Ezra 5 Then the prophets , Haggai the prophet , and Zechariah the son of Iddo , prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel , even unto them.

2 H116 Then H6966 rose up [H8754] H2217 Zerubbabel H1247 the son H7598 of Shealtiel H3443 , and Jeshua H1247 the son H3136 of Jozadak H8271 , and began [H8745] H1124 to build [H8749] H1005 the house H426 of God H3390 which is at Jerusalem H5974 : and with them H5029 were the prophets H426 of God H5583 helping [H8683] them.

3 H2166 At the same time H858 came [H8754] [H8674] to them Tatnai H6347 , governor H5675 on this side H5103 the river H8370 , and Shetharboznai H3675 , and their companions H560 , and said [H8750] H3652 thus H5922 unto them H4479 , Who H7761 hath commanded [H8754] H2942 H1124 you to build [H8749] H1836 this H1005 house H3635 , and to make up [H8805] H1836 this H846 wall?

4 H116 Then H560 said [H8754] H3660 we unto them after this manner H4479 , What H581 are H8036 the names H1400 of the men H1124 that make [H8750] H1836 this H1147 building?

5 H5870 But the eye H426 of their God H1934 was [H8754] H5922 upon H7868 the elders [H8750] H3062 of the Jews H3809 , that they could not H989 cause H1994 them H989 to cease [H8754] H5705 , till H2941 the matter H1946 came [H8748] H1868 to Darius H116 : and then H8421 they returned answer [H8681] H5407 by letter H5922 concerning H1836 this matter .

7 H7972 They sent [H8754] H6600 a letter H5922 unto H1459 him, wherein H3790 was written [H8752] H1836 thus H1868 ; Unto Darius H4430 the king H3606 , all H8001 peace.

8 H1934 Be it known [H8748] H3046 [H8752] H4430 unto the king H236 , that we went [H8754] H4083 into the province H3061 of Judea H1005 , to the house H7229 of the great H426 God H1124 , which is builded [H8732] H1560 with great H69 stones H636 , and timber H7761 is laid [H8727] H3797 in the walls H1791 , and this H5673 work H5648 goeth [H8727] H629 fast H6744 on, and prospereth [H8683] H3028 in their hands.

12 H3861 But H4481 after H2 that our fathers H7265 had provoked H426 the God H8065 of heaven H7265 unto wrath [H8684] H3052 , he gave [H8754] H1994 them H3028 into the hand H5020 of Nebuchadnezzar H4430 the king H895 of Babylon H3679 , the Chaldean H5642 , who destroyed [H8754] H1836 this H1005 house H1541 , and carried H5972 the people H1541 away [H8684] H895 into Babylon.

13 H1297 But H2298 in the first H8140 year H3567 of Cyrus H4430 the king H895 of Babylon H4430 the same king H3567 Cyrus H7761 made [H8754] H2942 a decree H1124 to build [H8749] H1836 this H1005 house H426 of God.

14 H3984 And the vessels H638 also H1768 of H1722 gold H3702 and silver H1005 of the house H426 of God H5020 , which Nebuchadnezzar H5312 took [H8684] H4481 out of H1965 the temple H3390 that was in Jerusalem H2987 , and brought [H8684] H1965 them into the temple H895 of Babylon H1994 , those H3567 did Cyrus H4430 the king H5312 take [H8684] H4481 out of H1965 the temple H895 of Babylon H3052 , and they were delivered [H8753] H8036 unto one, whose name H8340 was Sheshbazzar H7761 , whom he had made [H8754] H6347 governor;

15 H560 And said [H8754] H5376 unto him, Take [H8747] H412 these H3984 vessels H236 , go [H8747] H5182 , carry [H8680] H1994 them H1965 into the temple H3390 that is in Jerusalem H1005 , and let the house H426 of God H1124 be builded [H8731] H5922 in H870 his place.

16 H116 Then H858 came [H8754] H1791 the same H8340 Sheshbazzar H3052 , and laid [H8754] H787 the foundation H1005 of the house H426 of God H3390 which is in Jerusalem H4481 : and since H116 that time H5705 even until H3705 now H1124 hath it been in building [H8732] H3809 , and yet it is not H8000 finished [H8752] .

17 H3705 Now H2006 therefore, if H2869 it seem good H5922 to H4430 the king H1240 , let there be search [H8721] H4430 made in the king's H1596 treasure H1005 house H8536 , which is there H895 at Babylon H2006 , whether H383 it be H2942 so, that a decree H7761 was made [H8752] H4481 of H3567 Cyrus H4430 the king H1124 to build [H8749] H1791 this H1005 house H426 of God H3390 at Jerusalem H4430 , and let the king H7972 send [H8748] H7470 his pleasure H5922 to us concerning H1836 this matter.

ERV⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem; in the name of the God of Israel [prophesied they] unto them. ² Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them. ³ At the same time came to them Tattenai, the governor beyond the river, and Shethar-bonzenai, and their companions, and said thus to them, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? ⁴ Then spake we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building? ⁵ But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, and they did not make them cease, till the matter should come to Darius, and then answer should be returned by letter concerning it. ⁶ The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the river, and Shethar-bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were beyond the river, sent unto Darius the king: ⁷ they sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace. ⁸ Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth on with diligence and prospereth in their hands. ⁹ Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall? ¹⁰ We asked them their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were at the head of them. ¹¹ And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and finished. ¹² But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. ¹³ But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God. ¹⁴ And the gold and sliver vessels also of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; ¹⁵ and he said unto him, Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in its place. ¹⁶ Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundations of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not completed. ¹⁷ Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
