¹ How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down the beauty of Israel from heaven to the earth and has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger. ² The Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob without pity. He has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom and its princes. ³ In fierce anger he has cut off all the horn of Israel. He has drawn back his right hand from before the enemy. And he has burned up Jacob like a flaming fire which devours round about. ⁴ He has bent his bow like an enemy. He has stood with his right hand as an adversary, and has slain all who were pleasant to the eye. He has poured out his wrath like fire in the tent of the daughter of Zion. ⁵ The Lord has become as an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces. He has destroyed his strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Judah. ⁶ He has broken down his dwelling place like the garden; he has ruined his appointed feasts; the LORD has made them forget in Zion festival and Sabbath, and he has despised in his anger king and priest. ⁷ The LORD has rejected his altar, he has disowned his sanctuary, and has given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces. They have made a shout in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn assembly. ⁸ The LORD has determined to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He has stretched out the line, he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying. He has made the rampart and wall to lament; they languish together. ⁹ Her gates are sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the nations: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD. ¹⁰ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and are silent; they send up dust on their heads; they gird on sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground. ¹¹ ( λ - [Kaf.]) My eyes are worn out from crying, my insides are churning, My emotions pour out in grief because my people are destroyed Children and infants faint in the streets of the city. ¹² They tell their mothers, "Where is grain and wine?" When they faint as the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives fade away in their mothers' bosom. ¹³ What can I say for you? What can I compare to you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you so that I can comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your destruction is as vast as the sea; who can heal you? ¹⁴ Your prophets had a vision for you, false and worthless; they have not exposed your sin, to restore your fortune; they have seen oracles for you, false and misleading. ¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem: 'Is this the city that men called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?' ¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it! ¹⁷ the LORD has done what he purposed. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of long-ago. He has thrown down and has not pitied. And he has caused the enemy to rejoice over you. He has exalted the horn of your adversaries. ¹⁸ Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give yourself no relief; let not your eyes rest. ¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches! Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward him for the life of your young children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street. ²⁰ ( ψ - [Resh.]) Look, LORD, and take note: To whom you've done this? Should women eat their offspring, the children they have cuddled? Should priests and prophets be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? ²¹ The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have killed them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered, without pity. ²² You have summoned my horror from all around, as if for a feast day; no one on the day of the LORD's anger is a fugitive and a survivor; whoever I have cared for and reared, my enemy has destroyed.

²¹ And she called the child Ichabod, saying, The glory has departed from Israel, because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

¹⁹ "Your glory, Israel, is slain on your high places. How the mighty have fallen.

² And King David rose to his feet and said, "Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I myself wanted to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the footstool of our God, and I prepared to build.

⁵ Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool. He is holy!

⁷ Let us go to his dwelling place. Let us worship at his footstool.

¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low. ¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit.

¹¹ Our holy and beautiful Temple where our ancestors praised you has been burned to the ground. All that we valued has been ruined.

¹ How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave!

⁴³ You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you killed without sparing. ⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

¹ How the gold has grown dim, the pure gold has changed. The stones of holiness are scattered at the head of every street.

²⁰ '"Once they were proud of their beautiful jewels, but they used them to make disgusting idols. That is why the LORD has made their wealth repulsive to them. ²¹ '"I will hand it all over as plunder to foreigners and as loot to the wicked of the earth, and they will defile it. ²² '"I will turn my face away from them. They will desecrate my treasured place. Robbers will enter it and desecrate it.

²¹ "Say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: "Look! I will be profaning my sanctuary, the pride of your strength and the delight of your eyes and the object of your own affection; and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind will fall by the sword,

¹⁴ »‘»I appointed an angel to guard you. You were on God's holy mountain. You walked among fiery stones. ¹⁵ You were blameless in your ways from the day when you were created, until wickedness was found in you. ¹⁶ By the multitude of your trade, they filled your midst with violence, and you sinned. So I cast you defiled from the height of God, and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from among the stones of fire.

¹⁸ And at Tahpanhes the day will become dark when I break the yoke of Egypt, and in it the majesty of its strength will come to an end. A cloud will cover it, and its daughters will go into captivity.

⁷ "'When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon will not give its light. ⁸ "'All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you. And I will set darkness on your land,' proclaims the Sovereign LORD.

² A day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and thick darkness, like the dawn spreads on the mountains, a great and strong army! There has been nothing like it from old, and after it nothing will be again for generations to come.

²³ And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will descend to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had happened in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

¹⁵ And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will go down to Hades!

¹⁸ He said to them, I saw Satan falling like lightning from heaven.

⁷ And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back, ⁸ But they did not win and so lost their place in heaven. ⁹ And the great dragon was hurled down—the ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

³ the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

⁹ When you appear, you will set them ablaze like a fire furnace. In his wrath, the LORD will consume them, and the fire will devour them.

³⁹ You have renounced the covenant of your servant. You have defiled his crown in the dust. ⁴⁰ You have broken through all his walls; you have laid his fortresses in ruin.

⁹ the LORD Almighty has planned it: to defile the pride of all glory, to humble all the honored ones of the earth.

¹² He will bring down Moab's high-fortified walls, level them, and throw them into the dust on the ground.

⁵ "He humbles those who dwell on high, he lays the lofty (inaccessible) city low; he levels it to the ground and casts it down to the dust.

¹¹ When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For they have no understanding (discernment). Their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.

²⁸ And I will violate the chiefs of My holy place. And I will give Jacob to doom, and Israel to taunts."

⁶ I was angry with my people, I profaned my inheritance, and gave them into your hand: you showed them no mercy; on the aged you have very heavily laid your yoke.

¹⁰ Go up through her vineyards and destroy, but you must not make complete destruction. Remove her branches, for they are not to the LORD.

¹⁴ I'll smash them against each other, even fathers against their sons," declares the LORD. "I'll have no pity, mercy, or compassion when I destroy them."'"

⁷ "'"Afterwards," declares the LORD: "I will hand over Judah's King Zedekiah, his officials, the people, and everyone else in this city who survives the plague, war, and famine. They will be handed over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. Nebuchadnezzar will kill them with swords. He will not spare them, show them compassion, or care for them."'

⁵ The Lord has become as an enemy. He has swallowed up Israel. He has swallowed up all her palaces. He has destroyed his strongholds. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation in the daughter of Judah.

¹⁷ the LORD has done what he purposed. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of long-ago. He has thrown down and has not pitied. And he has caused the enemy to rejoice over you. He has exalted the horn of your adversaries.

²¹ The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have killed them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered, without pity.

⁴³ You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you killed without sparing.

¹¹ '"As I live, declares the Sovereign LORD,' 'because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable idols and with all your abominations I will withdraw, and my eye will have no pity and I will not spare you.

⁴ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you. I will repay you for your conduct and the detestable practices among you. THEN YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM the LORD.'

⁹ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you (my eye will not feel sorry for you). I will repay you in accordance with your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow.

¹⁸ Therefore will I also deal with them in anger; My eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity; and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, yet will I not hear them.

¹⁰ And I also, Mine eye does not pity, nor do I spare; their way on their own head I have put.'"

¹¹ I will cut off the cities of your land, and will tear down all your strongholds. ¹² I will render your witchcraft powerless, and mediums will no longer exist among you.

⁵ Their buyers slaughter them, and go unpunished. Those who sell them say, 'Blessed be the LORD, for I am rich;' and their own shepherds do not pity them. ⁶ For I will have no more pity for the people of the land, says the Lord; but I will give up everyone into his neighbour's hand and into the hand of his king: and they will make the land waste, and I will not keep them safe from their hands.

⁴ Even though Edom may claim, 'We were crushed, but we will return and rebuild the ruins,' this is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "They may rebuild, but I'll demolish. People will call them 'The Wicked Land,' and 'The People With Whom the LORD is Forever Angry.'

³³ Should you not have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?’

⁴ The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

²² For a fire has been kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest Sheol, and consumes the earth and its produce; and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.

¹¹ Why do you draw back your hand, even your right hand? Take it out of your pocket and consume them.

⁵ Do not lift up your horn on high; do not speak with a stiff neck.

¹⁰ I will cut off all the horns of the wicked, but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

⁵ How long, O LORD, wilt Thou be angry for ever? How long will Thy jealousy burn like fire?

²⁴ My faithfulness and gracious love will be with him, and in my name his power will be exalted.

⁴⁶ How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever? Shall your wrath burn like fire?

¹⁷ There I will cause a horn to grow for David; I will set a lamp for my anointed one.

³¹ The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them.”

²⁵ So he poured the wrath of his anger upon him and the strength of war. And it set him afire all around, but he did not understand; and it burned him, but he did not take it to heart.

⁴ Circumcise yourselves to the LORD and remove the foreskin of your heart, you men of Judah and residents of Jerusalem, or else my wrath will break out like fire and burn with no one to put it out, because of your evil deeds."

²⁰ Therefore the Sovereign LORD says: "My anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast, on the trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground. It will burn and not be quenched."

⁴ 'This is what the LORD God of Israel says: "I'm about to turn against you the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. I'll gather them into the center of this city. ⁵ And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, and in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.

¹⁴ But I'll punish you according to what you have done," declares the LORD. "I'll start a fire in her forest, and it will consume everything around her."'"

²⁵ The horn of Moab is cut off and his arm is broken," declares the LORD.

¹ "For look! The day is about to come, burning like an oven, and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The coming day will consume them," says the LORD of hosts. "It will not leave behind for them root or branch.

⁶⁹ He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David,

¹⁷ whose winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

²¹ Go inquire of the LORD for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found. Great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do according to all that is written in this book.

²⁵ because they have abandoned me and burned incense to other gods so as to provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands. And my wrath will be poured out on this place and it will not be quenched.'

⁴ "The Almighty's arrows are in me. My spirit drinks in their poison. God's terrors set themselves against me.

¹² »I was at ease, but he shattered me. He has grabbed me by the neck and has shaken me to pieces. He has also set me up as his target. ¹³ "His arrows surround me. Without mercy he splits my kidneys open. He pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me breach upon breach; he rushes at me like a warrior.

¹⁷ Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the LORD the cup of his wrath, you who have drained to its dregs the goblet that makes men stagger. ¹⁸ Of all the sons she bore there was none to guide her; of all the sons she reared there was none to take her by the hand. ¹⁹ These double calamities have come upon you. Who can comfort you? You experience ruin and destruction, famine and sword. Who can console you? ²⁰ Your sons have fainted. They lie at the head of every street. They are like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the rage of the LORD and the rebuke of your God.

⁶ "In my wrath I trampled on people. In my rage I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground."

¹⁰ But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. Therefore he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.

⁵ And I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, and in anger, and in fury, and in great wrath.

¹² O house of David! Thus, saith the LORD, Administer justice betimes, And deliver the robbed out of the hand of the oppressor,—Lest mine indignation come forth like fire And burn and there be none to quench it, Because of the wickedness of your doings:

¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you, they do not care for you. I have struck you with the blow of an enemy, the punishment of the cruel, because of the greatness of your guilt, your sins are numerous.

⁷ Perhaps their plea will fall before the LORD and each one will turn away from his evil way, for great is the anger and wrath that the LORD pronounced against this people."

³ Surely he turns his hand against me again and again all day long.

¹² With his bow bent, he made me the target for his arrows. ¹³ He poured into my reins the darts of his quiver.

¹³ '"I will unleash my anger. I will use my fury against you, and I will get revenge. When my fury is unleashed against you, you will know that I, the LORD, spoke to you with all my zeal.

¹² He that is far off shall die of the pestilence; and he that is near shall fall by the sword; and he that remaineth and is besieged shall die by the famine; thus will I spend My fury upon them.

²² '"As silver is melted in the furnace, you will be melted in the midst of her. You will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my wrath on you."'

²⁵ Also, thou son of man, in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and the care of their souls, their sons and their daughters,

¹⁸ And I poured out my fury upon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols.

² The LORD is a jealous God and avenges. The LORD avenges and is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies.

⁶ His indignation—who can stand before it? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; rocks are shattered before him.

⁹ set fire to the LORD's temple, the royal palace, and all the houses of Jerusalem. He even set fire to the lavish homes.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. ¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand.

¹⁷ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "Consider closely, and call for the wailing women, so that they come, and for the skillful women, so that they come. ¹⁸ And let them make haste and take up a lament over us, so that our eyes may run down with tears, and waters flow from our eyelids. ¹⁹ For a sound of mourning is heard from Zion: 'How we're ruined! Our shame is very great, because we have left the land, because our houses are torn down.'" ²⁰ For hear, O women, the word of the LORD, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters a lamentation, and each woman her neighbor a lament.

¹ Then the LORD said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me, my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my sight, and let them go out.

¹³ He burned down the LORD’s Temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down.

¹⁰ and He spreads it before me, and it is written in front and behind, and written on it [are] lamentations, and mourning, and woe!"

¹² Why did you break down its walls so that those who pass by pluck its fruits?

⁴⁰ You have broken through all his walls; you have laid his fortresses in ruin.

⁸ The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a besieged city.

¹³ Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can't bear with evil assemblies.

⁵ Now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away its hedge, and it will be eaten up. I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled down.

¹⁸ For a little while Your holy people possessed it. Our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary.

¹¹ And he put out Zedekiah's eyes; and the king of Babylon, chaining him in iron bands, took him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death. ¹² Now the tenth day of the fifth Month, in the nineteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the chief captain and the king of Babylon's servants came unto Jerusalem, ¹³ He burned down the LORD’s Temple, the royal palace, and all the houses in Jerusalem. Every important building was burned down. ¹⁴ The entire Babylonian army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the walls around Jerusalem. ¹⁵ Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard carried into exile some of the poorest of the people, the rest of the people left in the city, the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the craftsmen. ¹⁶ Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left some of the poorest people in the land to work in the vineyards and on the farms. ¹⁷ The Chaldeans broke in pieces the bronze pillars that were in the LORD's temple and the stands and the bronze sea that were in the LORD's temple, and they carried all the bronze to Babylon. ¹⁸ they took the pots, shovels, snuffers, bowls, dishes, and all the copper utensils used in the Temple service. ¹⁹ The captain of the bodyguard took away the bowls, the fire pans, the basins, the pots, the lamp stands, the pans, and the bowls for libations, both those made of gold and those made of silver. ²⁰ The copper from the two pillars, the pool, and the twelve copper bulls under the stands that King Solomon had made for the LORD’s Temple could not be weighed. ²¹ One pillar was twenty-seven feet high and eighteen feet in circumference. It was three inches thick and hollow. ²² And there was a crown of brass on it: the crown was five cubits high, circled with a network and apples all of brass; and the second pillar had the same. ²³ There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides. The total number of pomegranates on the surrounding filigree was one hundred. ²⁴ And the captain of the guard took Serayah the chief priest, and Zephanyah the priest second in rank, and the three door-keepers; ²⁵ From the city he also took an army commander, seven men who had access to the king whom he found in the city, the scribe who was in charge of the militia, and sixty common people whom he found in the city. ²⁶ Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, brought them to the king of Babylon at Riblah. ²⁷ And the king of Babylon put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was taken prisoner away from his land.

⁴ The roads of Zion mourn without any going to the appointed feasts. All her gates are deserted; her priests sigh; her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

¹⁶ The LORD himself has scattered them; he will no more regard them. They did not respect the priests, they did not favor the elders.

²⁰ The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Yahweh, was taken in their pits; of whom we said, under his shadow we will live among the nations.

¹² Princes were hung by their hands; elders were shown no respect.

¹² '"The prince who is among you will put his bags on his shoulders in the dark and leave. People will dig holes in the wall to go through. The prince will cover his face so that he cannot see the land.'" ¹³ And I will spread out my net on him, and he will be captured in my hunting snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die.

¹⁸ Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, see, he had given his hand, and has done all these things, he shall not escape.

¹⁸ I will remove those who grieve about the appointed feasts from you. They are a burden and a reproach to you.

⁹ And I have made you despised and cast out among all the people, because you have not kept My ways, but have been partial in the law.

³¹ I will lay your cities waste, and will bring your sanctuaries to desolation. I will not take delight in the sweet fragrance of your offerings.

⁴⁴ And in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am the LORD their God.

¹⁹ They burned God's house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all of its valuable vessels.

⁴ May he defend the afflicted of the people and deliver the children of the poor, but crush the oppressor. ⁵ and continue, as long as the sun and moon, through all generations. ⁶ May he descend like rain on mown grass, like showers watering the earth. ⁷ In His days the righteous shall flourish, and plenty of peace, till the moon is not. ⁸ He shall also rule from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. ⁹ The dwellers in the desert shall bow before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust. ¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and of the isles will bring tribute (presents). The kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts. ¹¹ Yes, all kings will bow down before him. All nations will serve him. ¹² For he will deliver the needy who crieth, and the afflicted, who hath no helper; ¹³ He will have pity on the poor and needy, he will save the needy persons. ¹⁴ He will redeem their soul from oppression and violence; And precious will their blood be in his sight: ¹⁵ And he shall live, and the gold of Sheba shall be given to him. Men shall pray for him continually. He shall bless him all day long. ¹⁶ Abundance of grain shall be throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon. Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field. ¹⁷ His name endures forever, his name continues as long as the sun. ³ Lift your steps to the perpetual ruins, to all that the enemy has ruined in the sanctuary. ⁴ Your enemies roar in the midst of your congregations; they set up their banners for signs. ⁵ They behaved like men wielding axes, cutting through a thicket of trees. ⁶ They strike down all its carved work with hatchet and hammers. ⁷ They have burned your sanctuary to the ground. They have profaned the dwelling place of your Name. ⁸ They said in their hearts: "We will destroy them completely. They burned up all the synagogues of God in the land."

⁵⁹ God heard and he was very angry and rejected Israel utterly. ⁶⁰ And He leaveth the tabernacle of Shiloh, The tent He had placed among men, ⁶¹ And he gave his strength into captivity and his splendor into the hand of the enemy.

¹⁰ Thy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. ¹¹ Our holy and beautiful Temple where our ancestors praised you has been burned to the ground. All that we valued has been ruined.

¹² "But go to my place in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell from the beginning, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. ¹³ Now, because you have done all these things," declares the LORD, "I spoke to you over and over again, but you didn't listen. I called to you, but you didn't answer. ¹⁴ Just as I did to Shiloh, I'll do to the house in which you trust and which is called by my name, the place that I gave to you and your ancestors.

⁶ then I will make this house like Shiloh, and this city I will make a curse for all the nations of the earth.'" '"

¹⁸ Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus hath the LORD of the hosts said; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the temple mount as the high places of a forest.

²⁹ 'The Babylonians who are attacking this city will break in, set this city on fire, and burn it down. They will burn down the houses of people who made me furious by going up to the roofs to burn incense to Baal and to pour out wine offerings to other gods.'

³ Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and inscrutable things which you do not know. ⁴ For this is what the LORD God of Israel says about the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah that were torn down to defend against the siege ramps and the sword, ⁵ "The people of Israel fought the Babylonians. Now their houses are filled with the bodies of their own people I killed in my anger and my fury. I will hide my face from this city because of its wickedness.

⁸ The Babylonians burned down the royal palace and the houses of the people and tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

¹ How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down the beauty of Israel from heaven to the earth and has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

²⁴ '"I will bring the wicked of the nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated.

⁵ "I will send fire upon Judah and it will devour the fortified buildings of Jerusalem."

¹² Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed up like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the temple Mount like a forest high place."

² “Do you see all these things?” He replied. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be toppled.”

¹³ They presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the Law. ¹⁴ For we have heard him say that this Jesus from Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us."

² He struck Moab, and measured them with the line, making them to lie down on the ground; and he measured two lines to put to death, and one full line to keep alive. The Moabites became servants to David, and brought tribute.

¹³ I'll stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line that is Samaria and the plumb line that is Ahab's dynasty. Then I'll wipe Jerusalem like one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down!

²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me, and stop frightening me with your terrors.

²⁶ and her gates shall lament and mourn; and, stripped, she shall sit upon the ground.

¹⁷ I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place.

² "Judah mourns, and her gates languish. The people mourn for the land, and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.

⁷ They put the sons of Zedekiah to death before his eyes. Then they put out his eyes, chained him with iron bands and took him to Babylon.

³ Now for a long time Israel was without the true God, without a teaching priest, and without law.

³ They replied to me, "The survivors in the province who have survived the captivity are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned in the fire."

⁹ We see no miraculous signs. There is no longer any prophet. There is no one who knows how long.

¹⁴ Then the LORD told me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I didn't send them, I didn't command them, and I didn't speak to them. They're proclaiming to you false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own minds.

² On the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah's eleventh year as king, the city walls were broken through.

³⁰ The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting. They stay in their strongholds; their strength is dried up; they have become like women. Her buildings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken.

⁸ The Babylonian army pursued King Zedekiah and caught up with him in the plain of Jericho. His entire army had deserted him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and he passed sentence on him.

¹⁴ The entire Babylonian army that was with the captain of the guard tore down the walls around Jerusalem.

³ Judah has gone into exile because of affliction and harsh servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest: all her persecutors overtook her in the midst of her distress.

The days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine throughout the land not a famine of food or a thirst for water but rather a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. ¹² People will stagger from sea to sea, from north to east. They will run back and forth, searching for the word of the LORD, but they won't find it.

⁶ Therefore it will be as night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without divination. And the sun will set on the prophets, and the day will grow dark over them. ⁷ And the seers shall be ashamed, and the diviners ashamed; yea, they shall all cover their mustache, for there is no answer from God.

⁶ And Joshua tore his clothing, and fell on his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they threw dust on their heads.

¹⁹ Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore the long-sleeved robe which was on her. She put her hand on her head, and she went away, crying out as she went.

¹² And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and everyone tore his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads, ¹³ Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. ³ In its streets they are girded with sack-cloth, on its roofs, and in its public places every one shall wail, groan with weeping.

¹ "Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.

⁵ "Sit in silence, and go into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms.

¹⁴ Why are we sitting here? Join together! Let's go to the fortified cities and perish there! For the LORD our God has condemned us to perish and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against him.

³ At that time," declares the Lord GOD, "the temple songs will be wailing. Many bodies will accumulate everywhere.

¹³ In that day the beautiful young women and the young men will faint because of thirst.

¹⁹ Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed.”

⁴ Then David and his men wept aloud until they had no more power to weep.

¹³ "His arrows surround me. Without mercy he splits my kidneys open. He pours out my gall on the ground.

⁷ My eyes grow weak with sorrow. I am weak because of all my foes.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted within me.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in distress. My eye wastes away with grief, [yea], my soul and my body.

³ I am weary with my crying. My throat is dry. My eyes fail looking for my God.

⁴ I said: "Turn away from me. Let me weep bitterly. Do not try to console me over the destruction of my people."

¹⁴ "I cry like a swallow (swift). I mourn like a dove. My eyes are red from looking to you, the LORD. I am terribly abused. Please come and help me.

¹⁹ "My anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the aching of my heart! My heart pounds within me; I cannot keep silent. For I hear the sound of the trumpet, the alarm for war.

¹⁹ Listen, my people's cry from a distant land. 'Is the LORD no longer in Zion? Is her king no longer there? Why did they provoke me to anger with their images, with their worthless foreign gods?"

¹⁷ You, say this word to them; My eyes drip with tears night and day and they cease not: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breaking - with a mighty stroking stroke.

³ Even the jackals offer their breast. They nurse their young ones. But the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. ⁴ The nursing infant's tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth for thirst. The young children ask for bread, but no one gives to them.

⁹ Those killed by the sword are better off than those who died of starvation. For these die slowly and waste away from lack of food from the field. ¹⁰ ( ι - [Yod.]) With their own hands, compassionate women boil their own children they become their food when my beloved people were destroyed.

²⁹ Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed.’

¹² Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great and he will divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors. Yet he bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

² You have made the land tremble. You have torn it. Mend its fractures, for it quakes.

²² this is the word the LORD spoke against him: "The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then was there no medicine for the daughter of my people?

¹² This is what the LORD says: "Your wound is incurable. Your injury is beyond healing. ¹³ There is no one to plead your cause. There is no medicine for your sore, no healing for you. ¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you, they do not care for you. I have struck you with the blow of an enemy, the punishment of the cruel, because of the greatness of your guilt, your sins are numerous. ¹⁵ Why do you cry out over your crushing? ¹² Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, with which the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

³ "Therefore the Sovereign LORD says: 'I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves. ⁴ "'They will destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers. I will scrape her debris from her and make her a bare rock.

¹ “Cry aloud! Don’t spare! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

³¹ "The prophets prophesy falsely, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?

¹³ For from the least of them even to the greatest, all are given to covetousness: and from the prophet even to the priest, all are guilty of deceit. ¹⁴ They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

¹⁰ Therefore I will give their wives to others, their fields to conquerors, because from the smallest to the greatest, all of them make profit for unlawful gain, from prophet to priest, all of them practice deceit. ¹¹ They have treated my people's wound superficially, telling them, 'Peace, peace, when there is no peace.'

¹³ I said: "Alas, O Sovereign LORD, prophets are telling them: 'You will not see wars or famines, for I will give you lasting peace in this place." ¹⁴ Then the LORD told me, "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I didn't send them, I didn't command them, and I didn't speak to them. They're proclaiming to you false visions, worthless predictions, and the delusions of their own minds. ¹⁵ Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn't send them, yet they say, 'Sword and famine will not be in this land.' Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.

¹¹ "For both prophet as well as priest are godless, even in my temple I have found their wickedness," declares the LORD. ¹² Therefore their way will be slippery. They'll be driven out into the darkness, where they'll fall. For I'll bring disaster on them, the year of their judgment," declares the LORD. ¹³ "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw a disgusting thing, for they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. ¹⁴ In the prophets of Jerusalem I have also seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies. They fill you with false hope. They speak about visions that they dreamed up. These visions are not from the LORD. ¹⁷ They say continually to those who despise me, the LORD has said, You will have peace. And to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, No evil will come upon you.

²² But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have caused them to turn from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.

²⁵ "I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy falsely in my name. They say: 'I had a dream! I had a dream!" ²⁶ How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies, and that prophesy the delusions of their own heart? ²⁷ "They think the dreams they tell will make my people forget my name, just as their ancestors forgot my name and turned to Baal worship. ²⁸ Let the prophet who has a dream relate the dream, but let whoever receives my word speak my word truthfully. ³¹ the LORD says, Behold, I am against the prophets who use their tongues and say, He says. ³² Look, I'm against those who prophesy based on false dreams," declares the LORD, "and relate them and lead my people astray with their lies and their recklessness. ⁹ "Do not listen to prophets, mediums, and interpreters of dreams, fortunetellers, or sorcerers who tell you, 'You will never serve the king of Babylon.' ¹⁰ "They prophesy lies to you. They will cause you to be taken far from your lands. I will scatter you, and you will die.

¹⁴ Don't listen to the words of the prophets who say to you, 'You won't serve the king of Babylon. Indeed, they're prophesying a lie to you. ¹⁵ For I have not sent them," declares the LORD, "but they are prophesying in my name falsely, so that I will drive them away. ¹⁹ "Where are the prophets who told you that the king of Babylon would not attack you and this land?

² "Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesy, and say to those who prophesy out of their own heart, 'Hear the word of the LORD: ³ The Sovereign LORD says, “Woe to the foolish prophets, who follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing! ⁴ Your prophets have been like foxes among ruins. ⁵ You have not gone up into the breaks, nor built the wall for the house of Israel, that it might stand in the battle in the day of the LORD. ⁶ They have seen vanity and lying divination, that say: The LORD saith; and the LORD hath not sent them, yet they hope that the word would be confirmed! ⁷ Did you not see a vain vision and speak a lying divination? Yet you say, the LORD declares, though I have not spoken. ⁸ '"Therefore, the Sovereign LORD says: '"Because you have spoken falsehood and seen a lie, therefore behold, I am against you,' declares the Sovereign LORD." ⁹ “My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who utter lying divinations. They will not be in the council of my people, neither will they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither will they enter into the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign LORD.” ¹⁰ Because, yes, because they led my people astray, saying 'Peace!' And there is not peace. And when anyone builds a flimsy wall, look, they coat it with whitewash. ¹¹ »So tell those who plaster it over with whitewash, that it will fall. A flooding rain will come, and you, O hailstones, will fall; and a violent wind will break out. ¹² And when the wall has come down, will they not say to you, Where is the whitewash which you put on it? ¹³ "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'In my fury I will cause a storm to break out. In my anger rain will pour down, and hailstones will destroy the wall. ¹⁴ '"I will tear down the wall that the prophets covered up with whitewash. I will level it and expose its foundation. When the wall falls, they will be destroyed by it. Then you will know that I am the LORD.' ¹⁵ ‘»I will unleash my rage on the wall and on those who covered it up with paint. Then I will say to you: The wall is gone, and so are those who painted it. ¹⁶ the prophets of Israel who prophesy as to Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her. And there is no peace, declares the Sovereign LORD.

²² ‘»You have discouraged righteous people with your lies, even though I had not brought them any grief. You encouraged wicked people not to turn from their wicked ways to save their lives.

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets within it, like a roaring lion ravening the prey. They have devoured souls. They take treasure and precious things. They have made many widows within it.

²⁸ '"Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them. They see false visions and divine lies for them. They say: "This is what the Sovereign LORD says, when the LORD has not spoken."

¹¹ If a man walking in a spirit of falsehood lies: "I will prophesy to you of wine and of strong drink;" he would be the prophet of this people.

⁵ Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray; for those who feed their teeth, they proclaim, "Peace." and whoever doesn't provide for their mouths, they prepare war against him:

⁴ Her prophets are vain-glorious, treacherous persons; her priests profane the sanctuary, they do violence to the law.

¹ Now there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies that even deny the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. ² Many will follow their immoral ways, and as a result, the way of the truth will be maligned. ³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

²² »The next generation of your children and foreigners who come from distant countries will see the plagues that have happened in this land and the diseases the LORD sent here. ²³ [that] the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which LORD overthrew in his anger, and i ²⁴ "All the nations will say: Why has the LORD done thus to this land? Why this great outburst of anger?' ²⁵ Then they will answer themselves, 'Because they've abandoned the covenant of their LORD, the God of their ancestors that he had made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods whom they did not know them and he had not allotted to them. ²⁷ Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book. ²⁸ Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as it is today.”

⁷ then I will cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and I will cast this house, which I have made holy for my name, out of my sight; and Israel will be a proverb and a byword among all peoples. ⁸ Though this house is so high, yet everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss; and they will say, 'Why has the LORD done this to this land, and to this house?' ⁹ and they shall answer, 'Because they forsook the LORD their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold of other gods, and worshiped them, and served them. Therefore the LORD has brought all this disaster on them.'"

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

²¹ And as for this house, which was exalted, all who pass by it will be appalled and will say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?'

²² "It hurls itself against him without mercy as he flees headlong from its power. ²³ It claps its hands over him, and it hisses at him from its place.

⁷ All who see me deride me; they bust out the lip, they shake the head,

¹⁴ You made our defeat a proverb among the nations so that people shake their heads at us. ¹⁵ My shame is always before me, and the shame of my face has covered me:

² Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the north sides, the city of the great King.

² From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.

¹⁶ They make their land into a desolate place, an object of lasting scorn. All who pass by will be appalled and will shake their heads.

⁸ I'll make this city into a desolate place and an object of scorn. All who pass by it will be astonished and will scoff because of all its wounds.

⁹ I'm now sending for all the tribes from the north, declares the LORD, and for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I'll bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I'll utterly destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting desolation.

¹⁸ Jerusalem, the cities of Judah, its kings and officials to make them into a ruin, an object of horror and scorn, and a curse, as it is this day;

¹⁸ And I will pursue them with the sword, with the famine, and with the plague, and will make them a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and a waste, and a hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations where I have driven them,

³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.

⁸ Jerusalem has grievously sinned. Therefore she has become unclean. All who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness. Yes, she sighs, and turns backward.

⁶ He has broken down his dwelling place like the garden; he has ruined his appointed feasts; the LORD has made them forget in Zion festival and Sabbath, and he has despised in his anger king and priest.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it!

⁶ For thus says the Sovereign LORD: Because you have clapped your hands and stamped with the feet and rejoiced with all the spite of your soul against the land of Israel,

¹⁶ For you have observed the regulations of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab. And you have walked in their counsels, so that I am making you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of scorn. So you will bear the scorn of my people.

¹⁹ There is no healing your wound, for your injury is fatal. All who hear the report of you clap their hands over you; for who hasn’t felt your endless cruelty?

¹⁵ This is the city of rejoicing that lived securely; the one saying in her heart, "I am, and there is none besides me." How she has become a desolation, a lair for wild animals! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.

³⁹ And those who passed by hurled insults at him, wagging their heads

²⁹ Those who passed by heaped abuse on Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

⁹ When in his wrath he threw me down and gnashed his teeth at me; the darts of his executioners fell upon me. ¹⁰ People gaped at me with mouths wide open; they slap me in their scorn and gather together against me.

¹³ they gape on me with their mouths as a tearing and a roaring lion.

¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed their teeth at me.

²¹ They open their mouths against me and say: Aha! Aha! Our own eyes have seen it.

¹² The wicked plotteth against the righteous, and gnasheth his teeth against him.

⁸ An evil disease, they say, has afflicted him. Now that he lies he shall rise up no more.

² My enemies trample all day, because many are attacking me proudly.

³ He will send from heaven and save me; he will reproach the one who tramples me. Selah God will send his loyal love and his faithfulness.

² Wicked and deceitful people have opened their mouths against me. They speak against me with lying tongues.

¹⁰ The wicked shall see it, and be vexed; he will gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the longing of the wicked shall perish.

³ then they had swallowed us alive when they kindled their wrath against us:

¹⁹ "Even if you are destroyed and demolished, and your land is in ruins, you will be too crowed for your people. Those who devoured you will be long gone.

⁷ All those who found them have devoured them. And their foes have said, 'We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the LORD, the true pasture, even the LORD, the hope of their ancestors.'

¹⁷ "The people of Israel are like scattered sheep that lions have chased. The first to devour them was the king of Assyria. The last to gnaw at their bones was King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out.

⁴⁶ All our enemies have opened their mouth wide against us.

³ "Tell the Ammonites: 'Hear the word of the Sovereign LORD! The Sovereign LORD says: "Because you said, Aha! Against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was made desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into exile,

¹⁵ So says the Sovereign LORD: Because the Philistines have acted in vengeance and have taken vengeance with spite in their soul, to destroy with perpetual enmity.

³ therefore prophesy and say, Thus says the Sovereign LORD. Because, even because they have made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and you became the talk and evil gossip of the nations;

⁸ Israel is swallowed up. Now they are among the nations like a worthless thing.

¹² But do not look down on your brother in the day of his disaster, and do not rejoice over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction. Do not speak proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ Do not enter into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity. Do not look down on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither seize their wealth on the day of their calamity. ¹⁴ nor stand in the crossway to cut off his escapees; nor shut up his survivors in the day of tribulation. ¹⁵ For the day of the LORD is near all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return upon your own head. ¹⁶ For just as you have drunk on my holy mountain, all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and they will slurp, and they will be as if they had never been.

⁸ I have heard the reproaches of Moab and the scorning of the Ammonites, with which they have taunted my nation and made boasts against their territory. ⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them." ¹⁰ This shall be for them in place of their pride because they mocked and boasted against the people of the LORD of hosts.

⁵⁴ When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.

¹⁴ And if you will not listen to Me, and do not do all these commands; ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self abhors my regulations, to not carry out all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I in turn will do this to you: then I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed in vain, and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you. ¹⁸ "'If you still will not listen to me, I will discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze. ²⁰ and your strength will be spent in vain, for your land will not yield its increase, nor will the trees of the land yield their fruit. ²¹ If you walk contrary to me, and will not hearken to me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you for your sins. ²² "'I will send wild animals among you. They will rob you of your children. They will destroy your cattle, and make you so few that your roads will be deserted. ²³ And if over these things you should not be corrected, but should go to me sideways, ²⁴ I also will walk contrary to you, and will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ I will bring the sword on you avenging the vengeance of the covenant. When you will be gathered into your cities then I will send the plague into your midst, and you will be given into the hand of the enemy. ²⁶ When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven and they will deliver your bread again by weight and you will eat and not be satisfied. ²⁷ "'If in spite of this you do not listen to me and still resist me, ²⁸ then I will go against you in hostile anger, and also I myself will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ so that ye shall eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. ³⁰ I will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and cast your dead bodies upon the bodies of your idols; and my soul will abhor you. ³¹ I will lay your cities waste, and will bring your sanctuaries to desolation. I will not take delight in the sweet fragrance of your offerings. ³² And I myself will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. ³³ I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you. Your land will be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste. ³⁴ Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate and you are in your enemies' land. Even then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. ³⁵ As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, even the rest which it did not have in your sabbaths, when you lived on it. ³⁶ "'As for those of you who are left, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies: and the sound of a driven leaf will put them to flight; and they shall flee, as one flees from the sword; and they will fall when no one pursues. ³⁷ They will stumble over one another, as it were before the sword, when no one pursues: and you will have no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ You will perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies will devour you. ³⁹ "'Those who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors. ⁴⁰ "'However if they confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors and the treacherous things they did to oppose me, ⁴¹ I also will walk contrary to them and will bring them into the land of their enemies. If then their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they then pay for their iniquity, ⁴² then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land. ⁴³ The land also will be left by them, and will enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them; and they will accept the punishment of their iniquity because they rejected my ordinances, and their soul abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am the LORD their God. ⁴⁵ but for their sakes I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD. ⁴⁶ These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that the LORD gave between himself and the Israelites on Mount Sinai through Moses.

¹⁵ "But if you don't obey the LORD your God and faithfully carry out all his commands and statutes that I'm giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you and overwhelm you. ¹⁶ You shall be cursed in the city, and cursed in the field. ¹⁷ Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. ²⁰ the LORD will send on you cursing, confusion and rebuke in all that you put your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Him. ²¹ The LORD will cause you to be ill with long-lasting diseases until you are wiped out from the land that you are entering to possess. ²² the LORD shall smite you with attenuation, with fever and inflammation, with hot heat and drought, with blasting and mildew, and they will pursue you until you perish. ²³ The sky above your head will become bronze while the ground beneath you will become iron. ²⁴ the LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust. It will come down on you from the sky, until you are destroyed. ²⁵ "the LORD will cause you to be stricken before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and flee seven ways from them. You will be an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ Your bodies will be meat for all the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth; there will be no one to send them away. ²⁷ the LORD will strike you with the boil of Egypt and with the tumours, the scurvy and the itch, from which you cannot be healed. ²⁸ The LORD shall strike you with madness, and blindness, and confusion of mind: ²⁹ and you will grope at noonday, as the blind man gropes in darkness. And you will not prosper in your ways. And you will only be oppressed and robbed always and there will be none to save you. ³⁰ You'll be engaged to a woman, but another man will rape her. You'll build a house but you won't live in it. You'll plant a vineyard but you won't harvest it. ³¹ Your ox will be slain before your eyes and you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be violently taken away from before your face and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies and you will have none to save you. ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on longingly for them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything. ³³ A people whom you don't know will devour what your land and labor produces. You'll be only oppressed and discouraged continually ³⁴ so that the sights that you see with your eyes will drive you mad. ³⁵ The LORD shall strike you in the knees, and in the legs, with painful boils that cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot unto the top of your head. ³⁶ "the LORD will bring you and your king, whom you set over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods made of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a wonder and a name of shame among all the nations where the Lord will take you. ³⁸ You shall carry much seed out to the field, and you shall gather in little; for the locusts will devour it. ³⁹ You will plant vineyards and dress them, but you will neither drink of the wine, nor harvest, because worms will eat them. ⁴⁰ You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you won't anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. ⁴¹ You will beget sons and daughters, but they will not be your, for they will go into captivity. ⁴² »Locusts will take over all your trees and the fruit of your land. ⁴³ The foreigner who is among you will mount up above you higher and higher, and you will come down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He will lend to you and you will not lend to him. He will be the head and you will be the tail. ⁴⁵ All these curses will come on you, and will pursue you and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you didn't listen to the LORD your God's voice, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded you. ⁴⁶ They will be for a sign and for a wonder to you and to your offspring forever. ⁴⁷ "Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly, despite the abundance of everything you have, ⁴⁸ therefore you will serve your enemies whom Yahweh sends against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in lack of all things. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. ⁴⁹ "the LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand, ⁵⁰ A hard-faced nation, who will have no respect for the old or mercy for the young: ⁵¹ And it shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed, and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds, and lambs of your flock until it has destroyed you. ⁵² "They will blockade all your cities until the high, fortified walls you trust come down everywhere in your land. They will blockade all the cities everywhere in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. ⁵³ "Because of the hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade, you will eat the flesh of your own children, the sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you. ⁵⁴ "The kindest and most sensitive man among you will become stingy toward his brother, the wife he loves, and the children he still has left. ⁵⁵ »He will give none of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all that he has left. These are hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade of all your cities. ⁵⁶ "The kindest and most sensitive woman among you, so sensitive and tender that she would not even step on an ant, will become stingy toward the husband she loves or toward her own son or daughter. ⁵⁷ She will eat her afterbirth and her newborn children secretly since there will be nothing left on account of the siege and distress with which your enemy will oppress you in your cities." ⁵⁸ If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, the LORD your God, ⁵⁹ then he will inflict extraordinary plagues on you and your children, great and lasting plagues, and severe and lasting illnesses. ⁶⁰ "He will bring all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded. They will cling to you. ⁶¹ "the LORD will also bring you every kind of sickness and plague not written in this Book of the Law. They will continue until you are dead. ⁶² "You were at one time as numerous as the stars in the sky. But only a few of you will be left. This is because you did not obey the LORD your God. ⁶³ Just as the LORD delighted to prosper and increase you, so now the LORD will delight to destroy, exterminate, and banish you from the land that you are about to enter to possess." ⁶⁴ "He'll scatter you among the peoples from one end of the earth to the other, and there you'll serve other gods made of wood and stones, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. ⁶⁵ Among those nations you'll have no rest. There'll be no resting place for the soles of your feet. Instead, the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a despairing spirit. ⁶⁶ You'll cling to life, being fearful by both night and day, with no assurance of survival. ⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, If only it was evening! And at evening you will say, If only morning would come! Because of the fear in your hearts and the things which your eyes will see. ⁶⁸ Finally, the LORD will bring you back to Egypt by ship, a place that I said you'll never see again. There you'll try to sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you."

¹⁸ Be alert so there is no man, woman, family, or a tribe whose heart is turning away from the LORD your God to go and serve the gods of those nations. "Be alert so there will be no root among you that produces poisonous and bitter fruit, ¹⁹ because when such a person hears the words of this oath, he will bless himself and say: 'I will have a peaceful life, even though I'm determined to be stubborn.' By doing this he will be sweeping away both watered and parched ground alike.' ²⁰ the LORD will never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and / His jealousy will burn against that man. ¹⁶ And the Lord said to Moses, Now you are going to rest with your fathers; and this people will be false to me, uniting themselves to the strange gods of the land where they are going; they will be turned away from me and will not keep the agreement I have made with them. ¹⁷ Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they will be devoured and many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us?

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, thick and sated. And he abandoned God who made him, and fell away from the Rock of his salvation. ¹⁶ They provoked him to jealousy over foreigners and to anger over detestable things. ¹⁷ They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they did not know, to new gods that came up of late, which your fathers did not dread. ¹⁸ "You ignored the rock that fathered you and forgot the God who gave you life. ¹⁹ The LORD saw it and became jealous, provoked by his sons and daughters. ²⁰ He said, “I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. ²¹ They made me jealous with not God; They irritated me with their vanities: And I will make them jealous with not a people; With a foolish nation will I irritate them. ²² For a fire has been kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest Sheol, and consumes the earth and its produce; and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains. ²³ I will heap evils upon them, and will spend my arrows among them. ²⁴ While they are wasting by famine, and voracious birds; The burning carbuncle also shall be incurable; I will send against them the teeth of wild beasts, With the venom of serpents, trailing on the ground. ²⁵ Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man. ²⁶ I said: "I will scatter them, erasing their memory from the human race, ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should misunderstand, and lest they should say, Our hand has triumphed, and the LORD has not done all this.

¹⁶ For I said, "Do not let them gloat over me, or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."

⁴² You have exalted the right hand of his foes; You have made all his enemies rejoice.

¹¹ "Now say to the people of Judah and to those who live in Jerusalem, This is what the LORD says: 'I am going to prepare a disaster and make a plot against you. Turn from your evil ways, change your lives, and do good.'

⁵ Her foes have become her master, her enemies are at ease; the LORD has made her suffer because of the greatness of her transgressions. Her children have gone away, captive before the foe.

¹ How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down the beauty of Israel from heaven to the earth and has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger. ² The Lord has swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob without pity. He has thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them down to the ground. He has profaned the kingdom and its princes.

⁸ The LORD has determined to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He has stretched out the line, he has not withdrawn his hand from destroying. He has made the rampart and wall to lament; they languish together.

⁸ '"I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices. ⁹ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you (my eye will not feel sorry for you). I will repay you in accordance with your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow.

³ Therefore, thus says the LORD: Look! I am planning disaster against this family from which you will not be able to remove your necks. You will not walk proudly, for it is a time of disaster.

¹³⁶ Streams of waters flowed down my eyes when I kept not your law.

¹⁴⁵ I cried with all my heart. Answer me, O LORD! I will observe your statutes.

¹⁶ the LORD, they came to you in their distress. When you disciplined them, they could barely whisper a prayer. ¹⁷ Like a woman with child and about to give birth struggles and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD.

³¹ I heard a cry like that of a woman in labor, anguish like one giving birth to her first born, the cry of the daughter of Zion gasping for air, stretching out her hand: "Woe is me! I'm about to faint in front of killers!"

¹ Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹⁷ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "Consider closely, and call for the wailing women, so that they come, and for the skillful women, so that they come. ¹⁸ And let them make haste and take up a lament over us, so that our eyes may run down with tears, and waters flow from our eyelids.

¹⁷ If you don't listen, I'll cry secretly because of your pride. My eyes will cry bitterly, flowing tears, because the LORD's flock has been taken captive.

² She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has none to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies.

⁴⁸ Streams of tears run down from my eyes because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. ⁴⁹ My eyes have poured down unceasingly without respite,

¹⁴ They haven’t cried to me with their heart, but they howl on their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They turn away from me.

¹¹ For the stone from the wall shall cry out, and the cross-beam from the wood shall answer it.

¹⁹ Gideon and the hundred men, who were with him, came to the outside of the camp. It was the beginning of the middle watch and they had just posted the new watch. They blew the trumpets, and broke the jars that were in their hands.

¹⁵ "No, sir!" Hannah replied. "I'm a deeply troubled woman. I've drunk neither wine nor beer. I've been pouring out my soul before the LORD.

⁶ So they came together at Mizpah, drew water, and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted there and said, "We have sinned against the LORD." Then Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.

²⁴ »Sighing comes to me instead of food. My groans pour out like water.

² Hear the voice of my petitions, when I cry to you, when I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.

⁸ By day the LORD commands his loyal love, and in the night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

⁸ ¶ Wait in him at all times; ye peoples, pour out your heart before him; God is our refuge. Selah.

⁴ Thus will I bless thee while I live: and in thy name I will lift up my hands.

⁵⁵ In the night I remember your name, LORD, and keep your instruction.

¹⁴⁷ I rise before dawn and cry for help. I put my hope in your words. ¹⁴⁸ My eyes stay open through the night watches, that I might meditate on your word.

² Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and praise the LORD.

² Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice.

² I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles.

⁹ I yearn for you in the night. In the morning I long for you with all my being. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.

²⁰ Your sons have fainted. They lie at the head of every street. They are like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the rage of the LORD and the rebuke of your God.

¹¹ ( λ - [Kaf.]) My eyes are worn out from crying, my insides are churning, My emotions pour out in grief because my people are destroyed Children and infants faint in the streets of the city. ¹² They tell their mothers, "Where is grain and wine?" When they faint as the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives fade away in their mothers' bosom.

¹ How the gold has grown dim, the pure gold has changed. The stones of holiness are scattered at the head of every street. ² The precious sons of Zion are weighed against pure gold; how they are counted as earthen vessels, the work of a potter's hand! ³ Even the jackals offer their breast. They nurse their young ones. But the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. ⁴ The nursing infant's tongue sticks to the roof of his mouth for thirst. The young children ask for bread, but no one gives to them. ⁵ Those who ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those who were brought up in purple embrace ash heaps. ⁶ The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of Sodom, which was overturned suddenly without a hand lifted to help her. ⁷ Her consecrated ones were purer than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance was like lapis lazuli. ⁸ Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones, it has become dry like wood. ⁹ Those killed by the sword are better off than those who died of starvation. For these die slowly and waste away from lack of food from the field.

¹⁰ Therefore the fathers will eat the sons within you, and the sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments on you; and I will scatter the whole remnant of you to all the winds.

¹⁶ '"When I shoot my destructive arrows of famine at you, I will shoot to kill you. I will bring more and more famine into your land. I will cut off your food supply.

¹⁰ Yet she was carried away. She went into captivity. Her young sons also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets. And they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

²⁵ During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea.

³⁵ Early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up and slipped out to a solitary place to pray.

³⁵ Therefore keep watch, because you do not know when the master of the house will return—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning.

¹² In those days, Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and He spent the night in prayer to God.

⁸ Therefore, I want men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension.

¹¹ And Moses implored the LORD his God, and he said, "Why, the LORD, should your anger blaze against your people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt with great power and with a strong hand?

²⁹ so that ye shall eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.

²⁶ I prayed to the LORD and said Sovereign LORD, don't destroy Your people and Your inheritance that You have redeemed through Your greatness, that You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand.

⁵³ "Because of the hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade, you will eat the flesh of your own children, the sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you. ⁵⁴ "The kindest and most sensitive man among you will become stingy toward his brother, the wife he loves, and the children he still has left. ⁵⁵ »He will give none of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all that he has left. These are hardships your enemies will make you suffer during the blockade of all your cities. ⁵⁶ "The kindest and most sensitive woman among you, so sensitive and tender that she would not even step on an ant, will become stingy toward the husband she loves or toward her own son or daughter. ⁵⁷ She will eat her afterbirth and her newborn children secretly since there will be nothing left on account of the siege and distress with which your enemy will oppress you in your cities."

²⁸ The king said to her, "What ails you?" She answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.' ²⁹ So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day, I told her, 'Give me your son so we can eat him!' But she has hidden her son!"

⁶⁴ Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep.

¹⁴ So the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed (rush) in one day. ¹⁵ Elders and dignitaries are the head, and prophets who teach lies are the tail. ¹⁶ For those who lead this people lead them astray; and those who are led by them are destroyed. ¹⁷ Therefore the Lord will have no joy in their young men, neither will have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is a hypocrite and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁶ For you are our father, although Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, the LORD are our father, Our Redeemer from of old is your name. ¹⁷ O LORD, why do you make us wander from your ways, and harden our heart from your fear? Return for your servants' sake, the tribes of your inheritance. ¹⁸ For a little while Your holy people possessed it. Our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary. ¹⁹ We are yours: you never bore rule over them; they were not called by your name.

⁸ But now, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter and we are all the work of your hand. ⁹ Do not be angry very severely, O LORD, nor remember iniquity forever. Behold, look, we beseech you, we are all your people. ¹⁰ Thy holy cities are become a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. ¹¹ Our holy and beautiful Temple where our ancestors praised you has been burned to the ground. All that we valued has been ruined. ¹² Despite these things, the LORD, will you restrain yourself? Will you be silent and make us suffer beyond measure?

¹⁵ Therefore the LORD says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn't send them, yet they say, 'Sword and famine will not be in this land.' Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine. ¹⁶ The people to whom they have prophesied will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. There will be no one to bury them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters. I'll pour out on them the judgment they deserve.'" ¹⁷ You, say this word to them; My eyes drip with tears night and day and they cease not: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breaking - with a mighty stroking stroke. ¹⁸ If I go out into the field, I see those slain by the sword! If I go into the city, I see the ravages of the famine! Indeed, both prophet and priest ply their trade in the land, but they don't know anything.'"

²⁰ the LORD, we acknowledge our wickedness, the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against thee. ²¹ For the sake of your name, do not despise us. Do not dishonor your glorious throne. Remember your promise to us. Do not break it.

⁹ "I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they will eat one another's flesh in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their life will cause them."'

¹¹ "For both prophet as well as priest are godless, even in my temple I have found their wickedness," declares the LORD. ¹² Therefore their way will be slippery. They'll be driven out into the darkness, where they'll fall. For I'll bring disaster on them, the year of their judgment," declares the LORD. ¹³ "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw a disgusting thing, for they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. ¹⁴ In the prophets of Jerusalem I have also seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one returns from his wickedness. They have all become to me as Sodom, and its inhabitants as Gomorrah.” ¹⁵ Therefore the LORD of Armies says concerning the prophets: “Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink poisoned water; for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”

¹⁹ I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders perished in the city, while they searched for food to refresh their souls.

¹⁰ ( ι - [Yod.]) With their own hands, compassionate women boil their own children they become their food when my beloved people were destroyed.

¹³ But it hath happened because of the sins of her prophets, the iniquities of her priests, that had shed in the midst of her the blood of the righteous.

⁵ I heard God say to the other men: "Follow him through the city and kill. Spare no one! Have mercy on no one. ⁶ Slay utterly old man and youth, and virgin, and infants, and women: but go ye not nigh any on whom is the mark: begin at my sanctuary. So they began with the elder men who were within in the house.

⁵⁰ A hard-faced nation, who will have no respect for the old or mercy for the young:

²¹ They turned over everyone in the city for destruction and executed them, including both men and women, young and old, and oxen, sheep, and donkeys.

³ Now, go and attack Amalek. Completely destroy all that they have. Don't spare them, but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, both ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"

¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand.

¹³ Letters were sent by couriers to all the provinces of the king to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, on one day, the thirteenth day of the month, that is Adar, and to plunder their goods.

⁶² He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance. ⁶³ Fire devoured their young men; and their maidens had no marriage–song

¹¹ I'm full of the wrath of the LORD, and I'm tired of holding it back. Pour it out on the children in the street and on the groups of young men gathered together. Indeed, both husband and wife will be caught in it, the old and the very old.

²¹ For death has come into our windows, it has entered into our fortresses, to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the public squares.

²² therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, "Look, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine;

²¹ Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and give them over to the power of the sword. Let their wives become childless and widows. Let their men be killed and their young men struck by the sword in battle.

²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin;

¹⁵ The Lord has rejected all my mighty ones in my midst. He called an assembly against me, to crush my young men; like in a wine press, the Lord has trodden on the virgin daughter of Judah.

¹⁸ The LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Please listen all you people, and see my suffering. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

¹⁰ "I sent plagues among you like I did Egypt. I have slain your young men with the sword, and have carried away your horses; and I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp, yet you haven't returned to me," says the LORD.

⁶ For I will have no more pity for the people of the land, says the Lord; but I will give up everyone into his neighbour's hand and into the hand of his king: and they will make the land waste, and I will not keep them safe from their hands.

¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.

¹³ I have heard the slander of many; it is like terror all around me, as they conspire together and plot to take my life.

¹⁷ Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, you people of the earth. ¹⁸ And it comes that the one fleeing from the awful sound shall fall into the pit. And the ascender from the midst of the pit shall be seized in a snare. For the crevices of the heights are opened, and the foundations of the earth shall quake."

²⁵ Do not go out into the field. Do not walk on the road. The enemy has a sword and terror is on every side.

² You, neither take a woman nor have sons or daughters in this place: ³ For this is what the LORD says about the sons and daughters who are born in this place, about their mothers who give birth to them, and about their fathers who father them in this land: ⁴ "They will die of lethal diseases. They will not be mourned or buried. They will be as dung on the surface of the ground and die by sword and famine (war and starvation). Their carcasses will become food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth."

³ The next day Pashur released Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah said to him, "The LORD has not named you Pashur, but rather Magor-missabib.

⁵ "What do I see in them? They are terrified. They are retreating. Their warriors are defeated. They flee without looking back. Terror is all around them!" declares the LORD.

¹² Even if they rear their children, I will, in turn, make them childless in fact, woe to them when I turn away from them! ¹³ I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place; but Ephraim will bring out his children to the murderer. ¹⁴ Give them, O LORD— what will you give them? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts. ¹⁵ All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house, I will love them no more: all their princes are rebels. ¹⁶ Ephraim is blighted; its roots shriveled. It can bear no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill their cherished offspring.

¹ I saw the LORD standing beside the altar. He said: "Strike the capitals that the thresholds may shake! Break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword. Not one of them will get away. Not one of them will escape! ² Though they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them and though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. ³ Though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out there; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent, and it will bite them. ⁴ Though they go into captivity before their enemies, there I will command the sword, and it will kill them. I will set my eyes on them for evil, and not for good.

²⁹ Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed.’ ³⁰ "Then they will say to the mountains fall on us and to the hills cover us.
