¹ Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that no gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not erected doors in the gates— ² Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me. ³ And I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you? ⁴ And four times they sent to me in this way, and I sent them the same answer. ⁵ Then Sanballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. ⁶ in which was written: It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says [it, that] thou and the Jews think to rebel, for which cause thou buildest the wall, and according to these words thou wilt become their king. ⁷ you also have appointed prophets to proclaim about you in Jerusalem, "There is a king in Judah!" Since these words are being reported to the king, come and let's meet together. ⁸ And I sent to him, saying, These things which you are saying are not happening, for you pretend them out of your own heart. ⁹ For, they all, were seeking to put us in fear, saying, Their hands will slacken from the work, and it will not be accomplished. Now, therefore, strengthen thou my hands! ¹⁰ Now I went into the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined at home, and he said, "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you—during the night they are coming to kill you." ¹¹ But I said, "Should a man like me run away? And would a man like me go into the temple so that he can save his life? I will not go in!" ¹² And, behold, I understood that God had not sent him, but that he said this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. ¹³ He had been hired to make me afraid so I would sin by doing what he suggested. Then they could create a slanderous report to use against me. ¹⁴ Remember, O God, Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their deeds, and the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets who tried to alarm me. ¹⁵ So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days. ¹⁶ When our enemies heard of this, all of the nations surrounding us were afraid and lost their confidence. They knew that this work had been done with the help of our God. ¹⁷ Also, in those days the nobles of Judah increasingly sent their letters to Tobiah, and letters from Tobiah returned to them. ¹⁸ For many in Judah were bound by oath to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah. His son Jehohanan took as a wife the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. ¹⁹ and they kept on, telling me what he said and conveying to him what I said. And Tobias sent letters to frighten me.

¹⁰ But when Sanballat the Horonite and the Ammonite servant Tobiah heard this, they were greatly displeased that a person had come to seek the welfare of the Israelites.

¹⁹ But Sanballat the Horonite, the Ammonite servant Tobiah, and Geshem the Arab heard it, and they mocked and despised us, saying, "What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?"

¹ Then Eliashib the high priest and his brothers the priests arose and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and erected its doors. They consecrated it up to the Tower of the Hundred and up to the Tower of Hananel.

³ The sons of Hassenaah built the fish gate. They laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.

⁶ And the Old Gate was repaired by Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and set up its doors and its locks and its bars.

¹ But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews.

⁶ So we rebuilt the wall, and all of the wall was joined up to half its height. For the people had a heart to do it. ⁷ Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem were going forward and the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.

²⁵ “Know therefore and discern that from the going out of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. It will be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times.

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁹ Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

¹² The sons of Elpaal: Eber, Misham, Shemed who built Ono and Lod with its surrounding villages,

³⁵ Lod, and Ono, the Valley of Craftsmen.

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart.

¹² The wicked plotteth against the righteous, and gnasheth his teeth against him.

³² The wicked looketh out for the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.

²⁴ A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart. ²⁵ When his speech is charming, do not believe him; for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

⁴ And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

² Then Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, and the ten men who were with him, got up, and attacking Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, put to death him whom the king of Babylon had made ruler over the land.

³¹ And they come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words. But they will not do them. For with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their unjust gain.

⁴ The best of them is like a brier. The most upright is worse than a thorn hedge. The day of your watchmen, even your visitation, has come; now is the time of their confusion. ⁵ Do not trust in a neighbor. Do not put confidence in a friend. With the woman lying in your embrace, be careful of the words of your mouth.

¹⁹ The scribes and the high priests were eager to lay hands on him at that very time, for they knew that he had aimed the illustration at them; but they were afraid of the people. ²⁰ Keeping a close watch on Him, they sent spies, who pretended to be innocent, so that they might latch on to some thing He said, so as to hand Him over to the power and the authority of the governor. ²¹ So they questioned Him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and you do not show favoritism but teach the way of God in truth.

¹⁵ The simple believes every word, but the prudent man gives thought to his steps.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

¹⁶ Look, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

³⁰ saying, 'This man began to build, and was not able to finish.'

⁴ While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.

¹⁵ Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that all may see your progress. ¹⁶ Take heed to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in them, for if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

⁶ So Delilah asked Samson, "Please tell me the secret to your great strength and how you may be tied up and tortured."

¹⁰ Delilah said to Samson, You have made a fool of me and told me lies! Now please tell me how you can be tied.

¹⁵ And Delilah said to Sampson, How can you say I love you, when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have deceived me, and have not told me where your great strength lies. ¹⁶ When she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, he became tired to death. ¹⁷ So he told her everything, and said to her, No razor has ever come on my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, then my strength will go from me and I will become weak like any other man. ¹⁸ When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent for the lords of the Philistines saying, Come up once more, for he has told me everything. Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money with them. ¹⁹ She made him sleep on her knees, and then she called for a man who shaved off the seven braids of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that the LORD had left him.

²¹ With her fair words she overcame him, forcing him with her smooth lips.

⁵ yet because this widow bothers me, I will protect her, so that she may not finally wear me out with her coming.' "

⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

⁵ We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

²⁶ Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah and Shebna and Joah said to the chief commander, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we are understanding, but you must not speak Judean with us in the ears of the people who are on the wall." ²⁷ And Rab-shakeh said to them, Is it to thy master and to thee that my master sent me to speak these words? Is it not to the men that sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you? ²⁸ Then Rabshakeh stood up and cried out loud, "Listen to what the great king, the king of Assyria has to say.

¹¹ in order that Satan should not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

¹³ For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. ¹⁵ It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.

¹¹ Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.

¹⁰ and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

¹² be it known to the king that the Jews who have come up from near you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the wall and repairing the foundation.

¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.

¹ Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that no gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not erected doors in the gates— ² Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.

³ They use their tongues like a bow. Lies rather than truth fly throughout the land. They progress from one evil to another, and they don't know me," declares the LORD. ⁴ Everyone beware of his neighbor, and do not trust any brother! For every brother will supplant his neighbor, and will walk with slanders. ⁵ Friends deceive each other, and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They weary themselves commiting iniquity. ⁶ "You live in the middle of deceit. Through deceit they refuse to know me," says the LORD.

¹⁰ Indeed, I hear many people whispering, "Terror on every side. Denounce him, let's denounce him!" All my close friends watch my steps and say, "Perhaps he will be deceived, and we can prevail against him and take vengeance on him."

¹¹ Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

² And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding payment of taxes to Caesar, and proclaiming Himself to be Christ, a king.”

¹³ When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Stone Pavement, which in Aramaic is Gabbatha.

⁸ Why not say as we are being slanderously reported as saying and as some claim that we say "Let us do evil that good may come"? Their condemnation is just.

⁸ through glory and dishonor, evil report and good report; true, yet regarded as impostors;

¹² Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us. ¹³ Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to the king as the supreme authority,

¹⁶ and keep a clear conscience, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

¹⁰ But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you will say, Absalom is king in Hebron. ¹¹ Meanwhile, 200 men left Jerusalem with Absalom. They had been invited to go along, but were innocent, not knowing anything about what was happening. ¹² Absalom was offering sacrifices. He sent for Ahithophel, David's adviser, to come from his home in Giloh. Meanwhile, the conspiracy grew stronger. The number of people siding with Absalom kept getting larger.

⁷ And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest, and they followed after Adonijah.

¹⁸ But now, look! Adonijah has become king! And now, my lord the king, you do not know!

²⁵ For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Look, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, 'Long live king Adonijah.'

³⁴ And have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel. Blow the trumpet, and say, 'Long live king Solomon.'

¹² And, behold, I understood that God had not sent him, but that he said this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. ¹³ He had been hired to make me afraid so I would sin by doing what he suggested. Then they could create a slanderous report to use against me.

¹⁵ Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”

⁴ For, in truth, ye, do besmear with falsehood, Worthless physicians, all of you!

³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

¹² Those who seek my life lay traps for me. Those who are out to harm me talk about ruining me. All day long they think of ways to deceive me.

² Your tongue devises woes, Like a honed razor, you who practice deceit."

⁴ No one calls for justice and no one pleads his case truthfully. People trust pointless arguments and speak lies. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil.

²⁷ Then both the kings with their hearts bent on mischief will speak lies at one table. But it will not prosper. Because an end is still put off for a time,

³⁴ You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

¹² Yet my accusers did not find me debating with anyone in the temple or riling up a crowd in the synagogues or in the city. ¹³ and they cannot prove to you the charges they are now bringing against me.

⁷ And when Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges against him, which they could not prove.

¹⁰ But Paul said, "I am standing before Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be tried. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well.

⁶ David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because they were grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.

⁷ But you be strong, and don't let your hands be slack; for your work will be rewarded.”

¹⁸ And they called with a great voice in Jewish, against the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them and to terrify them, that they might capture the city.

¹ Now the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple for the LORD the God of Israel. ² they came to Zorobabel and to the chiefs of the families, and said, Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek our God, and we sacrifice to him, from the days of Asaradan, king of Assur, who brought us here. ³ But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we alone will build unto the LORD God of Israel as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us. ⁴ Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build ⁵ They hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia. ⁶ At the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, they lodged a formal accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. ⁷ In the time of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his friends, sent a letter to Artaxerxes, king of Persia, writing it in the Aramaic language. ⁸ Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows, ⁹ (then Rehum the royal officer, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the envoys, the officials, the Persians, the Erechs, the Babylonians, the Susians (that is the Elamites) ¹⁰ and the rest of the peoples, whom the great and noble Osnappar hath exiled, and set in the city of Samaria,—and the rest Beyond the River, and so forth: ¹¹ This is the copy of the letter that they sent: To King Artaxerxes, From your servants the men beyond the River. ¹² be it known to the king that the Jews who have come up from near you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and wicked city. They are finishing the wall and repairing the foundation. ¹³ Now be it known to the king that if this city is built and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute and toll, and the royal revenue will be reduced. ¹⁴ Now, since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right for us to see the king`s injury, therefore have we sent and informed the king; ¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed. ¹⁶ We inform the king that, if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River. ¹⁷ The king sent a reply: "To Rehum the royal officer, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their associates who live in Samaria and the rest of the province Beyond the River, greetings. And now ¹⁸ the letter that you sent to us has been translated and read before me. ¹⁹ I decreed, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it. ²⁰ and mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, even rulers over all beyond the river, and toll, tribute, and custom is given to them. ²¹ And now establish a decree for those men to cease work, so that that city shall not be built up any more! ²² Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings? ²³ As soon as a copy of the letter from King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, to Shimshai the scribe, and to their colleagues, they traveled quickly to Jerusalem and compelled the Jews to cease by force of arms. ²⁴ Then the work of the house of God in Jerusalem stopped. So it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

¹⁰ Meanwhile, the people of Judah said, "The builders are tired and there's so much rubble that we can't reconstruct the wall!" ¹¹ Our enemies said, "Before they notice or see us, we'll penetrate their midst, kill them, and stop the work!" ¹² When the Jews who lived by them came, they said to us ten times from all places, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.” ¹³ I stationed the people behind the deepest part of the wall in the open places according to their families, with their swords, spears, and bows. ¹⁴ And I looked, got up, and said to the nobles, prefects, and the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses."

¹⁴ Remember, O God, Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their deeds, and the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets who tried to alarm me.

³ When I am afraid I will trust in You.

³⁵ You are awesome, God, in your sanctuaries. The God of Israel gives strength and power to his people. Praise be to God!

¹ In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.

³ When I called, you answered me. You made me bold. You strengthened me.

³ Strengthen the weak hands, and make the feeble knees firm. ⁴ Tell those who have a fearful heart, "Be strong. Do not be afraid. Look, your God will come with vengeance, God's retribution. He will come and save you.

¹⁰ "'Do not fear for I am with you! Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.'

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, "Let this man be put to death because he's undermining the efforts of the soldiers who remain in this city and that of all the people by speaking words like these to them. Indeed, this man is not seeking the well-being of this people, but rather their harm."

¹² I will make them strong in the LORD, and in his name they will walk, declares the LORD.

⁹ But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.

¹⁶ I pray that out of the riches of His glory, He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.

¹³ I can do anything through him who gives me strength.

¹² Therefore strengthen your limp hands and weak knees.

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

⁵ And against the wall of the house he set chambers round about the temple and the ark.

⁸ For the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from Ahab every male, bond and free that is left in Israel:

³ He remained with her in the temple of the LORD, hidden for six years while Athaliah was reigning over the land.

²⁴ And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and brake them, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and made him altars in all corners of Jerusalem.

³ In the first month of his first year as king, he opened the doors of the LORD’s temple and repaired them.

⁷ They also shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps. And they did not burn incense or offer burnt offerings in the sanctuary to the God of Israel.

¹⁶ Then sent I to Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, the rulers, and Joiarib and Elnathan, which were men of understanding.

³¹ From the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshiah, Malkijah, Shemaiah, Simeon,

¹² And, behold, I understood that God had not sent him, but that he said this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

¹³ These are of those who rebel against the light. They don't know its ways, nor stay in its paths. ¹⁴ With the light, riseth the murderer, He slayeth the poor and needy, And, in the night, he becometh like a thief. ¹⁵ And the eye of the adulterer waits for dusk, saying, 'No eye will see me,' and he places a covering on his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves in; they know not the light: ¹⁷ "For deep darkness is morning to all of them. They are friends with the terrors of deep darkness.

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue! ³ What shall be given to you, and what more shall be done to you, deceitful tongue?

⁹ With his mouth the godless man destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the righteous be delivered

⁵ Jeremiah told Baruch: "I am no longer allowed to go to the LORD's Temple.

²⁴ Then the Spirit entered into me, and set me on my feet. He spoke with me, and said to me, “Go, shut yourself inside your house.

¹⁰ "Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors and not light useless fires on the altar! I'm not pleased with you," says the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "and I'll accept no offerings from you.

¹⁵ Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

²⁰ Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

³⁰ And the whole city was moved, and the people ran together; and laying hold on Paul, they dragged him out of the temple: and immediately the gates were shut.

⁷ And why do ye discourage the children of Israel from going over into the land that the LORD has given them? ⁸ This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. ⁹ they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, and discouraged the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land that the LORD had given them.

⁵ For he put his life in his hand and killed the Philistine and the LORD worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?

³ And I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?

⁹ For, they all, were seeking to put us in fear, saying, Their hands will slacken from the work, and it will not be accomplished. Now, therefore, strengthen thou my hands!

³ Look, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. ⁴ Your words have supported him who was falling, you have strengthened the feeble knees. ⁵ But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified. ⁶ Is not your pious fear your confidence, And your flawless ways your expectation?

¹ In the LORD, I take refuge. How can you say to my soul, "Flee as a bird to your mountain." ² For lo, the wicked bend their bow, they arrange their arrow upon the string, to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.

⁶ For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever.

⁸ His heart is secure, he has no fears; in the end he will look in triumph on his adversaries.

¹ The wicked flee when no one pursues; but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

¹ Dead flies cause the oil of the perfumer to send forth an evil odor, [so] a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.

¹⁸ It will completely destroy the splendor of his forests and fertile fields, as when a sick man wastes away.

³¹ At that very hour, some Pharisees came to Jesus and told Him, “Leave this place and get away, because Herod wants to kill You.” ³² But Jesus replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘Look, I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach My goal.’ ³³ But I must go on today and tomorrow and the next day, for it is not right for a prophet to die outside Jerusalem.'

¹ And Saul was there, giving approval to Stephen’s death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

²⁴ But I consider my life of no value to myself, if only I may finish my course and complete the ministry I have received from the Lord Jesus—the ministry of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

¹³ Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

¹⁷ But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

³⁰ because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to provide me with what you were not able to.

²⁷ By faith Moses left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw Him who is invisible.

¹¹ They are dogs with mighty appetites. They never have enough! They are shepherds who lack understanding. They all turn to their own way and each one seeks dishonest (unjust) gain.

¹⁴ Then the LORD told me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I didn't send them, I didn't command them, and I didn't speak to them. They're proclaiming to you false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own minds.

¹⁶ This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are saying to you. They fill you with false hope. They speak about visions that they dreamed up. These visions are not from the LORD.

²⁵ "I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in my name. They say: 'I had a dream! I had a dream!"

¹⁵ Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah, the LORD has not sent you, but you have made this people trust in a lie.

⁷ Did you not see a vain vision and speak a lying divination? Yet you say, the LORD declares, though I have not spoken.

¹⁹ You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to kill the souls who should not die, and to save the souls alive who should not live, by your lying to my people who listen to lies."

²² ‘»You have discouraged righteous people with your lies, even though I had not brought them any grief. You encouraged wicked people not to turn from their wicked ways to save their lives.

¹¹ Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on the LORD, and say, “Isn’t the LORD among us? No disaster will come on us.”

³³ I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.

¹⁵ The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment.

¹⁰ to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

³ not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

⁷ As God’s steward, an overseer must be above reproach—not self-absorbed, not quick tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not greedy for money.

² Be shepherds of God's flock that is among you, watching over it, not because you must but because you want to, and not greedily but eagerly, as God desires.

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

¹ Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God: because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

¹³ cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and chariots; and slaves and human souls.

⁶ in which was written: It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says [it, that] thou and the Jews think to rebel, for which cause thou buildest the wall, and according to these words thou wilt become their king.

¹ A good name is more desirable than great riches, and loving favor is better than silver and gold.

⁵ A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

⁷ "Hear me, you who know what is right, you people who have my law in your hearts. Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults.

¹² "I, even I, am the one who comforts you. Who are you that you fear mortal men? The sons of men are like grass! ¹³ And you forget the LORD your Maker, who has stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. And you dread continually, every day, because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy. And where is the fury of the oppressor?

¹¹ “Whom have you dreaded and feared, so that you lie, and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven't I held my peace for a long time, and you don't fear me?

¹⁷ But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them, or I will shatter you before them.

¹⁸ Then they said, “Come! Let's devise plans against Jeremiah; for the law won't perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let's strike him with the tongue, and let's not give heed to any of his words.”

⁶ And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them, and of their words, though briers and thorns are with you, and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words, nor frightened by their faces, though they are a rebellious house.

¹⁷ You, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy against them, ¹⁸ "Tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "How horrible it will be for women who sew magic charms for people's wrists and make magic veils of every size for people's heads. You want to trap people. You want to control the lives of my people for your own profit. ¹⁹ You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, to kill the souls who should not die, and to save the souls alive who should not live, by your lying to my people who listen to lies." ²⁰ "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'I am against the magic charms that you use to trap people like birds. I will tear them from your arms and free the people that you have trapped. ²¹ '"I will tear off your magic veils and rescue my people from your power so that they will no longer be under your control. Then you will know that I am the LORD. ²² ‘»You have discouraged righteous people with your lies, even though I had not brought them any grief. You encouraged wicked people not to turn from their wicked ways to save their lives. ²³ Therefore you shall no more see false visions, nor practice divination. I will deliver my people out of your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.'”

⁴ Then the other administrators and satraps began to seek to find a pretext against Daniel in connection with the kingdom, but they were not able to find any pretext and corruption because he was trustworthy, and no negligence or corruption could be found in him. ⁵ Then these men said, "We will not find any pretext against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God."

²⁸ Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went out and plotted to trap Jesus in His words.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order that they could put him to death.

¹³ They presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the Law.

¹² But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the things they boast about.

¹⁴ So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their homes, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach.

⁷ For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power and love and self-discipline.

⁸ and soundness of speech that can’t be condemned, that he who opposes you may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us.

¹⁷ Therefore, for him who knows the good he ought to do, and does not do it, for him it is sin.

⁸ But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

²² The LORD said to him, 'How?' He said, 'I will go out and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' He said, 'You will entice him, and will also prevail. Go out and do so.' ²³ And now, behold, the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets, and the LORD has spoken evil concerning you. ²⁴ Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came near and slapped Micaiah on the cheek and said, "When did the Spirit of the LORD pass from me to speak with you?"

⁴ “Hear, our God; for we are despised. Turn back their reproach on their own head. Give them up for a plunder in a land of captivity. ⁵ and neither cover their perversity nor wipe away their sin from your face: for they vex you in front of the builders.

¹⁹ "Remember me with favor, my God, for everything I've done for this people."

²⁹ Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

¹ My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning?

¹¹ Don't let the foot of pride come against me; don't let the hand of the wicked drive me away. ¹² There the evil-doers have fallen; they are cast down, and cannot rise.

¹ A Psalm by David, when he was in the desert of Judah. God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.

⁵ The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah. ⁶ I have said to the Lord, You are my God: give ear, O Lord, to the voice of my prayer. ⁷ LORD, my Lord, my strong deliverer, you have protected my head in the time of battle. ⁸ LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked. Do not let their evil plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah. ⁹ Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with their own threats. ¹⁰ Let burning coals fall upon them! Let them be cast into fire, into miry pits, no more to rise. ¹¹ Let not the slanderer become established in the land. May evil quickly hunt down the violent man.

¹⁴ So the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed (rush) in one day. ¹⁵ Elders and dignitaries are the head, and prophets who teach lies are the tail.

²⁰ But, O LORD Almighty who judges rightly, who tries the heart and the mind, let me see Your vengeance on them. For to You I have revealed my cause. ²¹ Therefore, thus said the LORD concerning the men of Anathoth, who are seeking your life, saying:Do not prophesy in the name of the LORD, And you do not die by our hands." ²² therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, "Look, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine; ²³ And a remnant will not be left for them, for I will bring disaster to the people of Anathoth, the year of their punishment."

¹⁵ Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn't send them, yet they say, 'Sword and famine will not be in this land.' Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.

¹⁸ If I go out into the field, I see those slain by the sword! If I go into the city, I see the ravages of the famine! Indeed, both prophet and priest ply their trade in the land, but they don't know anything.'"

²⁰ Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit to take my life. Remember! I stood before you and spoke good on their behalf in order to turn your wrath away from them. ²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widows. Let their men be killed and their young men struck by the sword in battle. ²² Let an outcry be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring raiders upon them. For they have dug a pit to capture me and hidden snares for my feet. ²³ Yet, the LORD, you know all their counsel against me to kill me. Don't forgive their iniquity. Don't blot out their sin from your sight, Let them be overthrown before you. Deal with them in the time of your anger.

¹ And it happened in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, of Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying,

¹⁰ Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it.

¹⁶ the prophets of Israel who prophesy as to Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her. And there is no peace, declares the Sovereign LORD. ¹⁷ You, son of man, set your face against the daughters of your people, who prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy against them,

¹¹ Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people,

²⁴ For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders that would deceive even the elect, if that were possible.

⁸ Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these oppose the truth—men of depraved mind, disqualified as regards the faith—

¹⁴ Alexander, the metal-worker, did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he did. ¹⁵ You also guard against him, because he strongly opposed our words.

¹⁶ If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.

²⁰ But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed signs on his behalf, by which he deceived those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

¹⁵ The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar during the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.

¹ But when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and was very indignant, and mocked the Jews. ² And he spoke before his brothers and the army of Samaria and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burnt?

³ He is like a tree planted by streams of water. It yields its fruit in season and its leaves do not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

²⁵ He made the wheels of their chariots wobble so that they drove them with difficulty. The Egyptians said, "Let's flee from Israel because the LORD is fighting for them and against us."

²³ For there is not a spell against Jacob, nor any divination against Israel. Now it is said of Jacob and Israel, See what God has done!

¹ When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.

⁷ Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem were going forward and the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.

² Then our mouths were filled with laughter, and our tongues formed joyful shouts. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them."

³⁸ So in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin, it will fail.

⁵ And next to them the Tekoites restored; but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their Lord.

⁷ I thought over this in my heart, and then I quarreled with the nobles and the prefects. I said to them, "You yourselves are taking interest from your own brother!" So I called the great assembly against them,

²⁸ One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the chief priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite, so I sent him away from me.

¹ Misery is mine! Indeed, I am like one who gathers the summer fruits, as gleanings of the vineyard: There is no cluster of grapes to eat. My soul desires to eat the early fig. ² The pious has perished from the earth, and the upright is not among mankind. Do not put confidence in a friend. A man's enemies are the men of his own household.

¹⁰ At that time many will fall away and will betray and hate one another, ¹¹ Many false prophets will appear and deceive many people, ¹² Because of the multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.

⁴ Next to them, Meremoth the son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz made repairs. Next to them, Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel made repairs. Next to them, Zadok the son of Baana made repairs.

¹³ He had been hired to make me afraid so I would sin by doing what he suggested. Then they could create a slanderous report to use against me.

⁴ Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive with them.

¹⁰ "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: 'Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you. He says to you: "Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria." ¹¹ »‘You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries. He destroyed them completely. And will you be delivered? ¹² "'Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my forefathers deliver them? And what about the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? ¹³ "'Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?'" ¹⁴ Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. He went to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.

⁷ the world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its deeds are evil.

¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world--that is why the world hates you.

¹⁸ Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. ¹⁹ But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than God. ²⁰ For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” ²¹ So the Council members threatened them further and let them go. They could not find a way to punish them, because all the people were glorifying God for what had happened.

⁵ They are of the world and therefore speak as of the world, and the world listens to them.
