²⁶ And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the Law of God, and took a great stone and set it up there under an oak by the sanctuary of the LORD.

¹⁸ Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had under his head. ⁴ Moses wrote down all the LORD’s words. Early the next morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain. He erected twelve sacred stones for the twelve tribes of Israel.

²⁴ And when Moses finished writing all the words of this law in a book, even to the end, ²⁵ he gave this charge to the Levites who carried the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD: ²⁶ "Take this Book of the Law, and put it next to the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD your God, where it will be a witness against you.

³ and tell them, 'Pick up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests' feet were standing, bring them along with you, and put them down where you camp tonight.'" ⁴ So Joshua summoned the twelve men whom he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe. ⁵ And Joshua said to them, "Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God to the middle of the Jordan, and each one of you lift up a stone on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, ⁶ Let this serve as a sign among you, so that when your children ask in times to come, 'What do these stones mean to you,' ⁷ then you shall tell them, 'Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.'" ⁸ Thus the Israelites did as Joshua commanded. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan as the LORD told Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, and they carried them over with them to the camp, and they put them there. ⁹ Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.
