Matthew 5:33-48

WPNT(i) 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You shall not swear falsely, but you shall perform your oaths to the Lord’. 34 But I say to you not to swear at all: neither by heaven, because it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, because it is a stool for His feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your word be ‘yes yes’, ‘no no’; for whatever is more than these is from the malignant one. [!!] 38 “You have heard that it was said: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you not to resist the evildoer; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have the cloak as well. 41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you. 43 “You have heard that it was said: ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy’. 44 But I say to you: love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, 45 that you may prove to be sons of your Father in the heavens; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and He sends rain on the just and the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your friends, what are you doing extra? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore, you be perfect just as your Father in the heavens is perfect.
