¹ The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD as the watercourses: he turneth it whithersoever he will. ² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weigheth the hearts. ³ To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice. ⁴ An high look, and a proud heart, [even] the lamp of the wicked, is sin. ⁵ The thoughts of the diligent [tend] only to plenteousness: but every one that is hasty [hasteth] only to want. ⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vapour driven to and fro; they [that seek them] seek death. ⁷ The violence of the wicked shall sweep them away; because they refuse to do judgment. ⁸ The way of him that is laden with guilt is exceeding crooked: but as for the pure, his work is right. ⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house. ¹⁰ The soul of the wicked desireth evil: his neighbour findeth no favour in his eyes. ¹¹ When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge. ¹² The righteous man considereth the house of the wicked; [how] the wicked are overthrown to [their] ruin. ¹³ Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry, but shall not be heard. ¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger, and a present in the bosom strong wrath. ¹⁵ It is joy to the righteous to do judgment; but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity. ¹⁶ The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall rest in the congregation of the dead. ¹⁷ He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich. ¹⁸ The wicked is a ransom for the righteous; and the treacherous [cometh] in the stead of the upright. ¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman. ²⁰ There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man swalloweth it up. ²¹ He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour. ²² A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and bringeth down the strength of the confidence thereof. ²³ Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. ²⁴ The proud and haughty man, scorner is his name, he worketh in the arrogance of pride. ²⁵ The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. ²⁶ There is that coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and withholdeth not. ²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind! ²⁸ A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth shall speak unchallenged. ²⁹ A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he ordereth his ways. ³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. ³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but victory is of the LORD,

²² and kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem; ²⁸ and hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. And I was strengthened according to the hand of the LORD my God upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me.

¹¹ O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who delight to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. (Now I was cupbearer to the king.)

⁴ Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.

¹⁵ Thou didst cleave fountain and flood: thou driedst up mighty rivers.

⁴ Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty.

²⁵ He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants.

⁴⁶ He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

³ The sea saw it, and fled; Jordan was driven back.

⁵ What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleest? thou Jordan, that thou turnest back?

¹ The preparations of the heart belong to man: but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

⁹ A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

²⁴ A man’s goings are of the LORD; how then can man understand his way?

¹⁹ Behold, I will do a new thing; now shall it spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

²⁷ that saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

⁴ And the third poured out his bowl into the rivers and the fountains of the waters; and it became blood.

¹² And the sixth poured out his bowl upon the great river, the [river] Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way might be made ready for the kings that [come] from the sunrising.

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

² For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, that his iniquity shall not be found out and be hated.

² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes: but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

²⁵ There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

⁶ Most men wilt proclaim every one his own kindness: but a faithful man who can find?

¹² If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this: doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his work?

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes; and [yet] are not washed from their filthiness.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get.

²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself unto them, for that he knew all men, ²⁵ and because he needed not that any one should bear witness concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.

³ For if a man thinketh himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

²² And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

⁸ I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices; and thy burnt offerings are continually before me.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats. ¹² When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; new moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies,—I cannot away with iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil: ¹⁷ learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

²¹ Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Add your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat ye flesh. ²² For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: ²³ but this thing I commanded them, saying, Hearken unto my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.

⁶ For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

⁶ Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? ⁷ will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? ⁸ He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

³³ and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, [saith], He will not require [it]. All his thoughts are, There is no God.

¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind!

¹³ There is a generation, Oh how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁷ And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

¹⁴ I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

²³ But he that doubteth is condemned if he eat, because [he eateth] not of faith; and whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

²¹ An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

²³ Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, [and] look well to thy herds: ²⁴ For riches are not for ever; and doth the crown endure unto all generations? ²⁵ The hay is carried, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and the herbs of the mountains are gathered in. ²⁶ The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field: ²⁷ And [there will be] goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household; and maintenance for thy maidens.

²² He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him.

²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have whereof to give to him that hath need.

¹¹ and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you; ¹² that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.

³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

² Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

¹¹ Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall have increase.

¹⁴ It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me:

¹¹ As the partridge that gathereth [young] which she hath not brought forth, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereto ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

⁹ But they that desire to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.

¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁶ The LORD hath made himself known, he hath executed judgment: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higaion. Selah

¹⁸ And these lay wait for their own blood, they lurk privily for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

⁶ Blessings are upon the head of the righteous: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

²¹ He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor, neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: ²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.

²³ Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves; every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. ²⁴ Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:

⁹ Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye have not known, ¹⁰ and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered; that ye may do all these abominations. ¹¹ Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, saith the LORD.

¹⁵ And I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren, even the whole seed of Ephraim.

¹⁸ As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.

¹³ Behold, therefore, I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. ¹⁴ Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.

⁹ Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. ¹⁰ They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. ¹¹ The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us. ¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

³ Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole land: for every one that stealeth shall be purged out on the one side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be purged out on the other side according to it. ⁴ I will cause it to go forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with empty words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

⁵ And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ⁶ And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

¹² And God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, a man that drinketh iniquity like water!

² The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek after God. ³ They are all gone aside; they are together become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

¹⁵ Who are crooked in their ways, and perverse in their paths:

²⁶ Evil devices are an abomination to the LORD: but pleasant words [are] pure.

²⁹ Behold, this only have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.

¹⁰ Many shall purify themselves; and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand: but they that be wise shall understand.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

³³ Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit.

⁹ and he made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.

³ for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and walk after the manner of men?

² wherein aforetime ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience; ³ among whom we also all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:—

¹⁵ To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works.

³ For we also were aforetime foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

⁵ not by works [done] in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost,

²² Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from the heart fervently: ²³ having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which liveth and abideth.

²⁹ If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one also that doeth righteousness is begotten of him.

³ And every one that hath this hope [set] on him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

⁴ A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

¹⁷ Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

¹ Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than an house full of feasting with strife.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land, than with a contentious and fretful woman.

²⁴ It is better to dwell in the comer of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike: ¹⁶ He that would restrain her restraineth the wind, and his right hand encountereth oil.

⁸ Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee: wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes; for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David. ⁹ And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased. ¹⁰ And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master. ¹¹ Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men of whom I know not whence they be?

⁴ He deviseth iniquity upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

² Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah

⁵ Well is it with the man that dealeth graciously and lendeth; he shall maintain his cause in judgment.

⁹ He hath dispersed, he hath given to the needy; his righteousness endureth for ever: his horn shall be exalted with honour.

²⁹ Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

¹² The wicked desireth the net of evil men: but the root of the righteous yieldeth [fruit].

¹³ Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry, but shall not be heard.

⁶ For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise profaneness, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ⁷ The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the meek with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. ⁸ But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and in liberal things shall he continue.

² who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ who also eat the flesh of my people; and they flay their skin from off them, and break their bones: yea, they chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, ²² covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness:

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath shewed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

¹ Whence [come] wars and whence [come] fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your pleasures that war in your members? ² Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. ³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures. ⁴ Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. ⁵ Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying?

⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous [one]; he doth not resist you.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the vainglory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is in the midst of thee.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

⁷ But God shall shoot at them; with an arrow suddenly shall they be wounded. ⁸ So they shall be made to stumble, their own tongue being against them: all that see them shall wag the head. ⁹ And all men shall fear; and they shall declare the work of God, and shall wisely consider of his doing.

⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; and that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

⁹ Give [instruction] to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁴ The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on folly.

¹ He that separateth himself seeketh [his own] desire, and rageth against all sound wisdom.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

²⁵ smite a scorner, and the simple will learn prudence: and reprove one that hath understanding, [and] he will understand knowledge.

⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.

¹¹ And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things. ¹² And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch. ¹³ But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them; ¹⁴ and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. ⁹ Neither let us tempt the Lord, as some of them tempted, and perished by the serpents. ¹⁰ Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer. ¹¹ Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away [from them]. ² For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; ³ how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard;

²⁸ A man that hath set at nought Moses’ law dieth without compassion on [the word of] two or three witnesses: ²⁹ of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

¹³ And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell; and there were killed in the earthquake seven thousand persons: and the rest were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

²⁹ And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold fast thereby, but it shall not endure.

¹⁴ He shall be rooted out of his tent wherein he trusteth; and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son’s son among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned. ²⁰ They that come after shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

²⁸ For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt? ²⁹ Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens? ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death, and his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as the moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but he shall not be gathered; he openeth his eyes, and he is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² For [God] shall hurl at him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah

⁴³ Whoso is wise shall give heed to these things, and they shall consider the mercies of the LORD.

³ The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them. ⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. ⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

⁶ Righteousness guardeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tent of the upright shall flourish.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them; but transgressors shall fall therein.

¹¹ I have overthrown [some] among you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a brand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

⁹ Woe to him that getteth an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil! ¹⁰ Thou hast consulted shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast sinned against thy soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. ¹² Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!

⁵ Howbeit with most of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁴ For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; ⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live ungodly; ⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] lawless deeds): ⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;

⁶ by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷ but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

⁷ If there be with thee a poor man, one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: ⁸ but thou shalt surely open thine hand unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need [in that] which he wanteth. ⁹ Beware that there be not a base thought in thine heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy work, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto. ¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt surely open thine hand unto thy brother, to thy needy, and to thy poor, in thy land.

¹ Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. ² For there were that said, We, our sons and our daughters, are many: let us get corn, that we may eat and live. ³ Some also there were that said, We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses: let us get corn, because of the dearth. ⁴ There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute [upon] our fields and our vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage [already]: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.

¹³ Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent: [they are] like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear;

²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me diligently, but they shall not find me:

²⁷ He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? ⁸ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy healing shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward. ⁹ Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking wickedly;

¹⁶ but ye turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and ye brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus saith the LORD: Ye have not hearkened unto me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim unto you a liberty, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ Thus hath the LORD of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassion every man to his brother: ¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. ¹¹ But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by his spirit by the hand of the former prophets: therefore came there great wrath from the LORD of hosts. ¹³ And it came to pass that, as he cried, and they would not hear; so they shall cry, and I will not hear, said the LORD of hosts;

¹⁴ For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you.

³⁰ And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay that which was due. ³¹ So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were exceeding sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. ³² Then his lord called him unto him, and saith to him, Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou besoughtest me: ³³ shouldest not thou also have had mercy on thy fellow-servant, even as I had mercy on thee? ³⁴ And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due. ³⁵ So shall also my heavenly Father do unto you, if ye forgive not every one his brother from your hearts.

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels: ⁴² for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.

²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, open to us; and he shall answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are;

⁵⁷ But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath shewed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment. ¹⁴ What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him? ¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked, and in lack of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?

²⁰ and ye shall say, Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them, If it be so now, do this; take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him: and he said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

⁸ A gift is [as] a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

²³ A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom, to pervert the ways of judgment.

¹⁶ A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

⁶ Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

³ But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: ⁴ that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall recompense thee.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy: and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

⁸ I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart.

¹ Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

¹⁶ I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

⁹² Unless thy law had been my delight, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

²⁰ For why shouldest thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

²⁹ The way of the LORD is a strong hold to the upright; but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

¹² The righteous man considereth the house of the wicked; [how] the wicked are overthrown to [their] ruin.

¹² I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live.

⁵ Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways: behold, thou wast wroth, and we sinned: in them [have we been] of long time, and shall we be saved?

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and them that do iniquity, ⁴² and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁷ and he shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. ²⁸ There shall be the weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and yourselves cast forth without.

³⁴ Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.

²² For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol; death shall be their shepherd: and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume, that there be no habitation for it.

⁵ But as for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.

¹⁸ For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead: ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither do they attain unto the paths of life:

²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, all her slain are a mighty host. ²⁷ Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

²⁰ Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise: but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

⁶ and them that are turned back from following the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired after him.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth ill hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

¹ And you [did he quicken], when ye were dead through your trespasses and sins,

⁴ For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, ⁵ and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ and [then] fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁸ But my righteous one shall live by faith: And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.

²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² It has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but [they went out], that they might be made manifest how that they all are not of us.

¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength; and thy labours [be] in the house of an alien; ¹¹ And thou mourn at thy latter end, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

²⁰ There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man swalloweth it up.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.

¹³ And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. ¹⁶ And he would fain have been filled with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

⁶ But she that giveth herself to pleasure is dead while she liveth.

⁴ traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God;

⁸ The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

³ For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy saviour; I have given Egypt as thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. ⁴ Since thou hast been precious in my sight, [and] honourable, and I have loved thee; therefore will I give men for thee, and peoples for thy life.

⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. ⁵ But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

¹⁸ Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit;

⁶ And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! then would I fly away, and be at rest. ⁷ Lo, then would I wander far off, I would lodge in the wilderness. Selah

⁵ Woe is me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar! ⁶ My soul hath long had her dwelling with him that hateth peace.

⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

² Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice.

⁵ Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

³ Wealth and riches are in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

²² The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow therewith.

⁶ In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁹ Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

¹¹ Wisdom is as good as an inheritance: yea, more excellent is it for them that see the sun.

¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life: and money answereth all things.

⁸ But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren.

¹⁹ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust doth consume, and where thieves break through and steal: ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

³ For the foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them: ⁴ but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil [man] out of the evil [treasure] bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want.

¹ And he said also unto the disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he was wasting his goods.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day: ²⁰ and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the [crumbs] that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

⁴ The reward of humility [and] the fear of the LORD [is] riches, and honour, and life.

¹ Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the LORD: look unto the rock whence ye were hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye were digged.

³ And let us know, let us follow on to know the LORD; his going forth is sure as the morning: and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter rain that watereth the earth.

⁶ Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

⁷ to them that by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honour and incorruption, eternal life: ⁸ but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, [shall be] wrath and indignation, ⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek; ¹⁰ but glory and honour and peace to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek:

¹⁹ So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another.

⁵⁸ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not vain in the Lord.

¹² Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may apprehend that for which also I was apprehended by Christ Jesus.

²¹ prove all things; hold fast that which is good;

¹¹ But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

²² But flee youthful lusts, and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: ⁸ henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day: and not only to me, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

¹⁴ Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:

⁷ that the proof of your faith, [being] more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, might be found unto praise and glory and honour at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

⁶ And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither. ⁷ Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion; the same is the city of David. ⁸ And David said on that day, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and [smite] the lame and the blind, that are hated of David’s soul. Wherefore they say, There are the blind and the lame; he cannot come into the house. ⁹ And David dwelt in the strong hold, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

¹⁶ Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee. ¹⁷ And he came near unto her, and the woman said, Art thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said unto him, Hear the words of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do hear. ¹⁸ Then she spake, saying, they were wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask [counsel] at Abel: and so they ended [the matter]. ¹⁹ I am of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD? ²⁰ And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy. ²¹ The matter is not so: but a man of the hill country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall. ²² Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the king.

⁵ A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might.

¹⁹ Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers which are in a city.

¹³ I have also seen wisdom under the sun on this wise, and it seemed great unto me: ¹⁴ There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: ¹⁵ Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of the wise [spoken] in quiet are heard more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression: but he that refraineth his lips doeth wisely.

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man: but the righteous shall come out of trouble.

³ He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his life: [but] he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

²⁷ He that spareth his words hath knowledge: and he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: when he shutteth his lips, he is [esteemed as] prudent.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

²⁶ If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. ³ Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths, that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. ⁴ Behold, the ships also, though they are so great, and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. ⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: ⁸ but the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison. ⁹ Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the likeness of God: ¹⁰ out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. ¹¹ Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter? ¹² Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? neither [can] salt water yield sweet. ¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? let him shew by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

⁵ And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not down, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath. ⁶ But he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁸ Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour [goeth] humility.

²⁹ Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

⁸ Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: [and] the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. ⁹ Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁶ We have heard of the pride of Moab, [that] he is very proud; even of his arrogancy, and his pride, and his wrath; his boastings are nought.

²⁹ We have heard of the pride of Moab, [that] he is very proud; his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, and the haughtiness of his heart.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully learned of the wise men.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man.

²⁴ The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be put under taskwork.

²⁷ The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the precious substance of men [is to] the diligent.

¹⁹ The way of the sluggard is as an hedge of thorns: but the path of the upright is made an highway.

²⁴ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be murdered in the streets.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well: I saw, and received instruction. ³³ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber; and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

²⁶ But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter;

²⁶ All the day long he dealeth graciously, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed.

⁴² Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

³⁰ Give to every one that asketh thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. ³¹ And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. ³² And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them. ³³ And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do [them] good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. ³⁶ Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

³³ I coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel. ³⁴ Ye yourselves know that these hands ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. ³⁵ In all things I gave you an example, how that so labouring ye ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

⁷ But as ye abound in everything, [in] faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and [in] all earnestness, and [in] your love to us, [see] that ye abound in this grace also. ⁸ I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love. ⁹ For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich.

⁹ as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for ever. ¹⁰ And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, shall supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness: ¹¹ ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God. ¹² For the ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God; ¹³ seeing that through the proving [of you] by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of [your] contribution unto them and unto all; ¹⁴ while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, long after you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.

⁵ For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness, God is witness; ⁶ nor seeking glory of men, neither from you, nor from others, when we might have been burdensome, as apostles of Christ. ⁷ But we were gentle in the midst of you, as when a nurse cherisheth her own children: ⁸ even so, being affectionately desirous of you, we were well pleased to impart unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were become very dear to us. ⁹ For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

¹² therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down upon me to Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favour of the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering. ¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

²¹ But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the devoted things, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. ²² And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. ²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

⁸ I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices; and thy burnt offerings are continually before me. ⁹ I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds. ¹⁰ For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. ¹¹ I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. ¹² If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. ¹³ Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

⁹ He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats. ¹² When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; new moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies,—I cannot away with iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil:

³ He that killeth an ox is as he that slayeth a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as he that breaketh a dog’s neck; he that offereth an oblation, [as he that offereth] swine’s blood; he that burneth frankincense, as he that blesseth an idol: yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations;

²⁰ To what purpose cometh there to me frankincense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices pleasing unto me.

¹¹ Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it, saith the LORD. ¹² But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of my people Israel.

²¹ I hate, I despise your feasts, and I will take no delight in your solemn assemblies. ²² Yea, though ye offer me your burnt offerings and meal offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

¹ Thou shalt not take up a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

¹⁶ If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrong-doing; ¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges which shall be in those days; ¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to do unto his brother: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

¹⁹ A false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall perish.

¹⁸ A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

¹⁵ And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she confidently affirmed that it was even so. And they said, It is his angel.

¹⁷ When I therefore was thus minded, did I shew fickleness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the yea yea and the nay nay? ¹⁸ But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay. ¹⁹ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, [even] by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him is yea. ²⁰ For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us.

¹³ But having the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, I believed, and therefore did I speak; we also believe, and therefore also we speak;

⁸ Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I will that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they which have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men:

⁵ Oh that my ways were established to observe thy statutes!

⁵⁹ I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

⁵ The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.

² Lift up thine eyes unto the bare heights, and see; where hast thou not been lain with? By the ways hast thou sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness. ³ Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; yet thou hadst a whore’s forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.

³ O LORD, do not thine eyes look upon truth? thou hast stricken them, but they were not grieved; thou hast consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹² Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

¹⁶ As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee. ¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

²⁸ Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

⁵ Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways,

⁷ Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

¹⁵ And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

¹⁸ Consider, I pray you, from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth [month], since the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid, consider it. ¹⁹ Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree hath not brought forth; from this day will I bless [you].

¹⁷ But when he came to himself he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish here with hunger! ¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight:

¹¹ Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way unto you:

²¹ There are many devices in a man’s heart; but the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

⁵ Because Syria hath counselled evil against thee, Ephraim [also], and the son of Remaliah, saying, ⁶ Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set up a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeel: ⁷ thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

⁹ Make an uproar; O ye peoples, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces: gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

²⁷ For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not [yet] done; saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: ¹¹ calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country; yea, I have spoken, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed, I will also do it.

²³ Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

¹³ Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not: for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

²⁷ for of a truth in this city against thy holy Servant Jesus, whom thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together, ²⁸ to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel foreordained to come to pass.

³⁹ but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness: ²⁰ and again, The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain.

⁸ and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence; for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

³ But thou, O LORD, art a shield about me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

⁸ Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing be upon thy people. Selah

⁷ Some [trust] in chariots, and some in horses: but we will make mention of the name of the LORD our God.

¹⁷ An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great power. ¹⁸ Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

²⁰ God is unto us a God of deliverances; and unto JEHOVAH the Lord belong the issues from death.

¹⁰ It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who rescueth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

¹⁰ He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh no pleasure in the legs of a man.

¹¹ I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but fame and chance happeneth to them all.

¹ Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help, and stay on horses; and trust in chariots, because they are many, and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

²³ Truly in vain is [the help that is looked for] from the hills, the tumult on the mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
