⁴ μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ἕκαστοι (each) σκοποῦντες (considering), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) ἑτέρων (of others) ἕκαστοι (each).

²⁷ καὶ (And) γὰρ (indeed) ἠσθένησεν (he was sick) παραπλήσιον (nearly) θανάτῳ (unto death), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἠλέησεν (had mercy on) αὐτόν (him); οὐκ (not) αὐτὸν (on him) δὲ (now) μόνον (alone), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐμέ (on me), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) λύπην (sorrow) ἐπὶ (upon) λύπην (sorrow) σχῶ (I should have).

¹³ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ἡμεῖς (we) εὐχαριστοῦμεν (give thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) ὅτι (that), παραλαβόντες (having received) λόγον (the word) ἀκοῆς (by your hearing) παρ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐδέξασθε (you accepted) οὐ (not) λόγον (the word) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλὰ (but) καθὼς (even as) ἀληθῶς (truly) ἐστὶν (it is), λόγον (the word) Θεοῦ (of God), ὃς (which) καὶ (also) ἐνεργεῖται (works) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) τοῖς (who) πιστεύουσιν (believe). ¹⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἐγενήθητε (became), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τῶν (of the) ἐκκλησιῶν (churches) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῶν (-) οὐσῶν (being) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ὅτι (For) τὰ (the same) αὐτὰ (as them), ἐπάθετε (suffered) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) συμφυλετῶν (countrymen), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also did) αὐτοὶ (they) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews),

¹⁹ τίς (Who is) γὰρ (for) ἡμῶν (our) ἐλπὶς (hope), ἢ (or) χαρὰ (joy), ἢ (or) στέφανος (crown) καυχήσεως (of boasting)? ἢ (Or) οὐχὶ (are not) καὶ (even) ὑμεῖς (you), ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐν (at) τῇ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) παρουσίᾳ (coming)? ²⁰ ὑμεῖς (You) γάρ (for) ἐστε (are) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) χαρά (joy).

³ Εὐχαριστεῖν (To thank) ὀφείλομεν (we ought) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) πάντοτε (always) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καθὼς (just as) ἄξιόν (fitting) ἐστιν (it is), ὅτι (because) ὑπεραυξάνει (is increasing exceedingly) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πλεονάζει (is abounding) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ἑνὸς (of one) ἑκάστου (each) πάντων (of all) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another);

⁵ ἀκούων (hearing) σου (of your) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ἣν (that) ἔχεις (you have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἁγίους (saints), ⁶ ὅπως (so that) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) τῆς (of the) πίστεώς (faith) σου (of you), ἐνεργὴς (effective) γένηται (might become) ἐν (in) ἐπιγνώσει (the acknowledgment) παντὸς (of every) ἀγαθοῦ (good thing) τοῦ (that is) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), εἰς (in) Χριστόν (Christ). ⁷ χαρὰν (Joy) γὰρ (for) πολλὴν (great) ἔσχον (I have), καὶ (and) παράκλησιν (encouragement) ἐπὶ (by occasion of) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) σου (of you), ὅτι (because) τὰ (the) σπλάγχνα (hearts) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints) ἀναπέπαυται (have been refreshed) διὰ (by) σοῦ (you), ἀδελφέ (brother).

¹² Πρὸ (Before) πάντων (all things) δέ (however), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), μὴ (not) ὀμνύετε (swear), μήτε (neither by) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), μήτε (nor) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), μήτε (nor) ἄλλον (other) τινὰ (any) ὅρκον (oath). ἤτω (Be) δὲ (however) ὑμῶν (of you) τὸ (the) “Ναὶ (Yes),” ναί (yes), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) “Οὒ (No),” οὔ (no), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (under) κρίσιν (judgment) πέσητε (you might fall).

⁸ πρὸ (above) πάντων (all things), τὴν (-) εἰς (among) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἀγάπην (love) ἐκτενῆ (fervent) ἔχοντες (having), ὅτι (because) ἀγάπη (love) καλύπτει (covers over) πλῆθος (a multitude) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins),

³ Ὡς (Accordingly), 〈τὰ〉 (-) πάντα (all things) ἡμῖν (to us) τῆς (the) θείας (divine) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὰ (-) πρὸς (toward) ζωὴν (life) καὶ (and) εὐσέβειαν (godliness) δεδωρημένης (has given), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐπιγνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (of the One) καλέσαντος (having called) ἡμᾶς (us) ἰδίᾳ (by His own) δόξῃ (glory) καὶ (and) ἀρετῇ (excellence), ⁴ δι’ (through) ὧν (which) τὰ (the) τίμια (precious) καὶ (and) μέγιστα (magnificent) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐπαγγέλματα (promises) δεδώρηται (He has given), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τούτων (these) γένησθε (you might become) θείας (of the divine) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) φύσεως (nature), ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (desire), φθορᾶς (decay). ⁵ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸ (very reason) τοῦτο (for this) δὲ (now), σπουδὴν (earnestness) πᾶσαν (all) παρεισενέγκαντες (having brought in), ἐπιχορηγήσατε (supplement) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τὴν (-) ἀρετήν (virtue), ἐν (into) δὲ (and) τῇ (-) ἀρετῇ (virtue) τὴν (-) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ⁶ ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness), ⁷ ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) τὴν (-) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly affection), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (brotherly affection) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love). ⁸ ταῦτα (These things) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (in you) ὑπάρχοντα (being) καὶ (and) πλεονάζοντα (abounding), οὐκ (neither) ἀργοὺς (idle) οὐδὲ (nor) ἀκάρπους (unfruitful) καθίστησιν (make you), εἰς (as to) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge). ⁹ ᾧ (In whomever) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πάρεστιν (are present) ταῦτα (these things), τυφλός (blind) ἐστιν (he is), μυωπάζων (being short sighted), λήθην (forgetfulness) λαβὼν (having received) τοῦ (of the) καθαρισμοῦ (purification) τῶν (the) πάλαι (former) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins).

¹⁸ αὐξάνετε (Grow) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) χάριτι (grace), καὶ (and) γνώσει (in knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (both) νῦν (now) καὶ (and) εἰς (to) ἡμέραν (the day) αἰῶνος (of eternity). ‹Ἀμήν› (Amen).

³ ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) γὰρ (for) λίαν (exceedingly) ἐρχομένων (coming) ἀδελφῶν (of the brothers) καὶ (and) μαρτυρούντων (bearing witness) σου (of your) τῇ (-) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) σὺ (you) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατεῖς (are walking). ⁴ μειζοτέραν (Greater) τούτων (than these things) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have) χαράν (joy), ἵνα (that) ἀκούω (I should hear of) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (my) τέκνα (children) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατοῦντα (walking). ⁵ Ἀγαπητέ (Beloved), πιστὸν (faithfully) ποιεῖς (you are doing) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐργάσῃ (you might have done) εἰς (toward) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (they are) ξένους (strangers), ⁶ οἳ (who) ἐμαρτύρησάν (testified) σου (of your) τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love) ἐνώπιον (before) ἐκκλησίας (the church), οὓς (whom) καλῶς (well) ποιήσεις (you will do), προπέμψας (having set forward) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁹ Οἶδά (I know) σου (your) τὴν (-) θλῖψιν (tribulation) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πτωχείαν (poverty) — ἀλλὰ (but) πλούσιος (rich) εἶ (you are) — καὶ (and) τὴν (the) βλασφημίαν (slander) ἐκ (of) τῶν (those) λεγόντων (claiming) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) εἶναι (to be) ἑαυτούς (themselves), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰσίν (are), ἀλλὰ (but) συναγωγὴ (a synagogue) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan).

⁶ ἀλλ’ (But) ὁ (the One) παρακαλῶν (comforting) τοὺς (the) ταπεινοὺς (downcast) παρεκάλεσεν (comforted) ἡμᾶς (us), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) Τίτου (of Titus), ⁷ οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (now) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐν (by) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (comfort) ᾗ (with which) παρεκλήθη (he was comforted) ἐφ’ (as to) ὑμῖν (you); ἀναγγέλλων (relating) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ἐπιπόθησιν (earnest desire), τὸν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ὀδυρμόν (mourning), τὸν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ζῆλον (zeal) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me), ὥστε (so as) με (for me) μᾶλλον (the more) χαρῆναι (to rejoice).

⁴ πάντοτε (always) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) δεήσει (supplication) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) τὴν (the) δέησιν (supplication) ποιούμενος (making)

⁷ καθὼς (just as) ἐμάθετε (you learned) ἀπὸ (from) Ἐπαφρᾶ (Epaphras), τοῦ (the) ἀγαπητοῦ (beloved) συνδούλου (fellow bond-servant) ἡμῶν (of us), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πιστὸς (faithful) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) ἡμῶν* (us), διάκονος (a servant) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ⁸ ὁ (the one) καὶ (also) δηλώσας (having made known) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) ἀγάπην (love) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit).

² διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (abiding) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) καὶ (and) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἔσται (that will be) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age):

⁴ Ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) λίαν (exceedingly) ὅτι (that) εὕρηκα (I have found) ἐκ (some of) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) σου (of you) περιπατοῦντας (walking) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἐλάβομεν (we received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father).

⁴ μειζοτέραν (Greater) τούτων (than these things) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have) χαράν (joy), ἵνα (that) ἀκούω (I should hear of) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (my) τέκνα (children) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατοῦντα (walking).

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little) χρόνον (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἐν (with) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is). περιπατεῖτε (Walk) ὡς (while) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκοτία (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καταλάβῃ (might overtake). καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) περιπατῶν (walking) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (knows) ποῦ (where) ὑπάγει (he is going). ³⁶ ὡς (While) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ἔχετε (you have), πιστεύετε (believe) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) φῶς (light), ἵνα (so that) υἱοὶ (sons) φωτὸς (of light) γένησθε (you may become).” Ταῦτα (These things) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἐκρύβη (He was hidden) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

¹⁴ Οὐκ (Not) ἐντρέπων (shaming) ὑμᾶς (you) γράφω (do I write) ταῦτα (these things), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) μου (my) ἀγαπητὰ (beloved), νουθετῶν (admonishing you). ¹⁵ ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) μυρίους (ten thousand) παιδαγωγοὺς (guardians) ἔχητε (you should have) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), ἀλλ’ (yet) οὐ (not) πολλοὺς (many) πατέρας (fathers); ἐν (in) γὰρ (for) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), ἐγὼ (I) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐγέννησα (have begotten).

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) ὅτε (when) εἶδον (I saw) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ὀρθοποδοῦσιν (they are walking uprightly) πρὸς (according to) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), εἶπον (I said) τῷ (-) Κηφᾷ (to Peter) ἔμπροσθεν (before) πάντων (all), “Εἰ (If) σὺ (you), Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew) ὑπάρχων (being), ἐθνικῶς (like a Gentile) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) Ἰουδαϊκῶς (like a Jew) ζῇς (live), πῶς (why) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἀναγκάζεις (do you compel) ἰουδαΐζειν (to Judaize)?

⁴⁵ Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) πιστὸς (faithful) δοῦλος (servant), καὶ (and) φρόνιμος (wise), ὃν (whom) κατέστησεν (has set) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) ἐπὶ (over) τῆς (the) οἰκετείας (household) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὴν (the) τροφὴν (food) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (season)?

⁴² Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) πιστὸς (faithful) οἰκονόμος (manager) ὁ (and the) φρόνιμος (wise), ὃν (whom) καταστήσει (will set) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) ἐπὶ (over) τῆς (the) θεραπείας (care of servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοῦ (-) διδόναι (to give them) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (season) τὸ (the) σιτομέτριον (measure of food)?

¹⁰ Ὁ (The one) πιστὸς (faithful) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little) ἄδικος (unrighteous), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) ἄδικός (unrighteous) ἐστιν (is). ¹¹ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀδίκῳ (unrighteous) μαμωνᾷ (wealth), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (the) ἀληθινὸν (true riches) τίς (who) ὑμῖν (to you) πιστεύσει (will entrust)? ¹² καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) τῷ (that which is) ἀλλοτρίῳ (of another), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (that which) ὑμέτερον* (is yours) τίς (who) δώσει (will give) ὑμῖν (to you)?

¹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἔχοντες (having) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ταύτην (this), καθὼς (as) ἠλεήθημεν (we received mercy), οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart). ² ἀλλὰ (But) ἀπειπάμεθα (we have renounced) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τῆς (-) αἰσχύνης (of shame), μὴ (not) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) μηδὲ (nor) δολοῦντες (falsifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) φανερώσει (by manifestation) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) συνιστάνοντες (commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πρὸς (to) πᾶσαν (every) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). ³ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) καὶ (indeed) ἔστιν (is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (to) τοῖς (those who) ἀπολλυμένοις (are perishing) ἐστὶν (it is) κεκαλυμμένον (concealed),

¹⁷ καὶ (And) πᾶν (everything), ὅ (which) τι (what) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (word) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (deed), πάντα (all) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) Πατρὶ (the Father) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹⁰ ἕκαστος (each) καθὼς (as) ἔλαβεν (has received) χάρισμα (a gift), εἰς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (each other) αὐτὸ (them) διακονοῦντες (serving), ὡς (as) καλοὶ (good) οἰκονόμοι (stewards) ποικίλης (of the manifold) χάριτος (grace) Θεοῦ (of God): ¹¹ εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

²¹ Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Εὖ (Well done), δοῦλε (servant) ἀγαθὲ (good) καὶ (and) πιστέ (faithful)! ἐπὶ (Over) ὀλίγα (a few things) ἦς (you were) πιστός (faithful); ἐπὶ (over) πολλῶν (many things) σε (you) καταστήσω (will I set). εἴσελθε (Enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) σου (of you)!’ ²² Προσελθὼν (Having come) ‹δὲ› (then) καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τὰ (with the) δύο (two) τάλαντα (talents), εἶπεν (he said), ‘Κύριε (Master), δύο (two) τάλαντά (talents) μοι (to me) παρέδωκας (you did deliver). ἴδε (Behold), ἄλλα (more) δύο (two) τάλαντα (talents) ἐκέρδησα (have I gained).’ ²³ Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Εὖ (Well done), δοῦλε (servant) ἀγαθὲ (good) καὶ (and) πιστέ (faithful)! ἐπὶ (Over) ὀλίγα (a few things) ἦς (you were) πιστός (faithful); ἐπὶ (over) πολλῶν (many things) σε (you) καταστήσω (will I set). εἴσελθε (Enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) σου (of you)!’

³ Οἱ (They) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) προπεμφθέντες (having been sent forward) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) διήρχοντο (were passing through) τήν (-) τε (both) Φοινίκην (Phoenicia) καὶ (and) Σαμάρειαν (Samaria), ἐκδιηγούμενοι (relating in detail) τὴν (the) ἐπιστροφὴν (conversion) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles), καὶ (and) ἐποίουν (they were bringing) χαρὰν (joy) μεγάλην (great) πᾶσιν (to all) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers).

²⁹ ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) εἰδωλοθύτων (from things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) αἵματος (from blood), καὶ (and) πνικτῶν (from what is strangled), καὶ (and) πορνείας (from sexual immorality). ἐξ (From) ὧν (these) διατηροῦντες (keeping) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), εὖ (well) πράξετε (you will do). Ἔρρωσθε (Farewell).”

⁵ ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἐγένετο (it happened that) ἐξαρτίσαι (had completed) ἡμᾶς (we) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), ἐξελθόντες (having set out), ἐπορευόμεθα (we journeyed), προπεμπόντων (accompanying) ἡμᾶς (us) πάντων (all) σὺν (with) γυναιξὶ (wives) καὶ (and) τέκνοις (children), ἕως (as far as) ἔξω (outside) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city). καὶ (And) θέντες (having bowed) τὰ (the) γόνατα (knees) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) αἰγιαλὸν (shore), προσευξάμενοι (having prayed),

²⁴ ὡς (whenever) ἂν (-) πορεύωμαι (I may go) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Σπανίαν (Spain) ἐλπίζω (I hope) γὰρ (for) διαπορευόμενος (going through) θεάσασθαι (to see) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you) προπεμφθῆναι (to be equipped) ἐκεῖ (there), ἐὰν (if) ὑμῶν (of you) πρῶτον (first) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part) ἐμπλησθῶ (I should be filled).

¹⁶ καὶ (and) δι’ (through) ὑμῶν (you) διελθεῖν (to pass through) εἰς (into) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia), καὶ (and) πάλιν (again) ἀπὸ (from) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you) προπεμφθῆναι (to be set forward) εἰς (to) τὴν (-) Ἰουδαίαν (Judea).

¹⁴ Πλὴν (But) καλῶς (well) ἐποιήσατε (you did), συνκοινωνήσαντές (having fellowship in) μου (my) τῇ (-) θλίψει (affliction).

¹⁰ περιπατῆσαι (to walk) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord): εἰς (in) πᾶσαν (all) ἀρεσκείαν (pleasing), ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) ἀγαθῷ (good), καρποφοροῦντες (bringing forth fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενοι (growing) τῇ (in the) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹² παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) παραμυθούμενοι (comforting) καὶ (and) μαρτυρόμενοι (charging) εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (who) καλοῦντος (calls) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) βασιλείαν (kingdom) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory).

¹³ Ζηνᾶν (Zenas) τὸν (the) νομικὸν (lawyer) καὶ (and) Ἀπολλῶν (Apollos) σπουδαίως (earnestly) πρόπεμψον (equip), ἵνα (so that) μηδὲν (nothing) αὐτοῖς (to them) λείπῃ (should be lacking).

²⁰ ποῖον (What kind of) γὰρ (for) κλέος (credit is it), εἰ (if) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμενοι (being struck) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure)? ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) ἀγαθοποιοῦντες (doing good) καὶ (and) πάσχοντες (suffering) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure), τοῦτο (this is) χάρις (commendable) παρὰ (before) Θεῷ (God).

¹² Δημητρίῳ (To Demetrius) μεμαρτύρηται (witness has been given) ὑπὸ (by) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) ὑπὸ (by) αὐτῆς (itself) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (also) μαρτυροῦμεν (bear witness), καὶ (and) οἶδας (you know) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is).

⁴¹ Οἱ (They) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἐπορεύοντο (departed), χαίροντες (rejoicing), ἀπὸ (from) προσώπου (the presence) τοῦ (of the) συνεδρίου (Council), ὅτι (that) κατηξιώθησαν (they had been counted worthy) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) Ὀνόματος (Name) ἀτιμασθῆναι (to suffer dishonor).

⁴ Οἱ (Those) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) διασπαρέντες (having been scattered) διῆλθον (went about), εὐαγγελιζόμενοι (preaching) τὸν (the) λόγον (word).

¹⁶ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ὑποδείξω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (how much) δεῖ (it behooves) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματός (name) μου (of Me) παθεῖν (to suffer).”

¹² εἰ (If) ἄλλοι (others) τῆς (of the) ὑμῶν (over you) ἐξουσίας (authority) μετέχουσιν (partake), οὐ (should not) μᾶλλον (more) ἡμεῖς (we)? ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐχρησάμεθα (we did use) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (right) ταύτῃ (this). ἀλλὰ (Instead), πάντα (all things) στέγομεν (we bear), ἵνα (so that) μή (not) τινα (any) ἐνκοπὴν (hindrance) δῶμεν (we should place) τῷ (to the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of) Χριστοῦ (Christ). ¹³ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (in the) ἱερὰ (temple) ἐργαζόμενοι (working), τὰ (the things) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple) ἐσθίουσιν (eat); οἱ (those) τῷ (at the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) παρεδρεύοντες (attending), τῷ (in the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) συμμερίζονται (partake)? ¹⁴ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also), ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) διέταξεν (has prescribed) τοῖς (to those) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) καταγγέλλουσιν (proclaiming) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) ζῆν (to live). ¹⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) κέχρημαι (have used) οὐδενὶ (none) τούτων (of these). οὐκ (Neither) ἔγραψα (have I written) δὲ (now), ταῦτα (these things) ἵνα (that) οὕτως (thus) γένηται (it should be) ἐν (with) ἐμοί (me); καλὸν (it were good) γάρ (for) μοι (me) μᾶλλον (rather) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), ἢ (than) τὸ (the) καύχημά (boasting) μου (of me), οὐδεὶς (anyone) κενώσει (will make void).

¹⁸ τίς (What) οὖν (then) μού (of me) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μισθός (reward)? ἵνα (That) εὐαγγελιζόμενος (in preaching the gospel) ἀδάπανον (free of charge), θήσω (I should offer) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) καταχρήσασθαι (to use up) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (right) μου (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel).

⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) κηρύσσομεν (do we proclaim), ἀλλὰ (but) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Κύριον (Lord); ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) δὲ (now), δούλους (servants) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (for the sake of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

⁷ Ἢ (Or) ἁμαρτίαν (a sin) ἐποίησα (did I commit), ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἵνα (so that) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑψωθῆτε (might be exalted), ὅτι (because) δωρεὰν (freely) τὸ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) εὐηγγελισάμην (I preached) ὑμῖν (to you)? ⁸ ἄλλας (Other) ἐκκλησίας (churches) ἐσύλησα (I robbed), λαβὼν (having received) ὀψώνιον (support) πρὸς (for) τὴν (the) ὑμῶν (toward you) διακονίαν (service). ⁹ καὶ (And) παρὼν (being present) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ὑστερηθεὶς (having been in need), οὐ (not) κατενάρκησα (I did burden) οὐθενός (no one); τὸ (-) γὰρ (for) ὑστέρημά (the need) μου (of me) προσανεπλήρωσαν (completely filled up) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) ἐλθόντες (having come) ἀπὸ (from) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything) ἀβαρῆ (unburdensome) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) ὑμῖν (to you) ἐτήρησα (I kept), καὶ (and) τηρήσω (will keep).

¹³ τί (In what) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is it) ὃ (that) ἡσσώθητε (you were inferior) ὑπὲρ (beyond) τὰς (the) λοιπὰς (rest) ἐκκλησίας (of the churches), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὅτι (that) αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κατενάρκησα (did burden) ὑμῶν (you)? χαρίσασθέ (Forgive) μοι (me) τὴν (the) ἀδικίαν (wrong) ταύτην (this)!

²⁴ Νῦν (Now) χαίρω (I rejoice) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) παθήμασιν (sufferings) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), καὶ (and) ἀνταναπληρῶ (I am filling up) τὰ (that which) ὑστερήματα (is lacking) τῶν (of the) θλίψεων (tribulations) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἐκκλησία (church),

³ καὶ (And) ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) ἔχεις (you have), καὶ (and) ἐβάστασας (have endured) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) κεκοπίακες (have grown weary).

¹⁴ καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) μὴ (not) δέξηται (will receive) ὑμᾶς (you), μηδὲ (nor) ἀκούσῃ (will hear) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐξερχόμενοι (going forth) ἔξω (out) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἢ (or) τῆς (of the) πόλεως (city) ἐκείνης (that), ἐκτινάξατε (shake off) τὸν (the) κονιορτὸν (dust) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you)!

⁴⁰ Ὁ (The One) δεχόμενος (receiving) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐμὲ (Me) δεχόμενος (receiving), δέχεται (receives) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me).

⁷ Κἀκεῖνος (And he) ἔσωθεν (from within) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἴπῃ (will say), ‘Μή (Not) μοι (me) κόπους (trouble) πάρεχε (cause); ἤδη (already) ἡ (the) θύρα (door) κέκλεισται (has been shut), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) παιδία (children) μου (of me) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) κοίτην (bed) εἰσίν (are); οὐ (not) δύναμαι (I am able) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), δοῦναί (to give) σοι (to you).’

⁵ Τί (Who) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos)? τί (Who) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) Παῦλος (Paul)? διάκονοι (Servants) δι’ (through) ὧν (whom) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed), καὶ (also) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκεν (has given)? ⁶ ἐγὼ (I) ἐφύτευσα (planted), Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos) ἐπότισεν (watered), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ηὔξανεν (kept it growing). ⁷ ὥστε (So) οὔτε (neither) ὁ (the one) φυτεύων (planting) ἐστίν (is) τι (anything), οὔτε (nor) ὁ (the one) ποτίζων (watering), ἀλλ’ (but only) ὁ (the One) αὐξάνων (giving growth)— Θεός (God). ⁸ ὁ (The one) φυτεύων (planting) δὲ (now) καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ποτίζων (watering), ἕν (one) εἰσιν (are); ἕκαστος (each) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) ἴδιον (own) μισθὸν (reward) λήμψεται (will receive), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἴδιον (own) κόπον (labor). ⁹ Θεοῦ (Of God) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are) συνεργοί (fellow workers); Θεοῦ (God’s) γεώργιον (field), Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκοδομή (building) ἐστε (you are).

¹⁰ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) ἔλθῃ (comes) Τιμόθεος (Timothy), βλέπετε (see) ἵνα (that) ἀφόβως (without fear) γένηται (he might be) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) ἔργον (work) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐργάζεται (he is doing), ὡς (as) κἀγώ (also I). ¹¹ μή (Not) τις (anyone) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (him) ἐξουθενήσῃ (should despise). προπέμψατε (Equip) δὲ (however) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace), ἵνα (so that) ἔλθῃ (he might come) πρός (to) με (me); ἐκδέχομαι (I am expecting) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers).

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

² Χωρήσατε (Make room for) ἡμᾶς (us); οὐδένα (no one) ἠδικήσαμεν (we have wronged), οὐδένα (no one) ἐφθείραμεν (we have corrupted), οὐδένα (no one) ἐπλεονεκτήσαμεν (we have exploited). ³ πρὸς (For) κατάκρισιν (condemnation) οὐ (not) λέγω (I speak); προείρηκα (I have before said) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐστε (you are), εἰς (for us) τὸ (-) συναποθανεῖν (to die together), καὶ (and) συζῆν* (to live together).

¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐὰν (if) ἔλθω (I might come), ὑπομνήσω (I will bring to remembrance) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (which) ποιεῖ (he is doing), λόγοις (with words) πονηροῖς (evil) φλυαρῶν (prating against) ἡμᾶς (us); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀρκούμενος (being satisfied) ἐπὶ (with) τούτοις (these), οὔτε (neither) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐπιδέχεται (he receives) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) βουλομένους (purposing), κωλύει (he forbids), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) ἐκβάλλει (he casts them out).

⁴⁰ Ὁ (The One) δεχόμενος (receiving) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐμὲ (Me) δεχόμενος (receiving), δέχεται (receives) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me). ⁴¹ ὁ (The one) δεχόμενος (receiving) προφήτην (a prophet) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) προφήτου (of a prophet), μισθὸν (the reward) προφήτου (of a prophet) λήμψεται (will receive); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) δεχόμενος (receiving) δίκαιον (a righteous man) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) δικαίου (of a righteous man), μισθὸν (the reward) δικαίου (of a righteous man) λήμψεται (will receive). ⁴² καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἂν* (-) ποτίσῃ (shall give to drink) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) ποτήριον (a cup) ψυχροῦ (of cold water), μόνον (only) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) μαθητοῦ (of a disciple), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀπολέσῃ (shall he lose) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτοῦ (of him).”

²⁰ Τότε (Then) προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) αὐτῆς (of her), προσκυνοῦσα (kneeling down), καὶ (and) αἰτοῦσά (asking) τι (something) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him). ²¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Τί (What) θέλεις (do you desire)?” Λέγει (She says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Εἰπὲ (Say) ἵνα (that) καθίσωσιν (might sit) οὗτοι (these) οἱ (-) δύο (two) υἱοί (sons) μου (of mine), εἷς (one) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) ‹σου› (of You) καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left hand) σου (of You), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) σου (of You).” ²² Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (you know) τί (what) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask for). δύνασθε (Are you able) πιεῖν (to drink) τὸ (the) ποτήριον (cup) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) μέλλω (am about) πίνειν (to drink)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Δυνάμεθα (We are able).” ²³ Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὸ (-) μὲν (Indeed) ποτήριόν (the cup) μου (of Me) πίεσθε (You will drink), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) καθίσαι (to sit) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐμὸν (Mine) τοῦτο (this) δοῦναι (to give), ἀλλ’ (but to those) οἷς (for whom) ἡτοίμασται (it has been prepared) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me).” ²⁴ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard this), οἱ (the) δέκα (ten) ἠγανάκτησαν (were indignant) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) δύο (two) ἀδελφῶν (brothers). ²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) αὐτοὺς (them), εἶπεν (said), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) μεγάλοι (great ones) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ²⁶ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) ἔσται* (will it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ²⁷ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (wishes) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to be) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (he will be) ὑμῶν (your) δοῦλος (slave); ²⁸ ὥσπερ (even as) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

⁴ δεσμεύουσιν (They tie up) δὲ (-) φορτία (burdens) βαρέα (heavy) [καὶ (and) δυσβάστακτα] (hard to bear) καὶ (and) ἐπιτιθέασιν (lay them) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὤμους (shoulders) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men); αὐτοὶ (themselves) δὲ (however), τῷ (with) δακτύλῳ (finger) αὐτῶν (of them), οὐ (not) θέλουσιν (are they willing) κινῆσαι (to move) αὐτά (them). ⁵ Πάντα (All) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them), ποιοῦσιν (they do) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) θεαθῆναι (to be seen) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). πλατύνουσιν (They broaden) γὰρ (for) τὰ (the) φυλακτήρια (phylacteries) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) μεγαλύνουσιν (enlarge) τὰ (their) κράσπεδα (tassels). ⁶ φιλοῦσιν (They love) δὲ (now) τὴν (the) πρωτοκλισίαν (chief place) ἐν (at) τοῖς (the) δείπνοις (banquets), καὶ (and) τὰς (the) πρωτοκαθεδρίας (first seats) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues), ⁷ καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀσπασμοὺς (greetings) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀγοραῖς (marketplaces), καὶ (and) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi).’ ⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) κληθῆτε (shall be called) ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi);’ εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (Teacher), πάντες (all) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (are).

³⁴ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἐσιώπων (they were silent), πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) γὰρ (for) διελέχθησαν (they had been discussing) ἐν (along) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (road) τίς (which was) μείζων (greatest).

³⁷ “Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ἓν (one) τῶν (-) τοιούτων (of such) παιδίων (little children) δέξηται (shall receive) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἐμὲ (Me) δέχηται (shall receive), οὐκ (not) ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me).”

³⁵ Καὶ (And) προσπορεύονται (come up) αὐτῷ (to Him) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννης (John), οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee), λέγοντες (saying to) αὐτῷ (Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), θέλομεν (we desire) ἵνα (that) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσωμέν (we might ask) σε (you), ποιήσῃς (You would do) ἡμῖν (for us).” ³⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (What) θέλετε (do you desire) με (Me) ποιήσω (to do) ὑμῖν (for you)?” ³⁷ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Δὸς (Grant) ἡμῖν (to us) ἵνα (that) εἷς (one) σου (of us) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (Your right hand), καὶ (and) εἷς (one) ἐξ (at) ἀριστερῶν (Your left hand), καθίσωμεν (we might sit) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) σου (of You).” ³⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (you know) τί (what) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask). δύνασθε (Are you able) πιεῖν (to drink) τὸ (the) ποτήριον (cup) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) πίνω (drink), ἢ (and) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) βαπτίζομαι (am baptized), βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized with)?” ³⁹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Δυνάμεθα (We are able).” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὸ (The) ποτήριον (cup) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) πίνω (drink), πίεσθε (you will drink); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) βάπτισμα (baptism) ὃ (which) ἐγὼ (I) βαπτίζομαι (am baptized), βαπτισθήσεσθε (you will be baptized with); ⁴⁰ τὸ (-) δὲ (but) καθίσαι (to sit) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) μου (of Me) ἢ (or) ἐξ (at) εὐωνύμων (the left hand), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐμὸν (Mine) δοῦναι (to give), ἀλλ’ (but to those) οἷς (for whom) ἡτοίμασται (it has been prepared).” ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard this), οἱ (the) δέκα (ten) ἤρξαντο (began) ἀγανακτεῖν (to be indignant) περὶ (about) Ἰακώβου (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννου (John). ⁴² καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called near) αὐτοὺς (them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) δοκοῦντες (being accounted) ἄρχειν (to rule over) τῶν (the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατακυριεύουσιν (exercise lordship over) αὐτῶν (them); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεγάλοι (great ones) αὐτῶν (of them) κατεξουσιάζουσιν (exercise authority over) αὐτῶν (them). ⁴³ οὐχ (Not) οὕτως (thus) δέ (however) ἐστιν (shall it be) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) μέγας (great) γενέσθαι (to become) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἔσται (will be) ὑμῶν (your) διάκονος (servant); ⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) θέλῃ (desires) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) εἶναι (to become) πρῶτος (first), ἔσται (will be) πάντων (of all) δοῦλος (slave). ⁴⁵ καὶ (Even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

⁴⁸ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) δέξηται (shall receive) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) παιδίον (child) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) ἐμὲ (Me) δέξηται (shall receive), δέχεται (receives) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me). ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) μικρότερος (least) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (you) ὑπάρχων (being), οὗτός (he) ἐστιν (shall be) μέγας (great).”

²⁴ Ἐγένετο (There was) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) φιλονεικία (a dispute) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them), τὸ (-) τίς (which) αὐτῶν (of them) δοκεῖ (is thought) εἶναι (to be) μείζων (the greatest). ²⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κυριεύουσιν (rule over) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἐξουσιάζοντες (exercising authority over) αὐτῶν (them), εὐεργέται (benefactors) καλοῦνται (are called). ²⁶ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) οὐχ (not) οὕτως (thus shall be). ἀλλ’ (Instead), ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), γινέσθω (let him be) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἡγούμενος (leading), ὡς (as) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving). ²⁷ τίς (Who) γὰρ (for) μείζων (is greater), ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining) ἢ (or) ὁ (the one) διακονῶν (serving)? οὐχὶ (Is not) ὁ (the one) ἀνακείμενος (reclining)? ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰμι (am), ὡς (as) ὁ (the One) διακονῶν (serving).

¹⁰ τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (in brotherly love) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another) φιλόστοργοι (devoted) τῇ (-) τιμῇ (in honor), ἀλλήλους (one another) προηγούμενοι (esteeming),

³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves), ⁴ μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ἕκαστοι (each) σκοποῦντες (considering), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) ἑτέρων (of others) ἕκαστοι (each). ⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was):

⁷ Δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἐπίσκοπον (overseer) ἀνέγκλητον (blameless) εἶναι (to be), ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκονόμον (steward); μὴ (not) αὐθάδη (self-willed), μὴ (not) ὀργίλον (quick tempered), μὴ (not) πάροινον (given to wine), μὴ (not) πλήκτην (a striker), μὴ (not) αἰσχροκερδῆ (greedy of base gain), ⁸ ἀλλὰ (but) φιλόξενον (hospitable), φιλάγαθον (a lover of good), σώφρονα (self-controlled), δίκαιον (upright), ὅσιον (holy), ἐγκρατῆ (and disciplined); ⁹ ἀντεχόμενον (holding to) τοῦ (the) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) πιστοῦ (faithful) λόγου (word), ἵνα (that) δυνατὸς (able) ᾖ (he may be) καὶ (both) παρακαλεῖν (to encourage) ἐν (with) τῇ (-) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching) τῇ (-) ὑγιαινούσῃ (sound), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ἀντιλέγοντας (contradicting it) ἐλέγχειν (to convict). ¹⁰ Εἰσὶν (There are) γὰρ (for) πολλοὶ (many) ‹καὶ› (also) ἀνυπότακτοι (insubordinate), ματαιολόγοι (empty talkers), καὶ (and) φρεναπάται (deceivers), μάλιστα (especially) οἱ (those) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) περιτομῆς (circumcision), ¹¹ οὓς (whom) δεῖ (it is necessary) ἐπιστομίζειν (to silence), οἵτινες (who) ὅλους (whole) οἴκους (households) ἀνατρέπουσιν (overthrow), διδάσκοντες (teaching) ἃ (things that they) μὴ (not) δεῖ (ought), αἰσχροῦ (base) κέρδους (gain) χάριν (for the sake of). ¹² εἶπέν (Said) τις (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), ἴδιος (own) αὐτῶν (of them), προφήτης (a prophet), “Κρῆτες (Cretans) ἀεὶ (are always) ψεῦσται (liars), κακὰ (evil) θηρία (beasts), γαστέρες (gluttons) ἀργαί (lazy).” ¹³ Ἡ (The) μαρτυρία (testimony) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἀληθής (true), δι’ (for) ἣν (which) αἰτίαν (cause) ἔλεγχε (rebuke) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀποτόμως (severely), ἵνα (so that) ὑγιαίνωσιν (they may be sound) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith), ¹⁴ μὴ (not) προσέχοντες (giving heed) Ἰουδαϊκοῖς (to Jewish) μύθοις (myths) καὶ (and) ἐντολαῖς (the commandments) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀποστρεφομένων (turning away from) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth). ¹⁵ Πάντα (All things are) καθαρὰ (pure) τοῖς (to the) καθαροῖς (pure); τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) μεμιαμμένοις (being defiled) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving), οὐδὲν (nothing) καθαρόν (is pure); ἀλλὰ (Instead), μεμίανται (are defiled) αὐτῶν (their) καὶ (both) ὁ (-) νοῦς (mind) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) συνείδησις (conscience). ¹⁶ Θεὸν (God) ὁμολογοῦσιν (they profess) εἰδέναι (to know); τοῖς (in) δὲ (however) ἔργοις (works), ἀρνοῦνται (they deny Him), βδελυκτοὶ (detestable) ὄντες (being) καὶ (and) ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), καὶ (and) πρὸς (for) πᾶν (any) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good), ἀδόκιμοι (unfit).

⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) οὖν (therefore) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπολαμβάνειν (to receive) τοὺς (-) τοιούτους (such men), ἵνα (so that) συνεργοὶ (fellow workers) γινώμεθα (we may be) τῇ (in the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

²² Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) μισήσωσιν (shall hate) ὑμᾶς (you) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), καὶ (and) ὅταν (when) ἀφορίσωσιν (they shall exclude) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ὀνειδίσωσιν (shall insult you), καὶ (and) ἐκβάλωσιν (shall cast out) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) ὑμῶν (of you) ὡς (as) πονηρὸν (evil), ἕνεκα (on account of) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).

²² Ταῦτα (These things) εἶπαν (said) οἱ (the) γονεῖς (parents) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (because) ἐφοβοῦντο (they were afraid) τοὺς (of the) Ἰουδαίους (Jews); ἤδη (already) γὰρ (for) συνετέθειντο (had agreed together) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ἵνα (that) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁμολογήσῃ (should confess) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀποσυνάγωγος (expelled from the synagogue) γένηται (he would be).

³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἐν (In) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) σὺ (you) ἐγεννήθης (were born) ὅλος (entirely), καὶ (and) σὺ (you) διδάσκεις (teach) ἡμᾶς (us)?” καὶ (And) ἐξέβαλον (they cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out). ³⁵ Ἤκουσεν (Heard) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ὅτι (that) ἐξέβαλον (they had cast) αὐτὸν (him) ἔξω (out), καὶ (and) εὑρὼν (having found) αὐτὸν (him), εἶπεν (He said), “Σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (Man)?”

¹ Αὐτὸς (Myself) δὲ (now) ἐγὼ (I), Παῦλος (Paul), παρακαλῶ (exhort) ὑμᾶς (you) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) πραΰτητος (meekness) καὶ (and) ἐπιεικείας (gentleness) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὃς (who) κατὰ (as to) πρόσωπον (appearance) μὲν (indeed) ταπεινὸς (am humble) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀπὼν (being absent) δὲ (however) θαρρῶ (am bold) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you). ² δέομαι (I implore you) δὲ (now) τὸ (that), μὴ (not) παρὼν (being present), θαρρῆσαι (to be bold) τῇ (with the) πεποιθήσει (confidence) ᾗ (with which) λογίζομαι (I reckon) τολμῆσαι (to be daring) ἐπί (toward) τινας (some) τοὺς (-) λογιζομένους (reckoning) ἡμᾶς (us) ὡς (as) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) περιπατοῦντας (walking). ³ Ἐν (In) σαρκὶ (flesh) γὰρ (for) περιπατοῦντες (walking), οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) στρατευόμεθα (do we wage war). ⁴ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὅπλα (weapons) τῆς (of the) στρατείας (warfare) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (are not) σαρκικὰ (fleshly), ἀλλὰ (but) δυνατὰ (powerful) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (divinely) πρὸς (to) καθαίρεσιν (the demolition) ὀχυρωμάτων (of strongholds), ⁵ λογισμοὺς (arguments) καθαιροῦντες (overthrowing), καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) ὕψωμα (high thing) ἐπαιρόμενον (lifting itself up) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντες (taking captive) πᾶν (every) νόημα (thought) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ὑπακοὴν (obedience) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ⁶ καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἑτοίμῳ (readiness) ἔχοντες (having), ἐκδικῆσαι (to avenge) πᾶσαν (all) παρακοήν (disobedience), ὅταν (when) πληρωθῇ (might have been fulfilled) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) ὑπακοή (obedience). ⁷ Τὰ (The things) κατὰ (according to) πρόσωπον (appearance) βλέπετε (are you looking). εἴ (If) τις (anyone) πέποιθεν (is persuaded) ἑαυτῷ (in himself) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εἶναι (to be), τοῦτο (this) λογιζέσθω (let him reckon) πάλιν (again) ἐφ’ (within) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), ὅτι (that) καθὼς (as) αὐτὸς (he) Χριστοῦ (is of Christ), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also are) ἡμεῖς (we). ⁸ ἐάν (If) τε (even) γὰρ (for) περισσότερόν (more abundantly) τι (somewhat) καυχήσωμαι (I should boast) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐξουσίας (authority) ἡμῶν (of us), ἧς (which) ἔδωκεν (has given us) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) εἰς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (building you up) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰς (for) καθαίρεσιν (tearing down) ὑμῶν (you), οὐκ (not) αἰσχυνθήσομαι (I will be ashamed), ⁹ ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) δόξω (I might seem) ὡς (as if) ἂν (-) ἐκφοβεῖν (to frighten) ὑμᾶς (you) διὰ (by means of) τῶν (the) ἐπιστολῶν (letters). ¹⁰ “Ὅτι (For) Αἱ (the) ἐπιστολαὶ (letters),” μέν (indeed) φησίν (they say), “Βαρεῖαι (are weighty) καὶ (and) ἰσχυραί (strong), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) παρουσία (the presence) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ἀσθενὴς (weak), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (speech) ἐξουθενημένος (having been ignored).” ¹¹ τοῦτο (This) λογιζέσθω (let reckon) ὁ (-) τοιοῦτος (such a one), ὅτι (that) οἷοί (such as) ἐσμεν (we are) τῷ (-) λόγῳ (in word) δι’ (by) ἐπιστολῶν (letters) ἀπόντες (being absent), τοιοῦτοι (such we are) καὶ (also) παρόντες (being present) τῷ (-) ἔργῳ (in action).

² Προείρηκα (I have warned) καὶ (and) προλέγω (I warn), ὡς (as) παρὼν (being present) τὸ (the) δεύτερον (second time), καὶ (and) ἀπὼν (being absent) νῦν (now) τοῖς (those) προημαρτηκόσιν (having sinned before), καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) λοιποῖς (rest) πᾶσιν (all), ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ἔλθω (I come) εἰς (to) τὸ (the same) πάλιν (again), οὐ (not) φείσομαι (I will spare anyone),

⁵ Ἀγαπητέ (Beloved), πιστὸν (faithfully) ποιεῖς (you are doing) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐργάσῃ (you might have done) εἰς (toward) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (they are) ξένους (strangers),

²⁰ πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) φαῦλα (evil) πράσσων (practicing) μισεῖ (hates) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐλεγχθῇ (may be exposed) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him);

²⁷ τὰ (The) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (of Me), τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούουσιν (hear), κἀγὼ (and I) γινώσκω (know) αὐτά (them), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθοῦσίν (they follow) μοι (Me);

²⁶ ἐὰν (If) ἐμοί (Me) τις (anyone) διακονῇ (serves), ἐμοὶ (Me) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) διάκονος (servant) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) ἔσται (will be). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἐμοὶ (Me) διακονῇ (serves), τιμήσει (will honor) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father).

¹⁶ παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), μιμηταί (imitators) μου (of me) γίνεσθε (become).

¹⁷ Συμμιμηταί (Imitators together) μου (of me) γίνεσθε (be), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καὶ (and) σκοπεῖτε (observe) τοὺς (those) οὕτω* (thus) περιπατοῦντας (walking), καθὼς (as) ἔχετε (you have) τύπον (for a pattern) ἡμᾶς (us).

⁶ Καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐγενήθητε (became), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), δεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἐν (in) θλίψει (tribulation) πολλῇ (much), μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (the joy) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

¹⁴ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) μιμηταὶ (imitators) ἐγενήθητε (became), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τῶν (of the) ἐκκλησιῶν (churches) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῶν (-) οὐσῶν (being) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ὅτι (For) τὰ (the same) αὐτὰ (as them), ἐπάθετε (suffered) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) συμφυλετῶν (countrymen), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also did) αὐτοὶ (they) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews),

¹⁰ Σὺ (You) δὲ (however) παρηκολούθησάς (have closely followed) μου (my) τῇ (-) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching), τῇ (-) ἀγωγῇ (conduct), τῇ (-) προθέσει (purpose), τῇ (-) πίστει (faith), τῇ (-) μακροθυμίᾳ (patience), τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (love), τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance),

¹² ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) νωθροὶ (sluggish) γένησθε (you may be), μιμηταὶ (imitators) δὲ (however) τῶν (of those) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith) καὶ (and) μακροθυμίας (patience) κληρονομούντων (inheriting) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises).

¹¹ ἐκκλινάτω (Let him turn away) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) ποιησάτω (let him do) ἀγαθόν (good). ζητησάτω (Let him seek) εἰρήνην (peace) καὶ (and) διωξάτω (let him pursue) αὐτήν (it).

¹³ Καὶ (And) τίς (who is) ὁ (he who) κακώσων (will harm) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) τοῦ (for that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good), ζηλωταὶ (zealous) γένησθε (you should be)?

²⁹ Ἐὰν (If) εἰδῆτε (you know) ὅτι (that) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (He is), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (Him) γεγέννηται (has been begotten).

⁶ πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένων (abiding), οὐχ (not) ἁμαρτάνει (sins); πᾶς (anyone) ὁ (-) ἁμαρτάνων (sinning), οὐχ (not) ἑώρακεν (has seen) αὐτὸν (Him), οὐδὲ (nor) ἔγνωκεν (has he known) αὐτόν (Him). ⁷ Τεκνία (Little children), μηδεὶς (no one) πλανάτω (let lead astray) ὑμᾶς (you); ὁ (the one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is). ⁸ ὁ (The one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil) ἐστίν (is), ὅτι (because) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) ἁμαρτάνει (has been sinning). εἰς (For) τοῦτο (this reason) ἐφανερώθη (was revealed) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) λύσῃ (He might destroy) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil). ⁹ Πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐ (not) ποιεῖ (practices), ὅτι (because) σπέρμα (seed) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἁμαρτάνειν (to continue sinning), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (he has been born).

³⁵ καὶ (And) ὁ (the one) ἑωρακὼς (having seen) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has borne witness), καὶ (and) ἀληθινὴ (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony). καὶ (And) ἐκεῖνος (He) οἶδεν (knows) ὅτι (that) ἀληθῆ (truth) λέγει (he is speaking), ἵνα (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) πιστεύητε (might believe).

²⁴ Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μαθητὴς (disciple) ὁ (-) μαρτυρῶν (bearing witness) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) γράψας (having written) ταῦτα (these things), καὶ (and) οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀληθὴς (true) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) ἐστίν (is).

²² Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Κορνήλιος (Cornelius) ἑκατοντάρχης (a centurion), ἀνὴρ (a man) δίκαιος (righteous) καὶ (and) φοβούμενος (fearing) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), μαρτυρούμενός (being well testified to) τε (then) ὑπὸ (by) ὅλου (all) τοῦ (the) ἔθνους (nation) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), ἐχρηματίσθη (was divinely instructed) ὑπὸ (by) ἀγγέλου (an angel) ἁγίου (holy) μεταπέμψασθαί (to send for) σε (you) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) ῥήματα (a message) παρὰ (from) σοῦ (you).”

⁷ δεῖ (It behooves him) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) μαρτυρίαν (a testimony) καλὴν (good) ἔχειν (to have) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (those) ἔξωθεν (outside), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (into) ὀνειδισμὸν (reproach) ἐμπέσῃ (he might fall), καὶ (and) παγίδα (the snare) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil).

Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) Περσίδα (Persis), τὴν (the) ἀγαπητήν (beloved), ἥτις (who) πολλὰ (much) ἐκοπίασεν (toiled) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord). ¹³ Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) Ῥοῦφον (Rufus), τὸν (the) ἐκλεκτὸν (chosen) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἐμοῦ (of me). ¹⁴ Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) Ἀσύνκριτον (Asyncritus), Φλέγοντα (Phlegon), Ἑρμῆν (Hermes), Πατρόβαν (Patrobas), Ἑρμᾶν (Hermas), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them) ἀδελφούς (brothers). ¹⁵ Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) Φιλόλογον (Philologus) καὶ (and) Ἰουλίαν (Julia), Νηρέα (Nereus) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀδελφὴν (sister) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) Ὀλυμπᾶν (Olympas) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them) πάντας (all) ἁγίους (saints). ¹⁶ Ἀσπάσασθε (Greet) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἐν (with) φιλήματι (a kiss) ἁγίῳ (holy). Ἀσπάζονται (Greet) ὑμᾶς (you), αἱ (the) ἐκκλησίαι (churches) πᾶσαι (all) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹⁶ Λέγω (I say) δέ (now), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) περιπατεῖτε (walk), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίαν (the desire) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (you should gratify).

³ τούτῳ (To him) ὁ (the) θυρωρὸς (doorkeeper) ἀνοίγει (opens), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀκούει (hear), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἴδια (own) πρόβατα (sheep) φωνεῖ (he calls) κατ’ (by) ὄνομα (name) καὶ (and) ἐξάγει (leads out) αὐτά (them).
