¹ The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. ² Beloved, I earnestly pray, that thou mayst prosper and be in health, as thy soul prospereth. ³ For I greatly rejoiced, when the brethren came, and bore testimony to thy truth, even as thou walkest in truth. ⁴ And I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in the truth. ⁵ Beloved, thou actest faithfully in whatsoever service thou dost to the brethren, and to strangers too; ⁶ who have borne witness to thy love before the church: whom thou wilt do well in forwarding, as is worthy of God. ⁷ For they went forth for his name's sake, taking nothing of the gentiles. ⁸ We ought therefore to receive such, that we may become fellow-laborers in the truth. ⁹ I wrote to the church: but Diotrephes, who affects the pre-eminence among them, doth not receive us. ¹⁰ Therefore when I come, I will remember his deeds, prating against us with wicked words: and not content with these, he neither receiveth the brethren himself, nor suffers those that would; and casteth them out of the church. ¹¹ Beloved, do not thou follow that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doth good is of God: but he, that doth evil, hath not seen God. ¹² A good testimony is borne to Demetrius by all men, and by the truth itself: yea, and we also bear him like witness, and ye know that our testimony is true. ¹³ I had many things to write: but I would not write to thee with pen and ink; ¹⁴ for I hope to see thee soon, and we shall speak mouth to mouth. ⁽¹⁵⁾ Peace be to thee. ¹⁴ And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hearken to your words; when ye come out of that house or city, shake off the very dust of your feet:

And He saith unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of my cup, and shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but to those for whom it is prepared by my Father. ²⁴ And when the other ten heard it, they were provoked at the two brethren: ²⁵ but Jesus called them to Him and said, Ye know that the princes of the gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority upon them: ²⁶ it shall not be so among you; but whosoever would be great among you, let him be your minister, and whoever would be chief among you, ²⁷ let him be your servant: ²⁸ as the Son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many.

⁴ for they bind grievous and intolerable burthens, and impose them upon men; but they themselves will not put a finger to them: ⁵ but they do all their works to be seen by men; they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, ⁶ and love the uppermost places at feasts, ⁷ and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public assemblies, and to be called by men Rabbi, Rabbi. ⁸ But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor even Christ, and ye are all brethren.

⁴⁵ Who then is the faithful and prudent servant, whom his lord hath set over his family to give them food in due season?

²¹ and his lord said to him, Well done, my good and trusty servant, thou hast been faithful in a few things, I will set thee over many, enter into thy master's joy. ²² And he also who had received the two talents came to him and said, Lord, thou deliveredst to me two talents, behold I have gained two other talents with them: ²³ his lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful in a few things, I will set thee over many, enter into the joy of thy lord.

³⁴ But they held their peace; for they had been disputing with each other by the way who should be the greatest.

²² Blessed are ye when men shall hate you, and reject you, and reproach you, and cast out your name as infamous on account of the Son of man.

⁷ and he from within shall answer and say, Do not be troublesome; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed, I cannot rise to give thee.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who is indeed that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his family to give out the measure of food in due season?

¹⁰ He, that is faithful in the lest, is faithful also in much: and he, that is unjust in the lest, is unjust also in much. ¹¹ If therefore ye have not been faithful in the false riches, who will intrust you with the true? ¹² and if ye have not been faithful in that which was another's, who will give you that which is your own?

²⁴ And there was also a dispute among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest: ²⁵ but He said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority are called benefactors. ²⁶ But ye shall not do so: but let the greatest among you be as the younger; and he that presides as he that serveth. ²⁷ For which is greater, he that sitteth at table, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at table? but I am among you as one that serveth.

²⁰ For every one that doth evil, hateth the light; and he cometh not to the light, least his deeds should be reproved.

²² These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed, that if any one confessed Him to be Christ, he should be turned out of the synagogue.

³⁴ They answered, and said unto him, Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? ³⁵ And they cast him out. Now Jesus heard that they had turned him out of the synagogue; and when He met him, He said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

³ To him the porter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice; and He calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

²⁷ and I know them, and they follow me.

²⁶ If any man would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: and if any one serve me, him will my Father honour.

³⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while the light is to be with you; walk while ye have the light, least darkness overtake you; for he that walketh in the dark knoweth not whither he goeth. ³⁶ While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and then went away, and concealed himself from them.

³⁵ And he that saw it testifieth it, and his testimony is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye may believe.

²⁴ This is the disciple that testifieth of these things, and that writeth them: and we know that his testimony is true.

⁴¹ And they departed from the presence of the council rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer disgrace for his name.

⁴ Now they that were dispersed went about preaching the word.

²² And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a righteous man, and one that feareth God, and of a good character among all the nation of the Jews, hath been warned from God by an holy angel, to send for thee to his house, and to hear what thou shalt say.

³ They therefore, being brought forward on their way by the church, passed through Phenicia and Samaria, relating the conversion of the Gentiles: and they gave great joy to all the brethren.

²⁹ That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from fornication: from which ye will do well to keep yourselves. Farewel.

²⁹ And the whole city was filled with confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus two Macedonians, fellow-travellers with Paul.

⁴ And there accompanied him to Asia, Sopater the Berean, and of the Thessalonians Aristarchus and Secundus, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy: and the Asiatics,

⁵ But when we had completed these days, we departed and went our way, all of them attending us with their wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore and prayed.

¹² And one Ananias, a devout observer of the law, who had a good character from all the Jews that dwelt there,

⁸ And first I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is celebrated through the whole world: ⁹ for God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, how incessantly I make mention of you always in my prayers,

¹⁰ be tenderly affected with brotherly love to each other, in honor preferring one another:

²⁴ for I hope to see you as I pass by, and to be brought forward by you on my way thither, after I have first had some enjoyment of you.

¹ I recommend to you Phebe, our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea: ² that ye receive her in the Lord as becometh saints, and assist her in whatever affair she may have need of you; for she also hath been a helper of many others, as well as of myself. ³ Salute Priscilla and Aquila my fellow-laborers in Christ Jesus: ⁴ (who for my life exposed their own; to whom not I only give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles:) ⁵ and the church in their house. Salute those of the family of Narcissus, who are in the Lord. ¹² Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who are labouring in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, who hath laboured much in the Lord. ¹³ Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and even mine. ¹⁴ Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren that are with them. ¹⁵ Salute Philologus and Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints that are with them. ¹⁶ Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you.

²³ Gaius my host, and that of the whole church saluteth you. Erastus, the chamberlain of the city, and our brother Quartus saluteth you.

¹⁴ I thank God that I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius:

⁵ Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whose means ye embraced the faith, even as the Lord gave success to each of them? ⁶ I have planted, Apollos watered: but God gave the increase. ⁷ So that neither he that planteth is any thing, nor he that watereth, but God that giveth the increase. ⁸ And he that planteth, and he that watereth, are as one: but each shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. ⁹ For we are fellow-laborers, the servants of God: and ye are the husbandry of God, ye are the building of God.

¹⁴ I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I admonish you: ¹⁵ for if ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet ye have not many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you by the gospel. ¹⁶ I beseech you therefore, be ye imitators of me.

¹ It is commonly reported that there is lewdness among you, and such lewdness as is not named even amongst the heathens, that one should have his father's wife. ² And are ye puffed up, and have not rather grieved? that he who hath committed this fact might be expelled from among you? ³ For I indeed, absent in body, but present in spirit, have already, as if I were present, judged him who hath wrought this wickedness: in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁴ when ye are assembled together with my spirit, by the power, I say, ⁵ of our Lord Jesus Christ, to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Your boasting is not good.

¹² If others partake of this power over you, may not we rather? though we have not used this power; but we bear all things, least we should cause any hindrance to the gospel of Christ. ¹³ Do ye not know, that they who are employed about the sacrifices have their food from the temple? and they, who attend at the altar, are partakers with the altar? ¹⁴ So also the Lord hath ordained, that those who preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel. ¹⁵ But I have availed myself of none of these things. Nor have I written these things, that it might be so done as to me: for it were better for me to die, than that any one should make this my glorying void.

¹⁸ What is my reward then but this? that when I preach I may make the gospel of Christ not expensive, that so I may not abuse my power in the gospel.

¹ Be ye then imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.

¹⁰ If Timothy should come, see that he be with you without fear: for he is employed in the work of the Lord, as I also am. ¹¹ Let no one therefore despise him: but forward him on his journey in peace, that he may come to me; for I expect him with the brethren. As to our brother Apollos,

¹⁶ and then to come to you again from Macedonia, and by you to be forwarded on my way to Judea.

¹ Therefore having received this ministry, as we have obtained mercy, we are not disheartened: ² but have rejected shameful disguises, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth, recommending ourselves to every man's conscience, in the sight of God. ³ And if our gospel also be veiled, it is to those that perish;

⁵ for we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your servants for the sake of Jesus.

¹ And we co-operating with Him do also exhort you that ye receive not the grace of God in vain:

² Receive us---we have injured no man, we have corrupted no one, we have over-reached no one. ³ I speak not this to condemn you: for I said before that ye are so much in our hearts that we could live and die with you.

⁶ But God, who comforteth those that are brought low, comforted us by the coming of Titus: ⁷ and not only by his coming, but especially by the consolation wherewith he was comforted on your account, acquainting us with your earnest desire towards us, your grief, and your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced greatly.

²³ If then there be any inquiry about Titus, he is my collegue and fellow-laborer among you: and if our brethren be inquired after, they are the messengers of the churches, and the glory of Christ.

¹ Now I Paul myself exhort you, by the meekness and lenity of Christ, who in presence am lowly among you, ² but being absent am bold towards you, yea I intreat you, that I may not be bold, when I am present, with that confidence, wherewith I think to proceed against some, who censure us as walking after the flesh. ³ For though we are in the flesh, we do not carry on our war according to the flesh: ⁴ (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the demolishing of bulwarks:) ⁵ destroying false reasonings, and every height that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and captivating every thought to the obedience of Christ. ⁶ And being prepared to avenge all disobedience, since your obedience is fulfilled. ⁷ Do ye look at things according to the outward appearance? If any one is confident in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again of himself, that as he is Christ's, so we also are Christ's. ⁸ For though I should boast yet more of our authority, (which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction) I should not be ashamed: ⁹ that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters; ¹⁰ for his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. ¹¹ But let such a one know this, that as we are in word by letters, when absent, such also shall we be in fact when present.

⁷ Have I committed an offence in humbling myself that ye might be exalted? and in that I have preached the gospel of God to you gratis? ⁸ I trespassed on other churches, receiving maintenance from them for your service. ⁹ And when I was present among you, and in want, I was chargeable to no one. For the brethren that came from Macedonia supplied my want: and in every thing I have kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself.

¹³ For what is it that ye were inferior in to the rest of the churches, unless it be that I myself was not burdensome to you?--- Forgive me this injury.

² I said before, and I again tell you beforehand, as if I were present the second time; and being absent I now write to those who have sinned heretofore, and to all the rest, that if I come again I will not spare:

¹⁴ But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all,---If thou, who art a Jew, livest sometimes after the manner of the gentiles, and not like the Jews, why dost thou now in a manner compel the gentiles to judaize?

¹⁹ My little children, of whom I do as it were travail in birth again,

¹⁰ And therefore as we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, but especially to those who are of the houshold of faith.

⁷ For a bishop must be blameless as the steward of God, not self-willed, not passionate, not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of sordid gain: ⁸ but hospitable, benevolent, sober, just, holy, temperate; ⁹ holding fast the faithful word, according as he hath been taught, that he may be able both to instruct in sound doctrine, and to convince gainsayers. ¹⁰ For there are many disorderly persons, vain-talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision; whose mouths must be stopped: ¹¹ who subvert whole families, teaching what they ought not, for shameful gain: ¹² as said one of themselves, a prophet of their own, "The Cretans are always liars, mischievous beasts, sluggish gluttons." ¹³ This testimony is true: for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be found in the faith; ¹⁴ not attending to Jewish fables, and the precepts of men who turn away from the truth. ¹⁵ To the pure indeed all things are pure; but to the polluted and unbelieving nothing is pure; even their mind and conscience is polluted. ¹⁶ They profess to know God, but in works deny Him, being abominable and disobedient, and to every thing that is good void of understanding.

⁵ (hearing of the faith which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and of thy love to all the saints,) ⁶ that the communication of thy faith may become effectual in the acknowledgement of all the good that is in you towards Christ Jesus: ⁷ for we have much joy and comfort in thy love, because by thee, dear brother, the bowels of the saints are refreshed.

¹⁰ I intreat thee then for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds,

²⁴ Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke my fellow-laborers, salute thee.

¹² that ye would not be sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience are inheriting the promises.

¹⁰ as every one hath received a gift, imparting it to each other, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ¹¹ If any one speak, let it be as declaring the oracles of God: if any one minister, let it be as from the power which God affordeth him: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and dominion for ever and ever.
