Again you have heard that it hath been said to the ancients, Thou shalt not forswear thyself; but shalt perform thine oaths to the Lord.
But I say to you, Swear not at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne:
nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great king,
neither shalt thou swear by thy head; for thou canst not make one hair white or black.
But let your word yes, be yes; and your no, no; for whatever exceedeth these, proceedeth from that which is evil.
You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye: and a tooth for a tooth."
But I say to you, Contend not with the injurious: but if one smite thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if any determine to sue thee at law for thy vest, give it up to him, nay were it even thy mantle.
And if one press thee to go one mile, go with him two.
Give to him who asketh thee. And from him who would borrow of thee, turn not thou away.
You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour and hate thine enemy."
But I say to you, Love your enemies. Bless them who curse you. Do good to them who hate you: and pray for them who spitefully use you and persecute you;
that you may be the children of your Father in heaven: for he causeth the sun to rise on bad and good, and sendeth the rain on just and unjust.
For if you love them who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans the same?
And if you salute your brethren only, wherein do ye excel? Do not even the publicans do the same?
You therefore are to be perfect, as your Father, who is in heaven, is perfect.
