²⁸ Never in the slightest degree be frightened by your opponents, for such fearlessness will be strong evidence to them of their impending destruction, but to you a sure sign, and that from God, of your salvation.

⁴ So I tell you, my friends, never be afraid of those who kill the body but after that have nothing more that they can do. ⁵ But I will show you whom to fear. Fear Him who, after killing you, has power to hurl you down to the pit; yes, I tell you, fear Him. ⁶ Are not sparrows sold five for two cents? And yet not one of them is forgotten by God! ⁷ Yes, the very hairs on your heads have all been counted by God! Stop being afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

¹² But before all this takes place, people will arrest you and persecute you, and turn you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. ¹³ It will furnish you an opportunity to testify. ¹⁴ So you must purpose in your hearts not to prepare beforehand how to make your defense, ¹⁵ for I will give you such wisdom of speech as all your opponents combined will not be able to resist and refute. ¹⁶ Yes, you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and kinsmen and friends, and they will put some of you to death, ¹⁷ and you will be continuously hated by everyone, because you bear my name. ¹⁸ And yet not a single hair on your head will perish. ¹⁹ By your endurance you will win your souls.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered them, "You must decide whether it is right in the sight of God to obey you instead of Him, ²⁰ for we cannot keep from telling what we have seen and heard." ²¹ So, after further threatening them, they turned them loose, because they could not find any way to punish them, on account of the people, because they all continued to praise God for what had taken place, ²² for the man on whom the wonderful cure had been performed was more than forty years old. ²³ When they were turned loose, the apostles went back to their companions and told them what the high priests and elders had said to them. ²⁴ When they heard this, with one united prayer to God they said: "O Lord, you are the Maker of heaven, earth, and sea, and everything that is in them, and the One ²⁵ who spoke thus through the Holy Spirit by the lips of our forefather David, your servant: 'Why did the heathen rage, and the peoples make vain designs? ²⁶ The kings of the earth took their stand. The rulers met against the Lord, and too, against His Christ.' ²⁷ "For in this city they actually met against your holy Servant Jesus, whom you had consecrated -- Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the heathen and the peoples of Israel, ²⁸ to do all that your hand and will had predetermined to take place. ²⁹ And now, Lord, give attention to their threats and help your slaves with perfect courage to continue to speak your message, ³⁰ by stretching out your hand to cure people and to perform signs and wonders by the authority of your holy Servant Jesus." ³¹ When they had prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and continued courageously to speak God's message.

⁴⁰ They were convinced by him, and after calling the apostles in and having them flogged, they charged them to stop speaking on the authority of Jesus, and then turned them loose. ⁴¹ So they went out from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer disgrace for Jesus' name; ⁴² and not for a single day did they stop teaching in the temple square and in private houses the good news of Jesus the Christ.

²⁸ "So you must understand that this message of God's salvation has been sent to the heathen; and they will listen to it!"

¹⁷ and if children, then also heirs, heirs of God and fellow-heirs with Christ if in reality we share His sufferings, so that we may share His glory too.

² But, although we had just suffered and been insulted, as you remember, at Philippi, we again summoned courage by the help of God, in spite of the terrific strain, to tell you God's good news.

⁵ This is a proof of God's righteous judgment, His aim being to let you show yourselves worthy of His kingdom, for which you are suffering; since, ⁶ indeed, it is right for God to repay with crushing sorrows those who cause you these crushing sorrows, ⁷ For the Spirit that God has given us does not impart timidity but power and love and self-control. ⁸ So you must never be ashamed of me His prisoner, but suffer for the good news in fellowship with me and by the power of God.

¹¹ This message is to be trusted: "If we indeed have died with Him, we will live with Him too. ¹² "If we patiently endure, we will reign with Him too. If we disown Him, He will disown us too.

⁶ So we can confidently say: "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can men do to me?"

¹² Dearly beloved, do not be astonished that a test by fire is coming upon you, as though something strange were happening to you, ¹³ but so far as you are sharing Christ's sufferings, keep on rejoicing, so that at the uncovering of His glory you may rejoice triumphantly. ¹⁴ If you are suffering abuse because you bear the name of Christ, you are happy, because the glorious Spirit of God is resting upon you.

¹⁰ Do not be so afraid of what you are to suffer. See! The devil is going to throw some of you into prison to be tested there and for ten days to suffer pressing troubles. Each one of you must prove to be faithful, even if you have to die, and I will give you the crown of life.
