¹⁴ With the light, riseth the murderer, He slayeth the poor and needy, And, in the night, he becometh like a thief.

¹⁴ In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ The letter said: "Put Uriah on the front line where the fighting is the worst. Pull the troops back from him, so that he will be wounded and die." ¹⁶ Wherefore as Joab was besieging the city, he put Urias in the place where he knew the bravest men were. ¹⁷ When the men of the city came out to fight Joab, some of David's army staff members fell, and Uriah the Hittite died, too.

⁸ He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net. ¹⁰ The helpless are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength.

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds! When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

³⁹ But understand this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

⁷ Therefore do not be partners with them; ⁸ For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, ⁹ for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. ¹⁰ Test and prove what pleases the Lord. ¹¹ Have no fellowship with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

² for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

³ Remember therefore what you have received and heard; keep it, and repent. But if you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.
