¹ The Pharisees also and the Sadducees came, and, tempting, desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said to them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

²⁰ For I say to you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

¹¹ And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

¹⁴ Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

³⁸ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. ³⁹ But he answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh for a sign, and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah.

¹ Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, who were of Jerusalem, saying,

⁶ Then Jesus said to them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that ye do not understand that I spoke not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood that he did not caution them against the leaven of bread, but against the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

³ The Pharisees also came to him, tempting him, and saying to him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

¹⁵ Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.

¹⁸ But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

²³ The same day came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

³⁴ But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were assembled about him. ³⁵ Then one of them who was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

They say to him, Twelve. ²⁰ And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. ²¹ And he said to them, How is it that ye do not understand?

² And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

¹⁸ Then come to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

²⁵ And behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

¹⁶ And others tempting him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

²⁹ And when the people were assembled in crowds, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet. ³⁰ For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also shall the Son of man be to this generation.

⁵³ And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to solicit him to speak of many things; ⁵⁴ Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁵⁴ And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rising in the west, immediately ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. ⁵⁵ And when ye perceive the south wind blowing, ye say, There will be heat; and it cometh to pass. ⁵⁶ Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky, and of the earth; but how is it, that ye do not discern this time?

²³ But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, Why tempt ye me?

²⁷ Then came to him certain of the Sadducees (who deny that there is any resurrection) and they asked him,

³⁰ They said therefore to him, What sign showest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? ³¹ Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

⁶ This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

¹ And as they were speaking to the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them,

¹⁷ Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him; (which is the sect of the Sadducees) and were filled with indignation,

⁶ But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. ⁷ And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
