¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm.

¹⁸ "How often are they like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?

¹¹ when I said: 'This far you may come and no farther'; here is where your proud waves halt?

⁴ This is not so for the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.

⁵ You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever.

⁵ Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them.

⁵ God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn. ⁶ Nations roar, kingdoms shake; he utters his voice, the earth melts. ⁷ the LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. ⁸ Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he has made in the earth. ⁹ He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire. ¹⁰ "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth." ¹¹ the LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

¹³ My God, make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind. ¹⁴ As a fire burneth a forest,—And as a flame setteth mountains ablaze, ¹⁵ so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood. ¹⁶ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire.

³³ Behold, the Sovereign Sovereign LORD Almighty will lop off the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be cut down! The tall ones will be brought low. ³⁴ He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax. Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.

²⁵ To break Assur in my land, and upon my mountain I will tread him down: and his yoke was removed from off them, and his burden shall remove from off their shoulder.

⁴ For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the rainstorm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless was like a rainstorm against a wall, ⁵ the noise of strangers like heat in a dry place, you subdued the heat with the shade of clouds; the song of the ruthless was stilled.

¹ In that day the LORD will punish with his sword, his fierce, great and powerful sword. He will slay Leviathan the fleeing, coiling serpent, the monster of the sea.

⁵ »Your cruel enemies will be swept away like dust in a windstorm. It will be sudden and unexpected like chaff in the wind.

³⁰ And the LORD shall make the majesty of His voice heard; and He shows His arm coming down with raging anger and flame of consuming fire, cloudburst and storm, and hailstones. ³¹ For from the voice of the LORD shall Assur be broken down, he will smite with a rod. ³² And every stroke of the appointed staff, which the LORD will lay upon him, will be with the sound of tambourine and harps. And he will fight with them in battles with the brandishing of his arm. ³³ For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.

⁸ And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of a man, and a sword not of a human shall devour him; and he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be put to forced labor. ⁹ And his rock will pass away because of terror and his rulers will be dismayed at the ensign, says the LORD, whose fire is in Zion and his furnace in Jerusalem.

¹ Woe to you who destroy for you have not been destroyed! Woe to you who betray for you who have not been betrayed! When you stop destroying you will be destroyed; when you stop betraying you will be betrayed. ² the LORD, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our strength every morning, our salvation in time of distress. ³ When you make a sound the peoples flee. When you rise up, the nations scatter.

⁹ The land dries up and wastes away. Lebanon is ashamed and withers. Sharon is like a desert plain. Bashan and Carmel drop their leaves. ¹⁰ Now will I rise!saying is the LORD. "Now will I be exalted! Now will I be lifted up!" ¹¹ You will conceive chaff. You will give birth to stubble. Your breath is a fire that will devour you. ¹² "The peoples will be burned as if to lime. Like thorn bushes they will be set ablaze.

²⁹ "For the reason that you rage against me and because your insolence (arrogance) has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the way you came." ³⁰ "'This will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah: 'This year you will eat what grows by itself. The second year you will eat what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. ³¹ »‘Again a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. ³² "'Out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Sovereign LORD will accomplish this. ³³ "'Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield, or build a siege ramp against it. ³⁴ By the way that he came, he will return by the same and he will not come to this city, says the LORD. ³⁵ "'I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant!'" ³⁶ The angel of the LORD put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. The people got up the next morning and saw all the dead bodies! ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. ³⁸ One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword. They escaped to the land of Ararat. Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.

¹⁵ "See I will make you into a threshing sledge, new and sharp, with many teeth. You will thresh the mountains and crush them. You will reduce the hills to chaff. ¹⁶ "You will winnow them. The wind will pick them up and a gale will blow them away. But you will rejoice in the LORD and glory in the Holy One of Israel.

³⁵ Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were broken in pieces together and became like chaff from a summer threshing floor that the breeze carries away without leaving a trace. Then the rock that struck the statue grew into a huge mountain and filled the entire earth.

³ Therefore, they will be like the morning cloud, and like the dew of early morning going away, like chaff swirling from the threshing floor, or like smoke from a window.

³⁹ So he got up, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind quieted down, and there was a great calm. ⁴⁰ And He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you not still have [any] faith?” ⁴¹ And they feared exceedingly, and said to each other: Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!
