3 And so they thrust [their] hands on them and they were placed into custody (in ward) overnight, since it was already evening.
4 However, many of the folks presently hearing the word (message) trusted and believed, and so the number of the adult men came to be about five thousand.
5 Now it happened on the next day [that] their rulers and the elders, along with the Torah scholars (scribes; theologians; doctors of the Law) were to be gathered together in Jerusalem.
6 And Annas, the chief (or: ranking) priest, as well as Caiaphas, John, Alexander and as many folks who were of the chief priest's family (kinsfolk) [were also present].
7 So then, standing [Peter and John] in their midst [note: the Sanhedrin sat in a semicircle], they began by inquiry to investigate and ascertain: "Within, or in union with, what sort of power or ability – or in what kind of name (= in whose authority or invoking whose power) – did you people do this?"
