²⁷ Only you must practice living lives that are worthy of the good news, so that whether I come and see you or stay away, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, and that with one purpose you are continuing to cooperate in the fight for faith in the good news.

²⁵ But because He knew their thoughts, He said to them, "Any kingdom that is not united is in the process of destruction, and any city or family that is not united cannot last.

²⁰ "I make this petition, not for them only, but for all who ever come to believe in me through their message, ²¹ for them all to be one, just as you, Father, are in union with me and I in union with you, for them to be in union with us, so that the world may be convinced that you have sent me.

⁴⁶ Day after day they regularly attended the temple; they practiced breaking their bread together in their homes, and eating their food with glad and simple hearts,

³² Now there was but one heart and soul in the vast number of those who had become believers, and not one of them claimed that anything that he had was his own, but they shared everything that they had as common property.

⁵ through whom we have received God's favor and a commission as an apostle in His name to urge upon all the heathen obedience inspired by faith,

⁹ Indeed, my witness is God, whom I serve in my spirit by telling the good news about His Son, that I never fail to mention you every time I pray,

¹⁶ For I am not ashamed of the good news, for it is God's power for the salvation of everyone who trusts, of the Jew first and then of the Greek.

⁸ But what does it say? "God's message is close to you, on your very lips and in your heart"; that is, the message about faith which we preach.

⁴ For just as we have many parts united in our physical bodies, and the parts do not all have the same function, ⁵ so we, though many, are united in one body through union with Christ, and we are individually parts of one another.

¹⁶ in making me a minister of Christ Jesus to the heathen peoples, to have me act as a sacrificing minister of the good news, in order that my offering of the heathen peoples to God may be acceptable, consecrated by the Holy Spirit.

²⁹ And I feel sure that when I do come to you, I shall come with Christ's abundant blessing on me.

¹⁰ Now I beg you all, brothers, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, to be harmonious in what you say and not to have factions among you, but to be perfectly harmonious in your minds and judgments.

¹² For just as the human body is one and yet has many parts, and all the parts of the body, many as they are, constitute but one body, so it is with Christ. ¹³ For by one Spirit all of us, Jews or Greeks, slaves or freemen, have been baptized into one body, and were all imbued with one Spirit. ¹⁴ For the body does not consist of one part but of many. ¹⁵ If the foot says, "Since I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body. ¹⁶ If the ear says, "Since I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," that does not make it any less a part of the body. ¹⁷ If all the body were an eye, how could we hear? If all the body were an ear, how could we smell? ¹⁸ But as it now is, God has placed the parts, every one of them, in the body just as He wanted them to be. ¹⁹ If they were all one part, how could it be a body? ²⁰ But as it now is, there are many parts, but one body. ²¹ The eye cannot say to the hand, "I do not need you," or the hand to the feet, "I do not need you." ²² No, on the contrary, even those parts of the body that seem to be most delicate are indispensable, ²³ and the parts of it we deem devoid of honor we dress with special honor, and our ill-shaped parts receive more careful attention, ²⁴ while our well-shaped parts do not want for anything. Yes, God has perfectly adjusted the body, giving great honor to its apparently inferior parts, ²⁵ so that there is no disharmony in the body, but all the parts have a common care for one another. ²⁶ If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it. If one part receives an honor, all the parts can share its joy. ²⁷ So you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. ²⁸ And God has placed people in the church, first as apostles, second as prophets, third as teachers, then wonder-workers; then people with power to cure the sick, helpers, managers, ecstatic speakers. ²⁹ Not all are apostles, are they? Not all are prophets, are they? Not all are teachers, are they? Not all are wonder-workers, are they? ³⁰ Not all are people with power to cure the sick, are they? Not all are ecstatic speakers, are they? Not all can explain ecstatic speaking, can they? ³¹ But you must earnestly continue to cultivate your higher spiritual gifts. And yet I will show you a way that is better by far:

⁵⁸ So, my dear brothers, continue to be firm, incapable of being moved, always letting the cup run over in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the service of the Lord is never thrown away.

¹³ Be always on your guard; stand firm in your faith; keep on acting like men; continue to grow in strength; ¹⁴ let everything be done in love.

⁴ In their case, the god of this world has blinded the eyes of the unbelievers, to keep the glorious light of the good news of Christ, who is the likeness of God, from dawning upon them.

¹³ For through the test you get by doing this service you will continue praising God for your fidelity to your confession of the good news of Christ, and for the liberality of your contributions to them and all others;

¹¹ Finally, brothers, goodbye! Practice the perfecting of your characters, keep listening to my appeals, continue thinking in harmony and living in peace, and the loving, peace-giving God will be with you.

⁷ which is not really another one; only there are certain people who are trying to unsettle you and want to turn the good news of Christ upside down.

¹³ You too, as you have heard the message of the truth, the good news that means your salvation, and as you have trusted in Him too, have been stamped with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit,

¹⁵ This is why I myself, since I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and in all His people,

¹ So I, a prisoner for the Lord's sake, entreat you to live lives worthy of the call you have received,

³ continuing with eager earnestness to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the tie of peace. ⁴ There is but one body and one Spirit, just as there is but one hope resulting from the call you have received; ⁵ there is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism, ⁶ one God and Father of all, who is over us all, who pervades us all, and who is within us all.

¹ So, if there is any appeal in our union with Christ, if there is any persuasive power in love, if we have any common share in the Spirit, if you have any tenderheartedness and sympathy, ² fill up my cup of joy by living in harmony, by fostering the same disposition of love, your hearts beating in unison, your minds set on one purpose.

¹² So, my dearly loved friends, as you have always been obedient, so now with reverence and awe keep on working clear down to the finishing point of your salvation not only as though I were with you but much more because I am away;

²⁴ Really, I am trusting that by the help of the Lord I soon shall come myself.

¹⁸ For there are many, of whom I have often told you, and now tell you in tears, who practice living as the enemies of the cross of Christ.

⁴ because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God's people,

¹⁰ so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord to His full satisfaction, by perennially bearing fruit in every good enterprise and by a steady growth in fuller knowledge of God;

¹¹ for you know how, as a father deals with his children, we used to encourage you, cheer you on, and charge each of you ¹² to live lives worthy of God who calls you into His kingdom and His glory.

⁶ But now, since Timothy has just come back to me from you, and brought me good tidings of your faith and love, and told me how kindly you remembered me and that you are longing to see me as much as I am to see you,

¹ Now, brothers, we ask and beg you, in the face of our union with the Lord Jesus, as you once received from us how you ought to live so as to please God -- as indeed you are living -- to continue to live this life better and better.

¹¹ as measured by the glorious good news of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.

¹⁹ by keeping your hold on faith and a good conscience; for some have thrust the latter aside and so have made shipwreck of their faith.

⁷ I have fought the fight for the good, I have run my race, I have kept faith.

¹⁰ to stop resisting them and stealing from them, but to show such perfect fidelity as to adorn, in everything they do, the teaching of God our Saviour.

⁵ because I continue to hear of the love and faith you have in the Lord Jesus and all His people,

¹⁸ The harvest of uprightness is grown from the seed of peace by those who are peacemakers.

⁴ It is through these that He has given us His precious and glorious promises, so that through them, after you have escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires, you may come to share in the divine nature. ⁵ Now for this very reason you must do your level best to supplement your faith with moral character, moral character with knowledge, ⁶ knowledge with self-control, self-control with patient endurance, patient endurance with piety, ⁷ piety with brotherly affection, brotherly affection with universal love. ⁸ For if you have these qualities and they continue to increase in you, they will make you neither idle nor unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For whoever lacks these qualities is blind -- or short-sighted-- and forgetful of the cleansing that he has received from his former sins.

¹¹ If all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what men you ought to be! What holy and pious lives you ought to lead,

¹⁴ Therefore, dearly beloved, since you are expecting this, be in earnest to be found by Him without a blot, without reproach, and at peace.

³ For I am happy to have some brothers come and testify to the truth that is in you, since you are living by the truth. ⁴ I have no greater spiritual blessing than this, to hear that my children are living by the truth.

³ Dearly beloved, while I was doing my best to begin writing you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write and urge you to carry on a vigorous defense of the faith that was once for all entrusted to God's people.
