¹⁴ And she took off her widow's robes from her, and veiled herself with a veil, and disguised herself. And she sat at the entrance of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up, and she had not been given to him for a wife. ¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

¹⁴ You shall not commit adultery.

⁴ Then David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) And she returned to her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, saying, I am with child. ⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the troops were and how the war was going. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. And Uriah left the king's house. And a gift from the king went out after him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king's house with all the servants of his master and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ They told David, "Uriah did not go down to his house." David said to Uriah, "Are you not coming from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?" ¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are camped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing." ¹² Then David invited Uriah, "Stay here today, and tomorrow I'll send you back." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem all that day and the next. ¹³ And David invited him, and he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but did not go down to his house.

¹² "'You did this secretly. I will make this happen in broad daylight in front of all Israel.'"

¹³ Yet you say, What does El know? Can He judge through murkiness? ¹⁴ "'Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the dome of the heavens.'"

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees."

¹⁸ If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and have cast in your lot with adulterers.

¹¹ Then they say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?"

⁷ They say, "The LORD cannot see, and the God of Jacob will not notice."

³² He who commits adultery with a woman lacks judgment and destroys himself. ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall never be wiped away. ³⁴ because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge. ³⁵ He will not accept any compensation, and he will not be willing, though the bribe is large.

⁹ at twilight, at the day's evening, in the midst of night and the darkness. ¹⁰ Behold, there a woman met him with the attire of a prostitute, and with crafty intent.

¹² Then He said to me, Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, every man in his rooms of images? They say, 'the LORD doesn't see us; the LORD has forsaken the land'.

⁹ Then he said to me, "The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perversion: for they say, 'The LORD has forsaken the land, and the LORD doesn't see.'
