I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast which carries her, having the seven heads and ten horns. ⁸ The beast which you saw was, and is not; and is about to come up out of the abyss, and go into perdition: and those dwelling upon the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will be astonished, seeing the beast, because he was, and is not, and will be. ⁹ Here is a mind having wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, where the woman sits upon them, ¹⁰ and there are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, and another is not yet come; and when he may come it behooves him to remain a little while. ¹¹ The beast which was, and is not, and the same is the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going into perdition. ¹² And the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who live not yet received a kingdom; but they receive authority as kings one hour with the beast.
