⁴⁷ And He taught in the temple daily. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy Him.

²³ And when He had come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him as He was teaching, and said, By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?

³ Then the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, assembled together to the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas. ⁴ And they consulted so that they might take Jesus by guile and kill Him.

⁵⁵ In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out in order to take Me with swords and clubs, as against a thief? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not lay hands on Me.

¹⁸ And the scribes and the chief priests heard. And they sought how they might destroy Him. For they feared Him, because all the people were astonished at His doctrine.

²⁷ And they came again to Jerusalem. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him ²⁸ and said to Him, By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority to do these things? ²⁹ And Jesus answered and said to them, I will also ask of you one thing, and answer Me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. ³⁰ The baptism of John, was it from Heaven, or from men? Answer Me. ³¹ And they reasoned within themselves, saying, If we shall say, From Heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him? ³² But if we shall say, From men, they feared the people, for all held John to be a prophet indeed. ³³ And they answered and said to Jesus, We cannot tell. And answering Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¹² And they sought to seize him, but feared the crowd. For they knew that He spoke the parable against them. And leaving Him, they went away.

¹ And after two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by craft and kill Him.

³⁷ And in the days He was teaching in the temple. And in the nights He went out, and lodged in the mount called the Mount of Olives. ³⁸ And all the people came early in the morning to Him in the temple, in order to hear Him.

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law! Why do you seek to kill Me?

⁴⁴ And some of them desired to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

³⁷ I know that you are Abraham's seed, but you seek to kill Me because My Word has no place in you. ³⁸ I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you, then, do what you have seen with your father. ³⁹ They answered and said to Him, Abraham is our father. Jesus answered them, If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. ⁴⁰ But now you seek to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth which I have heard beside God; this Abraham did not do.

³⁹ Then they again sought to seize Him, but He went forth out of their hand.

⁵³ Then from that day they took counsel together that they might kill Him. ⁵⁴ Therefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but He went away from there to a country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and continued there with His disciples. ⁵⁵ And the Jews' Passover was near. And many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover in order to purify themselves. ⁵⁶ Then they sought Jesus, and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, What does it seem to you, that He will not at all come to the feast? ⁵⁷ And all the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commands, that if anyone knew where He was, he should make it known so that they might seize Him.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews always resort, and I have said nothing in secret.
