¹ ¶ Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia: ² Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. ³ ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; ⁴ who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. ⁵ For in the same manner that the sufferings of the Christ abound in us, so also our consolation abounds by Christ. ⁶ And if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and saving health, which is effected in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and saving health. ⁷ ¶ And our hope of you is steadfast, being certain, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. ⁸ Because, brothers, we would not have you ignore our tribulation which was done unto us in Asia, that we were burdened beyond our strength, in such a manner that we despaired even of life: ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death and does deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us; ¹¹ ye also helping us with prayer, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons, thanks may be given by many on our behalf. ¹² ¶ For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with carnal wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world and more abundantly towards you. ¹³ For we write no other things unto you than what ye read or also know, and I trust ye shall know them even to the end ¹⁴ as also ye have known in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus. ¹⁵ ¶ And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before that ye might have a second grace ¹⁶ and to pass by you into Macedonia and to come again out of Macedonia unto you and of you to be sent forward to Judaea. ¹⁷ When I, therefore, was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that of me there should be yes, yes, and no, no? ¹⁸ But God is faithful that our word toward you has not been yes and no. ¹⁹ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timothy, has not been yes and no, but in him was yes. ²⁰ For all the promises of God are yes in him, and in him Amen, by us for the glory of God. ²¹ Now he who confirms us with you unto Christ and has anointed us is God; ²² who has also sealed us and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. ²³ Moreover I call God for a witness upon my soul that I have not yet come unto Corinth to spare you. ²⁴ Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy, for by faith ye stand.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.

¹⁰ But he has known the way that I take; he has tried me, and I have come forth as gold. ¹¹ My feet have held to his steps, I have kept his way, and have not departed. ¹² Neither have I separated myself from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

⁵ In no wise should I justify you; until I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

¹ ¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid? ² For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit, ⁶ let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any blot has cleaved to my hands, ⁸ then let me sow, and let another eat, and let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ ¶ If my heart has been deceived regarding a woman, or if I have laid in wait at my neighbour’s door, ¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes unto hell and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb) ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate; ²² then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint. ²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power. ²⁴ ¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ if I beheld the sun when it shone or the moon walking in beauty; ²⁷ and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth kissed my hand; ²⁸ this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him; ³⁰ for I have never even suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse upon his soul; ³¹ when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller. ³³ ¶ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom; ³⁴ if I feared a great multitude or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and did not go out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners; ⁴⁰ let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. ³ O LORD my God, if I have done this: if there is iniquity in my hands, ⁴ if I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me, then let my persecutor escape without retribution. ⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; let him tread down my life upon the earth and lay my honour in the dust. ⁷ Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

³² Behold, I am against those that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and did tell them, and caused my people to err by their lies, and by their flattery; yet I did not send them, nor command them; and they did not profit this people at all, said the LORD.

³⁴ ¶ But at the end of the time I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes unto heaven, and my understanding was returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and glorified him that lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is through all ages:

²⁵ ¶ And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God does not give the Spirit by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

²² For the Father judges no man but has committed all judgment unto the Son ²³ that everyone should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who has sent him.

²¹ ¶ After these things were ended, Paul purposed by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem, after he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, saying, After I have been there, it behooves me to see Rome also. ²² So he sent into Macedonia two of those that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. ²³ And the same time there arose no small stir about the way. ²⁴ For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen, ²⁵ whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation and said, Sirs, ye know that by this gain we have our wealth. ²⁶ Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands ²⁷ so that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship. ²⁸ And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. ²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion, and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. ³⁰ And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. ³¹ And certain of the chief persons of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, asking him that he not present himself in the theatre. ³² Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was confused; and most of them did not know why they were come together. ³³ And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand and would have made his defense unto the people. ³⁴ But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. ³⁵ Then the town scribe, appeasing the people, said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that does not know how the city of the Ephesians is honored of the great goddess Diana and of the image which fell down from Jupiter?

²³ And not only they, but ourselves also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, that is to say, the redemption of our body.

If anyone trusts to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s. ⁸ For though I should glory somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed, ⁹ That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. ¹⁰ For his letters, they say, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. ¹¹ Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

³ But I fear that as the serpent deceived Eve through his craftiness, so your senses should be corrupted in some way, and ye should fall from the simplicity that is in the Christ.

¹⁰ It is the truth of Christ in me that this glory shall not be sealed up unto me in the regions of Achaia. ¹¹ Why? because I do not love you? God knows.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more, in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times I received forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned; three times I suffered shipwreck, night and day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by those of my nation, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ in labour and travail, in many watches, in hunger and thirst, in many fasts, in cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Beside those things that are without, my daily combat is the welfare of all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}. ²⁹ Who is sick, and I am not sick? who stumbles, and I burn not? ³⁰ If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern my weakness. ³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed for evermore, knows that I do not lie.

⁷ And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me above measure, there is given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. ⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me. ⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may dwell in me. ¹⁰ Therefore I am content in weaknesses, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake, for when I am weak, then am I strong.

⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.

¹² ¶ But above all things, my brethren, do not swear by heaven or by the earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no; lest ye fall into condemnation.

¹⁶ Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be whole. The effectual prayer of the righteous is very powerful. ¹⁷ Elijah was a man subject to passions like unto ours, and he asked in prayer that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

³ ¶ Praised be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus, the Christ, who according to his great mercy has begotten us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ, from the dead,

¹² Unto whom it was revealed that not unto themselves, but unto us they did administer the things, which are now announced unto you by those that have preached the gospel unto you by the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into.

¹⁶ ¶ having a good conscience, so in that which they murmur against you as of evildoers, those that blaspheme your good conversation in the Christ may be confused.

²¹ ¶ Unto the figure of which the baptism that does now correspond saves us (not taking away the uncleanness of the flesh, but giving testimony of a good conscience before God) by the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ,

³ and not as having lordship over the heritage of the Lord, but in such a manner as to be examples of the flock.

⁸ ¶ Be temperate and vigilant because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour, ⁹ resist him steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are to be accomplished in the company of your brethren that are in the world. ¹⁰ ¶ But the God of all grace, who has called us unto his eternal glory by Jesus, the Christ, after ye have suffered a little while, he himself perfects, confirms, strengthens, and establishes you.

¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished;

³ that which we have seen and heard we declare unto you, that ye also may have communion with us; and truly our communion is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

²⁰ ¶ But ye have the anointing of the Holy One, and ye know all things.

²⁴ Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. For if that which ye have heard from the beginning shall abide in you, ye also shall continue to abide in the Son and in the Father. ²⁵ And this is the promise that he has promised us, even eternal life.

²⁷ But the anointing which ye have received of him abides in you, and ye do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you of all things and is truth, and is no lie; and even as it has taught you, abide ye in him.

¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God; ²² and whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

⁹ If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he has testified of his Son. ¹⁰ ¶ He that believes in the Son of God has the witness of God in himself; he that does not believe God has made God a liar; because he does not believe the witness that God has testified of his Son. ¹¹ And this is the witness, that God has given eternal life to us, and this life is in his Son.

²⁰ But we know that the Son of God is come and has given us understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

⁴ I have rejoiced greatly, for I have found of thy sons that they walk in the truth, as we have received the commandment from the Father.

⁹ Whosoever rebels and does not abide in the doctrine of the Christ, does not have God. He that abides in the doctrine of the Christ, the same has the Father and the Son.

⁶ and has made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined in the fire, that thou may be made rich; and clothed in white raiment, so that the shame of thy nakedness not be uncovered; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou may see.

³ saying, Hurt not the land neither the sea nor the trees until we have sealed the slaves of our God in their foreheads.
