¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turns it wherever he will. ² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts. ³ To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. ⁴ A haughty look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin. ⁵ The thoughts of the diligent lead only to plenty; but of everyone that is hasty, only to want. ⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. ⁷ The violence of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do justice. ⁸ The way of man is perverse and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right. ⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a whole house. ¹⁰ The soul of the wicked desires evil: his neighbor finds no favor in his eyes. ¹¹ When the scoffer is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receives knowledge. ¹² The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked: but God overthrows the wicked for their wickedness. ¹³ Whosoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard. ¹⁴ A gift in secret averts anger: and a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath. ¹⁵ It is joy to the just to do justice: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity. ¹⁶ The man that wanders out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. ¹⁷ He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich. ¹⁸ The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright. ¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman. ²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up. ²¹ He that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor. ²² A wise man scales the city of the mighty, and casts down the stronghold in which they trust. ²³ Whosoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. ²⁴ Proud and haughty scoffer is his name, who deals in arrogant pride. ²⁵ The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labor. ²⁶ He covets greedily all the day long: but the righteous gives and spares not. ²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind? ²⁸ A false witness shall perish: but the man that hears speaks constantly. ²⁹ A wicked man hardens his face: but as for the upright, he considers his way. ³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. ³¹ The horse is prepared for the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

²² And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem: ²⁸ And has extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel leading men to go up with me.

¹¹ O Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name: and prosper, I pray you, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

⁴ Then the king said unto me, For what do you make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

¹⁵ You did break open the fountain and the flood: you dried up mighty rivers.

⁴ The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.

⁴⁶ He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

³ The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back.

⁵ What ailed you, O you sea, that you fled? you Jordan, that you were driven back?

¹ The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

⁹ A man's heart plans his way: but the LORD directs his steps.

²⁴ A man’s steps are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

¹⁹ Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

²⁷ That says to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up your rivers:

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can restrain his hand, or say unto him, What do you?

¹⁰ And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

⁴ And the third angel poured out his bowl upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

¹² And the sixth angel poured out his bowl upon the great river Euphrates; and its water was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the spirits.

²⁵ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

⁶ Most men will proclaim everyone his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

¹² If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not he that weighs the heart consider it? and he that keeps your soul, does not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

²⁴ But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, ²⁵ And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

²² But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

²² And Samuel said, has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

⁸ I will not reprove you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? says the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of male goats. ¹² When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot endure; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary of bearing them. ¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash you, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ Learn to do good; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

²¹ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Add your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. ²² For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: ²³ But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people: and walk you in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

⁶ For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

⁶ With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? ⁷ Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? ⁸ He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

³³ And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

⁴ The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in any of his thoughts.

¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind?

¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁷ And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD says, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and tripping as they go, and making a jingling with their feet:

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

²³ And he that doubts is condemned if he eats, because he eats not of faith: for whatever is not of faith is sin.

⁵ Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

⁴ He becomes poor who has a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

²⁹ He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.

²¹ An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

²³ Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds. ²⁴ For riches are not forever: and does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The hay appears, and the tender grass shows itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. ²⁶ The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field. ²⁷ And you shall have goats' milk enough for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance for your maidservants.

²² He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye, and considers not that poverty shall come upon him.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.

¹¹ And that you study to be quiet, and to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; ¹² That you may walk honestly toward them that are outside, and that you may have lack of nothing.

³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

² Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivers from death.

¹¹ Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathers by labor shall increase.

¹⁴ It is nothing, it is nothing, says the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.

⁸ He that sows iniquity shall reap trouble: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food needful for me:

¹¹ As the partridge sits on eggs, and hatches them not; so he that gets riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel?

⁹ But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who ruin whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

³ And through covetousness shall they with false words exploit you: whose judgment of old now lingers not, and their destruction slumbers not.

¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown.

¹⁶ The LORD is known by the judgment which he executes: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁸ And they lie in wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

²¹ He that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

²³ Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come before them. ²⁴ Therefore says the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will rid myself of my adversaries, and avenge myself of my enemies:

⁹ Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom you know not; ¹⁰ And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? ¹¹ Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, says the LORD.

¹⁵ And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole descendants of Ephraim.

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

¹³ Behold, therefore I have struck my hands together at your dishonest gain which you have made, and at your blood which has been in the midst of you. ¹⁴ Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with you? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.

⁹ Hear this, I pray you, you heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, that abhor justice, and pervert all equity. ¹⁰ They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. ¹¹ Her heads judge for reward, and her priests teach for hire, and her prophets divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? no evil can come upon us. ¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house like the high places of the forest.

³ Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that steals shall be cut off according to the writing on this side; and every one that swears falsely shall be cut off according to the writing on that side. ⁴ I will bring it forth, says the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with its timber and its stones.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ⁶ And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

¹² And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, who drinks iniquity like water?

² The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. ³ They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that does good, no, not one.

¹⁵ Whose ways are crooked, and who are perverse in their paths:

²⁶ The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

²⁹ Lo, this only have I found, that God has made man upright; but they have sought out many devices.

³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

¹⁰ Many shall be purified, and made white, and refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

³³ Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit.

⁹ And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

³ For you are yet carnal: for while there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are you not carnal, and walk as men?

² In which in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience: ³ Among whom also we all had our behavior in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

¹⁵ Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.

¹⁴ Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own, zealous of good works.

³ For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

⁵ Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit;

²² Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto sincere love of the brethren, see that you love one another with a pure heart fervently: ²³ Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides forever.

²⁹ If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone that does righteousness is born of him.

³ And every man that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that makes ashamed is like rottenness in his bones.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted ox with hatred.

¹ Better is a dry morsel, with quietness, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman.

²⁴ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a whole house.

¹⁵ A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whosoever restrains her restrains the wind, or grasps oil with his right hand.

⁸ Ask your young men, and they will show you. Therefore let the young men find favor in your eyes: for we come on a feast day: give, I pray you, whatsoever comes to your hand unto your servants, and to your son David. ⁹ And when David's young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. ¹⁰ And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there are many servants now days that break away each man from his master. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not from where they be?

⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

⁵ A good man shows favor, and lends: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

⁹ He has dispersed, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his strength shall be exalted with honor.

²⁹ Devise not evil against your neighbor, seeing he dwells securely by you.

¹² The wicked desires the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yields fruit.

¹³ Whosoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

⁶ For the foolish person will speak foolishness, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ The schemes also of the schemer are evil: he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks justly. ⁸ But the noble plans noble things; and by noble things shall he stand.

² Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹³ For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment.

¹ From where come wars and fightings among you? come they not from here, even of your lusts that war in your members? ² You lust, and have not: you kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: you fight and war, yet you have not, because you ask not. ³ You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it upon your lusts. ⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. ⁵ Do you think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy?

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies: so shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

⁷ But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. ⁸ So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away. ⁹ And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider his doings.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

¹ A man, having separated himself, seeks his own desire, and rages against all sound wisdom.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

²⁵ Smite a scoffer, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and died: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

¹¹ And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. ¹² And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders done among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. ¹³ And of the rest dared no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them. ¹⁴ And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be you idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. ⁹ Neither let us test Christ, as some of them also tested him, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ Neither murmur you, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer. ¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. ² For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; ³ How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

²⁸ He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much worse punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done insult unto the Spirit of grace?

¹³ And the same hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the rest were frightened, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

²⁹ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.

¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ They shall dwell in his tent, who are none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ They that come after him shall be astounded at his day, as they that went before were frightened. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knows not God.

²⁸ For you say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked? ²⁹ Have you not asked them that go by the way? and do you not know their evidences, ³⁰ That the wicked are reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and pile up clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house like a moth, and like a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he opens his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he is gone: and as a storm hurls him out of his place. ²² For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would scarcely flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

³ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. ⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivers from death. ⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

⁶ Righteousness keeps him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tent of the upright shall flourish.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.

⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall stumble in them.

¹¹ I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have you not returned unto me, says the LORD.

⁹ Woe to him that covets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of ruin! ¹⁰ You have plotted shame to your house by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam from the timber shall answer it. ¹² Woe to him that builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity!

⁵ But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ And spared not the ancient world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; ⁶ And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them by a catastrophe, making them an example unto those that later should live ungodly; ⁷ And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy behavior of the wicked: ⁸ (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) ⁹ The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

⁶ By which the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷ But the heavens and the earth, which now are, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

⁷ If there be among you a poor man of one of your brethren within any of your gates in your land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother: ⁸ But you shall open your hand wide unto him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he lacks. ⁹ Beware that there be not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing; and he cries unto the LORD against you, and it be sin in you. ¹⁰ You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give unto him: because for this thing the LORD your God shall bless you in all your works, and in all that you put your hand unto. ¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command you, saying, you shall open your hand wide unto your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land.

¹ And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. ² For there were those that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore let us get grain for them, that we may eat, and live. ³ Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy grain, because of the famine. ⁴ There were also those that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tax, and that upon our lands and vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

¹³ Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labor, that performs not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: they are like the deaf adder that stops its ear;

²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

²⁷ He that gives unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your health shall spring forth speedily: and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. ⁹ Then shall you call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness;

¹⁶ But you turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had set at liberty, at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus says the LORD; You have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, says the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ Thus speaks the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother: ¹⁰ And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. ¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and shrugged the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as a flint stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts has sent by his Spirit through the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. ¹³ Therefore it has come to pass, that just as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, says the LORD of hosts:

¹⁴ For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

² For with what judgment you judge, you shall be judged: and with what measure you measure, it shall be measured to you again.

³⁰ And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. ³¹ So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. ³² Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you desired me: ³³ Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you? ³⁴ And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all that was due unto him. ³⁵ So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if you from your hearts forgive not everyone his brother their trespasses.

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² For I was hungry, and you gave me no food: I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger, and you took me not in: naked, and you clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and you visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we you hungry, or thirsty or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto you? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Since you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

²⁵ When once the Master of the house is risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know not where you come from:

⁵⁷ Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

¹³ For he shall have judgment without mercy, that has showed no mercy; and mercy triumphs over judgment. ¹⁴ What does it profit, my brethren, though a man says he has faith, and has not works? can faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, ¹⁶ And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; yet you give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?

²⁰ And say moreover, Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to your house; see, I have hearkened to your voice, and have accepted your person.

⁸ A bribe is as a magic stone in the eyes of him that gives it: wherever he turns, he prospers.

²³ A wicked man takes a bribe out of the bosom to pervert the ways of justice.

¹⁶ A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.

⁶ Many will entreat the favor of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that gives gifts.

³ But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does: ⁴ That your alms may be in secret: and your Father who sees in secret himself shall reward you openly.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

⁸ I delight to do your will, O my God: yea, your law is within my heart.

¹ Praise you the LORD. Blessed is the man that fears the LORD, that delights greatly in his commandments.

¹⁶ I will delight myself in your statutes: I will not forget your word.

⁹² Unless your law had been my delights, I should then have perished in my affliction.

²⁰ And why will you, my son, be infatuated with an immoral woman, and embrace the bosom of a seductress?

²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

¹² The righteous man wisely considers the house of the wicked: but God overthrows the wicked for their wickedness.

¹² I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

⁵ You meet him that rejoices and works righteousness, those that remember you in your ways: behold, you are angry; for we have sinned: in those ways is continuance, and we shall be saved.

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; ⁴² And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

²⁷ But he shall say, I tell you, I know not where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity. ²⁸ There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

³⁴ Jesus said unto them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

²² For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

¹⁸ For her house leads unto death, and her paths unto the dead. ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

²⁶ For she has cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he knows not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of the grave.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

⁶ And those that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired for him.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

¹ And you has he made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins:

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

²⁶ For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ But a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁸ Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

²¹ For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog has turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

¹² These are spots in your love feasts, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labors go to the house of a foreigner; ¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

¹³ And not many days later the younger son gathered everything together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent everything, there arose a great famine in that land; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. ¹⁶ And he would gladly have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

⁶ But she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

⁴ Traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked comes in his stead.

³ For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior: I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. ⁴ Since you were precious in my sight, you have been honorable, and I have loved you: therefore will I give men for you, and people for your life.

⁴ Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

¹⁸ For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive by the Spirit:

⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest. ⁷ Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.

⁵ Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! ⁶ My soul has long dwelt with him that hates peace.

⁹ It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a whole house.

² Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place for wayfaring men; that I might leave my people and go from them! For they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: from the proceeds of business he shall not rejoice.

⁵ You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

³ Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endures forever.

²² The blessing of the LORD, it makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

⁶ In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the income of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁹ Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to accept his lot, and to rejoice in his labor; this is the gift of God.

¹¹ Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.

¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes merry: but money answers all things.

⁸ But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he refrained, and killed them not with their brethren.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

³ They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: ⁴ But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

¹⁴ And when he had spent everything, there arose a great famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

¹ And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day: ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; ²³ And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and seeing Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loves him that follows after righteousness.

⁴ By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.

¹ Hearken to me, you that follow after righteousness, you that seek the LORD: look unto the rock from where you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.

³ Let us know, let us press on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

⁶ Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

⁷ To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life: ⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek; ¹⁰ But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek:

¹⁹ Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things with which one may edify another.

⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, since you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

¹² Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if indeed I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

²¹ Test all things; hold fast that which is good.

¹¹ But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

²² Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁷ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: ⁸ Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

¹⁴ Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁷ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: who spoke unto David, saying, Except you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in here: thinking, David cannot come in here. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion: the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever gets up the water shaft, and strikes the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Therefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house. ⁹ So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built all around from Millo inward.

¹⁶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near here, that I may speak with you. ¹⁷ And when he was come near unto her, the woman said, Are you Joab? And he answered, I am he. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of your handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. ¹⁸ Then she spoke, saying, They used to speak in former time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel: and so they ended the matter. ¹⁹ I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: you seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why will you swallow up the inheritance of the LORD? ²⁰ And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ²¹ The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall. ²² Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to Joab. And he blew a trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

⁵ A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increases strength.

¹⁹ Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

¹³ This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: ¹⁴ There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: ¹⁵ Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there lacks not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

¹³ The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall escape from trouble.

³ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

²⁷ He that has knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

²⁶ If any man among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. ³ Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. ⁴ Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. ⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹ With this bless we God, even the Father; and with this curse we men, who are made after the similitude of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. ¹¹ Does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? ¹² Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. ¹³ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good life his works with meekness of wisdom.

⁵ And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor paid him homage, then was Haman full of wrath. ⁶ And he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had made known to him the people of Mordecai: therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

¹ Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scoffers and stripes for the back of fools.

⁸ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. ⁹ Be not hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

⁶ We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.

²⁹ We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceedingly proud) his loftiness, and his arrogance, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the region thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provides her food in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man.

²⁴ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be put to forced labor.

²⁷ The slothful man roasts not that which he took in hunting: but the possessions of a diligent man are precious.

¹⁹ The way of the slothful man is as a hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made a highway.

²⁴ A slothful man hides his hand in his dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and weeds had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that can answer reasonably.

²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not spread:

²⁶ He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed.

⁴² Give to him that asks you, and from him that would borrow of you turn not away.

³⁰ Give to every man that asks of you; and of him that takes away your goods ask them not again. ³¹ And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them likewise. ³² For if you love them who love you, what thanks have you? for sinners also love those that love them. ³³ And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks have you? for sinners also do even the same. ³⁴ And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks have you? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. ³⁶ Be you therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

³³ I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel. ³⁴ Yea, you yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. ³⁵ I have showed you all things, how that so laboring you ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

⁷ Therefore, as you abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that you abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not by commandment, but to prove by the earnestness of others, the sincerity of your love. ⁹ For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich.

⁹ (As it is written, He has dispersed abroad; he has given to the poor: his righteousness remains forever. ¹⁰ Now he that ministers seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;) ¹¹ Being enriched in everything to all bountifulness, who causes through us thanksgiving to God. ¹² For the administration of this service not only supplies the need of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God; ¹³ While by the proof of this ministry they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men; ¹⁴ And by their prayer for you, who long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.

⁵ For neither at any time used we flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness: ⁶ Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. ⁷ But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherishes her children: ⁸ So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because you were dear unto us. ⁹ For you remember, brethren, our labor and travail: for laboring night and day, because we would not be a burden unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

¹² Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I felt compelled therefore, and offered a burnt offering. ¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly: you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you: for now would the LORD have established your kingdom upon Israel forever.

²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD your God in Gilgal. ²² And Samuel said, has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.

⁸ I will not reprove you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. ⁹ I will take no bullock out of your house, nor male goats out of your folds. ¹⁰ For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. ¹¹ I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. ¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell you: for the world is mine, and the fullness thereof. ¹³ Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

⁹ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? says the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of male goats. ¹² When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot endure; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary of bearing them. ¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash you, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;

³ He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he breaks a dog's neck; he that offers a grain offering, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

²⁰ To what purpose comes there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.

¹¹ Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, says the LORD. ¹² But go you now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

²¹ I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not take delight in your solemn assemblies. ²² Though you offer me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fatted beasts.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you neither go in yourselves, neither allow you them that are entering to go in.

¹ You shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

¹⁶ If a false witness rises up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; ¹⁷ Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, who shall be in those days; ¹⁸ And the judges shall make diligent inquiry: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ Then shall you do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shall you put the evil away from among you.

¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established forever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

¹⁸ A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a club, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

¹⁵ And they said unto her, You are mad. But she continued to affirm that it was so. Then they said, It is his angel.

¹⁷ When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay? ¹⁸ But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay. ¹⁹ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silas and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. ²⁰ For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

¹³ We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

⁸ This is a faithful saying, and these things I desire that you affirm constantly, that they who have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

⁵ O that my ways were directed to keep your statutes!

⁵⁹ I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto your testimonies.

⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that is reverent always: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into calamity.

¹ He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

² Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your harlotries and with your wickedness. ³ Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; and you had a harlot’s forehead, you refused to be ashamed.

³ O LORD, are not your eyes upon the truth? you have stricken them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹² Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their punishment they shall be cast down, says the LORD.

¹⁶ As for the word that you have spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto you. ¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of food, and were well-off, and saw no evil.

²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

¹⁵ And now, I pray you, consider from this day onward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

¹⁸ Consider now from this day and onward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it. ¹⁹ Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, have not brought forth: but from this day will I bless you.

¹⁷ And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! ¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you,

¹¹ Now God himself even our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

²¹ There are many plans in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

⁵ Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against you, saying, ⁶ Let us go up against Judah, and trouble it, and let us make a break in its wall for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: ⁷ Thus says the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

⁹ Be shattered, O you people, you shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all you from far countries: gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

²⁷ For the LORD of hosts has purposed, and who shall annul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

¹⁰ Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: ¹¹ Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executes my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

²³ Thus says the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea raged, and was tempestuous against them.

²⁷ For of a truth against your holy child Jesus, whom you have anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, ²⁸ To do whatsoever your hand and your counsel determined before to be done.

³⁹ But if it be of God, you cannot overthrow it; lest perhaps you be found even to fight against God.

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness. ²⁰ And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

⁸ And, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them who stumble at the word, being disobedient: to which also they were appointed.

³ But you, O LORD, are a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

⁸ Salvation belongs unto the LORD: your blessing is upon your people. Selah.

⁷ Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

¹⁷ A horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength. ¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

²⁰ He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the escape from death.

¹⁰ It is he that gives salvation unto kings: who delivers David his servant from the hurtful sword.

¹⁰ He delights not in the strength of the horse: he takes not pleasure in the legs of a man.

¹¹ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happens to them all.

¹ Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and rely on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

²³ Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
