This happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who has become before me, for he was before me.'
I did not know him, but I knew that he was to be shown to Israel. For that reason I came baptizing with water."
John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and it remained on him.
I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water — he said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, that is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
And I saw it and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."
Again on the next day John was standing with two of his disciples,
and, looking at Jesus as he walked, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
The two disciples heard him say this and they followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and looked at them as they followed, and said to them, "What do you wish?" They said to him, "Rabbi (which means, when translated, Teacher), where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come and see." So they came and saw where he was staying, and stayed with him that day. It was then about four in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two that heard about Jesus from John and followed him.
He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah (which means, when translated, the Christ)!"
He led him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, "You are Simon, the son of John. You shall be called Cephas" (which is in Greek, Peter, that is, Rock).
On the next day Jesus decided to go away to Galilee, and he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him of whom Moses wrote in the Law and of whom the prophets wrote — Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth."
Nathanael said to him, "From Nazareth can there be anything good?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said, "See, here is a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit."
Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!"
Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you underneath the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than this."
He added, "Truly, truly, I tell you you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."
