¹ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐγγίζουσιν (they drew near) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) καὶ (and) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), πρὸς (near) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), ἀποστέλλει (He sends) δύο (two) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ² καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village), τὴν (-) κατέναντι (before) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately), εἰσπορευόμενοι (entering) εἰς (into) αὐτὴν (it), εὑρήσετε (you will find) πῶλον (a colt) δεδεμένον (having been tied), ἐφ’ (upon) ὃν (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) οὔπω (not yet) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐκάθισεν (has sat); λύσατε (having untied) αὐτὸν (it), καὶ (also) φέρετε (bring it). ³ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says), ‘Τί (Why) ποιεῖτε (are you doing) τοῦτο (this)?’ εἴπατε (say), ‘‹Ὅτι› (Because) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (soon) αὐτὸν (it) ἀποστέλλει (He will send) πάλιν (back) ὧδε (here).’” ⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθον (they departed) καὶ (and) εὗρον (found) πῶλον (the colt) δεδεμένον (having been tied) πρὸς (at) θύραν (the door) ἔξω (outside), ἐπὶ (by) τοῦ (the) ἀμφόδου (street), καὶ (and) λύουσιν (they untied) αὐτόν (it). ⁵ καί (And) τινες (some) τῶν (of those) ἐκεῖ (there) ἑστηκότων (standing) ἔλεγον (were saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) ποιεῖτε (are you doing) λύοντες (untying) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt)?” ⁶ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them) καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (had commanded) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀφῆκαν (they allowed) αὐτούς (them). ⁷ καὶ (And) φέρουσιν (they led) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐπιβάλλουσιν (they cast upon) αὐτῷ (it) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (cloaks) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (it). ⁸ Καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (cloaks) αὐτῶν (of them) ἔστρωσαν (spread) εἰς (on) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (then), στιβάδας (branches) κόψαντες (having been cut down) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἀγρῶν (fields). ⁹ καὶ (And) οἱ (those) προάγοντες (going before) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out): “Ὡσαννά (Hosanna)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” ¹⁰ “Εὐλογημένη (Blessed) ἡ (is the) ἐρχομένη (coming) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) ἡμῶν (of us), Δαυίδ (David)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!” ¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple), καὶ (and) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around on) πάντα (all things), ὀψὲ (late) ἤδη (already) οὔσης (being) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δώδεκα (Twelve). ¹² Καὶ (And) τῇ (on the) ἐπαύριον (next day), ἐξελθόντων (having gone out) αὐτῶν (they) ἀπὸ (from) Βηθανίας (Bethany), ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry). ¹³ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (a fig tree) ἀπὸ (from) μακρόθεν (afar), ἔχουσαν (having) φύλλα (leaves), ἦλθεν (He went) εἰ (if) ἄρα (perhaps) τι (anything) εὑρήσει (He will find) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it). καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτὴν (it), οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (He found), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves); ὁ (the) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (season) οὐκ (not) ἦν (it was) σύκων (of figs). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to it), “Μηκέτι (No more) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), ἐκ (of) σοῦ (you) μηδεὶς (no one) καρπὸν (fruit) φάγοι (may eat).” καὶ (And) ἤκουον (were listening) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). Καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), ἤρξατο (He began) ἐκβάλλειν (to cast out) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀγοράζοντας (buying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple); καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) καθέδρας (seats) τῶν (of those) πωλούντων (selling) τὰς (the) περιστερὰς (doves) κατέστρεψεν (He overturned). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἤφιεν (He would permit) ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) διενέγκῃ (should carry) σκεῦος (a vessel) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἐδίδασκεν (He began teaching), καὶ (and) ἔλεγεν (was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (Not) γέγραπται (has it been written) ὅτι (-): ‘Ὁ (The) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer) κληθήσεται (will be called) πᾶσιν (for all) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (nations)’? ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) πεποιήκατε (have made) αὐτὸν (it) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’” ¹⁸ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσαν (heard it) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), καὶ (and) ἐζήτουν (they were seeking) πῶς (how) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσωσιν (they might destroy); ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid of) γὰρ (for) αὐτόν (Him); πᾶς (all) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἐξεπλήσσετο (was astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) ὀψὲ (evening) ἐγένετο (came), ἐξεπορεύοντο (they were going forth) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) πρωῒ (in the morning), εἶδον (they saw) τὴν (the) συκῆν (fig tree) ἐξηραμμένην (having been dried up) ἐκ (from the) ῥιζῶν (roots). ²¹ καὶ (And) ἀναμνησθεὶς (having remembered), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ἴδε (look), ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree) ἣν (that) κατηράσω (You cursed) ἐξήρανται (is dried up).” ²² Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἔχετε (Have) πίστιν (faith) θεοῦ (from God). ²³ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this), ‘Ἄρθητι (Be you taken away) καὶ (and) βλήθητι (be you cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea),’ καὶ (and) μὴ (not) διακριθῇ (shall doubt) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀλλὰ (but) πιστεύῃ (shall believe) ὅτι (that) ὃ (what) λαλεῖ (he says) γίνεται (takes place), ἔσται (it will be done) αὐτῷ (for him). ²⁴ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), πάντα (all things) ὅσα (whatever) προσεύχεσθε (praying), καὶ (also) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask), πιστεύετε (believe) ὅτι (that) ἐλάβετε (you receive), καὶ (and) ἔσται (it will be) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁵ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) στήκετε (you may stand) προσευχόμενοι (praying), ἀφίετε (forgive) εἴ (if) τι (anything) ἔχετε (you have) κατά (against) τινος (anyone), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens), ἀφῇ (might forgive) ὑμῖν (you) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ὑμῶν (of you).” ^{26 27} Καὶ (And) ἔρχονται (they come) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem). καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) περιπατοῦντος (is walking) αὐτοῦ (as He), ἔρχονται (come) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders). ²⁸ καὶ (And) ἔλεγον (they were saying) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (are You doing)? ἢ (Or), τίς (who) σοι (You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this), ἵνα (that) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῇς (You should do)?” ²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐπερωτήσω (I will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) ἕνα (one) λόγον (question), καὶ (and) ἀποκρίθητέ (you answer) μοι (Me), καὶ (and) ἐρῶ (I will tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ³⁰ τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (-) Ἰωάννου (of John), ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἦν (was it), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)? ἀποκρίθητέ (Answer) μοι (Me).” ³¹ Καὶ (And) διελογίζοντο (they began reasoning) πρὸς (with) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “‹Τί (What) εἴπωμεν› (should we say)? Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ³² ἀλλὰ (But) εἴπωμεν (should we say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men)’...” ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid of) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (people); ἅπαντες (all) γὰρ (for) εἶχον (were holding) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ὄντως (truly) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) ἦν (he was). ³³ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), λέγουσιν (they say), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).”

¹ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἤγγισαν (they drew near) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) καὶ (and) ἦλθον (came) εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), τότε (then) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) δύο (two) μαθητὰς (disciples), ² λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορεύεσθε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village) τὴν (-) κατέναντι (in front) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) εὐθέως* (immediately) εὑρήσετε (you will find) ὄνον (a donkey) δεδεμένην (having been tied), καὶ (and) πῶλον (a colt) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her); λύσαντες (having untied them), ἀγάγετέ (bring them) μοι (to Me). ³ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says) τι (anything), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) ὅτι (that) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has). εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (then) ἀποστελεῖ (he will send) αὐτούς (them).” ⁴ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (then) γέγονεν (came to pass) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῇ (it might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), ⁵ “Εἴπατε (Say) τῇ (to the) θυγατρὶ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεταί (comes) σοι (to you), πραῢς (gentle) καὶ (and) ἐπιβεβηκὼς (mounted) ἐπὶ (on) ὄνον (a donkey), καὶ (even) ἐπὶ (upon) πῶλον (a colt), υἱὸν (the foal) ὑποζυγίου (of a beast of burden).’” ⁶ Πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) καὶ (and) ποιήσαντες (having done) καθὼς (as) συνέταξεν (commanded) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ⁷ ἤγαγον (they brought) τὴν (the) ὄνον (donkey) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), καὶ (and) ἐπέθηκαν (put) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (their) ἱμάτια (cloaks), καὶ (and) ἐπεκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπάνω (on) αὐτῶν (them). ⁸ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) πλεῖστος (very great) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔστρωσαν (spread) ἑαυτῶν (their) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (cloaks) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) ἔκοπτον (were cutting down) κλάδους (branches) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) δένδρων (trees) καὶ (and) ἐστρώννυον (were spreading them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road). ⁹ Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out), λέγοντες (saying): “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθόντος (having entered) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ἐσείσθη (was stirred) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) πόλις (city), λέγουσα (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this)?” ¹¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλοι (the crowds) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).”

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐξῆλθεν (He went) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), καὶ (and) ηὐλίσθη (He passed the night) ἐκεῖ (there).

³ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (He) ἐπὶ (upon) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), προσῆλθον (came to) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰπὲ (Tell) ἡμῖν (us), πότε (when) ταῦτα (these things) ἔσται (will be)? καὶ (And) τί (what is) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) τῆς (-) σῆς (of Your) παρουσίας (coming) καὶ (and) συντελείας (of the consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age)?”

³⁰ Καὶ (And) ὑμνήσαντες (having sung a hymn), ἐξῆλθον (they went out) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives).

⁷ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεῖται (He calls near) τοὺς (the) δώδεκα (Twelve), καὶ (and) ἤρξατο (He began) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀποστέλλειν (to send forth) δύο (two) δύο (by two), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (He gave) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τῶν (over the) πνευμάτων (spirits) τῶν (-) ἀκαθάρτων (unclean).

³ Καὶ (And) καθημένου (sitting) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (upon) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), κατέναντι (opposite) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), ἐπηρώτα (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private) Πέτρος (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John) καὶ (and) Ἀνδρέας (Andrew),

¹³ Καὶ (And) ἀποστέλλει (He sends forth) δύο (two) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) ἀπαντήσει (will meet) ὑμῖν (you) ἄνθρωπος (a man), κεράμιον (a pitcher) ὕδατος (of water) βαστάζων (carrying). ἀκολουθήσατε (Follow) αὐτῷ (him).

²⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near) εἰς (to) Βηθφαγὴ (Bethphage) καὶ (and) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), πρὸς (toward) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mount) τὸ (-) καλούμενον (called) Ἐλαιῶν (Olivet), ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) δύο (two) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), ³⁰ λέγων (saying), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κατέναντι (ahead) κώμην (village), ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) εἰσπορευόμενοι (entering) εὑρήσετε (you will find) πῶλον (a colt) δεδεμένον (having been tied), ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) πώποτε (ever yet) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐκάθισεν (has sat); καὶ (and) λύσαντες (having untied) αὐτὸν (it), ἀγάγετε (bring it). ³¹ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐρωτᾷ (asks), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) λύετε (do you untie it)?’ οὕτως (thus) ἐρεῖτε (will you say), ‘Ὅτι (Because) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).’” ³² Ἀπελθόντες (Having departed) δὲ (then), οἱ (those) ἀπεσταλμένοι (having been sent) εὗρον (found it) καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτοῖς (to them). ³³ λυόντων (On untying) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (of them) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) κύριοι (masters) αὐτοῦ (of it) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (Why) λύετε (untie you) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt)?” ³⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) ὅτι (-), “Ὁ (The) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).” ³⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤγαγον (they led) αὐτὸν (it) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐπιρίψαντες (having cast) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) ἱμάτια (garments) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), ἐπεβίβασαν (they put on it) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ³⁶ Πορευομένου (Going) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὑπεστρώννυον (they were spreading) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) ἑαυτῶν (of them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road). ³⁷ ἐγγίζοντος (Drawing near) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἤδη (already) πρὸς (at) τῇ (the) καταβάσει (descent) τοῦ (of the) ὄρους (Mount) τῶν (-) Ἐλαιῶν (of Olives), ἤρξαντο (began) ἅπαν (all) τὸ (the) πλῆθος (multitude) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), χαίροντες (rejoicing), αἰνεῖν (to praise) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) περὶ (for) πασῶν (all) ὧν (which) εἶδον (they had seen) δυνάμεων (the mighty works), ³⁸ λέγοντες (saying): “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ὁ (-) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).” “Ἐν (In) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰρήνη (peace), καὶ (and) δόξα (glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest).” ³⁹ Καί (And) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), ἐπιτίμησον (rebuke) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You).” ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ‹ὅτι› (that) ἐὰν (if) οὗτοι (these) σιωπήσουσιν (will be silent), οἱ (the) λίθοι (stones) κράξουσιν (will cry out).”

¹ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (however) ἐπορεύθη (went) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) ἐλαιῶν (of Olives).

¹⁴ Εὑρὼν (Having found) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὀνάριον (a young donkey), ἐκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτό (it), καθώς (as) ἐστιν (it is) γεγραμμένον (written): ¹⁵ “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear), θυγάτηρ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεται (comes), καθήμενος (sitting) ἐπὶ (on) πῶλον (a colt) ὄνου (of a donkey).” ¹⁶ Ταῦτα (These things) οὐκ (not) ἔγνωσαν (knew) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τὸ (from the) πρῶτον (first), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτε (when) ἐδοξάσθη (was glorified) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τότε (then) ἐμνήσθησαν (they remembered) ὅτι (that) ταῦτα (these things) ἦν (were) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτῷ (Him) γεγραμμένα (written), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) ἐποίησαν (they had done) αὐτῷ (to Him). ¹⁷ Ἐμαρτύρει (Continued to bear witness) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτε (when) τὸν (-) Λάζαρον (Lazarus) ἐφώνησεν (He called) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) μνημείου (tomb) καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (raised) αὐτὸν (him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead). ¹⁸ διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also) ὑπήντησεν (met) αὐτῷ (Him) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤκουσαν (they heard) τοῦτο (this) αὐτὸν (of His) πεποιηκέναι (having done) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign). ¹⁹ Οἱ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees) εἶπαν (said) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτούς (themselves), “Θεωρεῖτε (You see) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ὠφελεῖτε (you gain) οὐδέν (nothing). ἴδε (Behold), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) ὀπίσω (after) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἀπῆλθεν (has gone).”

¹² Τότε (Then) ὑπέστρεψαν (they returned) εἰς (to) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem) ἀπὸ (from) ὄρους (the mount) τοῦ (-) καλουμένου (called) Ἐλαιῶνος (Olivet), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐγγὺς (near) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), σαββάτου (a Sabbath day’s) ἔχον (holding) ὁδόν (journey).

² λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πορεύεσθε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κώμην (village) τὴν (-) κατέναντι (in front) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) εὐθέως* (immediately) εὑρήσετε (you will find) ὄνον (a donkey) δεδεμένην (having been tied), καὶ (and) πῶλον (a colt) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her); λύσαντες (having untied them), ἀγάγετέ (bring them) μοι (to Me). ³ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμῖν (to you) εἴπῃ (says) τι (anything), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) ὅτι (that) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has). εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (then) ἀποστελεῖ (he will send) αὐτούς (them).”

³⁰ λέγων (saying), “Ὑπάγετε (Go) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κατέναντι (ahead) κώμην (village), ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) εἰσπορευόμενοι (entering) εὑρήσετε (you will find) πῶλον (a colt) δεδεμένον (having been tied), ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) πώποτε (ever yet) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐκάθισεν (has sat); καὶ (and) λύσαντες (having untied) αὐτὸν (it), ἀγάγετε (bring it). ³¹ καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐρωτᾷ (asks), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) λύετε (do you untie it)?’ οὕτως (thus) ἐρεῖτε (will you say), ‘Ὅτι (Because) Ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).’”

¹⁵ καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (he) ὑμῖν (you) δείξει (will show) ἀνάγαιον (an upper room) μέγα (large), ἐστρωμένον (having been furnished) ἕτοιμον (and ready). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖ (there) ἑτοιμάσατε (prepare) ἡμῖν (for us).”

²⁴ καὶ (And) προσευξάμενοι (having prayed), εἶπαν (they said), “Σὺ (You) Κύριε (Lord), καρδιογνῶστα (knower of the hearts) πάντων (of all), ἀνάδειξον (show) ὃν (which) ἐξελέξω (You have chosen) ἐκ (of) τούτων (these) τῶν (-) δύο (two), ἕνα (one)

³⁶ τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ὃν (that) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) τοῖς (to the) υἱοῖς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), εὐαγγελιζόμενος (proclaiming the gospel), εἰρήνην (peace) διὰ (by) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ)— οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) πάντων (of all) Κύριος (Lord).

²⁵ οὐδὲ (nor) ὑπὸ (by) χειρῶν (hands) ἀνθρωπίνων (of men) θεραπεύεται (is He served), προσδεόμενός (as needing) τινος (anything), αὐτὸς (Himself) διδοὺς (giving) πᾶσι (to all) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) πνοὴν (breath), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πάντα (all);

⁹ Γινώσκετε (You know) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὅτι (that) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπτώχευσεν (He became poor), πλούσιος (rich) ὤν (being), ἵνα (so that) ὑμεῖς (you) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (through that) πτωχείᾳ (poverty) πλουτήσητε (might be enriched).

⁷ ἠλάττωσας (You made lower) αὐτὸν (him) βραχύ (a little) τι (some) παρ’ (than) ἀγγέλους (the angels); δόξῃ (with glory) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (honor) ἐστεφάνωσας (You crowned) αὐτόν (him), ⁸ πάντα (all things) ὑπέταξας (You have put in subjection) ὑποκάτω (under) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of him). Ἐν (In) τῷ (-) γὰρ (for) ὑποτάξαι (subjecting) αὐτῷ (to him) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things), οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀφῆκεν (He left) αὐτῷ (to him) ἀνυπότακτον (unsubject). νῦν (At present) δὲ (however), οὔπω (not yet) ὁρῶμεν (do we see) αὐτῷ (to Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) ὑποτεταγμένα (having been subjected). ⁹ τὸν (Who) δὲ (however) βραχύ (a little) τι (one) παρ’ (than) ἀγγέλους (the angels), ἠλαττωμένον (having been made lower), βλέπομεν (we see), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), διὰ (because of) τὸ (the) πάθημα (suffering) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), δόξῃ (with glory) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (with honor) ἐστεφανωμένον (having been crowned), ὅπως (so that) χάριτι (by the grace) Θεοῦ (of God) ὑπὲρ (for) παντὸς (everyone) γεύσηται (He might taste) θανάτου (death).

⁶ Πορευθέντες (Having gone) δὲ (then) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) καὶ (and) ποιήσαντες (having done) καθὼς (as) συνέταξεν (commanded) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ⁷ ἤγαγον (they brought) τὴν (the) ὄνον (donkey) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), καὶ (and) ἐπέθηκαν (put) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (their) ἱμάτια (cloaks), καὶ (and) ἐπεκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπάνω (on) αὐτῶν (them).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἐποίησαν (did) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὡς (as) συνέταξεν (directed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἡτοίμασαν (prepared) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover).

³² Ἀπελθόντες (Having departed) δὲ (then), οἱ (those) ἀπεσταλμένοι (having been sent) εὗρον (found it) καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (He had said) αὐτοῖς (to them). ³³ λυόντων (On untying) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (of them) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) κύριοι (masters) αὐτοῦ (of it) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τί (Why) λύετε (untie you) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt)?” ³⁴ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) ὅτι (-), “Ὁ (The) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτοῦ (of it) χρείαν (need) ἔχει (has).”

⁵ Λέγει (Says) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τοῖς (to the) διακόνοις (servants), “Ὅ (Whatever) τι (anyhow) ἂν (-) λέγῃ (He may say) ὑμῖν (to you), ποιήσατε (do).”

⁸ Πίστει (By faith) καλούμενος (being called), Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὑπήκουσεν (obeyed) ἐξελθεῖν (to go out) εἰς (into) τόπον (a place) ὃν (that) ἤμελλεν (he was going) λαμβάνειν (to receive) εἰς (for) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out), μὴ (not) ἐπιστάμενος (knowing) ποῦ (where) ἔρχεται (he is going).

⁴ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (then) γέγονεν (came to pass) ἵνα (that) πληρωθῇ (it might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), ⁵ “Εἴπατε (Say) τῇ (to the) θυγατρὶ (daughter) Σιών (of Zion), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) Βασιλεύς (King) σου (of you) ἔρχεταί (comes) σοι (to you), πραῢς (gentle) καὶ (and) ἐπιβεβηκὼς (mounted) ἐπὶ (on) ὄνον (a donkey), καὶ (even) ἐπὶ (upon) πῶλον (a colt), υἱὸν (the foal) ὑποζυγίου (of a beast of burden).’”

⁷ ἤγαγον (they brought) τὴν (the) ὄνον (donkey) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), καὶ (and) ἐπέθηκαν (put) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτῶν (them) τὰ (their) ἱμάτια (cloaks), καὶ (and) ἐπεκάθισεν (He sat) ἐπάνω (on) αὐτῶν (them). ⁸ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) πλεῖστος (very great) ὄχλος (crowd) ἔστρωσαν (spread) ἑαυτῶν (their) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (cloaks) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) ἔκοπτον (were cutting down) κλάδους (branches) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) δένδρων (trees) καὶ (and) ἐστρώννυον (were spreading them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road).

³⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤγαγον (they led) αὐτὸν (it) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐπιρίψαντες (having cast) αὐτῶν (their) τὰ (-) ἱμάτια (garments) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) πῶλον (colt), ἐπεβίβασαν (they put on it) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ³⁶ Πορευομένου (Going) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὑπεστρώννυον (they were spreading) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) ἑαυτῶν (of them) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road).

⁹ Οἱ (The) δὲ (now) ὄχλοι (crowds) οἱ (-) προάγοντες (going before) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀκολουθοῦντες (following) ἔκραζον (were crying out), λέγοντες (saying): “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)!” “Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord)!” “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ὑψίστοις (highest)!”

³⁹ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μή (not) με (Me) ἴδητε (shall you see) ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ἕως (until) ἂν (-) εἴπητε (you say), ‘Εὐλογημένος (Blessed is) ὁ (the One) ἐρχόμενος (coming) ἐν (in the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).’”

¹⁵ Ἐκραύγασαν (They cried out) οὖν (therefore), “Ἐκεῖνοι (With Him) Ἆρον (away), ἆρον (away)! σταύρωσον (Crucify) αὐτόν (Him)!” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Τὸν (The) Βασιλέα (King) ὑμῶν (of you) σταυρώσω (shall I crucify)?” Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) βασιλέα (a king), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) Καίσαρα (Caesar).”

³¹ καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), συλλήμψῃ (you will conceive) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb), καὶ (and) τέξῃ (will bring forth) υἱόν (a son), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you shall call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). ³² οὗτος (He) ἔσται (will be) μέγας (great), καὶ (and) Υἱὸς (Son) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) κληθήσεται (He will be called); καὶ (and) δώσει (will give) αὐτῷ (Him) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) θρόνον (throne) Δαυὶδ (of David), τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ³³ καὶ (and) βασιλεύσει (He will reign) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ἰακὼβ (of Jacob) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages); καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐκ (not) ἔσται (there will be) τέλος (an end)!”

¹⁴ “Δόξα (Glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) εἰρήνη (peace) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) εὐδοκίας (with whom He is pleased)!”

¹⁰ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθόντος (having entered) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), ἐσείσθη (was stirred) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) πόλις (city), λέγουσα (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) οὗτος (this)?” ¹¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ὄχλοι (the crowds) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet), Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the One) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲθ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee).” ¹² Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλεν (cast out) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζοντας (buying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) κατέστρεψεν (He overturned), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) καθέδρας (seats) τῶν (of those) πωλούντων (selling) τὰς (the) περιστεράς (doves). ¹³ καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Ὁ (The) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer) κληθήσεται (will be called).’ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ποιεῖτε (have made) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’” ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) τυφλοὶ (blind) καὶ (and) χωλοὶ (lame) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them). ¹⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὰ (the) θαυμάσια (wonders) ἃ (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (children) τοὺς (the) κράζοντας (crying out) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) λέγοντας (saying), “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David),” ἠγανάκτησαν (they were indignant) ¹⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀκούεις (Hear you) τί (what) οὗτοι (these) λέγουσιν (say)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ναί (Yes), οὐδέποτε (never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you read) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐκ (Out of the) στόματος (mouth) νηπίων (of babes) καὶ (and) θηλαζόντων (sucklings), Κατηρτίσω (You have prepared for yourself) αἶνον (praise)’?” ¹⁷ Καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἐξῆλθεν (He went) ἔξω (out of) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany), καὶ (and) ηὐλίσθη (He passed the night) ἐκεῖ (there).

⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ὡς (as) ἤγγισεν (He drew near), ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἔκλαυσεν (He wept) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτήν (it), ⁴² λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Εἰ (If) ἔγνως (you had known) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (even) σὺ (you), τὰ (the things) πρὸς (for) εἰρήνην (peace)! νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἐκρύβη (they are hidden) ἀπὸ (from) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) σου (of you). ⁴³ ὅτι (For) ἥξουσιν (will come) ἡμέραι (days) ἐπὶ (upon) σὲ (you) καὶ (that) παρεμβαλοῦσιν (will cast around) οἱ (the) ἐχθροί (enemies) σου (of you) χάρακά (a barricade) σοι (you); καὶ (and) περικυκλώσουσίν (they will surround) σε (you) καὶ (and) συνέξουσίν (will hem in) σε (you) πάντοθεν (on every side), ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).” ⁴⁵ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), ἤρξατο (He began) ἐκβάλλειν (to cast out) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling),

³⁷ Ἦν (He was) δὲ (now) τὰς (during the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) διδάσκων (teaching), τὰς (-) δὲ (and) νύκτας (the evening) ἐξερχόμενος (going out), ηὐλίζετο (He was lodging) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mount) τὸ (-) καλούμενον (called) Ἐλαιῶν (Olivet). ³⁸ καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ὤρθριζεν (would come early in the morning) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἀκούειν (to hear) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δὲ (however) ἐπορεύθη (went) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὄρος (Mount) τῶν (-) ἐλαιῶν (of Olives). ² Ὄρθρου (Early in the morning) δὲ (then) πάλιν (again) παρεγένετο (He came) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἤρχετο (were coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him). καὶ (And) καθίσας (having sat down), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτούς (them).

² καὶ (And) νηστεύσας (having fasted) ἡμέρας (days) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) καὶ (and) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) νύκτας (nights), ὕστερον (afterward) ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry).

¹⁸ Πρωῒ (In the morning) δὲ (then), ἐπανάγων* (having come back) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), ἐπείνασεν (He became hungry). ¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (fig tree) μίαν (one) ἐπὶ (along) τῆς (the) ὁδοῦ (road), ἦλθεν (He came) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτήν (it) καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (found) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves) μόνον (only). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to it), “〈Οὐ〉 (Never) μηκέτι (no more) ἐκ (from) σοῦ (you) καρπὸς (fruit) γένηται (let there be), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” καὶ (And) ἐξηράνθη (withered) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἐθαύμασαν (marveled), λέγοντες (saying), “Πῶς (How) παραχρῆμα (so quickly) ἐξηράνθη (withered) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree)?” ²¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) διακριθῆτε (do doubt), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τὸ (the miracle) τῆς (of the) συκῆς (fig tree) ποιήσετε (will you do), ἀλλὰ (but) κἂν (even if) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this) εἴπητε (you should say), ‘Ἄρθητι (Be you taken away) καὶ (and) βλήθητι (be you cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea),’ γενήσεται (it will come to pass). ²² καὶ (And) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (prayer), πιστεύοντες (believing), λήμψεσθε (you will receive).”

² ἡμέρας (days) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) πειραζόμενος (being tempted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil). Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔφαγεν (He ate) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those), καὶ (and) συντελεσθεισῶν (having ended) αὐτῶν (they), ἐπείνασεν (He was hungry).

⁶ ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ἐκεῖ (there) πηγὴ (the well) τοῦ (-) Ἰακώβ (of Jacob). ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), κεκοπιακὼς (being wearied) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ὁδοιπορίας (journey), ἐκαθέζετο (was sitting) οὕτως (thus) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) πηγῇ (well). ὥρα (The hour) ἦν (was) ὡς (about) ἕκτη (the sixth). ⁷ Ἔρχεται (Comes) γυνὴ (a woman) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (-) Σαμαρείας (Samaria) ἀντλῆσαι (to draw) ὕδωρ (water). λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Δός (Give) μοι (Me) πεῖν (to drink).”

³¹ Ἐν (But in) τῷ (the) μεταξὺ (meantime) ἠρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), φάγε (eat).” ³² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐγὼ (I) βρῶσιν (food) ἔχω (have) φαγεῖν (to eat) ἣν (that) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know).” ³³ Ἔλεγον (Were saying) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) πρὸς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), “Μή (No) τις (one) ἤνεγκεν (did bring) αὐτῷ (Him) φαγεῖν (anything to eat)?”

²⁸ Μετὰ (After) τοῦτο (this), εἰδὼς (knowing) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἤδη (now) πάντα (all things) τετέλεσται (had been accomplished), ἵνα (so that) τελειωθῇ (might be fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture), λέγει (He says), “Διψῶ (I thirst).”

¹⁷ ὅθεν (Therefore) ὤφειλεν (it behooved Him) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) τοῖς (His) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers) ὁμοιωθῆναι (to be made like), ἵνα (so that) ἐλεήμων (a merciful) γένηται (He might become), καὶ (and) πιστὸς (faithful), ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) τὰ (in things) πρὸς (relating to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ἱλάσκεσθαι (to make propitiation for) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἰδὼν (having seen) συκῆν (fig tree) μίαν (one) ἐπὶ (along) τῆς (the) ὁδοῦ (road), ἦλθεν (He came) ἐπ’ (to) αὐτήν (it) καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing) εὗρεν (found) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) φύλλα (leaves) μόνον (only). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτῇ (to it), “〈Οὐ〉 (Never) μηκέτι (no more) ἐκ (from) σοῦ (you) καρπὸς (fruit) γένηται (let there be), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” καὶ (And) ἐξηράνθη (withered) παραχρῆμα (immediately) ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree).

³¹ Κατὰ (By) συγκυρίαν (chance) δὲ (now) ἱερεύς (a priest) τις (certain) κατέβαινεν (was going down) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) αὐτὸν (him) ἀντιπαρῆλθεν (he passed by on the opposite side).

⁶ Οὐχὶ (Not) πέντε (five) στρουθία (sparrows) πωλοῦνται (are sold for) ἀσσαρίων (assarion) δύο (two)? καὶ (And) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐπιλελησμένον (forgotten) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). ⁷ ἀλλὰ (But) καὶ (even) αἱ (the) τρίχες (hairs) τῆς (of the) κεφαλῆς (head) ὑμῶν (of you) πᾶσαι (all) ἠρίθμηνται (have been numbered). μὴ (Not) φοβεῖσθε (fear), πολλῶν (than many) στρουθίων (sparrows) διαφέρετε (you are more valuable).

⁶ Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) παραβολήν (parable): “Συκῆν (A fig tree) εἶχέν (had) τις (a certain man) πεφυτευμένην (planted) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀμπελῶνι (vineyard) αὐτοῦ (of him); καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (he came) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) αὐτῇ (it), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὗρεν (did find any). ⁷ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ἀμπελουργόν (vinedresser), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τρία (three) ἔτη (years) ἀφ’ (throughout) οὗ (these) ἔρχομαι (I come) ζητῶν (seeking) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) συκῇ (fig tree) ταύτῃ (this), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) εὑρίσκω (do find any). ἔκκοψον (Cut down) [οὖν] (therefore) αὐτήν (it), ἵνα‿ (that) τί (why) καὶ (even) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground) καταργεῖ (should it use up)?’ ⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), λέγει (he says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Κύριε (Sir), ἄφες (let alone) αὐτὴν (it) καὶ (also) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (the) ἔτος (year), ἕως (until) ὅτου (when) σκάψω (I shall dig) περὶ (around) αὐτὴν (it), καὶ (and) βάλω (put in) κόπρια (manure), ⁹ κἂν (and if) μὲν (indeed) ποιήσῃ (it should bear) καρπὸν (fruit) εἰς (in) τὸ (the time), μέλλον (so be it). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) μή¦γε (not), ἐκκόψεις (you will cut down) αὐτήν (it).’”

¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

¹⁹ πᾶν (Every) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).

³³ Ἢ (Either) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) καλὸν (good) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) καλόν (good), ἢ (or) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) σαπρὸν (bad) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) σαπρόν (bad); ἐκ (by) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) καρποῦ (fruit), τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) γινώσκεται (is known). ³⁴ γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), πῶς (how) δύνασθε (are you able) ἀγαθὰ (good things) λαλεῖν (to speak), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being)? ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) περισσεύματος (abundance) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart), τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) λαλεῖ (speaks). ³⁵ ὁ (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἀγαθά (good things); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) πονηροῦ (evil) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) πονηρά (evil things).

³³ Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) ἀκούσατε (hear): Ἄνθρωπος (A man) ἦν (there was), οἰκοδεσπότης (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐφύτευσεν (planted) ἀμπελῶνα (a vineyard), καὶ (and) φραγμὸν (a fence) αὐτῷ (it) περιέθηκεν (placed around), καὶ (and) ὤρυξεν (dug) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (it) ληνὸν (a winepress), καὶ (and) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) πύργον (a tower), καὶ (and) ἐξέδετο (rented out) αὐτὸν (it) γεωργοῖς (to farmers), καὶ (and) ἀπεδήμησεν (traveled abroad).

⁴⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) τοῦτον (this) συνθλασθήσεται (will be broken); ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (whomever) δ’ (but) ἂν (-) πέσῃ (it shall fall), λικμήσει (it will grind to powder) αὐτόν (him).”

²⁰ Καὶ (And) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) πρωῒ (in the morning), εἶδον (they saw) τὴν (the) συκῆν (fig tree) ἐξηραμμένην (having been dried up) ἐκ (from the) ῥιζῶν (roots). ²¹ καὶ (And) ἀναμνησθεὶς (having remembered), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ἴδε (look), ἡ (the) συκῆ (fig tree) ἣν (that) κατηράσω (You cursed) ἐξήρανται (is dried up).”

⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned).

²⁰ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τὰ (the) μιάσματα (pollutions) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐν (through) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τούτοις (in these) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) ἐμπλακέντες (having been entangled) ἡττῶνται (they are subdued), γέγονεν (has become) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last state) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first).

¹¹ ὁ (The one) ἀδικῶν (being unrighteous), ἀδικησάτω (let him be unrighteous) ἔτι (still); καὶ (and) ὁ (he who) ῥυπαρὸς (is filthy), ῥυπανθήτω (let him be filthy) ἔτι (still); καὶ (and) ὁ (he who) δίκαιος (is righteous), δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) ποιησάτω (let him practice) ἔτι (still); καὶ (and) ὁ (he who is) ἅγιος (holy), ἁγιασθήτω (let him be holy) ἔτι (still).”

¹² Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐξέβαλεν (cast out) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζοντας (buying) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) κατέστρεψεν (He overturned), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) καθέδρας (seats) τῶν (of those) πωλούντων (selling) τὰς (the) περιστεράς (doves). ¹³ καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Ὁ (The) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer) κληθήσεται (will be called).’ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ποιεῖτε (have made) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’” ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) τυφλοὶ (blind) καὶ (and) χωλοὶ (lame) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them). ¹⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὰ (the) θαυμάσια (wonders) ἃ (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (children) τοὺς (the) κράζοντας (crying out) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) λέγοντας (saying), “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David),” ἠγανάκτησαν (they were indignant) ¹⁶ καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἀκούεις (Hear you) τί (what) οὗτοι (these) λέγουσιν (say)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ναί (Yes), οὐδέποτε (never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you read) ὅτι (-): ‘Ἐκ (Out of the) στόματος (mouth) νηπίων (of babes) καὶ (and) θηλαζόντων (sucklings), Κατηρτίσω (You have prepared for yourself) αἶνον (praise)’?”

⁴⁵ Καὶ (And) εἰσελθὼν (having entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), ἤρξατο (He began) ἐκβάλλειν (to cast out) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling), ⁴⁶ λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Καὶ (And) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer).’ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ἐποιήσατε (have made) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’” ⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) διδάσκων (teaching) τὸ (-) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple); οἱ (the) δὲ (however) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (foremost) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).

¹³ Καὶ (And) ἐγγὺς (near) ἦν (was) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), καὶ (and) ἀνέβη (went up) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) εὗρεν (He found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling) βόας (oxen) καὶ (and) πρόβατα (sheep) καὶ (and) περιστερὰς (doves), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) κερματιστὰς (money changers) καθημένους (sitting). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ποιήσας (having made) φραγέλλιον (a whip) ἐκ (of) σχοινίων (cords), πάντας (all) ἐξέβαλεν (He drove out) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple), τά (-) τε (both) πρόβατα (sheep) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) βόας (oxen); καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) κολλυβιστῶν (money changers) ἐξέχεεν (He poured out) τὰ (the) κέρματα (coins), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) τραπέζας (tables) ἀνέτρεψεν (He overthrew). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) τοῖς (to those) τὰς (-) περιστερὰς (doves) πωλοῦσιν (selling) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἄρατε (Take) ταῦτα (these things) ἐντεῦθεν (from here); μὴ (not) ποιεῖτε (make) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) οἶκον (a house) ἐμπορίου (of trade).” ¹⁷ Ἐμνήσθησαν (Remembered) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (that) γεγραμμένον (written) ἐστίν (it is): “Ὁ (The) ζῆλος (zeal) τοῦ (of the) οἴκου (house) σου (of You) καταφάγεταί (will consume) με (Me).”

⁴⁶ λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γέγραπται (It has been written): ‘Καὶ (And) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) οἶκός (house) μου (of Me) οἶκος (a house) προσευχῆς (of prayer).’ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (it) ἐποιήσατε (have made) ‘Σπήλαιον (a den) λῃστῶν (of robbers).’”

¹⁶ καὶ (And) τοῖς (to those) τὰς (-) περιστερὰς (doves) πωλοῦσιν (selling) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἄρατε (Take) ταῦτα (these things) ἐντεῦθεν (from here); μὴ (not) ποιεῖτε (make) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) οἶκον (a house) ἐμπορίου (of trade).”

²⁸ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), ἐξεπλήσσοντο (were astonished) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁵ ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὰ (the) θαυμάσια (wonders) ἃ (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (children) τοὺς (the) κράζοντας (crying out) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) λέγοντας (saying), “Ὡσαννὰ (Hosanna) τῷ (to the) υἱῷ (Son) Δαυίδ (of David),” ἠγανάκτησαν (they were indignant)

³⁸ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) γεωργοὶ (the farmers) ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son), εἶπον (said) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ‘Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κληρονόμος (heir); δεῦτε (come), ἀποκτείνωμεν (let us kill) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) σχῶμεν (gain possession of) τὴν (the) κληρονομίαν (inheritance) αὐτοῦ (of him).’ ³⁹ καὶ (And) λαβόντες (having taking) αὐτὸν (him), ἐξέβαλον (they cast him) ἔξω (out of) τοῦ (the) ἀμπελῶνος (vineyard) καὶ (and) ἀπέκτειναν (killed him).

⁴⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔγνωσαν (they knew) ὅτι (that) περὶ (about) αὐτῶν (them) λέγει (He speaks). ⁴⁶ καὶ (And) ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπεὶ (because) εἰς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶχον (they were holding).

³ Τότε (Then) συνήχθησαν (were gathered together) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) αὐλὴν (courtyard) τοῦ (of the) ἀρχιερέως (high priest), τοῦ (who) λεγομένου (is called) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas), ⁴ καὶ (and) συνεβουλεύσαντο (they plotted together), ἵνα (in order that) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) δόλῳ (by guile) κρατήσωσιν (they might seize) καὶ (and) ἀποκτείνωσιν (kill).

²² καὶ (And) ἐξεπλήσσοντο (they were astonished) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) διδαχῇ (teaching) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ἦν (He was) γὰρ (for) διδάσκων (teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ὡς (as) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχων (having), καὶ (and) οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes).

⁶ Καὶ (And) ἐξελθόντες (having gone out), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) Ἡρῳδιανῶν (Herodians) συμβούλιον (counsel) ἐδίδουν (began to take) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅπως (how) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσωσιν (they might destroy).

²⁰ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ἐφοβεῖτο (was afraid of) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτὸν (him) ἄνδρα (to be a man) δίκαιον (righteous) καὶ (and) ἅγιον (holy); καὶ (and) συνετήρει (he kept safe) αὐτόν (him). καὶ (And) ἀκούσας (having heard) αὐτοῦ (him), πολλὰ (greatly) ἠπόρει (he was perplexed) καὶ (and) ἡδέως (gladly) αὐτοῦ (him) ἤκουεν (heard).

³² ἀλλὰ (But) εἴπωμεν (should we say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men)’...” ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid of) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (people); ἅπαντες (all) γὰρ (for) εἶχον (were holding) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ὄντως (truly) ὅτι (that) προφήτης (a prophet) ἦν (he was).

¹² Καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (they were seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd); ἔγνωσαν (they knew) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πρὸς (against) αὐτοὺς (them) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) εἶπεν (He had spoken). καὶ (And) ἀφέντες (having left) αὐτὸν (Him), ἀπῆλθον (they went away).

¹ Ἦν (It would be) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἄζυμα (Feast of Unleavened Bread), μετὰ (after) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days). καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) πῶς (how), αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (by) δόλῳ (stealth) κρατήσαντες (having taken), ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill Him). ² ἔλεγον (They were saying) γάρ (for), “Μὴ (Not) ἐν (during) τῇ (the) ἑορτῇ (feast), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) ἔσται (there will be) θόρυβος (an uproar) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).”

²² Καὶ (And) πάντες (all) ἐμαρτύρουν (were bearing witness) αὐτῷ (to Him) καὶ (and) ἐθαύμαζον (marveling) ἐπὶ (at) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῖς (that) ἐκπορευομένοις (are proceeding) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (they were saying), “Οὐχὶ (Not) υἱός (the son) ἐστιν (is) Ἰωσὴφ (of Joseph) οὗτος (this)?”

⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ἦν (He was) διδάσκων (teaching) τὸ (-) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple); οἱ (the) δὲ (however) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρῶτοι (foremost) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people).

¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐζήτησαν (sought) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) ἐπιβαλεῖν (to lay) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰς (-) χεῖρας (hands) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour); καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τὸν (the) λαόν (people); ἔγνωσαν (they perceived) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) πρὸς (against) αὐτοὺς (them) εἶπεν (He was speaking) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this).

⁴⁶ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) ὑπηρέται (officers), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) οὕτως (like this) ἄνθρωπος (a man), 〈ὡς (as) οὗτος (this) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὁ (-) ἄνθρωπος〉 (man).”

⁵³ Ἀπ’ (From) ἐκείνης (that) οὖν (therefore) τῆς (-) ἡμέρας (day) ἐβουλεύσαντο (they took counsel together) ἵνα (that) ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill) αὐτόν (Him). ⁵⁴ Ὁ (-) οὖν (Therefore) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) παρρησίᾳ (publicly) περιεπάτει (walked) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χώραν (region) ἐγγὺς (near) τῆς (the) ἐρήμου (wilderness), εἰς (to) Ἐφραὶμ (Ephraim) λεγομένην (called) πόλιν (a city). κἀκεῖ (And there) ἔμεινεν (He stayed) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples). ⁵⁵ Ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ἐγγὺς (near) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), καὶ (and) ἀνέβησαν (went up) πολλοὶ (many) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χώρας (region) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (the) πάσχα (Passover), ἵνα (so that) ἁγνίσωσιν (they might purify) ἑαυτούς (themselves). ⁵⁶ ἐζήτουν (They were seeking) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) μετ’ (among) ἀλλήλων (one another) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἑστηκότες (standing), “Τί (What) δοκεῖ (does it seem) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἔλθῃ (He will come) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἑορτήν (feast)?” ⁵⁷ δεδώκεισαν (Had given) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) ἐντολὰς (a command) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) γνῷ (should know) ποῦ (where) ἐστιν (He is), μηνύσῃ (he should show it), ὅπως (so that) πιάσωσιν (they might seize) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁵ διαλεγομένου (Reasoning) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) περὶ (concerning) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἐγκρατείας (self-control) καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) κρίματος (judgment) τοῦ (-) μέλλοντος (coming), ἔμφοβος (frightened) γενόμενος (having become), ὁ (-) Φῆλιξ (Felix) ἀπεκρίθη (answered), “Τὸ (For the) νῦν (present) ἔχον (being) πορεύου (go away); καιρὸν (opportunity) δὲ (then) μεταλαβὼν (having found), μετακαλέσομαί (I will call for) σε (you).”

⁵ καὶ (And) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) αὐτοὺς (them) θέλει (should desire) ἀδικῆσαι (to harm), πῦρ (fire) ἐκπορεύεται (goes out) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) κατεσθίει (devours) τοὺς (the) ἐχθροὺς (enemies) αὐτῶν (of them). καὶ (And) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) θελήσῃ (should desire) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀδικῆσαι (to harm), οὕτως (thus) δεῖ (it is necessary) αὐτὸν (for him) ἀποκτανθῆναι (to be killed). ⁶ οὗτοι (These) ἔχουσιν (have) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (power) κλεῖσαι (to shut) τὸν (the) οὐρανόν (sky), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (no) ὑετὸς (rain) βρέχῃ (shall fall) τὰς (in the) ἡμέρας (days) τῆς (of the) προφητείας (prophecy) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (power) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἐπὶ (over) τῶν (the) ὑδάτων (waters), στρέφειν (to turn) αὐτὰ (them) εἰς (into) αἷμα (blood), καὶ (and) πατάξαι (to strike) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (every) πληγῇ (plague), ὁσάκις (as often as) ἐὰν (if) θελήσωσιν (they might desire). ⁷ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) τελέσωσιν (they shall have completed) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them), τὸ (the) θηρίον (beast) τὸ (-) ἀναβαῖνον (coming up) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ἀβύσσου (abyss) ποιήσει (will make) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them) πόλεμον (war), καὶ (and) νικήσει (will overcome) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) ἀποκτενεῖ (will kill) αὐτούς (them). ⁸ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπὶ (will be upon) τῆς (the) πλατείας (street) τῆς (of) πόλεως (city) τῆς (the) μεγάλης (great), ἥτις (which) καλεῖται (is called) πνευματικῶς (figuratively) Σόδομα (Sodom) καὶ (and) Αἴγυπτος (Egypt), ὅπου (where) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐσταυρώθη (was crucified). ⁹ καὶ (And) βλέπουσιν (gaze) ἐκ (those of) τῶν (the) λαῶν (peoples) καὶ (and) φυλῶν (tribes) καὶ (and) γλωσσῶν (tongues) καὶ (and) ἐθνῶν (nations) τὸ (upon the) πτῶμα (bodies) αὐτῶν (of them), ἡμέρας (days) τρεῖς (three) καὶ (and) ἥμισυ (a half), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πτώματα (bodies) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐκ (not) ἀφίουσιν (they will allow) τεθῆναι (to be put) εἰς (into) μνῆμα (a tomb). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) οἱ (those) κατοικοῦντες (dwelling) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) χαίρουσιν (rejoice) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) εὐφραίνονται (make merry), καὶ (and) δῶρα (gifts) πέμψουσιν (will send) ἀλλήλοις (to one another), ὅτι (because) οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) δύο (two) προφῆται (prophets) ἐβασάνισαν (have tormented) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) εἰς (into) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερόν (temple), καὶ (and) περιβλεψάμενος (having looked around on) πάντα (all things), ὀψὲ (late) ἤδη (already) οὔσης (being) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour), ἐξῆλθεν (He went out) εἰς (to) Βηθανίαν (Bethany) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δώδεκα (Twelve).

³⁷ Ἦν (He was) δὲ (now) τὰς (during the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) διδάσκων (teaching), τὰς (-) δὲ (and) νύκτας (the evening) ἐξερχόμενος (going out), ηὐλίζετο (He was lodging) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mount) τὸ (-) καλούμενον (called) Ἐλαιῶν (Olivet).

³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

⁶ ἡλίου (the sun) δὲ (now) ἀνατείλαντος (having risen), ἐκαυματίσθη (they were scorched), καὶ (and) διὰ (through) τὸ (the) μὴ (not) ἔχειν (having) ῥίζαν (root), ἐξηράνθη (were dried up).

¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (has planted) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly), ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be rooted up).

¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to it), “Μηκέτι (No more) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), ἐκ (of) σοῦ (you) μηδεὶς (no one) καρπὸν (fruit) φάγοι (may eat).” καὶ (And) ἤκουον (were listening) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁸ ἐκφέρουσα (That bringing forth) δὲ (however) ἀκάνθας (thorns) καὶ (and) τριβόλους (thistles) ἀδόκιμος (is worthless) καὶ (and) κατάρας (a curse) ἐγγύς (near to), ἧς (of which) τὸ (the) τέλος (end is) εἰς (unto) καῦσιν (burning).

¹² Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the ones) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγάπαις (love feasts) ὑμῶν (of you), σπιλάδες (hidden reefs), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting together with you) ἀφόβως (fearlessly), ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) ποιμαίνοντες (shepherding); νεφέλαι (clouds) ἄνυδροι (without water), ὑπὸ (by) ἀνέμων (winds) παραφερόμεναι (being carried about); δένδρα (trees) φθινοπωρινὰ (autumnal) ἄκαρπα (without fruit), δὶς (twice) ἀποθανόντα (having died), ἐκριζωθέντα (having been uprooted);

⁷ καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi).’

⁴¹ Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²² Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) οὐ (not) φιλεῖ (loves) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), ἤτω (let him be) ἀνάθεμα (accursed). Μαράνα* (Marana) θά* (tha)!

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τὸ (-) Εἰ (If) δύνῃ (You are able)? πάντα (All things) δυνατὰ (are possible) τῷ (to the one) πιστεύοντι (believing).”

¹ Μὴ (Not) ταρασσέσθω (let be troubled) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart). πιστεύετε (You believe) εἰς (in) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καὶ (also) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me) πιστεύετε (believe).

¹² συνταφέντες (having been buried with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) βαπτισμῷ* (baptism), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) συνηγέρθητε (you were raised with Him) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) τῆς (of the) ἐνεργείας (working) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).

¹³ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) ἐν (by) πλοίῳ (boat) εἰς (to) ἔρημον (a secluded) τόπον (place) κατ’ (apart) ἰδίαν (Himself). καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard of it), οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) πεζῇ (on foot) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πόλεων (towns).

²⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) λέγει (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τὴν (the) ὀλιγοπιστίαν (little faith) ὑμῶν (of you). ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (If) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (as) κόκκον (a seed) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (to this), ‘Μετάβα (Move) ἔνθεν (from here) ἐκεῖ (to there),’ καὶ (and) μεταβήσεται (it will move). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) ὑμῖν (for you).”

²¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) διακριθῆτε (do doubt), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τὸ (the miracle) τῆς (of the) συκῆς (fig tree) ποιήσετε (will you do), ἀλλὰ (but) κἂν (even if) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (this) εἴπητε (you should say), ‘Ἄρθητι (Be you taken away) καὶ (and) βλήθητι (be you cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea),’ γενήσεται (it will come to pass).

⁶ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Εἰ (If) ἔχετε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (like) κόκκον (a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐλέγετε (you would have said) ἂν (-) τῇ (to the) συκαμίνῳ (mulberry tree) ταύτῃ (this), ‘Ἐκριζώθητι (Be uprooted) καὶ (and) φυτεύθητι (be planted) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θαλάσσῃ (sea),’ καὶ (and) ὑπήκουσεν (it would have obeyed) ἂν (-) ὑμῖν (you).

¹³ καὶ (And) ὅ¦τι (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), τοῦτο (this) ποιήσω (will I do), ἵνα (so that) δοξασθῇ (may be glorified) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son).

⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you).

¹⁸ ὃς (who) παρ’ (against) ἐλπίδα (hope), ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) ἐπίστευσεν (believed), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to become) αὐτὸν (him) πατέρα (the father) πολλῶν (of many) ἐθνῶν (nations), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) εἰρημένον (having been spoken), “Οὕτως (So) ἔσται (shall be) τὸ (the) σπέρμα (offspring) σου (of you).” ¹⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) ἀσθενήσας (having become weak) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), κατενόησεν (he considered) τὸ (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σῶμα (the body) [ἤδη] (already) νενεκρωμένον (having become dead), ἑκατονταετής (a hundred years old) που (about) ὑπάρχων (being), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (lifelessness) τῆς (of the) μήτρας (womb) Σάρρας (of Sarah). ²⁰ εἰς (At) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐ (not) διεκρίθη (he did waver) τῇ (-) ἀπιστίᾳ (through unbelief), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐνεδυναμώθη (was strengthened) τῇ (-) πίστει (in faith), δοὺς (having given) δόξαν (glory) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ²¹ καὶ (and) πληροφορηθεὶς (having been fully assured) ὅτι (that) ὃ (what) ἐπήγγελται (He had promised), δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (also) ποιῆσαι (to do). ²² διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) “Ἐλογίσθη (it was credited) αὐτῷ (to him) εἰς (unto) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness).” ²³ Οὐκ (Not) ἐγράφη (it was written) δὲ (now) δι’ (on account of) αὐτὸν (him) μόνον (alone) ὅτι (that) “Ἐλογίσθη (it was credited) αὐτῷ (to him),” ²⁴ ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) δι’ (on account of) ἡμᾶς (us), οἷς (to whom) μέλλει (it is about) λογίζεσθαι (to be credited), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the One) ἐγείραντα (having raised) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ²⁵ ὃς (who) παρεδόθη (was delivered over) διὰ (for) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἠγέρθη (was raised) διὰ (for) τὴν (the) δικαίωσιν (justification) ἡμῶν (of us).

² καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἔχω (I should have) προφητείαν (prophecy) καὶ (and) εἰδῶ (understand) τὰ (the) μυστήρια (mysteries) πάντα (all), καὶ (and) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) γνῶσιν (knowledge), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ἔχω (I should have) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith), ὥστε (so as) ὄρη (mountains) μεθιστάναι (to remove), ἀγάπην (love) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχω (have), οὐθέν (nothing) εἰμι (I am).

¹⁷ Πίστει (By faith) προσενήνοχεν (has offered up) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) τὸν (-) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac). πειραζόμενος (Being tested), καὶ (even) τὸν (his) μονογενῆ (only begotten son) προσέφερεν (was offering up) ὁ (the one) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises) ἀναδεξάμενος (having received), ¹⁸ πρὸς (as to) ὃν (whom) ἐλαλήθη (it was said) ὅτι (-), “Ἐν (In) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) κληθήσεταί (will be reckoned) σοι (your) σπέρμα (offspring),” ¹⁹ λογισάμενος (having reasoned) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγείρειν (to raise), δυνατὸς (able was) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὅθεν (from where) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παραβολῇ (a simile), ἐκομίσατο (he received).

⁵ Εἰ (If) δέ (now) τις (any) ὑμῶν (of you) λείπεται (lacks) σοφίας (wisdom), αἰτείτω (let him ask) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the One) διδόντος (giving), Θεοῦ (God), πᾶσιν (to all) ἁπλῶς (generously), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὀνειδίζοντος (finding fault), καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) αὐτῷ (to him). ⁶ αἰτείτω (Let him ask) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith), μηδὲν (nothing) διακρινόμενος (doubting). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) διακρινόμενος (doubting) ἔοικεν (is like) κλύδωνι (a wave) θαλάσσης (of the sea), ἀνεμιζομένῳ (being blown by the wind) καὶ (and) ῥιπιζομένῳ (being tossed by the wind).

⁷ Αἰτεῖτε (Ask) καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) ὑμῖν (to you); ζητεῖτε (seek) καὶ (and) εὑρήσετε (you will find); κρούετε (knock) καὶ (and) ἀνοιγήσεται (it will be opened) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁸ πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) αἰτῶν (asking) λαμβάνει (receives); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ζητῶν (seeking), εὑρίσκει (finds); καὶ (and) τῷ (to the one) κρούοντι (knocking), ἀνοιγήσεται (it will be opened). ⁹ Ἢ (Or) τίς (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ὃν (whom) αἰτήσει (will ask for) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἄρτον (bread), μὴ (not) λίθον (a stone) ἐπιδώσει (will he give) αὐτῷ (him)? ¹⁰ ἢ (Or) καὶ (also) ἰχθὺν (a fish) αἰτήσει (he will ask for), μὴ (not) ὄφιν (a serpent) ἐπιδώσει (will he give) αὐτῷ (him)? ¹¹ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ὑμεῖς (you), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being), οἴδατε (know) δόματα (gifts) ἀγαθὰ (good) διδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens) δώσει (will give) ἀγαθὰ (good things) τοῖς (to those) αἰτοῦσιν (asking) αὐτόν (Him)!

¹⁹ Πάλιν (Again) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) δύο (two) συμφωνήσωσιν (might agree) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) περὶ (concerning) παντὸς (any) πράγματος (matter), οὗ (that) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσωνται (they shall ask), γενήσεται (it will be done) αὐτοῖς (for them) παρὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens).

²² καὶ (And) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) προσευχῇ (prayer), πιστεύοντες (believing), λήμψεσθε (you will receive).”

⁹ Κἀγὼ (And I) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (say), αἰτεῖτε (ask) καὶ (and) δοθήσεται (it will be given) ὑμῖν (to you); ζητεῖτε (seek) καὶ (and) εὑρήσετε (you will find); κρούετε (knock) καὶ (and) ἀνοιγήσεται (it will be opened) ὑμῖν (to you). ¹⁰ πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) αἰτῶν (asking) λαμβάνει (receives); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ζητῶν (seeking) εὑρίσκει (finds); καὶ (and) τῷ (to the one) κρούοντι (knocking), ἀνοιγήσεται (it will be opened). ¹¹ Τίνα (Which) δὲ (now) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) τὸν (who is) πατέρα (a father), αἰτήσει (will ask for) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) ἰχθύν (a fish), καὶ* (and) ἀντὶ (instead of) ἰχθύος (a fish), ὄφιν (a serpent) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐπιδώσει (will he give)? ¹² ἢ (Or) καὶ (also) αἰτήσει (if he will ask for) ᾠόν (an egg), ἐπιδώσει (will he give) αὐτῷ (to him) σκορπίον (a scorpion)? ¹³ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ὑμεῖς (you), πονηροὶ (evil) ὑπάρχοντες (being), οἴδατε (know) δόματα (gifts) ἀγαθὰ (good) διδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὁ (who is) ἐξ (in) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) δώσει (will give) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Ἅγιον (Holy) τοῖς (to those) αἰτοῦσιν (asking) αὐτόν (Him)!”

¹ Ἔλεγεν (He was speaking) δὲ (then) παραβολὴν (a parable) αὐτοῖς (to them) πρὸς (about) τὸ (the way) δεῖν (it behooves) πάντοτε (always) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray) αὐτοὺς (them) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐνκακεῖν (to lose heart), ² λέγων (saying), “Κριτής (A judge) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) ἔν (in) τινι (a certain) πόλει (city), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) μὴ (not) φοβούμενος (fearing) καὶ (and) ἄνθρωπον (man) μὴ (not) ἐντρεπόμενος (respecting). ³ χήρα (A widow) δὲ (then) ἦν (there was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ἐκείνῃ (that), καὶ (and) ἤρχετο (she was coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him), λέγουσα (saying), ‘Ἐκδίκησόν (Avenge) με (me) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) ἀντιδίκου (adversary) μου (of me).’ ⁴ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he would) ἐπὶ (for) χρόνον (a time); μετὰ (afterward) ταῦτα (he) δὲ (however) εἶπεν (said) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), ‘Εἰ (If) καὶ (even) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) οὐ (not) φοβοῦμαι (I fear), οὐδὲ (nor) ἄνθρωπον (man) ἐντρέπομαι (respect), ⁵ διά (because) γε (yet) τὸ (-) παρέχειν (causes) μοι (me) κόπον (trouble) τὴν (the) χήραν (widow) ταύτην (this), ἐκδικήσω (I will avenge) αὐτήν (her), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τέλος (end) ἐρχομένη (coming), ὑπωπιάζῃ (she exhaust) με (me).’” ⁶ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Ἀκούσατε (Hear) τί (what) ὁ (the) κριτὴς (judge) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (unrighteous) λέγει (says). ⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Θεὸς (God) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ποιήσῃ (shall execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) τῶν (of the) ἐκλεκτῶν (elect) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τῶν (the ones) βοώντων (crying out) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡμέρας (day) καὶ (and) νυκτός (night), καὶ (and) μακροθυμεῖ (be deferring) ἐπ’ (in regard to) αὐτοῖς (them)? ⁸ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ποιήσει (He will execute) τὴν (the) ἐκδίκησιν (avenging) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) τάχει (quickness). πλὴν (Nevertheless), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἆρα (indeed) εὑρήσει (will He find) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth)?”

²³ Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ἐμὲ (of Me) οὐκ (not) ἐρωτήσετε (you will ask) οὐδέν (nothing). ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἄν (-) τι (whatever) αἰτήσητε (you may ask), τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) «δώσει (He will give) ὑμῖν» (you), «ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου» (of Me). ²⁴ ἕως (Until) ἄρτι (now) οὐκ (not) ᾐτήσατε (you have asked) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me). αἰτεῖτε (Ask) καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾖ (may be) πεπληρωμένη (full). ²⁵ Ταῦτα (These things) ἐν (in) παροιμίαις (allegories) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you); ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ὅτε (when) οὐκέτι (no more) ἐν (in) παροιμίαις (allegories) λαλήσω (I will speak) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀλλὰ (but) παρρησίᾳ (plainly) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἀπαγγελῶ (I will report) ὑμῖν (to you). ²⁶ ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me) αἰτήσεσθε (you will ask), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἐρωτήσω (will implore) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) περὶ (for) ὑμῶν (you). ²⁷ αὐτὸς (Himself) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) φιλεῖ (loves) ὑμᾶς (you), ὅτι (because) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐμὲ (Me) πεφιλήκατε (have loved) καὶ (and) πεπιστεύκατε (have believed) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐξῆλθον (came forth).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) εὐχὴ (prayer) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith) σώσει (will save) τὸν (the one) κάμνοντα (ailing), καὶ (and) ἐγερεῖ (will raise up) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), κἂν (and if) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ᾖ (he might be one) πεποιηκώς (having committed), ἀφεθήσεται (it will be forgiven) αὐτῷ (him). ¹⁶ Ἐξομολογεῖσθε (Confess) οὖν (therefore) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) εὔχεσθε* (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὅπως (so that) ἰαθῆτε (you may be healed). πολὺ (Much) ἰσχύει (prevails) δέησις (the prayer) δικαίου (of a righteous man) ἐνεργουμένη (being made effective). ¹⁷ Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἦν (was) ὁμοιοπαθὴς (of like nature) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) προσευχῇ (with fervent prayer) προσηύξατο (he prayed for it) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βρέξαι (to rain), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔβρεξεν (it did rain) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἐνιαυτοὺς (years) τρεῖς (three) καὶ (and) μῆνας (months) ἕξ (six). ¹⁸ καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) προσηύξατο (he prayed), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) οὐρανὸς (heaven) ὑετὸν (rain) ἔδωκεν (gave), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) ἐβλάστησεν (produced) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτῆς (of it).

²² καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτῶμεν (we might ask), λαμβάνομεν (we receive) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅτι (because) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τηροῦμεν (we keep), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἀρεστὰ (pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ποιοῦμεν (we do).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) παρρησία (confidence) ἣν (that) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (that) ἐάν (if) τι (anything) αἰτώμεθα (we might ask) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀκούει (He hears) ἡμῶν (us). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀκούει (He hears) ἡμῶν (us), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτώμεθα (we might ask), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἔχομεν (we have) τὰ (the) αἰτήματα (requests) ἃ (that) ᾐτήκαμεν (we have asked) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him).

²³ Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) προσφέρῃς (you shall offer) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you) ἐπὶ (at) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar), κἀκεῖ (and there) μνησθῇς (shall remember) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) ἔχει (has) τι (something) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you),

⁵ Καὶ (And) ὅταν (when) προσεύχησθε (you pray), οὐκ (not) ἔσεσθε (you shall be) ὡς (like) οἱ (the) ὑποκριταί (hypocrites), ὅτι (for) φιλοῦσιν (they love) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) καὶ (and) ἐν (on) ταῖς (the) γωνίαις (corners) τῶν (of the) πλατειῶν (streets) ἑστῶτες (standing) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray), ὅπως (so that) φανῶσιν (they might be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπέχουσιν (they have) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹² Καὶ (And) ἄφες (forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰ (the) ὀφειλήματα (debts) ἡμῶν (of us), Ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀφήκαμεν (forgive) τοῖς (the) ὀφειλέταις (debtors) ἡμῶν (of us);

¹⁴ Ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) αὐτῶν (of them), ἀφήσει (will forgive) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (you) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly). ¹⁵ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men) (τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (the trespasses) αὐτῶν) (of them), οὐδὲ (neither) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀφήσει (will forgive) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ὑμῶν (of you).

²³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὡμοιώθη (has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man), βασιλεῖ (a king), ὃς (who) ἠθέλησεν (desired) συνᾶραι (to settle) λόγον (accounts) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δούλων (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁴ ἀρξαμένου (Having begun) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) συναίρειν (to settle), προσηνέχθη* (was brought) εἷς (one) αὐτῷ (to him), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) μυρίων (of ten thousand) ταλάντων (talents). ²⁵ μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made). ²⁶ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) προσεκύνει (was bowing on his knees) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (to you).’ ²⁷ Σπλαγχνισθεὶς (Having been moved with compassion) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) δάνειον (debt) ἀφῆκεν (forgave) αὐτῷ (him). ²⁸ Ἐξελθὼν (Having gone out) δὲ (however), ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (same) εὗρεν (found) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) συνδούλων (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὃς (who) ὤφειλεν (was owing) αὐτῷ (him) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) δηνάρια (denarii), καὶ (and) κρατήσας (having seized) αὐτὸν (him) ἔπνιγεν (he was throttling him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀπόδος (Pay) εἴ (if) τι (any) ὀφείλεις (you owe).’ ²⁹ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore), ὁ (the) σύνδουλος (fellow servant) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτὸν (him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (you).’ ³⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he was willing), ἀλλὰ (rather) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἕως (until) ‹οὗ› (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) τὸ (that which) ὀφειλόμενον (was owing). ³¹ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) σύνδουλοι (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα (having taken place), ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having gone), διεσάφησαν (narrated) τῷ (to) κυρίῳ (master) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) γενόμενα (having taken place). ³² Τότε (Then) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Δοῦλε (Servant) πονηρέ (evil), πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (debt) ἐκείνην (that) ἀφῆκά (I forgave) σοι (you), ἐπεὶ (because) παρεκάλεσάς (you begged) με (me). ³³ οὐκ (Not) ἔδει (did it behoove) καὶ (also) σὲ (you) ἐλεῆσαι (to have pitied) τὸν (the) σύνδουλόν (fellow servant) σου (of you), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (also I) σὲ (you) ἠλέησα (had pitied)?’ ³⁴ καὶ (And) ὀργισθεὶς (having been angry), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) βασανισταῖς (jailers), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) πᾶν (all) τὸ (-) ὀφειλόμενον (being owed) 〈αὐτῷ〉 (to him). ³⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) ποιήσει (will do) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) ἕκαστος (each) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) καρδιῶν (heart) ὑμῶν (of you).”

³⁷ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) κρίνετε (judge), καὶ (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) κριθῆτε (you should be judged); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) καταδικάζετε (condemn), καὶ (that) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) καταδικασθῆτε (you should be condemned). ἀπολύετε (Forgive), καὶ (and) ἀπολυθήσεσθε (you will be forgiven).

¹¹ ὁ (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), σταθεὶς (having stood), ταῦτα (thus) «πρὸς (toward) ἑαυτὸν» (himself) προσηύχετο (was praying), Ὁ (-) ‘Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men) — ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers) — ἢ (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) τελώνης (tax collector).

³² γίνεσθε (Be) δὲ (now) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) χρηστοί (kind), εὔσπλαγχνοι (tender-hearted), χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐχαρίσατο (forgave) ὑμῖν (you).

¹³ ἀνεχόμενοι (bearing with) ἀλλήλων (each other) καὶ (and) χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) πρός (against) τινα (another) ἔχῃ (should have) μομφήν (a complaint), καθὼς (even as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐχαρίσατο (has forgiven) ὑμῖν (you), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you).

¹³ ἡ (-) γὰρ (For) κρίσις (judgment) ἀνέλεος (without mercy will be) τῷ (to the one) μὴ (not) ποιήσαντι (having shown) ἔλεος (mercy). κατακαυχᾶται (Triumphs over) ἔλεος (mercy) κρίσεως (judgment).

⁴ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) αἱ (the) δύο (two) ἐλαῖαι (olive trees) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δύο (two) λυχνίαι (lampstands) αἱ (-) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) ἑστῶτες (standing).

²³ Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντος (having come) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) διδάσκοντι (teaching), οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐν (By) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (are You doing)? καὶ (And) τίς (who) σοι (to You) ἔδωκεν (gave) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?” ²⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (thing) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐρῶ (will say) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do). ²⁵ τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) τὸ (of) Ἰωάννου (John), πόθεν (from where) ἦν (was it)? ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) διελογίζοντο (they were reasoning) ἐν (with) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say) ἡμῖν (to us), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὖν (then) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ²⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ φοβούμεθα (we fear) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) ἔχουσιν (hold) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John).” ²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).

¹ Ἦν (It would be) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) πάσχα (Passover) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἄζυμα (Feast of Unleavened Bread), μετὰ (after) δύο (two) ἡμέρας (days). καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) πῶς (how), αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (by) δόλῳ (stealth) κρατήσαντες (having taken), ἀποκτείνωσιν (they might kill Him).

¹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (on) μιᾷ (one) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days), διδάσκοντος (as was teaching) αὐτοῦ (He) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) καὶ (and) εὐαγγελιζομένου (proclaiming the gospel), ἐπέστησαν (came up) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) πρεσβυτέροις (elders) ² καὶ (and) εἶπαν (spoke), λέγοντες (saying) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Εἰπὸν (Tell) ἡμῖν (us) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (You do), ἢ (or) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) δούς (having given) σοι (to You) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ταύτην (this)?” ³ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (one thing), καὶ (and) εἴπατέ (you tell) μοι (Me): ⁴ Τὸ (The) βάπτισμα (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John), ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἦν (was it), ἢ (or) ἐξ (from) ἀνθρώπων (men)?” ⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) συνελογίσαντο (they reasoned) πρὸς (among) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἐὰν (If) εἴπωμεν (we should say) ‘Ἐξ (From) οὐρανοῦ (heaven),’ ἐρεῖ (He will say), ‘Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (did you believe) αὐτῷ (him)?’ ⁶ ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπωμεν (we should say), ‘Ἐξ (From) ἀνθρώπων (men),’ ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἅπας (all) καταλιθάσει (will stone) ἡμᾶς (us); πεπεισμένος (having been persuaded) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (they are), Ἰωάννην (John) προφήτην (a prophet) εἶναι (to be).” ⁷ Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθησαν (they answered), μὴ (not) εἰδέναι (they knew) πόθεν (from where). ⁸ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I am doing).”

²³ καὶ (and) περιεπάτει (was walking) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) στοᾷ (porch) τοῦ (-) Σολομῶνος (of Solomon).

²⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγὼ (I) παρρησίᾳ (openly) λελάληκα (have spoken) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world); ἐγὼ (I) πάντοτε (always) ἐδίδαξα (taught) ἐν (in) συναγωγῇ (the synagogue) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), ὅπου (where) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) συνέρχονται (come together), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) κρυπτῷ (secret) ἐλάλησα (I spoke) οὐδέν (nothing).

⁵ Ἐγένετο (It came to pass) δὲ (then) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) αὔριον (next day) συναχθῆναι (were gathered together) αὐτῶν (their) τοὺς (-) ἄρχοντας (rulers) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) πρεσβυτέρους (elders) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) γραμματεῖς (scribes) ἐν (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ⁶ καὶ (and) Ἅννας (Annas) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest), καὶ (and) Καϊάφας (Caiaphas), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John), καὶ (and) Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexander), καὶ (and) ὅσοι (as many as) ἦσαν (were) ἐκ (of) γένους (descent) ἀρχιερατικοῦ (high-priestly). ⁷ καὶ (And) στήσαντες (having placed) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μέσῳ (midst), ἐπυνθάνοντο (they began to inquire), “Ἐν (In) ποίᾳ (what) δυνάμει (power) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ποίῳ (what) ὀνόματι (name) ἐποιήσατε (did) τοῦτο (this) ὑμεῖς (you)?” ⁸ Τότε (Then) Πέτρος (Peter), πλησθεὶς (having been filled) Πνεύματος (with the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ἄρχοντες (Rulers) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) πρεσβύτεροι (elders),

²⁷ Συνήχθησαν (Were gathered together) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (in) ἀληθείας (truth), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πόλει (city) ταύτῃ (this), ἐπὶ (against) τὸν (the) ἅγιον (holy) Παῖδά (servant) σου (of You) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ὃν (whom) ἔχρισας (You anointed), Ἡρῴδης (Herod) τε (both) καὶ (and) Πόντιος (Pontius) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), σὺν (with) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles) καὶ (and) λαοῖς (peoples) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ²⁸ ποιῆσαι (to do) ὅσα (whatever) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of You) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) βουλὴ (purpose) [σου] (of You) προώρισεν (had determined beforehand) γενέσθαι (to happen).

²⁷ Ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ἀδικῶν (mistreating) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) ἀπώσατο (pushed away) αὐτὸν (him), εἰπών (having said), ‘Τίς (Who) σε (you) κατέστησεν (appointed), ἄρχοντα (ruler) καὶ (and) δικαστὴν (judge) ἐφ’ (over) ἡμῶν (us)? ²⁸ μὴ (Not) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) με (me) σὺ (you) θέλεις (desire), ὃν (the same) τρόπον (way) ἀνεῖλες (you put to death) ἐχθὲς (yesterday) τὸν (the) Αἰγύπτιον (Egyptian)?’

³⁸ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) γενόμενος (having been) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (congregation) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) ἀγγέλου (angel) τοῦ (-) λαλοῦντος (speaking) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄρει (Mount) Σινᾶ (Sinai), καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ὃς (who) ἐδέξατο (received) λόγια (oracles) ζῶντα (living) δοῦναι (to give) ἡμῖν* (to us), ³⁹ ᾧ (to whom) οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησαν (were willing) ὑπήκοοι (obedient) γενέσθαι (to be) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπώσαντο (thrust away), καὶ (and) ἐστράφησαν (turned back) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (to) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt),

²⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐρωτήσω (Will ask) ὑμᾶς (you) κἀγὼ (I also) λόγον (thing) ἕνα (one), ὃν (which) ἐὰν (if) εἴπητέ (you tell) μοι (Me), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐρῶ (will say) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).

¹ Ἐν (In) δὲ (then) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those), παραγίνεται (comes) Ἰωάννης (John) ὁ (the) βαπτιστὴς (Baptist), κηρύσσων (preaching) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), ² ‹καὶ› (and) λέγων (saying), “Μετανοεῖτε (Repent); ἤγγικεν (has drawn near) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).” ³ οὗτος (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ῥηθεὶς (having been spoken of) διὰ (through) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), “Φωνὴ (The voice) βοῶντος (of one crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), ‘Ἑτοιμάσατε (Prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord); εὐθείας (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τὰς (the) τρίβους (paths) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’” ⁴ Αὐτὸς (Himself) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) εἶχεν (had) τὸ (the) ἔνδυμα (garment) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀπὸ (of) τριχῶν (hair) καμήλου (of a camel), καὶ (and) ζώνην (a belt) δερματίνην (of leather) περὶ (around) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (waist) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) τροφὴ (the food) ἦν (was) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀκρίδες (locusts) καὶ (and) μέλι (honey) ἄγριον (wild). ⁵ Τότε (At that time) ἐξεπορεύετο (were going out) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (-) Ἰουδαία (Judea), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) περίχωρος (region around) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ⁶ καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (River) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁷ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) πολλοὺς (many) τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαίων (Sadducees) ἐρχομένους (coming) ἐπὶ (to) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of him), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γεννήματα (Brood) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), τίς (who) ὑπέδειξεν (forewarned) ὑμῖν (you) φυγεῖν (to flee) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μελλούσης (coming) ὀργῆς (wrath)? ⁸ ποιήσατε (Produce) οὖν (therefore) καρπὸν (fruit) ἄξιον (worthy) τῆς (-) μετανοίας (of repentance). ⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) δόξητε (presume) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (within) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ‘Πατέρα (As father) ἔχομεν (we have) τὸν (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham).’ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) δύναται (able is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) λίθων (stones) τούτων (these) ἐγεῖραι (to raise up) τέκνα (children) τῷ (unto) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham). ¹⁰ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown). ¹¹ Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed) ὑμᾶς (you) βαπτίζω (baptize) ἐν (with) ὕδατι (water) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (is coming) ἰσχυρότερός (mightier) μού (than I), ἐστιν (He) οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (fit) τὰ (the) ὑποδήματα (sandals) βαστάσαι (to carry). αὐτὸς (He) ὑμᾶς (you) βαπτίσει (will baptize) ἐν (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) πυρί (with fire), ¹² οὗ (whose) τὸ (-) πτύον (winnowing fork is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) διακαθαριεῖ (He will clear) τὴν (the) ἅλωνα (threshing floor) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) συνάξει (will gather) τὸν (the) σῖτον (wheat) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἀποθήκην (barn); τὸ (the) δὲ (but) ἄχυρον (chaff) κατακαύσει (He will burn up) πυρὶ (with fire) ἀσβέστῳ (unquenchable).” ¹³ Τότε (Then) παραγίνεται (comes) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) Ἰορδάνην (Jordan), πρὸς (unto) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John), τοῦ (-) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him). ¹⁴ ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ‹Ἰωάννης› (John) διεκώλυεν (was hindering) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Ἐγὼ (I) χρείαν (need) ἔχω (have) ὑπὸ (by) σοῦ (You) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) ἔρχῃ (come) πρός (to) με (me)?” ¹⁵ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering), δὲ (however), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) ‹πρὸς (unto) αὐτόν› (him), “Ἄφες (Permit it) ἄρτι (presently); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) πρέπον (fitting) ἐστὶν (it is) ἡμῖν (to us) πληρῶσαι (to fulfill) πᾶσαν (all) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness).” τότε (Then) ἀφίησιν (he permits) αὐτόν (Him). ¹⁶ Βαπτισθεὶς (Having been baptized) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀνέβη (went up) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἠνεῴχθησαν (were opened) οἱ (the) οὐρανοί (heavens), καὶ (and) εἶδεν (he saw) [τὸ] (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) [τοῦ] (of) Θεοῦ (God) καταβαῖνον (descending) ὡσεὶ (as) περιστερὰν (a dove), [καὶ] (and) ἐρχόμενον (alighting) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I was well pleased).”

¹ Ἀρχὴ (The beginning) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), Υἱοῦ (Son) Θεοῦ (of God). ² Καθὼς (As) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἠσαΐᾳ (Isaiah) τῷ (the) προφήτῃ (prophet): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀποστέλλω (I send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (face) σου (of You), ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You).” ³ “Φωνὴ (The voice) βοῶντος (of one crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), ‘Ἑτοιμάσατε (Prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord), εὐθείας (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τὰς (the) τρίβους (paths) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’” ⁴ Ἐγένετο (Came) Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (-) βαπτίζων (baptizing) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) [καὶ] (and) κηρύσσων (proclaiming) βάπτισμα (a baptism) μετανοίας (of repentance) εἰς (for) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins). ⁵ καὶ (And) ἐξεπορεύετο (were going out) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) Ἰουδαία (of Judea) χώρα (region) καὶ (and) οἱ (-) Ἱεροσολυμῖται (of Jerusalem), πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (river), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁶ Καὶ (And) ἦν (was) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) ἐνδεδυμένος (clothed in) τρίχας (hair) καμήλου (of a camel), καὶ (and) ζώνην (a belt) δερματίνην (of leather) περὶ (around) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (waist) αὐτοῦ (of him); καὶ (and) ἔσθων (he is eating) ἀκρίδας (locusts) καὶ (and) μέλι (honey) ἄγριον (wild). ⁷ καὶ (And) ἐκήρυσσεν (he was preaching), λέγων (saying), “Ἔρχεται (He comes) ὁ (who) ἰσχυρότερός (is mightier) μου (than I) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me), οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (sufficient), κύψας (having stooped down), λῦσαι (to untie) τὸν (the) ἱμάντα (strap) τῶν (of the) ὑποδημάτων (sandals) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ⁸ ἐγὼ (I) ἐβάπτισα (baptized) ὑμᾶς (you) ὕδατι (with water); αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) βαπτίσει (will baptize) ὑμᾶς (you) ‹ἐν› (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) ἡμέραις (days), ἦλθεν (that came) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρὲτ (Nazareth) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίσθη (was baptized) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Ἰορδάνην (Jordan) ὑπὸ (by) Ἰωάννου (John). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὐθὺς (immediately) ἀναβαίνων (going up) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water), εἶδεν (he saw) σχιζομένους (tearing open) τοὺς (the) οὐρανοὺς (heavens), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὡς (as) περιστερὰν (a dove) καταβαῖνον (descending) εἰς (upon) αὐτόν (Him). ¹¹ καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) ἐγένετο (came) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) οὐρανῶν (heavens): “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) σοὶ (You) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased).”

¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἐλήλυθεν (has come), καὶ (and) ἐποίησαν (they did) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (whatever) ἤθελον (they desired), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐπ’ (of) αὐτόν (him).”

¹ Ἐν (In) ἔτει (year) δὲ (then) πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ (fifteenth) τῆς (of the) ἡγεμονίας (reign) Τιβερίου (of Tiberius) Καίσαρος (Caesar), ἡγεμονεύοντος (being governor) Ποντίου (Pontius) Πιλάτου (Pilate) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) τετρααρχοῦντος (being tetrarch) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee) Ἡρῴδου (Herod), Φιλίππου (Philip) δὲ (now) τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) τετρααρχοῦντος (being tetrarch) τῆς (-) Ἰτουραίας (of Ituraea) καὶ (and) Τραχωνίτιδος (of Trachonitis) χώρας (the region), καὶ (and) Λυσανίου (Lysanias) τῆς (-) Ἀβιληνῆς (of Abilene) τετρααρχοῦντος (being tetrarch), ² ἐπὶ (during) ἀρχιερέως (the high priesthood) Ἅννα (of Annas) καὶ (and) Καϊάφα (Caiaphas), ἐγένετο (came) ῥῆμα (the word) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (upon) Ἰωάννην (John), τὸν (-) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) υἱὸν (son), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness). ³ Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (he went) εἰς (into) πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) περίχωρον (surrounding region) τοῦ (of the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), κηρύσσων (proclaiming) βάπτισμα (a baptism) μετανοίας (of repentance) εἰς (for) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins), ⁴ ὡς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐν (in) βίβλῳ (the book) λόγων (of the words) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet): “Φωνὴ (The voice) βοῶντος (of one crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), ‘Ἑτοιμάσατε (Prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord); εὐθείας (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τὰς (the) τρίβους (paths) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’ ⁵ πᾶσα (Every) φάραγξ (valley) πληρωθήσεται (will be filled), καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) ὄρος (mountain) καὶ (and) βουνὸς (hill) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be made low); καὶ (and) ἔσται (will become) τὰ (the) σκολιὰ (crooked) εἰς (into) εὐθείαν* (straight), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) τραχεῖαι (rough) εἰς (into) ὁδοὺς (ways) λείας (smooth); ⁶ καὶ (and) ὄψεται (will see) πᾶσα (all) σὰρξ (flesh) τὸ (the) σωτήριον (salvation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁷ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) οὖν (therefore) τοῖς (to the) ἐκπορευομένοις (coming out) ὄχλοις (crowds) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), “Γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), τίς (who) ὑπέδειξεν (forewarned) ὑμῖν (you) φυγεῖν (to flee) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) μελλούσης (coming) ὀργῆς (wrath)? ⁸ ποιήσατε (Produce) οὖν (therefore) καρποὺς (fruits) ἀξίους (worthy) τῆς (-) μετανοίας (of repentance); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἄρξησθε (begin) λέγειν (to say) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves), ‘Πατέρα (As father) ἔχομεν (We have) τὸν (-) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham).’ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) δύναται (is able) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) λίθων (stones) τούτων (these) ἐγεῖραι (to raise up) τέκνα (children) τῷ (-) Ἀβραάμ (to Abraham). ⁹ ἤδη (Already) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ἀξίνη (ax) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ῥίζαν (root) τῶν (of the) δένδρων (trees) κεῖται (is applied); πᾶν (every) οὖν (therefore) δένδρον (tree) μὴ (not) ποιοῦν (producing) καρπὸν (fruit) καλὸν (good) ἐκκόπτεται (is cut down) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) πῦρ (the fire) βάλλεται (is thrown).” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτων (were asking) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ποιήσωμεν (shall we do)?” ¹¹ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ἔλεγεν (he was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) δύο (two) χιτῶνας (tunics), μεταδότω (let him impart) τῷ (to the one) μὴ (none) ἔχοντι (having); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἔχων (having) βρώματα (food), ὁμοίως (likewise) ποιείτω (let him do).” ¹² Ἦλθον (Came) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τελῶναι (tax collectors) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized), καὶ (and) εἶπαν (they said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), τί (what) ποιήσωμεν (shall we do)?” ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Μηδὲν (Nothing) πλέον (more) παρὰ (beyond) τὸ (that) διατεταγμένον (having been appointed) ὑμῖν (to you) πράσσετε (collect).” ¹⁴ Ἐπηρώτων (Were asking) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) στρατευόμενοι (those being soldiers), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) ποιήσωμεν (shall do) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we)?” Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Μηδένα (No one) διασείσητε (extort) μηδὲ (nor) συκοφαντήσητε (accuse falsely), καὶ (and) ἀρκεῖσθε (be content with) τοῖς (the) ὀψωνίοις (wages) ὑμῶν (of you).” ¹⁵ Προσδοκῶντος (Are expecting) δὲ (then) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people) καὶ (and) διαλογιζομένων (wondering) πάντων (all) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (-) Ἰωάννου (John), μή‿ (whether) ποτε (ever) αὐτὸς (he) εἴη (might be) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ). ¹⁶ ἀπεκρίνατο (Answered) λέγων (saying) πᾶσιν (to all) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John), “Ἐγὼ (I) μὲν (indeed) ὕδατι (with water) βαπτίζω (baptize) ὑμᾶς (you); ἔρχεται (comes) δὲ (however) ὁ (the One) ἰσχυρότερός (mightier) μου (than I), οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ἱκανὸς (worthy) λῦσαι (to untie) τὸν (the) ἱμάντα (strap) τῶν (of the) ὑποδημάτων (sandals) αὐτοῦ (of Him); αὐτὸς (He) ὑμᾶς (you) βαπτίσει (will baptize) ἐν (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy), καὶ (and) πυρί (with fire), ¹⁷ οὗ (of whom) τὸ (the) πτύον (winnowing fork is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διακαθᾶραι (to clear) τὴν (the) ἅλωνα (threshing floor) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) συναγαγεῖν (to gather) τὸν (the) σῖτον (wheat) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἀποθήκην (barn) αὐτοῦ (of Him). τὸ (-) δὲ (But) ἄχυρον (the chaff) κατακαύσει (He will burn up) πυρὶ (with fire) ἀσβέστῳ (unquenchable).” ¹⁸ Πολλὰ (Many) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) καὶ (other) ἕτερα (things) παρακαλῶν (exhorting), εὐηγγελίζετο (he was preaching the good news to) τὸν (the) λαόν (people). ¹⁹ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (tetrarch), ἐλεγχόμενος (being reproved) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) περὶ (concerning) Ἡρῳδιάδος (Herodias), τῆς (the) γυναικὸς (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) ὧν (that) ἐποίησεν (had done) πονηρῶν (the evils) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod), ²⁰ προσέθηκεν (added) καὶ (yet) τοῦτο (this) ἐπὶ (to) πᾶσιν (all): ‹καὶ› (Also) κατέκλεισεν (he locked up) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison).

⁶ Ἐγένετο (There came) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπεσταλμένος (having been sent) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God); ὄνομα (the name) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰωάννης (was John). ⁷ οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (as) μαρτυρίαν (a witness), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might testify) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light), ἵνα (that) πάντες (all) πιστεύσωσιν (might believe) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁸ οὐκ (Not) ἦν (was) ἐκεῖνος (He) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσῃ (he might witness) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) φωτός (Light).

¹⁵ Ἰωάννης (John) μαρτυρεῖ (witnesses) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) κέκραγεν (he cried out), λέγων (saying), “Οὗτος (This) ἦν (was He) ὃν (of whom) εἶπον (I was saying), ‘Ὁ (The One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).’” ¹⁶ Ὅτι (For) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πληρώματος (fullness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἐλάβομεν (have received) καὶ (then) χάριν (grace) ἀντὶ (for) χάριτος (grace). ¹⁷ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given); ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came). ¹⁸ Θεὸν (God) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑώρακεν (has seen) πώποτε (ever yet); μονογενὴς (the only begotten) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) κόλπον (bosom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐξηγήσατο (has made Him known). ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Ἰωάννου (of John), ὅτε (when) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἐξ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem), ἱερεῖς (priests) καὶ (and) Λευίτας (Levites), ἵνα (that) ἐρωτήσωσιν (they might ask) αὐτόν (him), “Σὺ (You), τίς (who) εἶ (are)?” ²⁰ καὶ (And) ὡμολόγησεν (he confessed) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠρνήσατο (denied), καὶ (but) ὡμολόγησεν (confessed) ὅτι (-), “Ἐγὼ (I) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).” ²¹ Καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτόν (him), “Τί (What) οὖν (then)? σὺ (You) Ἠλίας (Elijah) εἶ (are)?” Καὶ (And) λέγει (he says), “Οὐκ (Not) εἰμί (I am).” “Ὁ (The) προφήτης (prophet) εἶ (are) σύ (you)?” Καὶ (And) ἀπεκρίθη (he answered), “Οὔ (No).” ²² Εἶπαν (They said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τίς (Who) εἶ (are you)? ἵνα (That) ἀπόκρισιν (an answer) δῶμεν (we might give) τοῖς (to those) πέμψασιν (having sent) ἡμᾶς (us); τί (what) λέγεις (say you) περὶ (about) σεαυτοῦ (yourself)?” ²³ Ἔφη (He was saying), “Ἐγὼ (I am) φωνὴ (a voice) βοῶντος (crying) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), ‘Εὐθύνατε (Make straight) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) Κυρίου (of the Lord),’” καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (said) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet). ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀπεσταλμένοι (those having been sent) ἦσαν (were) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees). ²⁵ καὶ (And) ἠρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) βαπτίζεις (baptize you), εἰ (if) σὺ (you) οὐκ (not) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), οὐδὲ (nor) Ἠλίας (Elijah), οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet)?” ²⁶ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) λέγων (saying), “Ἐγὼ (I) βαπτίζω (baptize) ἐν (with) ὕδατι (water); μέσος (but in the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) ἕστηκεν* (stands One) ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know), ²⁷ ὁ (the One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) ἄξιος (worthy) ἵνα (that) λύσω (I should untie) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸν (the) ἱμάντα (strap) τοῦ (of the) ὑποδήματος (sandal).” ²⁸ Ταῦτα (These things) ἐν (in) Βηθανίᾳ (Bethany) ἐγένετο (took place), πέραν (across) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John) βαπτίζων (baptizing). ²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world). ³⁰ οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (it is) ὑπὲρ (concerning) οὗ (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εἶπον (said), ‘Ὀπίσω (After) μου (me) ἔρχεται (comes) ἀνὴρ (a man), ὃς (who) ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).’ ³¹ κἀγὼ (And I) οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (knew) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) φανερωθῇ (He might be revealed) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel), διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), ἦλθον (came) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (with) ὕδατι (water) βαπτίζων (baptizing).” ³² Καὶ (And) ἐμαρτύρησεν (bore witness) Ἰωάννης (John) λέγων (saying) ὅτι (-), “Τεθέαμαι (I have beheld) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), καταβαῖνον (descending) ὡς (as) περιστερὰν (a dove) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) ἔμεινεν (it remained) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him). ³³ κἀγὼ (And I) οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (knew) αὐτόν (Him); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (me) βαπτίζειν (to baptize) ἐν (with) ὕδατι (water), ἐκεῖνός (He) μοι (to me) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ἐφ’ (Upon) ὃν (whom) ἂν (-) ἴδῃς (you shall see) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) καταβαῖνον (descending) καὶ (and) μένον (abiding) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (Him), οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) βαπτίζων (baptizing) ἐν (with) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).’ ³⁴ κἀγὼ (And I) ἑώρακα (have seen) καὶ (and) μεμαρτύρηκα (have borne witness) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ³⁵ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) πάλιν (again) εἱστήκει (was standing) ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης (John), καὶ (and) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) δύο (two). ³⁶ καὶ (And) ἐμβλέψας (having looked at) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) περιπατοῦντι (walking), λέγει (he says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)!”

²⁵ Ἐγένετο (Arose) οὖν (then) ζήτησις (a debate) ἐκ (among) τῶν (the) μαθητῶν (disciples) Ἰωάννου (of John), μετὰ (with) Ἰουδαίου (a certain Jew), περὶ (about) καθαρισμοῦ (purification). ²⁶ καὶ (And) ἦλθον (they came) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰωάννην (John) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), ὃς (He who) ἦν (was) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ᾧ (to whom) σὺ (you) μεμαρτύρηκας (have borne witness), ἴδε (behold) οὗτος (He) βαπτίζει (baptizes), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ἔρχονται (are coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him).” ²⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰωάννης (John) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐ (Nothing) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) λαμβάνειν (to receive), ‹οὐδὲ (nothing) ἓν› (one) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ᾖ (it is) δεδομένον (given) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven). ²⁸ αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) ὑμεῖς (you) μοι (to me) μαρτυρεῖτε (bear witness), ὅτι (that) εἶπον (I said), [ὅτι] (-) ‘Οὐκ (Not) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (-) Ἀπεσταλμένος (sent) εἰμὶ (I am) ἔμπροσθεν (before) ἐκείνου (Him).’ ²⁹ Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) νύμφην (bride), νυμφίος (the bridegroom) ἐστίν (is); ὁ (the) δὲ (now) φίλος (friend) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ὁ (the one) ἑστηκὼς (standing) καὶ (and) ἀκούων (listening for) αὐτοῦ (him), χαρᾷ (with joy) χαίρει (rejoices) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom). αὕτη (This) οὖν (therefore), ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (of mine), πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled). ³⁰ ἐκεῖνον (Him) δεῖ (it behooves) αὐξάνειν (to increase); ἐμὲ (me) δὲ (however) ἐλαττοῦσθαι (to decrease). ³¹ Ὁ (The One) ἄνωθεν (from above) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἐπάνω (above) πάντων (all) ἐστίν (is). ὁ (The one) ὢν (being) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) λαλεῖ (speaks). ὁ (The One) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἐπάνω (above) πάντων (all) ἐστίν (is). ³² ὃ (What) ἑώρακεν (He has seen) καὶ (and) ἤκουσεν (heard), τοῦτο (this) μαρτυρεῖ (He testifies); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὐδεὶς (no one) λαμβάνει (receives). ³³ ὁ (The one) λαβὼν (having received) αὐτοῦ (His) τὴν (-) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐσφράγισεν (has set his seal) ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is). ³⁴ ὃν (He whom) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλεῖ (speaks), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) μέτρου (measure) δίδωσιν (He gives) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit). ³⁵ Ὁ (The) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) τὸν (the) Υἱόν (Son), καὶ (and) πάντα (all things) δέδωκεν (has given) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³⁶ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ἀπειθῶν (not obeying) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son), οὐκ (not) ὄψεται (will see) ζωήν (life), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (him).”

⁷ Τούτων (As these) δὲ (now) πορευομένων (were going away), ἤρξατο (began) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγειν (to speak) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds) περὶ (concerning) Ἰωάννου (John): “Τί (What) ἐξήλθατε (went you out) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἔρημον (wilderness) θεάσασθαι (to see)? κάλαμον (A reed) ὑπὸ (by the) ἀνέμου (wind) σαλευόμενον (shaken)? ⁸ ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (did you go out) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ἄνθρωπον (A man) ἐν (in) μαλακοῖς (delicate clothing) ἠμφιεσμένον (having been dressed)? ἰδοὺ (Behold), οἱ (those) τὰ (-) μαλακὰ (delicate clothing) φοροῦντες (wearing), ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οἴκοις (houses) τῶν (-) βασιλέων (of kings) ‹εἰσίν› (are). ⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (did you go out), προφήτην (a prophet) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet). ¹⁰ οὗτός (For this) ἐστιν (is he) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) γέγραπται (it has been written): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἀποστέλλω (send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) σου (of You), Ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).’ ¹¹ Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) ἐγήγερται (there has risen) ἐν (among those) γεννητοῖς (born) γυναικῶν (of women) μείζων (one greater) Ἰωάννου (than John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist). ὁ (-) δὲ (Yet) μικρότερος (the least) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), μείζων (greater) αὐτοῦ (than he) ἐστιν (is). ¹² ἀπὸ (From) δὲ (then) τῶν (the) ἡμερῶν (days) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now), ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) βιάζεται (is taken by violence), καὶ (and the) βιασταὶ (violent) ἁρπάζουσιν (claim) αὐτήν (it). ¹³ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἕως (until) Ἰωάννου (John) ἐπροφήτευσαν (prophesied). ¹⁴ καὶ (And) εἰ (if) θέλετε (you are willing) δέξασθαι (to receive it), αὐτός (he) ἐστιν (is) Ἠλίας (Elijah), ὁ (the one) μέλλων (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come).

³¹ Τίς (Which) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἐποίησεν (did) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father)?” Λέγουσιν (They say), “Ὁ (The) πρῶτος* (first).” Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) προάγουσιν (go before) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³² ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in the) ὁδῷ (way) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπιστεύσατε (you did believe) αὐτῷ (him), οἱ (-) δὲ (however) τελῶναι (the tax collectors) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) πόρναι (prostitutes) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) αὐτῷ (him); ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (then), ἰδόντες (having seen), οὐδὲ (not even) μετεμελήθητε (did repent) ὕστερον (afterward) τοῦ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτῷ (him).

¹⁵ Ἰωάννης (John) μαρτυρεῖ (witnesses) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) κέκραγεν (he cried out), λέγων (saying), “Οὗτος (This) ἦν (was He) ὃν (of whom) εἶπον (I was saying), ‘Ὁ (The One) ὀπίσω (after) μου (me) ἐρχόμενος (coming), ἔμπροσθέν (precedence) μου (over me) γέγονεν (has), ὅτι (because) πρῶτός (before) μου (me) ἦν (He was).’”

²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

³⁴ κἀγὼ (And I) ἑώρακα (have seen) καὶ (and) μεμαρτύρηκα (have borne witness) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

³⁶ καὶ (And) ἐμβλέψας (having looked at) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) περιπατοῦντι (walking), λέγει (he says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)!”

⁵ Τότε (At that time) ἐξεπορεύετο (were going out) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (-) Ἰουδαία (Judea), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) ἡ (the) περίχωρος (region around) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan), ⁶ καὶ (and) ἐβαπτίζοντο (were being baptized) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἰορδάνῃ (Jordan) ποταμῷ (River) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐξομολογούμενοι (confessing) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).

⁹ ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (did you go out), προφήτην (a prophet) ἰδεῖν (to see)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet).

⁵ καὶ (Although) θέλων (wishing) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ἐφοβήθη (he feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (him) εἶχον (they were holding).

⁴⁶ καὶ (And) ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτὸν (Him) κρατῆσαι (to lay hold of), ἐφοβήθησαν (they feared) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐπεὶ (because) εἰς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (Him) εἶχον (they were holding).

²⁶ Ἀλλὰ (But) τί (what) ἐξήλθατε (have you gone out) ἰδεῖν (to see)? προφήτην (A prophet)? ναί (Yes), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (and one) περισσότερον (more excellent) προφήτου (than a prophet). ²⁷ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is he) περὶ (concerning) οὗ (whom) γέγραπται (it has been written): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἀποστέλλω (I send) τὸν (the) ἄγγελόν (messenger) μου (of Me) πρὸ (before) προσώπου (the face) σου (of you), Ὃς (who) κατασκευάσει (will prepare) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (way) σου (of You) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).’ ²⁸ Λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), μείζων (a greater) ἐν (among) γεννητοῖς (those born) γυναικῶν (of women) Ἰωάννου (than John) οὐδείς (no one) ἐστιν (is); ὁ (-) δὲ (yet) μικρότερος (the least) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God), μείζων (greater) αὐτοῦ (than he) ἐστιν (is).” ²⁹ Καὶ (And) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) ἀκούσας (having heard), καὶ (even) οἱ (the) τελῶναι (tax collectors), ἐδικαίωσαν (declared as righteous) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), βαπτισθέντες (having been baptized with) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) Ἰωάννου (of John);

² καὶ (And) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) τὸ (-) πῶς (how) ἀνέλωσιν (they might put to death) αὐτόν (him); ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) γὰρ (for) τὸν (of the) λαόν (people).

⁴¹ καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἦλθον (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἰωάννης (John) μὲν (indeed) σημεῖον (sign) ἐποίησεν (did) οὐδέν (no); πάντα (everything) δὲ (however) ὅσα (that) εἶπεν (said) Ἰωάννης (John) περὶ (about) τούτου (this man), ἀληθῆ (true) ἦν (was).”

²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ὁ (the) στρατηγὸς (captain) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) ὑπηρέταις (officers) ἦγεν (was bringing) αὐτούς (them), οὐ (not) μετὰ (with) βίας (force); ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid of) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) λαόν (people) μὴ (lest) λιθασθῶσιν (they might be stoned).

¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).”

⁴ γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah).” καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He went away).

²⁷ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθέντες (answering) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδαμεν (do we know).” Ἔφη (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) καὶ (also) αὐτός (He), “Οὐδὲ (Neither) ἐγὼ (I) λέγω (tell) ὑμῖν (you) ἐν (by) ποίᾳ (what) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) ταῦτα (these things) ποιῶ (I do).

¹⁶ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁδηγοὶ (guides) τυφλοὶ (blind), οἱ (those) λέγοντες (saying), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) χρυσῷ (gold) τοῦ (of the) ναοῦ (temple) ὀφείλει (is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁷ μωροὶ (Foolish) καὶ (and) τυφλοί (blind)! τίς (Which) γὰρ (for) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is), ὁ (the) χρυσὸς (gold), ἢ (or) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) ὁ (-) ἁγιάσας (having sanctified) τὸν (the) χρυσόν (gold)? ¹⁸ καί (And you say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar), οὐδέν (nothing) ἐστιν (it is); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ὀμόσῃ (shall swear) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) δώρῳ (gift) τῷ (that is) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it), ὀφείλει (he is bound by his oath).’ ¹⁹ τυφλοί (You blind men)! τί (Which) γὰρ (for) μεῖζον (is greater), τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ἢ (or) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar) τὸ (-) ἁγιάζον (sanctifying) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift)? ²⁰ ὁ (The one) οὖν (therefore) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) πᾶσι (all things) τοῖς (that are) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²¹ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) ναῷ (temple) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) κατοικοῦντι (dwelling) αὐτόν (in it). ²² καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ὀμόσας (having sworn) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) ὀμνύει (swears) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) θρόνῳ (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the One) καθημένῳ (sitting) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ²³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) ἀποδεκατοῦτε (you pay tithes of) τὸ (-) ἡδύοσμον (mint), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἄνηθον (dill), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) κύμινον (cumin); καὶ (and) ἀφήκατε (you have neglected) τὰ (the) βαρύτερα (weightier matters) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law): τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faithfulness). ταῦτα (These) δὲ (now) ἔδει (it behooved you) ποιῆσαι (to do), κἀκεῖνα (those) μὴ (not) ἀφιέναι* (to be leaving aside). ²⁴ ὁδηγοὶ (Guides) τυφλοί (blind)! οἱ (Those) διϋλίζοντες (straining out) τὸν (the) κώνωπα (gnat), τὴν (the) δὲ (however) κάμηλον (camel) καταπίνοντες (swallowing)! ²⁵ Οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) καθαρίζετε (you cleanse) τὸ (the) ἔξωθεν (outside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος (dish); ἔσωθεν (inside), δὲ (however), γέμουσιν (they are full) ἐξ (of) ἁρπαγῆς (greed) καὶ (and) ἀκρασίας (self-indulgence). ²⁶ Φαρισαῖε (Pharisee) τυφλέ (blind)! καθάρισον (Cleanse) πρῶτον (first) τὸ (the) ἐντὸς (inside) τοῦ (of the) ποτηρίου (cup) ‹καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) παροψίδος› (dish) ἵνα (that) γένηται (might become) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) ἐκτὸς (outside) αὐτοῦ (of them) καθαρόν (clean).

²¹ Ἐν (In) αὐτῇ (the same) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour), ἠγαλλιάσατο (He rejoiced) [ἐν] (in) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐξομολογοῦμαί (I fully consent) σοι (to You), Πάτερ (Father), Κύριε (Lord) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ὅτι (that) ἀπέκρυψας (You have hidden) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπὸ (from) σοφῶν (wise) καὶ (and) συνετῶν (intelligent), καὶ (and) ἀπεκάλυψας (have revealed) αὐτὰ (them) νηπίοις (to little children); ναί (yes), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father), ὅτι (for) οὕτως (thus) εὐδοκία (well-pleasing) ἐγένετο (was it) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You). ²² Πάντα (All things) μοι (to Me) παρεδόθη (have been delivered) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me). καὶ (And) οὐδεὶς (no one) γινώσκει (knows) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father); καὶ (and) τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son), καὶ (and) ᾧ (to whom) ἐὰν (if) βούληται (might resolve) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀποκαλύψαι (to reveal Him).”

⁶⁶ Καὶ (And) ὡς (when) ἐγένετο (it became) ἡμέρα (day), συνήχθη (were gathered together) τὸ (the) πρεσβυτέριον (elderhood) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people), ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) τε (both) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes), καὶ (and) ἀπήγαγον (they led) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (council) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), ⁶⁷ “Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ), εἰπὸν (tell) ἡμῖν (us).” Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἐὰν (If) ὑμῖν (you) εἴπω (I should tell), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (would you believe); ⁶⁸ ἐὰν (if) δὲ (then) ἐρωτήσω (I should ask you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀποκριθῆτε (would you answer). ⁶⁹ ἀπὸ (From) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now on) δὲ (also) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

¹⁰ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) οὐ (not) γινώσκεις (know)?

²⁷ Ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτοῖς (them), “Εἶπον (I told) ὑμῖν (you) ἤδη (already), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠκούσατε (you did listen). τί (Why) πάλιν (again) θέλετε (do you wish) ἀκούειν (to hear)? μὴ (Not) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) θέλετε (do wish) αὐτοῦ (His) μαθηταὶ (disciples) γενέσθαι (to become)?”

¹⁸ Ἀποκαλύπτεται (Is revealed) γὰρ (for) ὀργὴ (the wrath) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (all) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) ἀδικίαν (unrighteousness) ἀνθρώπων (of men), τῶν (-) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἐν (by) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness) κατεχόντων (suppressing), ¹⁹ διότι (because) τὸ (the) γνωστὸν (known) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) φανερόν (manifest) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), ὁ (-) θεὸς (God) γὰρ (for) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἐφανέρωσεν (has revealed it). ²⁰ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀόρατα (invisible qualities) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) κτίσεως (the creation) κόσμου (of the world), τοῖς (by the) ποιήμασιν (things made) νοούμενα (being understood), καθορᾶται (are clearly seen), ἥ (the) τε (both) ἀΐδιος (eternal) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δύναμις (power) καὶ (and) θειότης (divinity), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀναπολογήτους (without excuse). ²¹ Διότι (For) γνόντες (having known) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) Θεὸν (God) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified Him), ἢ (or) ηὐχαρίστησαν (were thankful), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐματαιώθησαν (they became futile) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) διαλογισμοῖς (thinking) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐσκοτίσθη (was darkened) ἡ (the) ἀσύνετος (foolish) αὐτῶν (of them) καρδία (heart). ²² φάσκοντες (Professing) εἶναι (to be) σοφοὶ (wise), ἐμωράνθησαν (they became fools),

²⁸ Καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) οὐκ (not) ἐδοκίμασαν (they did see fit) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἔχειν (to have) ἐν (in their) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge), παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (to) ἀδόκιμον (a depraved) νοῦν (mind), ποιεῖν (to do) τὰ (things) μὴ (not) καθήκοντα (being proper);

¹⁵ ἀλλ’ (But) ἕως (unto) σήμερον (this day), ἡνίκα (when) ἂν (-) ἀναγινώσκηται (shall be read) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), κάλυμμα (a veil) ἐπὶ (over) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) αὐτῶν (of them) κεῖται (lies).

³ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) καὶ (indeed) ἔστιν (is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (to) τοῖς (those who) ἀπολλυμένοις (are perishing) ἐστὶν (it is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed), ⁴ ἐν (in) οἷς (whom) ὁ (the) θεὸς (god) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age) τούτου (this) ἐτύφλωσεν (has blinded) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) τῶν (of the) ἀπίστων (unbelieving), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αὐγάσαι (to beam forth) τὸν (the) φωτισμὸν (illumination) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) εἰκὼν (the image) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) ἀπάτῃ (deceit) ἀδικίας (of wickedness) τοῖς (unto those) ἀπολλυμένοις (perishing), ἀνθ’ (in return for) ὧν (which) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) οὐκ (not) ἐδέξαντο (they received), εἰς (in order for) τὸ (-) σωθῆναι (to be saved) αὐτούς (them). ¹¹ καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), πέμπει (will send) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐνέργειαν (a working) πλάνης (of delusion), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) πιστεῦσαι (to believe) αὐτοὺς (them) τῷ (what) ψεύδει (is false), ¹² ἵνα (in order that) κριθῶσιν (should be judged) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ἀλλὰ (but) εὐδοκήσαντες (having delighted) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (in unrighteousness).
