1 Chronicles 11

VIN(i) 1 Then all Israel came together to David at Hebron, and said, Truly, we are your bone and your flesh. 2 "In time past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in." the LORD your God said to you: "You will shepherd my people Israel, and be ruler over my people Israel." 3 And all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel according to the word of the LORD through Samuel. 4 David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. 5 The inhabitants of Jebus told David, "You're not coming in here!" Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion, now known as the city of David. 6 David said: Whoever attacks the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and became chief. 7 And David dwelt in the castle, and therefore it was called the city of David, 8 He built the city around it, from the stronghold on the mound to the surrounding area. Joab repaired the rest of the city. 9 And David became greater and greater, for the LORD Almighty was with him. 10 These were the men in charge of David's mighty men. They strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel. 11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam a Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time. 12 After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men. 13 He was with David at Pasdammim. The Philistines were gathered for battle. There was a piece of ground full of barley. And the people fled from the Philistines. 14 so they took their stand in the midst of the plot and rescued it, and smote the Philistines,—and the LORD wrought a great victory. 15 And three of the thirty chiefs went down toward the rock to David at the cave of Adullam when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 16 And David was then in the stronghold; and the Philistines` garrison was then at Bethlehem. 17 David said with longing: "Oh, that someone would give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!" 18 So the Three broke through the Philistine ranks, drew some water from the Bethlehem well that was next to the city gate, and brought it back to David. But David refused to drink it, poured it out before the LORD, and 19 And he said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing! should I drink the blood of these men [who went] at the risk of their lives? for at the risk of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men. 20 Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of another three. He had lifted up his spear against three hundred men. He killed them and won a name among these three. 21 He was twice as renowned among the three and was their commander. But he did not attain to the three. 22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many great deeds; he slew two lion-like men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit on a snowy day. 23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, seven and a half feet tall. Egyptian had a spear like a weaver's beam in his hand. He went down to him with a staff, wrested the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and killed him with his own spear. 24 These [things] has Benaiah son of Jehoiada done, and has a name among the three mighty ones. 25 Look, he was more honorable than the thirty, but he did not attain to the three: and David set him over his guard. 26 And the mighty ones of power—Asahel brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Beth-lehem, 27 Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite, 28 Ikkesh's son Ira from Tekoa, Abiezer from Anathoth, 29 Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30 Maharai the Netophathite, Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite, 31 Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah, the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, 32 Hurai from the wadis of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, 33 Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, 34 the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan son of Shage the Hararite, 35 Ahiam son of Sacar the Hararite, Eliphal son of Ur, 36 Hepher the Mekerathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, 37 Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai son of Ezbai, 38 Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, 39 Zelek, the Ammonite,—Naharai, the Berothite, the armour-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah; 40 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai, 42 Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a chief of the Reubenites, and thirty with him, 43 Hanan, son of Maacah, and Joshaphat, the Mithnite; 44 Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, 45 Jediael son of Shimri, and Joha his brother the Tizite, 46 Eliel the Mahavite, Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the Moabite, 47 Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.
