own manure. Those who have seen him will say, Where is he? ⁸ He will fly away as a dream and will not be found. Yes, he will be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him will see him no more, neither will his place any more behold him.

³⁵ I have seen a wicked man in great power and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But I passed by, and behold, he was not. Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁴ At eventide, behold, terror, and before the morning they are not. This is the portion of those who despoil us and the lot of those who rob us.

²⁶ There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides upon the heavens for your help and in his excellency on the skies.

²³ Nevertheless I am continually with you. You have held my right hand.

³¹ Because he will stand at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who judge his soul.

¹⁰ Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

⁶ I, Jehovah, have called you in righteousness and will hold your hand and will keep you and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles,

⁶ I will say to the north, Give up and to the south, Do not keep back. Bring my sons from far and my daughters from the end of the earth,

¹⁸ There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she has brought forth, nor is there any who takes her by the hand among all the sons that she has brought up.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood beside me and empowered me; in order that the preaching might be fully assured through me and in order that all the Gentiles might hear and I was rescued out of the mouth of the lion.

⁷ Jehovah did not set his love upon you*, nor choose you*, because you* were more in number than any people, for you* were the fewest of all peoples,

²⁵ But as for me I know that my Redeemer lives and at last he will stand up upon the earth.

⁶ How much less man, who is a worm! And the son of man, who is a worm!

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Jehovah, my rock and my redeemer.

⁶ But I am a worm and no man, a reproach of men and despised by the people.

¹⁴ Jehovah says thus, your* Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: For your* sake I have sent to Babylon and I will bring down all of them as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships of their rejoicing.

⁶ Jehovah says thus, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: I am the first and I am the last and besides me there is no God.

²⁴ Jehovah says thus, your Redeemer and he who formed you from the womb: I am Jehovah, who makes all things, who stretches forth the heavens alone, who spreads abroad the earth (who is with me?),

⁴ Our Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁷ Jehovah says thus, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am Jehovah your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.

⁷ Jehovah says thus, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despises, to him whom the nation abhors, to a servant of rulers. Kings will see and arise, rulers and they will worship, because of Jehovah who is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.

⁵ For your maker is your husband. Jehovah of hosts is his name. And the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth.

⁸ In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you, says Jehovah your Redeemer.

²⁰ And he who redeems will come to Zion and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob, says Jehovah.

¹⁶ You will also suck the milk of the nations and will suck the breast of kings. And you will know that I, Jehovah, am your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong. Jehovah of hosts is his name. He will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth and shake the inhabitants of Babylon.

¹⁴ Why is it? Narrow is the gate and pressed is the way, which is leading to life and few are those who are finding it.

³² Do not fear, little flock, because your Father was delighted to give you the kingdom.

²⁷ Now Isaiah cries on behalf of Israel, ‘If the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved;

¹³ Christ bought us up out of the curse of the law, having become a curse on our behalf; for it has been written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree,’

¹⁴ who gave himself on our behalf, in order that he might redeem us away from all lawlessness and might cleanse a treasured people for himself, zealous of good works.

⁴² Then I beat them small as the dust before the wind. I cast them out as the mud of the streets.

¹⁰ O my threshing and the grain of my floor! What I have heard from Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, I have declared to you*.

²⁷ For the chick-peas are not threshed with a sharp instrument, nor is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin, but the chick-peas are beaten out with a staff and the cummin with a rod.

¹³ Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion, for I will make your horn iron and I will make your hoofs brass and you will beat many peoples in pieces. And I will devote their gain to Jehovah and their substance to the Lord of the whole earth.

¹² You marched though the land in indignation. You threshed the nations in anger.

⁷ Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become a plain and he will bring forth the top stone with shouts of Favor, favor, to it.

⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but are mighty in God, toward the demolition of strongholds, ⁵ demolishing evil reasonings and every exalted thing which is lifting itself up against the knowledge of God and capturing every device of the Adversary to the obedience of the Christ;

¹ And Hannah prayed and said, My heart rejoices in Jehovah. My heart is exalted in Jehovah. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies because I rejoice in your salvation. ² There is none holy as Jehovah, for there is none besides you, neither is there any rock like our God.

⁴ The wicked are not so, because they are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

⁶ Cry aloud and shout, you inhabitant of Zion, for great in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

¹³ The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters, but he will rebuke them. And they will flee far off and will be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹ O Jehovah, you are my God. I will exalt you. I will praise your name. For you have done wonderful things, even counsels of old, in faithfulness and truth. ² For you have made of a city a heap, of a fortified city a ruin, a palace of strangers to be no city. It will not be built everlasting.
³ Therefore a strong people will glorify you, a city of oppressive nations will fear you.

²⁴ Only in Jehovah, it is said of me, is righteousness and strength. Even to him men will come and all those who were incensed against him will be put to shame. ²⁵ In Jehovah all the seed of Israel will be justified and will glory.

¹⁰ I will greatly rejoice in Jehovah. My soul will be joyful in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
¹¹ For as the earth brings forth its bud and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

²³ Jehovah says thus: Do not let the wise man glory in his wisdom, nor let the mighty man glory in his might. Do not let the rich man glory in his riches, ²⁴ but let he who boasts boast in this, that he has understanding and knows me, that I am Jehovah who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness, in the earth. For in these things I delight, says Jehovah.

⁷ And I have winnowed them with a fan in the gates of the land. I have bereaved them of sons. I have destroyed my people. They did not return from their ways.

² And I will send strangers to Babylon, who will winnow her and they will empty her land. For in the day of trouble they will be against her all around.

¹⁸ yet I will rejoice in Jehovah. I will joy in the God of my salvation.

¹² whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will be thoroughly cleansing his threshing floor, and he will be gathering his grain into the barn, but the chaff he will be burning up with unquenchable fire.

⁴⁶ And Mary said, My soul extols the Lord, ⁴⁷ and my spirit was glad in God my Savior.

¹¹ and not only so, but we are also boasting in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

³⁰ But you are from him, in Christ Jesus, who has become to us wisdom and righteousness and holiness and redemption from God; ³¹ that, just-as it has been written, ‘He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.’

³ For we are the circumcision, who are giving-divine service in the spirit of God, and boast in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;

¹⁵ And behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you again into this land. For I will not leave you, until I have done what I have spoken to you.

³ And the people thirsted there for water. And the people murmured against Moses and said, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our sons and our cattle with thirst?

⁶ Behold, I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb and you will kill* the rock and there will come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹⁸ And he was very thirsty and called on Jehovah and said, You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant and now shall I die for thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? ¹⁹ But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi and water came out there. And when he had drunk his spirit came again and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.

¹⁵ My strength is dried up like an earthen vessel and my tongue clings to my jaws and you have set me into the dust of death.

⁶ This poor man cried and Jehovah heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

² My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you and you will glorify me.

¹ O God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you, my flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where is no water. ² So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory.

⁹ You, O God, sent a plentiful rain. You confirmed your inheritance when it was weary. ¹⁰ Your congregation dwelt in it. You, O God, prepared for the poor from your goodness.

¹² Because he will deliver a needy man when he cries and a poor man, who has no helper. ¹³ He will have pity on a poor and needy man and he will save the souls of the needy.

¹⁶ Because Jehovah has built up Zion. He has appeared in his glory.
¹⁷ He has regarded the prayer of the destitute and has not despised their prayer.

⁵ Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
⁶ Then they cried to Jehovah in their trouble and he delivered them out of their distresses.

¹⁹ For the people will dwell in Zion at Jerusalem. You will weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the voice of your cry. When he will hear, he will answer you.

¹⁶ And I will bring the blind by a way that they do not know. I will lead them in paths that they do not know. I will make darkness light before them and crooked places straight. These things I will do and I will not forsake them.

²⁰ The beasts of the field will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen,

³ For I will pour water upon him who is thirsty and streams upon the dry ground. I will pour my Spirit upon your seed and my blessing upon your offspring.

¹ Ho, everyone who thirsts, come you* to the waters. And he who has no money, come you*, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

¹ The Spirit of the lord Jehovah is upon me, because Jehovah has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind and the opening of bonds to those who are bound,

² For all these things my hand has made and all these things came to be, says Jehovah.
But to this man I will look, even to him who is poor and of a crushed spirit and who trembles at my word.

⁴ The tongue of the sucking child clings to the roof of his mouth for thirst. The young sons ask bread and no man breaks it to them.

¹¹ Behold, the days come, says the lord Jehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of Jehovah. ¹² And they will wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east. They will run to and fro to seek the word of Jehovah and will not find it. ¹³ In that day the fair virgins and the young men will faint for thirst.

³ The poor in spirit are fortunate, because theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

⁶ Those who hunger and are thirsty for righteousness are fortunate, because they will be fed.

²⁴ And having shouted, he said, Father Abraham, show-mercy to me, and send Lazarus in order that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and may cool my tongue, because I am in anguish in this flame.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that says to you, Give to me some water to drink; you would have asked him, and he would have given living water to you.
¹¹ The woman says to him, Lord, you have no bucket and the well is deep. Therefore from where do you have the living water? ¹² You are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank out of it himself and his sons and his livestock, are you?
¹³ Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks from this water will be thirsty again ¹⁴ but whoever is drinking from the water that I will be giving him may never be thirsty, but the water that I will be giving him will become in him a well of water leaping up to everlasting life.
¹⁵ The woman says to him, Lord, give this water to me, in order that I may not be thirsty, nor come here to dip-out water.

³⁷ Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and let him drink. ³⁸ He who believes in me, like the Scripture has said, Rivers of living water will be flowing out of his belly. ³⁹ But he spoke this concerning the Spirit, which those who believed in him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

⁵ In the manner of life, not being a money-lover, be content with the things which are present; for he himself has said, I may never be lax concerning you, nor should I ever forsake you. ⁶ So-that we, being courageous, may say, The Lord is my helper and I will not be fearing. What will man be doing for me?

⁶ And he said to me, I have become the Alpha and the Omega, I am the beginning and the end. I will be giving freely to the one who is thirsty out of the spring of the water of life.

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride are saying, Come. And he who hears, let him say, Come. And he who is thirsty, let him come. He who wills, let him take the water of life freely.

⁴ There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High.

¹⁵ He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them to drink abundantly as out of the depths.
¹⁶ He brought streams also out of the rock and caused waters to run down like rivers.

⁴¹ He opened the rock and waters gushed out. They ran in the dry places like a river.

³⁵ He turns a wilderness into a pool of water and a dry land into water springs.

³ Therefore with joy you* will draw water out of the wells of salvation.

²⁵ And there will be upon every lofty mountain and upon every high hill, brooks and streams of waters, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.

² And a man will be as a hiding-place from the wind and a covert from the tempest, as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

⁶ Then the lame man will leap as a male-deer and the tongue of the mute will sing. For waters in the wilderness will break out and streams in the desert. ⁷ And the glowing sand will become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water. In the habitation of jackals, where they lay, will be grass with reeds and rushes.

¹⁹ Behold, I will do a new thing. Now it will spring forth. Shall you* not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
²⁰ The beasts of the field will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches, because I give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen,

²¹ And they did not thirst when he led them through the deserts. He caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them. He also split the rock and the waters gushed out.

⁹ saying to those who are bound, Go forth; to those who are in darkness, Show yourselves. They will feed in the ways and their pasture will be on all bare heights.
¹⁰ They will not hunger nor thirst, neither will the heat nor sun kill* them. For he who has mercy on them will lead them. He will guide them even by springs of water.

¹¹ And Jehovah will guide you continually and satisfy your soul in dry places and make strong your bones. And you will be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not.

¹ And he brought me back to the door of the house. And behold, waters went forth out from under the threshold of the house eastward, for the forefront of the house was toward the east. And the waters came down from under, from the right side of the house, on the south of the altar.
² Then he brought me out by the way of the gate northward and led me round by the way outside to the outer gate, by the way of the gate that looks toward the east. And behold, waters ran out on the right side.
³ When the man went forth eastward with the line in his hand, he measured a thousand cubits and he caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the ankles. ⁴ Again he measured a thousand and caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand and caused me to pass through the waters, waters that were to the loins. ⁵ Afterward he measured a thousand and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the waters have risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. ⁶ And he said to me, Son of man, have you seen this? Then he brought me and caused me to return to the bank of the river.
⁷ Now when I had returned, behold, upon the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. ⁸ Then he said to me, These waters go forth toward the eastern region and will go down into the Arabah. And they will go toward the sea, into the sea which were made to go forth and the waters will be healed.

¹⁸ And it will happen in that day, that the mountains will drop down sweet wine and the hills will flow with milk and all the brooks of Judah will flow with waters. And a fountain will come out from the house of Jehovah and will water the valley of Shittim.

⁸ And it will happen in that day, that living waters will go out from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea. In summer and in winter it will be.

¹⁷ because the Lamb, who is in the midst of the throne, is shepherding them and is guiding them to the springs of waters of life and God will be wiping-away every tear from their eyes.

¹ And he showed me a river of the clean water of life, bright like crystal, traveling out from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

¹³ Men who are planted in the house of Jehovah will flourish in the courts of our God.
¹⁴ They will still bring forth fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green

⁶ In days to come Jacob will take root; Israel will blossom and bud. And they will fill the face of the world with fruit.

¹⁵ until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field and the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest.

¹ The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. And the desert will rejoice and blossom as the rose.

³¹ And the remnant that has escaped from the house of Judah will again take root downward and bear fruit upward. ³² For out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant and out of Mount Zion those who will escape. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

³ For Jehovah has comforted Zion. He has comforted all her waste places and has made her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of Jehovah. Joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.

¹³ Instead of the thorn will come up the fir tree and instead of the brier will come up the myrtle tree. And it will be to Jehovah for a name, for an everlasting sign that will not be cut off.

¹³ The glory of Lebanon will come to you, the fir tree, the pine and the box tree together, to beautify the place of my sanctuary. And I will make the place of my feet glorious.

²¹ Your people also will all be righteous. They will inherit the land everlasting, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

³ to appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Jehovah, that he may be glorified.

¹¹ For as the earth brings forth its bud and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the lord Jehovah will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

²² The lord Jehovah says thus: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar and will set it. I will crop off a tender one from the topmost of its offshoots and I will plant it upon a high and lofty mountain. ²³ I will plant it in the mountain of the height of Israel and it will bring forth branches and bear fruit and be a majestic cedar. And all birds of every wing will dwell under it; they will dwell in the shade of the branches of it.
²⁴ And all the trees of the field will know that I, Jehovah, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree and have made the dry tree to flourish. I, Jehovah, have spoken and have done it.

¹² And every tree will grow for food by the river upon the bank of it, on this side and on that side, whose leaf will not wither, nor will the fruit of it fail. It will bring forth new fruit every month, because the waters of it goes forth out of the sanctuary. And the fruit of it will be for food and the leaf of it for healing.

¹⁶ But indeed for this cause I have raised you up, to display in you my power and that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.

²³ Surely there is no enchantment with Jacob, neither is there any divination with Israel. Now it will be said of Jacob and of Israel, What has God worked!

⁹ Who does not know in all these, that the hand of Jehovah has worked this,

²⁷ that they may know that this is your hand, that you, Jehovah, have done it.

⁷ everyone who is called by my name and whom I have created for my glory, whom I have formed, yes, whom I have made. ⁸ Bring forth the blind people who have eyes and the deaf who have ears.
⁹ Let all the nations be gathered together and let the peoples be assembled. Who among them can declare this and show us former things? Let them bring their witnesses that they may be justified, or let them hear and say, It is truth.
¹⁰ You* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and my servant whom I have chosen, that you* may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, nor will there be after me.
¹¹ I, even I, am Jehovah and besides me there is no savior. ¹² I have declared and I have saved and I have shown and there was no strange god among you*. Therefore you* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and I am God. ¹³ Yes, since the day was I am he and there is none that can deliver out of my hand. I will work and who can hinder it?

²¹ the people whom I formed for myself, that they might set forth my praise.

²³ Sing, O you* heavens, for Jehovah has done it. Shout, you* lower parts of the earth. Break forth into singing, you* mountains, O forest and every tree in it. For Jehovah has redeemed Jacob and will glorify himself in Israel.

⁶ that they may know from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me. I am Jehovah and there is none else.
⁷ I form the light and create darkness. I make peace and create evil. I am Jehovah who does all these things.
⁸ Drop down, you* heavens, from above and let the skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open that it may bring forth salvation and let it cause righteousness to spring up together. I, Jehovah, have created it.

¹⁸ For I know their works and their thoughts.
The time comes, that I will gather all nations and languages and they will come and will see my glory.

⁶ And God raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus; ⁷ in order that in the coming ages, he might show the surpassing riches of his grace in kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. ⁸ For you are saved by the grace through the faith, and this thing, the gift of God, is not from you; ⁹ not from works, in order that not anyone should boast. ¹⁰ For we are his product, created in Christ Jesus toward good works, in which God prepared beforehand in order that we should walk in them.

¹⁰ whenever he may come to be glorified in his holy-ones, and to be marveled at in that day in all those who have believed, (because our testimony to you was believed).

³ O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat!
⁴ I would set my case in order before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him as a prince.

⁷ Gird up your loins now like a man. I will demand of you and declare you to me. ⁸ Will you even annul my judgment? Will you condemn me, that you may be justified?
⁹ Or have you an arm like God? And can you thunder with a voice like him?

¹ Hear now what Jehovah says: Arise, contend before the mountains and let the hills hear your voice. ² Hear, O you* mountains, Jehovah's controversy and you* enduring foundations of the earth, for Jehovah has a controversy with his people and he will contend with Israel.

⁹ Behold, the former things have happen and I declare new things. Before they spring forth I tell you* of them.

⁹ Let all the nations be gathered together and let the peoples be assembled. Who among them can declare this and show us former things? Let them bring their witnesses that they may be justified, or let them hear and say, It is truth.
¹⁰ You* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and my servant whom I have chosen, that you* may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, nor will there be after me.
¹¹ I, even I, am Jehovah and besides me there is no savior. ¹² I have declared and I have saved and I have shown and there was no strange god among you*. Therefore you* are my witnesses, says Jehovah and I am God.

⁷ And who, as I, will call and will declare it and set it in order for me, since I established the people of old? And let them declare the things that are coming and that will happen.

²¹ Declare and bring it forth. Yes, let them take counsel together. Who has shown this from long-ago? Who has declared it long since? Have not I, Jehovah? And there is no other God besides me, a just God and a Savior. There is none besides me.

¹⁴ Assemble yourselves, all you* and hear: Who among them has declared these things? He whom Jehovah loves will perform his pleasure on Babylon and his arm, the Chaldeans.

¹⁹ From now on I tell you before it is to happen, in order that, whenever it has happened, you may believe that I am he. \ulnone\nosupersub

¹⁴ He will be glorifying me, because he will receive from me and will be proclaiming it to you.

⁷ And who, as I, will call and will declare it and set it in order for me, since I established the people of old? And let them declare the things that are coming and that will happen. ⁸ Do not fear, nor be afraid. Have I not declared to you of old and shown it? And you* are my witnesses. Is there a God besides me? Yes, there is no Rock. I do not know any.

³ And I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that it is I, Jehovah, who call you by your name, even the God of Israel.

⁷ They bear it upon the shoulder. They carry it and set it in its place and it stands. From its place it will not remove. Yes, he may cry to it, yet it cannot answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

⁹ Remember the former things of old, for I am God and there is none else. I am God and there is none like me, ¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning and from long-ago things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel will stand and I will do all my pleasure,

⁵ They are like a palm tree, of turned work and do not speak. They must be carried, because they cannot go. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor is it in them to do good.

²⁶ And you will not bring an abomination into your house and become a devoted thing like it. You will make it an abomination and you will utterly abhor it, for it is a cursed thing.

¹⁵ Cursed be the man who makes a graven or molten image, an abomination to Jehovah, the work of the hands of the craftsman and sets it up in secret. And all the people will answer and say, Truly.

⁸ Those who make them will be like them. Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

¹⁹ and have cast their gods into the fire. For they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.

⁹ Those who fashion a graven image are all of them vanity. And the things that they delight in will not profit. And their own witnesses do not see, nor know, that they may be put to shame. ¹⁰ Who has fashioned a god, or molded an image that is profitable for nothing?

²⁴ And they will go forth and look upon the dead bodies of the men who have transgressed against me. For their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched and they will be an abhorring to all flesh.

⁸ But they are together stupid and foolish, the instruction of idols! It is but a block of wood.

¹⁴ Every man has become stupid, without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image. For his molten image is falsehood and there is no breath in them.

⁴ Therefore concerning the food of idol-sacrifices, we know that an idol in the world is nothing and that there is no other God except one.

⁵ and a name has been written upon her forehead, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of the Prostitutes and of the Abominations of the Earth.

² Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth has Jehovah, the God of heaven, given me and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

²⁸ who says of Cyrus, He is my shepherd and will perform all my pleasure, even saying of Jerusalem, She will be built and of the temple, Your foundation will be laid.

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning and from long-ago things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel will stand and I will do all my pleasure, ¹¹ calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. Yes, I have spoken. I will also make it occur. I have purposed. I will also do it.

³ For out of the north there comes up a nation against her, which will make her land desolate and none will dwell in it. They are fled. They are gone, both man and beast.

²⁷ Set up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come up as the rough canker-worm. ²⁸ Prepare against her the nations, the kings of the Medes, the governors of it and all the deputies of it and all the land of their dominion.
²⁹ And the land trembles and is in pain, for the purposes of Jehovah against Babylon stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant.
The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting; they remain in their strongholds. Their might has failed. They have become as women.

¹⁰ Then my enemy will see it and shame will cover her who said to me, Where is Jehovah your God? My eyes will see my desire upon her. Now she will be trodden down as the mud of the streets.

⁵ And they will be as mighty men, treading down their enemies in the mud of the streets in the battle. And they will fight, because Jehovah is with them and the riders on horses will be confounded.

²² Let them bring forth and declare to us what will happen. Declare the former things, what they are, that we may consider them and know the latter end of them, or show us things to come.

⁹ Let all the nations be gathered together and let the peoples be assembled. Who among them can declare this and show us former things? Let them bring their witnesses that they may be justified, or let them hear and say, It is truth.

¹⁸ What profits the graven image, that the maker of it has engraved it, the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make dumb idols?
¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake! To the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
²⁰ But Jehovah is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before him.

¹ Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and put it also in writing, saying, ² Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth has Jehovah, the God of heaven, given me and he has charged me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

⁹ O you who tell good news to Zion, get up on a high mountain. O you who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength. Lift it up, do not be afraid, say to the cities of Judah, Behold, your* God!

⁴ Who has worked and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, Jehovah, the first and with the last, I am he.

²⁸ who says of Cyrus, He is my shepherd and will perform all my pleasure, even saying of Jerusalem, She will be built and of the temple, Your foundation will be laid.

³ I have declared the former things from of old. Yes, they went forth out of my mouth and I showed them. Suddenly I did them and they happened.

¹⁵ Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah. Perform your vows, for the wicked one will no more pass through you. He is utterly cut off.

¹⁵ But how will they preach, if they are not sent? Just-as it has been written, ‘How Beautiful are the feet of those who are proclaiming the good-news of peace and of those who are proclaiming the good-news of good things!’

¹³ Who has known the mind of Jehovah, or being his counselor has taught him? ¹⁴ He took counsel with whom. And who instructed him and taught him in the path of justice. And taught him knowledge and showed to him the way of understanding?

² Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea. I make the rivers a wilderness. Their fish stink because there is no water and die for thirst.

¹⁶ And he saw that there was no man and wondered that there was no intercessor. Therefore his own arm brought salvation to him. And his righteousness, it upheld him.

⁵ And I looked and there was none to help. And I wondered that there was none to uphold. Therefore my own arm brought salvation to me. And my wrath, it upheld me.

¹⁰ The Chaldeans answered before the king and said, There is not a man upon the earth who can show the king's matter. Inasmuch as no king, lord, or ruler, has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean. ¹¹ And it is a rare thing that the king requires and there is no other who can show it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.

⁷ Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans and the soothsayers came in and I told the dream before them, but they did not make the interpretation of it known to me.
⁸ But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods. And I told the dream before him, saying,

⁸ Then all the king's wise men came in, but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation.

⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. ⁵ They have mouths, but they do not speak. They have eyes, but they do not see. ⁶ They have ears, but they do not hear. They have noses, but they do not smell. ⁷ They have hands, but they do not handle. They have feet, but they do not walk, nor do they speak through their throat.
⁸ Those who make them will be like them. Yes, everyone who trusts in them.

⁹ Those who fashion a graven image are all of them vanity. And the things that they delight in will not profit. And their own witnesses do not see, nor know, that they may be put to shame. ¹⁰ Who has fashioned a god, or molded an image that is profitable for nothing? ¹¹ Behold, all his fellows will be put to shame and the workmen. They are of men. Let them all be gathered together. Let them stand up. They will fear. They will be put to shame together.
¹² The smith makes an axe and works in the coals and fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. Yes, he is hungry and his strength fails. He drinks no water and is faint.
¹³ The carpenter stretches out a line. He marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes. And he marks it out with the compasses and shapes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. ¹⁴ He hews down cedars for him and takes the cypress tree and the oak and strengthens for himself one among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir tree and the rain nourishes it.
¹⁵ Then it will be for a man to burn. And he takes of it and warms himself. Yes, he kindles it and bakes bread. Yes, he makes a god and worships it. He makes it a graven image and falls down to it. ¹⁶ He burns part of it in the fire. He eats flesh with part of it. He roasts roast and is satisfied. Yes, he warms himself and says, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire. ¹⁷ And the residue of it he makes a god, even his graven image. He falls down to it and worships and prays to it and says, Deliver me, for you are my god.
¹⁸ They do not know, nor do they consider. For he has shut their eyes, that they cannot see and their hearts, that they cannot understand. ¹⁹ And none calls to mind, nor is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire. Yes, I have also baked bread upon the coals of it. I have roasted flesh and eaten it. And shall I make the residue of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
²⁰ He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

¹³ And the prophets will become wind and the word is not in them. Thus will it be done to them.

² Jehovah says thus: Learn not the way of the nations and do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the nations are dismayed at them. ³ For the customs of the peoples are vanity.
For a man cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe. ⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it not move. ⁵ They are like a palm tree, of turned work and do not speak. They must be carried, because they cannot go. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor is it in them to do good.
⁶ There is none like you, O Jehovah. You are great and your name is great in might. ⁷ Who should not fear you, O King of the nations? For to you it is befitting, inasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations and in all their royal estate, there is none like you.
⁸ But they are together stupid and foolish, the instruction of idols! It is but a block of wood. ⁹ There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz, the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith, blue and purple for their clothing. They are all the work of skillful men.
¹⁰ But Jehovah is the true God. He is the living God and an everlasting King. At his wrath the earth trembles and the nations are not able to abide his indignation. ¹¹ Thus you* will say to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.
¹² He has made the earth by his power. He has established the world by his wisdom and by his understanding he has stretched out the heavens. ¹³ When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind out of his treasuries.
¹⁴ Every man has become stupid, without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image. For his molten image is falsehood and there is no breath in them. ¹⁵ They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they will perish.
¹⁶ The portion of Jacob is not like these. For he is the former of all things and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. Jehovah of hosts is his name.
