40 Hereupon many of the people, when they heard this saying, said, This is certainly the prophet,
41 Others said, This is the Christ. But others said', Doth the Christ come out of Galilee?
42 Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the town whence David was?
43 So there was a division among the people on his account.
44 And some of them had a mind to seize him, but no one laid hands on him.
45 The officers therefore went to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not brought him?
46 The officers replied, Never did a man speak like this man.
47 Thereupon the Pharisees answered them, Are you also seduced?
48 Hath any of the chief priests believed in him, or any of the Pharisees?
49 But this multitude, which know not the law, are accursed.
50 Nicodemus, he who came to Jesus by night, and who was one of them, said to them,
51 Doth our law condemn the man without hearing him, and knowing what he hath done?
52 In reply to which, they said to him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and see that a prophet of Galilee hath not been raised up.
