Matthew 15:1-20

Thomson(i) 1 Then some Scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem accosted Jesus, saying, 2 Why do thy disciples transgress the doctrine of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. 3 In reply to which he said to them, Why do you transgress the commandment of God, from a regard to your doctrines? 4 For God commanded saying, "Honour thy father and thy mother, and whosoever revileth father or mother let him be put to death: 5 but you say, "Whoever shall say to his father or to his mother, Let that by which thou mightest be benefited by me, be dedicated, 6 must not honour either his father or his mother." Thus you have annulled the commandment of God from a regard to your doctrines. 7 Hypocrites! well did Esaias prophesy concerning you, saying, 8 This people draw near to me with their mouth; and with their lips they honour me, but their heart is far from me; 9 and, in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines, the commands of men. 10 Then having called the multitude to him, he said to them, Hear and understand; 11 It is not that which goeth into the mouth which defileth the man; but it is that which cometh out of the mouth, which defileth the man. 12 Then his disciples coming to him said, Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard that saying, were offended? 13 In reply to which he said, Every plant which my heavenly father hath not planted, is to be rooted up. 14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of blind. Now if the blind lead the blind, they will both fall into a ditch. 15 Then Peter addressing him said, Explain to us this parable. 16 Whereupon Jesus said, Are you also yet without understanding? 17 Do you not yet perceive, that whatever entereth in at the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is thrown out into the sink? 18 And that what proceed from the mouth come from the heart, and that these defile the man? 19 For out of the heart come malicious surmises, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, calumnies. 20 These are the things which defile the man: but to eat with unwashen hands doth not defile the man.
