¹ And as He went into the house of one of the chief of the pharisees to eat on the sabbath-day, and they were watching Him,

² and they watched Him, whether He would heal him on the sabbath-day, that they might accuse Him.

⁷ And the scribes and pharisees watched Him to see if He would work a cure on the sabbath: that they might find an accusation against Him.

³⁴ the Son of man is come eating and drinking like other men, and ye call Him a gluttonous man and a wine bibber, and a friend of publicans and sinners. ³⁵ But wisdom is justified by all her children. ³⁶ And one of the pharisees asked Him to eat with him: and He went into the pharisee's house, and sat down.

³⁷ And as He spake, a certain pharisee asked Him to dine with him: and He went in and sat down at table.

⁵³ As He was saying these things unto them the scribes and pharisees began vehemently to attack Him, and urge Him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying snares for Him, and endeavouring to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse Him.

²⁰ And they watched Him and sent out spies, pretending to be righteous men, to lay hold of his words, that they might deliver Him up to the power and authority of the governor.

¹ Now there was a man of the pharisees, whose name was Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews:

³⁴ But a certain pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, held in much esteem by all the people, stood up in the council, and ordered the apostles to be taken out a little while; and then he said unto them,

¹⁹ For though I am free from all, yet I have made myself a servant to all, that I might gain the more. ²⁰ And to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; that is, to those, who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law: ²¹ and to those without the law as without the law, (not being without law to God, but under the law to Christ) that I might gain those who are without the law. ²² To the weak I became as the weak, that I might gain the weak: I became all things to all men, that I might by every means save some.
