LXX_WH⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς τωβιας εἶπεν αὐτῷ πάτερ ποιήσω πάντα ὅσα ἐντέταλσαί μοι ² ἀλλὰ πῶς δυνήσομαι λαβεῖν τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ οὐ γινώσκω αὐτόν ³ καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ τὸ χειρόγραφον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ζήτησον σεαυτῷ ἄνθρωπον ὃς συμπορεύσεταί σοι καὶ δώσω αὐτῷ μισθόν ἕως ζῶ καὶ λαβὲ πορευθεὶς τὸ ἀργύριον ⁴ καὶ ἐπορεύθη ζητῆσαι ἄνθρωπον καὶ εὗρεν τὸν ραφαηλ ὃς ἦν ἄγγελος καὶ οὐκ ᾔδει ⁵ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ εἰ δύναμαι πορευθῆναι μετὰ σοῦ ἐν ῥάγοις τῆς μηδίας καὶ εἰ ἔμπειρος εἶ τῶν τόπων ⁶ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος πορεύσομαι μετὰ σοῦ καὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἐμπειρῶ καὶ παρὰ γαβαηλ τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν ηὐλίσθην ⁷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τωβιας ὑπόμεινόν με καὶ ἐρῶ τῷ πατρί μου ⁸ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πορεύου καὶ μὴ χρονίσῃς ⁹ καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἶπεν τῷ πατρί ἰδοὺ εὕρηκα ὃς συμπορεύσεταί μοι ὁ δὲ εἶπεν φώνησον αὐτὸν πρός με ἵνα ἐπιγνῶ ποίας φυλῆς ἐστιν καὶ εἰ πιστὸς τοῦ πορευθῆναι μετὰ σοῦ ¹⁰ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτόν καὶ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ ἠσπάσαντο ἀλλήλους ¹¹ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τωβιτ ἄδελφε ἐκ ποίας φυλῆς καὶ ἐκ ποίας πατρίδος σὺ εἶ ὑπόδειξόν μοι ¹² καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ φυλὴν καὶ πατριὰν σὺ ζητεῖς ἢ μίσθιον ὃς συμπορεύσεται μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ σου καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τωβιτ βούλομαι ἄδελφε ἐπιγνῶναι τὸ γένος σου καὶ τὸ ὄνομα ¹³ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἐγὼ αζαριας ανανιου τοῦ μεγάλου τῶν ἀδελφῶν σου ¹⁴ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὑγιαίνων ἔλθοις ἄδελφε καὶ μή μοι ὀργισθῇς ὅτι ἐζήτησα τὴν φυλήν σου καὶ τὴν πατριάν σου ἐπιγνῶναι καὶ σὺ τυγχάνεις ἀδελφός μου ἐκ τῆς καλῆς καὶ ἀγαθῆς γενεᾶς ἐπεγίνωσκον γὰρ ἐγὼ ανανιαν καὶ ιαθαν τοὺς υἱοὺς σεμειου τοῦ μεγάλου ὡς ἐπορευόμεθα κοινῶς εἰς ιεροσόλυμα προσκυνεῖν ἀναφέροντες τὰ πρωτότοκα καὶ τὰς δεκάτας τῶν γενημάτων καὶ οὐκ ἐπλανήθησαν ἐν τῇ πλάνῃ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἡμῶν ἐκ ῥίζης καλῆς εἶ ἄδελφε ¹⁵ ἀλλ' εἰπόν μοι τίνα σοι ἔσομαι μισθὸν διδόναι δραχμὴν τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὰ δέοντά σοι ὡς καὶ τῷ υἱῷ μου ¹⁶ καὶ ἔτι προσθήσω σοι ἐπὶ τὸν μισθόν ἐὰν ὑγιαίνοντες ἐπιστρέψητε ¹⁷ καὶ εὐδόκησαν οὕτως καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τωβιαν ἕτοιμος γίνου πρὸς τὴν ὁδόν καὶ εὐοδωθείητε καὶ ἡτοίμασεν ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ τὰ πρὸς τὴν ὁδόν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ πορεύου μετὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ὁ δὲ ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ οἰκῶν θεὸς εὐοδώσει τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτοῦ συμπορευθήτω ὑμῖν καὶ ἐξῆλθαν ἀμφότεροι ἀπελθεῖν καὶ ὁ κύων τοῦ παιδαρίου μετ' αὐτῶν ¹⁸ ἔκλαυσεν δὲ αννα ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τωβιτ τί ἐξαπέστειλας τὸ παιδίον ἡμῶν ἢ οὐχὶ ἡ ῥάβδος τῆς χειρὸς ἡμῶν ἐστιν ἐν τῷ εἰσπορεύεσθαι αὐτὸν καὶ ἐκπορεύεσθαι ἐνώπιον ἡμῶν ¹⁹ ἀργύριον τῷ ἀργυρίῳ μὴ φθάσαι ἀλλὰ περίψημα τοῦ παιδίου ἡμῶν γένοιτο ²⁰ ὡς γὰρ δέδοται ἡμῖν ζῆν παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου τοῦτο ἱκανὸν ἡμῖν ὑπάρχει ²¹ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ τωβιτ μὴ λόγον ἔχε ἀδελφή ὑγιαίνων ἐλεύσεται καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὄψονται αὐτόν ²² ἄγγελος γὰρ ἀγαθὸς συμπορεύσεται αὐτῷ καὶ εὐοδωθήσεται ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ὑποστρέψει ὑγιαίνων ²³ καὶ ἐπαύσατο κλαίουσα

Et Tobias dixit ei: Nosti viam quæ ducit in regionem Medorum? ⁸ Cui respondit: Novi: et omnia itinera ejus frequenter ambulavi, et mansi apud Gabelum fratrem nostrum, qui moratur in Rages civitate Medorum, quæ posita est in monte Ecbatanis. ⁹ Cui Tobias ait: Sustine me obsecro, donec hæc ipsa nuntiem patri meo. ¹⁰ Tunc ingressus Tobias, indicavit universa hæc patri suo. Super quæ admiratus pater, rogavit ut introiret ad eum. ¹¹ Ingressus itaque salutavit eum, et dixit: Gaudium tibi sit semper. ¹² Et ait Tobias: Quale gaudium mihi erit, qui in tenebris sedeo, et lumen cæli non video? ¹³ Cui ait juvenis: Forti animo esto: in proximo est ut a Deo cureris. ¹⁴ Dixit itaque illi Tobias: Numquid poteris perducere filium meum ad Gabelum in Rages civitatem Medorum? et cum redieris, restituam tibi mercedem tuam. ¹⁵ Et dixit ei angelus: Ego ducam, et reducam eum ad te. ¹⁶ Cui Tobias respondit: Rogo te, indica mihi de qua domo aut de qua tribu es tu. ¹⁷ Cui Raphaël angelus dixit: Genus quæris mercenarii, an ipsum mercenarium qui cum filio tuo eat? ¹⁸ sed ne forte sollicitum te reddam, ego sum Azarias Ananiæ magni filius. ¹⁹ Et Tobias respondit: Ex magno genere es tu. Sed peto ne irascaris quod voluerim cognoscere genus tuum. ²⁰ Dixit autem illi angelus: Ego sanum ducam, et sanum tibi reducam filium tuum. ²¹ Respondens autem Tobias, ait: Bene ambuletis, et sit Deus in itinere vestro, et angelus ejus comitetur vobiscum. ²² Tunc paratis omnibus quæ erant in via portanda, fecit Tobias vale patri suo et matri suæ, et ambulaverunt ambo simul. ²³ Cumque profecti essent, cœpit mater ejus flere, et dicere: Baculum senectutis nostræ tulisti, et transmisisti a nobis. ²⁴ Numquam fuisset ipsa pecunia, pro qua misisti eum: ²⁵ sufficiebat enim nobis paupertas nostra, ut divitias computaremus hoc, quod videbamus filium nostrum. ²⁶ Dixitque ei Tobias: Noli flere: salvus perveniet filius noster, et salvus revertetur ad nos, et oculi tui videbunt illum. ²⁷ Credo enim quod angelus Dei bonus comitetur ei, et bene disponat omnia quæ circa eum geruntur, ita ut cum gaudio revertatur ad nos. ²⁸ Ad hanc vocem cessavit mater ejus flere, et tacuit.

And Tobie seide to hym, Knowist thou the weie, that ledith in to the cuntrei of Medeis? ⁸ To whom he answeride, Y knowe, and Y haue go ofte alle the weies therof, and Y haue dwellid at Gabelus, youre brother, that dwellith in Rages, a citee of Medeis, which is set in `the hil of Echbathanis. ⁹ To whom Tobie seide, Y biseche, abide thou me, til Y telle these thingis to my fader. ¹⁰ Thanne Tobie entride, and telde alle these thingis to his fader; on which thingis the fader wondride, and preiede, that he wolde entre to him. ¹¹ Therfor he entride, and grette Tobie, and seide, Ioie be euere to thee! ¹² And Tobie seide, What maner ioie schal be to me, that sitte in derknessis, and se not `the liyt of heuene? ¹³ To whom the yong oon seide, Be thou of strong wit; it is in the nexte that thou be heelid of God. ¹⁴ Therfor Tobie seide to hym, Whether thou maist lede my sone to Gabelus in to Rages, the citee of Medeis, and whanne thou comest ayen, Y schal restore thi mede to thee? ¹⁵ And the aungel seide to hym, Y schal lede, and bringe ayen him hool to thee. ¹⁶ To whom Tobie answeride, Y preie thee, schewe to me, of what hows, ether of what lynage thou art? ¹⁷ To whom Raphael, the aungel, seide, Axist thou the kyn of the hirid man, ethir the hirid man hym silf, that schal go with thi sone? ¹⁸ But lest perauenture Y make thee douteful, Y am Azarie, the sone of grete Ananye. ¹⁹ And Tobie answeride, Thou art of greet kyn; but Y axe, that thou be not wrooth, that Y wolde knowe thi kyn. ²⁰ Forsothe the aungel seide to hym, Y schal lede thi sone hool, and Y schal bring ayen to thee `thi sone hool. ²¹ Sotheli Tobie answeride, and seide, Wel `go ye, and the Lord be in youre weie, and his aungel go with you. ²² Thanne whanne alle thingis weren redi, that schulden be borun in the weie, Tobie made `farewel to his fadir and his modir; and `bothe yeden togidere. ²³ And whanne thei weren goon forth, his modir bigan to wepe, and to seie, Thou hast take the staf of oure eelde, and hast sent awey fro vs; ²⁴ `Y wolde thilke monei were neuere, `for which thou sentist him; ²⁵ oure pouert sufficide to vs, that we schulden arette this richessis, that we sien oure sone. ²⁶ And Tobie seide to hir, `Nyle thou wepe; oure sone schal come saaf, and he schal turne ayen saaf to vs, and thin iyen schulen se hym. ²⁷ For Y bileue, that the good aungel of God goith with him, and he schal dispose wel alle thingis, that ben doon aboute hym, so that he turne ayen with ioie to vs. ²⁸ At this vois his moder ceesside to wepe, and was stille.

Geneva⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ Tobias then answered, and sayd, Father, I wil do all things which thou hast commanded me. ² But howe can I receiue the siluer, seeing I know him not? ³ Then he gaue him the hand writing, & sayd vnto him, Seeke thee a man, which may goe with thee, whiles I yet liue, and I will giue him wages, & go and receiue the money. ⁴ Therfore when he was gone to seeke a man, he found Raphael the Angel. ⁵ But he knewe not, and sayd vnto him, May I goe with thee into the land of Media? and knowest thou those places well? ⁶ To whom the Angel said, I wil go with thee: for I haue remained with our brother Gabael. ⁷ Then Tobias sayd to him, Tarie for me, till I tell my father. ⁸ Then he sayde vnto him, Goe, and tarie not: so he went in and sayde to his father, Beholde, I haue founde one, which will goe with me. Then he sayde, Call him vnto me, that I may knowe of what tribe he is, and whether he be faithfull to goe with thee. ⁹ So he called him, and he came in, and they saluted one another. ¹⁰ Then Tobit sayde vnto him, Brother, shewe me of what tribe and familie thou art. ¹¹ To whom he said, Doest thou seeke a stocke or familie, or an hired man to goe with thy sonne? Then Tobit sayd vnto him, I would know, brother, thy kindred and thy name. ¹² Then he sayd, I am of the kinred of Azarias and Ananias the great, and of thy brethren. ¹³ Then Tobit sayde, Thou art welcome, brother: be not now angry with me, because I haue enquired to knowe thy kinred, & thy familie: for thou art my brother of an honest & good stocke: for I know Ananias & Ionathas, sonnes of that great Samaias: for we went together to Ierusalem to worship, & offred the first borne, & the tenthes of the fruites, & they were not deceiued with the error of our brethren my brother, thou art of a great stocke. ¹⁴ But tel me, What wages shal I giue thee? wilt thou a groate a day and things necessarie, as to mine owne sonne? ¹⁵ Yea, moreouer if ye returne safe, I will adde some thing to the wages. ¹⁶ So they agreed. Then said he to Tobias, Prepare thy selfe for the iourney, and goe you on Gods Name; when his sonne had prepared all things for the iourney, his father sayde, Goe thou with this man, and God which dwelleth in heauen, prosper your iourney, & the Angel of God keepe you companie. So they went forth both and departed, & the dogge of the yong man with them. ¹⁷ But Anna his mother wept, & sayd to Tobit, Why hast thou sent away our sonne? is he not the staffe of our hand to minister vnto vs? ¹⁸ Woulde to God wee had not layde money vpon money, but that it had bene cast away in respect of our sonne. ¹⁹ For that which God hath giuen vs to liue with, doeth suffice vs. ²⁰ Then said Tobit, Be not carefull, my sister: he shal returne in safetie, and thine eyes shal see him. ²¹ For the good Angel doeth keepe him company, and his iourney shalbe prosperous, and he shal returne safe. ²² Then she made an ende of weeping.

Bishops⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ Then aunswered Tobias his father, and said: Father, all that thou hast commaunded me wyl I doe, and that diligently. ² Then his father aunswered him, and saide, I haue his hand writing by me: which when thou shewest him, immediatly he shall pay thee. ² But how I shall require this money I can not tell, neither doth he knowe me, nor I him: What token shall I geue him? And as for the way thyther, I neuer knew it. ³ But go thy way nowe and get thee some faithful man to go with thee for an hyre, that thou mayst receaue the money while I am yet liuing. ⁴ Then went Tobias out, and vpon the streate he founde a fayre young man standing, girded vp, and as it were one redie to take his iourney. ⁵ And he knewe not that it was an angell of God, but saluted him, and sayde: From whence art thou, thou good young man? ⁶ He aunswered: Of the children of Israel. And Tobias said vnto him: Knowest thou the way that leadeth vnto the countrey of the Medes? ⁷ He aunswered: I knowe it well, & all those streates haue I gone oft times, and haue lodged with our brother Gabelus that dwelleth in Rages a citie of the Medes, which lyeth vpon the mout Ecbatanis. ⁸ Tobias saide vnto him: I pray thee tary for me, till I haue tolde my father these thinges. ⁹ Then went Tobias in, and tolde his father all: At the which his father marueyled, and prayed that he woulde come in vnto him. ¹⁰ Now when he came in, he saluted him, and saide: Ioy be with thee for euermore. ¹¹ And olde Tobias saide: what ioy can I haue that sit here in darkenesse, and see not the light of heauen? ¹² The young man saide vnto him: Be of good cheare, God shall helpe thee shortly. ¹³ And Tobias saide vnto him: Canst thou bring my sonne to Gabelus, vnto the citie of Rages in Medea: and when thou commest againe, I shall pay thee thy hyre? ¹⁴ And the angell saide vnto him: I shall leade thy sonne, and bring him to thee againe. ¹⁵ Then Tobias aunswered him: Tell me I pray thee, of what house or of what tribe art thou? ¹⁶ The angel Raphael saide vnto him: Seekest thou after the kinred of an hireling, or an hired man him selfe for thy sonne to go with him? ¹⁷ But that I make thee not carefull, I am Azarias the sonne of great Hananias. ¹⁸ And Tobias aunswered, Thou art come of a great kinred: but I pray thee be not displeased that I desire to know thy kinred. ¹⁹ The angell said vnto him: Thy sonne shall I leade foorth safely, and bryng him whole sounde to thee againe. ²⁰ Then aunswered Tobias, and saide: well, go on your way, and God be in your iourney, and his angell beare you company. ²¹ So when they had prepared all thinges that they woulde take with them in their iourney, Tobias bade his father and his mother farewell: and they went on their way both together. ²² Nowe when they were gone, his mother began to weepe, & saide: The staffe of our age hast thou taken away, and sent him from vs. ²³ Woulde God that money had neuer ben, for the which thou hast sent him away. ²⁴ For our pouertie was sufficient for vs, why we shoulde haue counted it rychesse, that we saw our sonne here. ²⁵ Then saide Tobias vnto her: Weepe not, our sonne shall go safely and come to vs againe sounde, and thyne eyes shall see him. ²⁷ For I trust that the good angell of God shall beare him company, and order well all the thinges that he doth, so that he shall come to vs againe with ioy. ²⁸ At these wordes his mother left of from weeping, and held her peace.

And Tobias said to him: Knowest thou the way that leadeth to the country of the Medes? ⁸ And he answered: I know it: and I have often walked through all the ways thereof, and I have abode with Gabelus our brother, who dwelleth at Rages a city of the Medes, which is situate in the mount of Ecbatana. ⁹ And Tobias said to him: Stay for me, I beseech thee, till I tell these same things to my father. ¹⁰ Then Tobias going in told all these things to his father. Upon which his father being in admiration, desired that he would come in unto him. ¹¹ So going in he saluted him, and said: Joy be to thee always. ¹² And Tobias said: What manner of joy shall be to me, who sit in darkness, and see not the light of heaven? ¹³ And the young man said to him: Be of good courage, thy cure from God is at hand. ¹⁴ And Tobias said to him: Canst thou conduct my son to Gabelus at Rages, a city of the Medes? and when thou shalt return, I will pay thee thy hire. ¹⁵ And the angel said to him: I will conduct him thither, and bring him back to thee. ¹⁶ And Tobias said to him: I pray thee, tell me, of what family, or what tribe art thou? ¹⁷ And Raphael the angel answered: Dost thou seek the family of him thou hirest, or the hired servant himself to go with thy son? ¹⁸ But lest I should make thee uneasy, I am Azarias the son of the great Ananias. ¹⁹ And Tobias answered: Thou art of a great family. But I pray thee be not angry that I desired to know thy family. ²⁰ And the angel said to him: I will lead thy son safe, and bring him to thee again safe. ²¹ And Tobias answering, said: May you have a good journey, and God be with you in your way, and his angel accompany you. ²² Then all things being ready, that were to be carried in their journey, Tobias bade his father and his mother farewell, and they set out both together. ²³ And when they were departed, his mother began to weep, and to say: Thou hast taken the staff of our old age, and sent him away from us. ²⁴ I wish the money for which thou hast sent him, had never been. ²⁵ For poverty was sufficient for us, that we might account it as riches, that we saw our son. ²⁶ And Tobias said to her: Weep not, our son will arrive thither safe, and will return safe to us, and thy eyes shall see him. ²⁷ For I believe that the good angel of God doth accompany him, and doth order all things well that are done about him, so that he shall return to us with joy. ²⁸ At these words his mother ceased weeping, and held her peace.

Then Tobit said unto him, I would know, brother, thy kindred and name. ¹² Then he said, I am Azarias, the son of Ananias the great, and of thy brethren. ¹³ Then Tobit said, Thou art welcome, brother; be not now angry with me, because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family; for thou art my brother, of an honest and good stock: for I know Ananias and Jonathas, sons of that great Samaias, as we went together to Jerusalem to worship, and offered the firstborn, and the tenths of the fruits; and they were not seduced with the error of our brethren: my brother, thou art of a good stock. ¹⁴ But tell me, what wages shall I give thee? wilt thou a drachm a day, and things necessary, as to mine own son? ¹⁵ Yea, moreover, if ye return safe, I will add something to thy wages. ¹⁶ So they were well pleased. Then said he to Tobias, Prepare thyself for the journey, and God send you a good journey. And when his son had prepared all things far the journey, his father said, Go thou with this man, and God, which dwelleth in heaven, prosper your journey, and the angel of God keep you company. So they went forth both, and the young man's dog with them. ¹⁷ But Anna his mother wept, and said to Tobit, Why hast thou sent away our son? is he not the staff of our hand, in going in and out before us? ¹⁸ Be not greedy to add money to money: but let it be as refuse in respect of our child. ¹⁹ For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us. ²⁰ Then said Tobit to her, Take no care, my sister; he shall return in safety, and thine eyes shall see him. ²¹ For the good angel will keep him company, and his journey shall be prosperous, and he shall return safe. ²² Then she made an end of weeping.

But he said, Call him unto me, that I may know of what tribe he is, and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee. ⁹ And he called him, and he came in, and they saluted one another. ¹⁰ And Tobit said unto him, Brother, of what tribe and of what family art thou? Shew me. ¹¹ And he said unto him, Seekest thou a tribe and a family, or a hired man which shall go with thy son? And he said to Tobias, Prepare thyself for the journey, and God prosper you. And his son prepared what was needful for the journey, and his father said unto him, Go thou with this man; but God, which dwelleth in heaven, shall prosper your journey; and may his angel go with you. And they both went forth to depart, and the young man’s dog with them. ¹⁷ But Anna his mother wept, and said to Tobit, Why hast thou sent away our child? is he not the staff of our hand, in going in and out before us? ¹⁸ Be not greedy to add money to money: but let it be as refuse in respect of our child. ¹⁹ For as the Lord hath given us to live, so doth it suffice us. ²⁰ And Tobit said to her, Take no care, my sister; he shall return safe and sound, and thine eyes shall see him. ²¹ For a good angel shall go with him, and his journey shall be prospered, and he shall return safe and sound. ²² And she made an end of weeping.
