¹⁶ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) γογγυσταί (grumblers), μεμψίμοιροι (discontented), κατὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) αὐτῶν (own) πορευόμενοι (following); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὑπέρογκα (great swelling words), θαυμάζοντες (flattering) πρόσωπα (faces) ὠφελείας (profit) χάριν (for the sake of).

³⁰ καὶ (And) ἐγόγγυζον (were grumbling) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) αὐτῶν (of them) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) τελωνῶν (tax collectors) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) ἐσθίετε (do you eat) καὶ (and) πίνετε (drink)?”

² καὶ (And) διεγόγγυζον (were grumbling) οἵ (the) τε (both) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Οὗτος (This man) ἁμαρτωλοὺς (sinners) προσδέχεται (receives) καὶ (and) συνεσθίει (eats with) αὐτοῖς (them).”

⁷ καὶ (And) ἰδόντες (having seen it), πάντες (all) διεγόγγυζον (were grumbling), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Παρὰ (With) ἁμαρτωλῷ (a sinful) ἀνδρὶ (man) εἰσῆλθεν (He has entered) καταλῦσαι (to stay).”

⁴¹ Ἐγόγγυζον (Were grumbling) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him) ὅτι (because) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) καταβὰς (having come down) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven).”

⁶¹ Εἰδὼς (Knowing) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself) ὅτι (that) γογγύζουσιν (are grumbling) περὶ (about) τούτου (this) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τοῦτο (This) ὑμᾶς (you) σκανδαλίζει (does offend)?

¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) γογγύζετε (are you to grumble), καθάπερ (as) τινὲς (some) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐγόγγυσαν (grumbled), καὶ (and) ἀπώλοντο (perished) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) ὀλοθρευτοῦ (Destroyer).

¹⁶ Λέγω (I say) δέ (now), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) περιπατεῖτε (walk), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίαν (the desire) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (you should gratify).

²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

¹⁴ Πάντα (All things) ποιεῖτε (do) χωρὶς (without) γογγυσμῶν (murmurings) καὶ (and) διαλογισμῶν (disputings),

⁵ μὴ (not) ἐν (in) πάθει (the passion) ἐπιθυμίας (of lust), καθάπερ (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), τὰ (-) μὴ (not) εἰδότα (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God);

⁵ διαπαρατριβαὶ (and constant frictions) διεφθαρμένων (corrupted) ἀνθρώπων (among men) τὸν (-) νοῦν (in mind), καὶ (and) ἀπεστερημένων (destitute) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth), νομιζόντων (holding) πορισμὸν (a means of gain) εἶναι (to be) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness).

³ Ἔσται (There will be) γὰρ (for) καιρὸς (a time) ὅτε (when) τῆς (-) ὑγιαινούσης (sound) διδασκαλίας (teaching) οὐκ (not) ἀνέξονται (they will endure), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὰς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desires), ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ἐπισωρεύσουσιν (they will gather around them) διδασκάλους (teachers), κνηθόμενοι (having an itching) τὴν (-) ἀκοήν (ear),

¹⁴ ἕκαστος (A man) δὲ (however) πειράζεται (is tempted), ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desire) ἐξελκόμενος (being drawn away) καὶ (and) δελεαζόμενος (being enticed). ¹⁵ εἶτα (Then) ἡ (-) ἐπιθυμία (desire), συλλαβοῦσα (having conceived), τίκτει (gives birth to) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀποτελεσθεῖσα (having become fully grown), ἀποκύει (brings forth) θάνατον (death).

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers) μου (of Me), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) προσωπολημψίαις (partiality) ἔχετε (hold) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory). ² Ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) εἰσέλθῃ (might come) εἰς (into) συναγωγὴν (assembly) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀνὴρ (a man) χρυσοδακτύλιος (with a gold ring) ἐν (in) ἐσθῆτι (apparel) λαμπρᾷ (splendid), εἰσέλθῃ (might come in) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) πτωχὸς (a poor man) ἐν (in) ῥυπαρᾷ (shabby) ἐσθῆτι (apparel), ³ ἐπιβλέψητε (you should look) δὲ (also) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the one) φοροῦντα (wearing) τὴν (the) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) τὴν (-) λαμπρὰν (splendid) καὶ (and) εἴπητε (should say), “Σὺ (You) κάθου (sit you) ὧδε (here) καλῶς (honorably),” καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) πτωχῷ (poor) εἴπητε (should say), “Σὺ (You) στῆθι (stand) ἐκεῖ (there),” «ἢ (or), “Κάθου» (Sit) ὑπὸ (under) τὸ (the) ὑποπόδιόν (footstool) μου (of me),” ⁴ [καὶ] (then) οὐ (not) διεκρίθητε (have you made a distinction) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) ἐγένεσθε (have become) κριταὶ (judges with) διαλογισμῶν (thoughts) πονηρῶν (evil)? ⁵ Ἀκούσατε (Listen), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (my) ἀγαπητοί (beloved). οὐχ (Not) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐξελέξατο (has chosen) τοὺς (the) πτωχοὺς (poor) τῷ (-) κόσμῳ (in this world) πλουσίους (to be rich) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith) καὶ (and) κληρονόμους (heirs) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) ἧς (that) ἐπηγγείλατο (He promised) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) αὐτόν (Him)? ⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) ἠτιμάσατε (have dishonored) τὸν (the) πτωχόν (poor). οὐχ (Not) οἱ (the) πλούσιοι (rich) καταδυναστεύουσιν (are oppressing) ὑμῶν (you) καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἕλκουσιν (dragging) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) κριτήρια (court)? ⁷ οὐκ (Not) αὐτοὶ (they) βλασφημοῦσιν (are blaspheming) τὸ (the) καλὸν (good) ὄνομα (Name) τὸ (-) ἐπικληθὲν (having been called) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you)? ⁸ Εἰ (If) μέντοι (indeed) νόμον (the law) τελεῖτε (you keep) βασιλικὸν (royal), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) γραφήν (Scripture), “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself),” καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you are doing). ⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) προσωπολημπτεῖτε (you show partiality), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐργάζεσθε (you are committing), ἐλεγχόμενοι (being convicted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὡς (as) παραβάται (transgressors).

¹⁴ ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience), μὴ (not) συσχηματιζόμενοι (fashioning yourselves) ταῖς (to the) πρότερον (former) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγνοίᾳ (ignorance) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

¹¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), παρακαλῶ (I exhort you) ὡς (as) παροίκους (aliens) καὶ (and) παρεπιδήμους (sojourners), ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) τῶν (from) σαρκικῶν (fleshly) ἐπιθυμιῶν (desires), αἵτινες (which) στρατεύονται (war) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul),

² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ² καὶ (And) πολλοὶ (many) ἐξακολουθήσουσιν (will follow after) αὐτῶν (their) ταῖς (-) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), δι’ (through) οὓς (whom) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) βλασφημηθήσεται (will be maligned). ³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

¹⁰ μάλιστα (especially) δὲ (then) τοὺς (those) ὀπίσω (after) σαρκὸς (the flesh) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (the passion) μιασμοῦ (of defilement) πορευομένους (walking) καὶ (and) κυριότητος (authority) καταφρονοῦντας (despising). τολμηταὶ (Bold), αὐθάδεις (self-willed), δόξας (glorious ones) οὐ (not) τρέμουσιν (they tremble) βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming),

¹⁸ ὑπέρογκα (Arrogant) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητος (of vanity) φθεγγόμενοι (speaking words), δελεάζουσιν (they entice) ἐν (with) ἐπιθυμίαις (the passions) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) ἀσελγείαις (to sensuality) τοὺς (those) ὀλίγως (barely) ἀποφεύγοντας (escaping) τοὺς (from those) ἐν (in) πλάνῃ (error) ἀναστρεφομένους (living),

³ τοῦτο (this) πρῶτον (first) γινώσκοντες (knowing), ὅτι (that) ἐλεύσονται (will come) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτων (the last) τῶν (of the) ἡμερῶν (days) ἐν (with) ἐμπαιγμονῇ (scoffing) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (-) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (evil desires) αὐτῶν (of them) πορευόμενοι (following)

¹⁵ ποιῆσαι (to execute) κρίσιν (judgment) κατὰ (against) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) ἐλέγξαι (to convict) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) ἀσεβείας (of ungodliness) αὐτῶν (of them) ὧν (which) ἠσέβησαν (they have done in an ungodly way), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) σκληρῶν (harsh things) ὧν (that) ἐλάλησαν (have spoken) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly).”

¹⁸ ὅτι (that) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὑμῖν (to you), “Ἐπ’ (In) ἐσχάτου (the last) τοῦ (-) χρόνου (time) ἔσονται (there will be) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (after) τὰς (-) ἑαυτῶν (their own) ἐπιθυμίας (passions) πορευόμενοι (following), τῶν (-) ἀσεβειῶν (of ungodlinesses).”
