¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; and whosoever erreth thereby is not wise. ² The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life. ³ It is an honour for a man to keep aloof from strife: but every fool will be quarrelling. ⁴ The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing. ⁵ Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. ⁶ Most men wilt proclaim every one his own kindness: but a faithful man who can find? ⁷ A just man that walketh in his integrity, blessed are his children after him. ⁸ A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes. ⁹ Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? ¹⁰ Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD. ¹¹ Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. ¹² The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them. ¹³ Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread. ¹⁴ It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. ¹⁵ There is gold, and abundance of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. ¹⁶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for strangers. ¹⁷ Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. ¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel: and by wise guidance make thou war, ¹⁹ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips. ²⁰ Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness. ²¹ An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed. ²² Say not thou, I will recompense evil: wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee. ²³ Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good. ²⁴ A man’s goings are of the LORD; how then can man understand his way? ²⁵ It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, and after vows to make inquiry. ²⁶ A wise king winnoweth the wicked, and bringeth the [threshing] wheel over them. ²⁷ The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all the innermost parts of the belly. ²⁸ Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy. ²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the hoary head. ³⁰ Stripes that wound cleanse away evil: and strokes [reach] the innermost parts of the belly.

²¹ and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. ²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. ²³ And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

³¹ And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth: ³² come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. ³³ And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁴ And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. ³⁵ And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁶ Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, that he died.

¹³ And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, smite Amnon, then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out from Samaria. ¹⁸ And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive. ¹⁹ So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ And they slew every one his man; and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with horsemen. ²¹ And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.

²⁹ Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it goeth down smoothly. ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, [shalt thou say], and I was not hurt; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes [to say], Where is strong drink?

²² Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink:

⁷ But these also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are gone astray; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

¹² Come ye, [say they], I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, [a day] great beyond measure.

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding.

⁵ On the day of our king the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners.

¹⁵ Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that addest thy venom [thereto], and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! ¹⁶ Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and be as one uncircumcised: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and foul shame shall be upon thy glory.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they which practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the LORD, therefore they are holy: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.

²³ Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.

³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it. ¹⁵ In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

¹² The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding allayeth great offences.

¹⁰ They shall walk after the LORD, who shall roar like a lion: for he shall roar, and the children shall come trembling from the west.

⁸ The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

¹⁰ Thou hast consulted shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast sinned against thy soul.

⁹ And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

¹⁷ He that is soon angry will deal foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before there be quarrelling.

⁶ A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for stripes.

¹¹ The discretion of a man maketh him slow to anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

²⁴ The proud and haughty man, scorner is his name, he worketh in the arrogance of pride.

⁸ Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. ⁹ Debate thy cause with thy neighbour [himself], and disclose not the secret of another: ¹⁰ Lest he that heareth it revile thee, and thine infamy turn not away.

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace, which he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved: ⁷ in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

³² and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even as God also in Christ forgave you.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

¹ Whence [come] wars and whence [come] fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your pleasures that war in your members?

¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man.

⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber; and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ [As] the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the sluggard upon his bed. ¹⁵ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

³ For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them: ⁴ but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. ⁵ Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. ⁶ But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. ⁷ Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. ⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out. ⁹ But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. ¹⁰ And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut.

²⁴ And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering where thou didst not scatter: ²⁵ and I was afraid, and went away and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, thou hast thine own. ²⁶ But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter; ²⁷ thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back mine own with interest. ²⁸ Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents.

⁵ Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in [your] virtue knowledge; ⁶ and in [your] knowledge temperance; and in [your] temperance patience; and in [your] patience godliness; ⁷ and in [your] godliness love of the brethren; and in [your] love of the brethren love. ⁸ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful unto the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. ¹⁰ Wherefore, brethren, give the more diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never stumble: ¹¹ for thus shall be richly supplied unto you the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

⁶ They search out iniquities; We have accomplished, [say they], a diligent search: and the inward thought of every one, and the heart, is deep.

⁴ The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters; the wellspring of wisdom is as a flowing brook.

¹¹ For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

³³ And he said unto him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

¹⁵ He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil;

³⁹ and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for ever; for the good of them, and of their children after them:

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

³⁹ For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

¹¹ For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, ¹² instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world;

³ For I rejoiced greatly, when brethren came and bare witness unto thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth. ⁴ Greater joy have I none than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.

³ And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines? ⁴ Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

⁴ [He shall be] as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, a morning without clouds; [when] the tender grass [springeth] out of the earth, through clear shining after rain.

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

⁹ For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.

⁴ The king’s strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

⁶ Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall minister unto me. ⁷ He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that speaketh falsehood shall not be established before mine eyes. ⁸ Morning by morning will I destroy all the wicked of the land; to cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of the LORD.

¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness.

⁴⁶ If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto the land of the enemy, far off or near;

³⁶ If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto a land far off or near;

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

⁴ How then can man be just with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

⁵ Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

²⁰ Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

⁴ For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

³⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure.

²⁵ The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God: ²⁶ and thou shalt not bring an abomination into thine house, and become a devoted thing like unto it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.

¹³ Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. ¹⁴ Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. ¹⁵ A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

¹ A FALSE balance is an abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

¹¹ A just balance and scales are the LORD’S: all the weights of the bag are his work.

²³ Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

⁴ Hear this, O ye that would swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail, ⁵ saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit; ⁶ that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes, and sell the refuse of the wheat. ⁷ The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

¹⁰ Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? ¹¹ Shall I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights?

⁸ But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part [shall be] in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

³ The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

⁸ The way of him that is laden with guilt is exceeding crooked: but as for the pure, his work is right.

¹⁵ Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹⁶ By their fruits ye shall know them. Do [men] gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

¹⁵ For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

⁶⁶ And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁴⁶ And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions: ⁴⁷ and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

⁴³ For there is no good tree that bringeth forth corrupt fruit; nor again a corrupt tree that bringeth forth good fruit. ⁴⁴ For each tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh [a man] dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? is it not I the LORD?

⁹ He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?

¹⁸ Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

¹³ Therefore speak I to them in parables; because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive: ¹⁵ For this people’s heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

¹⁸ to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me.

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; ¹⁸ having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

¹¹ He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well: I saw, and received instruction. ³³ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber; and thy want as an armed man.

⁶ So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

¹¹ in diligence not slothful; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that now it is high time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed.

³⁴ Awake up righteously, and sin not; for some have no knowledge of God: I speak [this] to move you to shame.

¹⁴ Wherefore [he] saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.

¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat.

¹⁰ Is there a thing whereof men say, See, this is new? it hath been already, in the ages which were before us.

⁷ [He is] a trafficker, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress. ⁸ And Ephraim said, Surely I am become rich, I have found me wealth: in all my labours they shall find in me none iniquity that were sin.

⁶ that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.

¹² But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷ Gold and glass cannot equal it: neither shall the exchange thereof be jewels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal: yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her.

¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared unto her.

²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but the foolish die for lack of understanding.

⁷ The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so.

²³ A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth: and a word in due season, how good is it!

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! yea, to get understanding is rather to be chosen than silver.

²¹ The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.

²⁴ Pleasant words are [as] an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹² [As] an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, [so is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

⁹ And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written uprightly, [even] words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails well fastened are [the words of] the masters of assemblies, [which] are given from one shepherd.

¹⁴ How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? ¹⁵ and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.

²⁶ If thou at all take thy neighbour’s garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him by that the sun goeth down: ²⁷ for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

³ For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and wily of heart.

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: but he that hateth suretiship is sure.

²⁶ Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts: ²⁷ If thou hast not wherewith to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

²⁷ For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

¹³ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for a strange woman.

⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat. ⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; ¹³ Though he spare it, and will not let it go, but keep it still within his mouth; ¹⁴ Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. ¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper’s tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not look upon the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and butter. ¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. ¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; he hath violently taken away an house, and he shall not build it up. ²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him, he shall not save aught of that wherein he delighteth.

¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁵ He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath sated me with wormwood. ¹⁶ He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.

²⁵ choosing rather to be evil entreated with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;

¹ And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel asked of the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them? ² And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

²⁹ And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.

⁷ Behold, ye children of Israel, all of you, give here your advice and counsel.

¹⁸ And the children of Israel arose, and went up to Beth-el, and asked counsel of God; and they said, Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin? And the LORD said, Judah [shall go up] first.

²³ (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even; and they asked of the LORD, saying, Shall I again draw nigh to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)

²⁶ Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto Beth-el, and wept, and sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until even; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. ²⁷ And the children of Israel asked of the LORD, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, ²⁸ and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into thine hand.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? ²⁷ And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother.

¹⁷ Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. ¹⁸ And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon; and trode down the thistle. ¹⁹ Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand [of their enemies], because they had sought after the gods of Edom. ²¹ So Joash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ²² And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent. ²³ And Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

¹⁴ Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

²² Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

⁶ For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war: and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

⁸ Go not forth hastily to strive, lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.

³¹ Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

¹³ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

³ He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

²⁹ A man of violence enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him in a way that is not good.

⁸ The words of a whisperer are as dainty, morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

²¹ My son, fear thou the LORD and the king: [and] meddle not with them that are given to change:

²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth. ²¹ [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to inflame strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

¹⁸ For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

¹² Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

¹⁷ And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

⁹ For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall surely be put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him.

¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ For there will be no reward to the evil man; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

¹¹ There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.

⁴ For God said, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.

¹³ Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death: ¹¹ but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, Given [to God]; ¹² ye no longer suffer him to do aught for his father or his mother; ¹³ making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things ye do.

¹³ Wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁴ Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.

⁸ He that augmenteth his substance by usury and increase, gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.

²⁰ A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished.

²² He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges!

⁴ I will cause it to go forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

² If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, then will I send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

⁹ But they that desire to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition.

³⁵ Vengeance is mine, and recompence, At the time when their foot shall slide: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that are to come upon them shall make haste.

¹² It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done unto me, and that the LORD will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day.

¹⁴ Wait on the LORD: be strong, and let thine heart take courage; yea, wait thou on the LORD.

³⁴ Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.

¹³ Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

²⁹ Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.

³¹ but they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

²⁵ The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. ²⁶ It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

³⁹ but I say unto you, Resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

¹⁷ Render to no man evil for evil. Take thought for things honourable in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as in you lieth, be at peace with all men. ¹⁹ Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord.

¹⁵ See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but alway follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.

²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

¹⁹ Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.

¹⁰ Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

¹⁰ Ye shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.

⁷ [He is] a trafficker, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.

⁵ saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat? making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;

⁴ Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.

¹² What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he instruct in the way that he shall choose.

²³ A man’s goings are established of the LORD; and he delighteth in his way.

⁸ The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

⁹ A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. ⁷ Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.

²³ O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

²⁸ for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

¹⁵ If any one commit a trespass, and sin unwittingly, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring his guilt offering unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy estimation in silver by shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering:

¹⁰ There shall no stranger eat of the holy thing: a sojourner of the priest’s, or an hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing. ¹¹ But if a priest buy any soul, the purchase of his money, he shall eat of it; and such as are born in his house, they shall eat of his bread. ¹² And if a priest’s daughter be married unto a stranger, she shall not eat of the heave offering of the holy things. ¹³ But if a priest’s daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father’s house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s bread: but there shall no stranger eat thereof. ¹⁴ And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give unto the priest the holy thing. ¹⁵ And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD;

⁹ And if it be a beast, whereof men offer an oblation unto the LORD, all that any man giveth of such unto the LORD shall be holy. ¹⁰ He shall not alter it, nor change it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good: and if he shall at all change beast for beast, then both it and that for which it is changed shall be holy.

³⁰ And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD. ³¹ And if a man will redeem aught of his tithe, he shall add unto it the fifth part thereof.

² When a man voweth a vow unto the LORD, or sweareth an oath to bind his soul with a bond, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. ³ Also when a woman voweth a vow unto the LORD, and bindeth herself by a bond, being in her father’s house, in her youth; ⁴ and her father heareth her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father holdeth his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. ⁵ But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; none of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her. ⁶ And if she be [married] to a husband, while her vows are upon her, or the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul; ⁷ and her husband hear it, and hold his peace at her in the day that he heareth it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand. ⁸ But if her husband disallow her in the day that he heareth it; then he shall make void her vow which is upon her, and the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul: and the LORD shall forgive her. ⁹ But the vow of a widow, or of her that is divorced, [even] every thing wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand against her. ¹⁰ And if she vowed in her husband’s house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath, ¹¹ and her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not; then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. ¹² But if her husband made them null and void in the day that he heard them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall forgive her. ¹³ Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void. ¹⁴ But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he hath established them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them. ¹⁵ But if he shall make them null and void after that he hath heard them; then he shall bear her iniquity. ¹⁶ These are the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father’s house.

⁷ A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

⁴ When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou vowest. ⁵ Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. ⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

⁸ Will a man rob God? yet ye rob me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. ⁹ Ye are cursed with the curse; for ye rob me, even this whole nation. ¹⁰ Bring ye the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough [to receive it].

³³ Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his tidings. ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? ¹² And David commanded his young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth, and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

³¹ And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I destroy: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

⁸ A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

²⁷ For the fitches are not threshed with a sharp [threshing] instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod. ²⁸ Bread [corn] is ground; for he will not ever be threshing it: and though the wheel of his cart and his horses scatter it, he doth not grind it.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

⁸ But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

³⁰ Stripes that wound cleanse away evil: and strokes [reach] the innermost parts of the belly.

¹⁵ in that they shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness therewith, and their thoughts one with another accusing or else excusing [them];

² but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. ³ But and if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled in them that are perishing: ⁴ in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn [upon them]. ⁵ For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. ⁶ Seeing it is God, that said, Light shall shine out of darkness, who shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

¹² For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁹ Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him, ²⁰ whereinsoever our heart condemn us; because God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;

⁷ For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the lovingkindness of the Most High he shall not be moved.

⁷ He shall abide before God for ever: O prepare lovingkindness and truth, that they may preserve him.

¹ A Psalm of David. I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing praises.

⁶ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

⁵ And a throne shall be established in mercy, and one shall sit thereon in truth, in the tent of David; judging, and seeking judgment, and swift to do righteousness.

³² Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and thou shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD.

³¹ The hoary head is a crown of glory, it shall be found in the way of righteousness.

²³ Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: ²⁴ but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth, and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

¹⁴ I have written unto you, fathers, because ye know him which is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the evil one.

²⁵ smite a scorner, and the simple will learn prudence: and reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.

⁹ Therefore by this shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, [so that] the Asherim and the sun-images shall rise no more.

⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness.
