⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man.

⁴ He becomes poor who has a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ A slothful man hides his hand in his dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ As the door turns upon its hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ The slothful hides his hand in his dish; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that can answer reasonably.

³ They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: ⁴ But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go out to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go you rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not spread: ²⁵ And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the earth: lo, there you have what is yours. ²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not spread: ²⁷ You ought therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received my own with interest. ²⁸ Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him who has ten talents.

⁵ And for this reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; ⁶ And to knowledge self control; and to self control patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness love. ⁸ For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ But he that lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. ¹⁰ Therefore rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if you do these things, you shall never fall: ¹¹ For so an entrance shall be provided unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
