¹ Let us therefore fear least a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of us should seem to fall short of it:

²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doth the will of my Father, who is in heaven: ²² many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name, and in thy name have cast out devils, and in thy name have wrought many miracles? and I will then declare unto them, ²³ I never owned you, depart from me, ye workers of iniquity.

²⁶ And whoever heareth these words of mine, and performeth them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ and the rain fell upon it, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell, and the fall thereof was great.

⁴⁸ But if that servant be wicked and say in his heart, my master delayeth his coming,

⁴⁵ But if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and begin to beat the men and maid-servants, and drink, and to be drunken: ⁴⁶ the lord of that servant will come on a day in which he does not expect him, and at a time which he is not aware of; and will cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the unfaithful.

²⁵ When the master of the house shall have risen up and shut the door, and ye begin to stand without and knock at the door saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and He shall answer and say to you, I know you not, whence ye are: ²⁶ then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drank in thy presence, ²⁷ and thou hast taught in our streets, But He will say, I tell you, I know you not, whence ye are; depart from me all ye workers of iniquity: ²⁸ and there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves shut out. ²⁹ Yea they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. ³⁰ And behold, there are some last who shall be first, and there are first that shall be last.

³ For what if some did not believe? shall their incredulity make the faithfulness of God of no effect? ⁴ God forbid: yea, let God be acknowledged true, though every man be a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, and mightest overcome, when thou judgest.

²³ for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God;

²⁰ Well; they were broken off for their infidelity, and thou standest by faith: therefore be not high-minded but fear.

²⁶ I therefore so run, not as unobserved: I so fight, not as one that beateth the air: ²⁷ but I mortify my body and bring it into subjection, least after having preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

¹² Wherefore let him, that thinks he standeth, take heed least he fall.

¹³ If we are unfaithful, He continueth faithful notwithstanding; He cannot renounce Himself.

¹ For this reason we ought the more earnestly to attend to what we have heard, least by any means we should be found deficient. ² For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received it's just recompence; ³ how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which began to be declared by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by them that heard Him;

¹¹ so I sware in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest."

³ For we who believe shall enter into rest, as He said above, "So I sware in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest:" though the works of creation were finished from the foundation of the world: ⁴ for it is thus said concerning the seventh day, "And God rested the seventh day from all his works." ⁵ And yet in this place, "They shall not enter into my rest."

⁹ There remaineth therefore a rest for the people of God:

¹¹ Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, least any one fall after the same example of unbelief.

¹⁵ looking to it, least there be any one falling short of the grace of God, least any root of bitterness springing up should be troublesome, and by it many be defiled:

²⁵ See that ye reject not Him that speaketh; for if they escaped not, who rejected him that gave forth divine oracles on earth, much less shall we, if we turn away from Him that speaketh from heaven:

⁷ Remember your guides, who spake the word of God to you; whose faith imitate, considering the happy end of their conversation.
