⁴ The roads of Zion mourn without any going to the appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests sigh; her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

⁹ Ye careless women rise up, hear my voice; ye daughters that are secure, give ear unto my speech. ¹⁰ In a year you will tremble, carefree ones, for the vintage will come to an end; the harvest will not come. ¹¹ Tremble you women who are at ease. Be troubled you complacent ones. Undress and put sackcloth on your waist, ¹² Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine. ¹³ On the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city: ¹⁴ For the palace will be forsaken, the crowded city deserted; the hill and the watchtower will become a cave forever, the joy of wild asses, a pasture for flocks.

¹¹ "I'll make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a refuge for jackals. I'll make the towns of Judah desolate, without inhabitants."

²² Listen, news: Look, it is coming, a great roar from the land of the north, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a lair of jackals.

¹¹ All her people groan, they are searching for bread. They give their treasures for food, to bring back life. See, O LORD, and look, how I am despised. ¹² Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, with which the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

¹⁸ The LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Please listen all you people, and see my suffering. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity. ¹⁹ I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders perished in the city, while they searched for food to refresh their souls. ²⁰ See O LORD, that distress is mine; my bowels, they are in turmoil; My heart is overturned within me, for I have rebelled, yea rebelled; Outside the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death."

⁶ He has broken down his dwelling place like the garden; he has ruined his appointed feasts; the LORD has made them forget in Zion festival and Sabbath, and he has despised in his anger king and priest. ⁷ The LORD has rejected his altar, he has disowned his sanctuary, and has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces. ¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches! Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street. ²⁰ ( ψ - [Resh.]) Look, LORD, and take note: To whom you've done this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cuddled? Should priests and prophets be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? ²¹ The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have killed them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered, without pity.

¹³ The young men grind at the mill; the boys stagger under loads of wood.

⁸ Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth! ⁹ The offering and libation are withheld from the house of the LORD. The priests mourn, the ministers of the LORD. ¹⁰ "The field is laid waste, the land mourns. The grain is destroyed, the new wine dried up, the oil fails. ¹¹ Be ashamed, O you farmers; wail, O you vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field has perished. ¹² The vine is dried up, and the fig trees have become few; the pomegranate, and palm tree, and apple, and all the trees of the field have dried up: for the sons of men have abolished joy. ¹³ Gird yourselves, and lament, you priests: wail, you ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God: for the grain offering and the drink offering is withheld from the house of your God.

¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."
