¹ The oracle of Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz saw: ² Raise a signal on a bare hill, lift up your voice to them; wave the hand and may they enter the gateways of the noblemen. ³ I have commanded My holy ones; I have also called My warriors for My anger, those who rejoice in My highness. ⁴ A sound, a noise is on the mountains, the likeness of many people! A sound of the roar of the kingdoms, of nations gathering! the LORD Almighty is mustering an army for battle. ⁵ They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the LORD and the weapons of His wrath, to destroy all the land. ⁶ Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from Shaddai! ⁷ Therefore all hands will grow slack, and every human heart will melt, ⁸ and they will be dismayed. Pangs and labor pains will seize them; they will tremble like a woman giving birth. They will stare at one another, their faces flushing. ⁹ Look, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy its sinners out of it. ¹⁰ "The stars of heaven and their constellations will not shine forth their light. The sun will be dark when it rises and the moon will not shine its light. ¹¹ I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity. I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will humble the arrogance of the terrible. ¹² I will make a man more precious than fine gold, even man than the gold of Ophir. ¹³ "Therefore I will make the heavens tremble. The earth will shake from its place at the fury of the LORD Almighty in the day of his burning anger. ¹⁴ It will happen that like a hunted gazelle, and like sheep that no one gathers, they will each turn to their own people, and will each flee to their own land. ¹⁵ "All who are found will be pierced through. All who are captured will fall by the sword. ¹⁶ Their infants also will be dashed in pieces before their eyes. Their houses will be rifled and their wives ravished. ¹⁷ Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes; who will not regard silver, and who will not delight in gold. ¹⁸ "And their bows will mow down the young men. They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb. Nor will they have compassion on children. ¹⁹ Babylon, the beauty (honor) (glory) of kingdoms, the majesty of Chaldean pride, will be overthrew by God like Sodom and Gomorrah. ²⁰ »It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation! Nor will the Arab pitch his tent there. Nor will shepherds take their flocks there. ²¹ But wild animals of the desert will lie there, and their houses will be full of jackals. Ostriches will dwell there, and wild goats will frolic there. ²² Wolves will cry in their castles, and jackals in the pleasant palaces. Her time is near to come, and her days will not be prolonged.

¹ The vision of Isaiah the son of Amos, which he saw upon Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

¹⁹ Babylon, the beauty (honor) (glory) of kingdoms, the majesty of Chaldean pride, will be overthrew by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

⁴ that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, "How the oppressor has ceased. How the attacker has ceased." ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, ⁶ He whose rod was on the peoples with an unending wrath, ruling the nations in passion, with an uncontrolled rule. ⁷ All the earth is at rest and is quiet; they break out into singing. ⁸ the trees of Lebanon also rejoice against you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, From the time that you have been laid low, no one has come up to cut us down. ⁹ Hell from below is moved for you, to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the dead for you, all the he-goats of the earth. It has raised from their thrones all the kings of the nations. ¹⁰ They will all answer and say to you, Have you also become weak as we? Have you become like us? ¹¹ "'Your pride has been brought down to the grave along with the music of your harps. Maggots are spread out like a bed under you, and worms cover you.' ¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low. ¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit. ¹⁶ Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, "Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms; ¹⁷ who made the world like a desert and tore down its cities and did not let his prisoners go home?' ¹⁸ All the kings of the nations sleep in glory, each one in his own house. ¹⁹ But you are thrown from your grave like a despised branch, like the covering of the slain, those pierced by the sword, those who go down into the stones of the Pit, like a dead body trampled under foot. ²⁰ You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be mentioned forever. ²¹ prepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the World with wars. ²² For I will rise up against them, says the LORD Almighty, and cut off from Babylon the name and remnant, and son, and grandson, says the LORD. ²³ "And I will make her a possession of the hedgehog, and pools of water, and I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction," declares the LORD Almighty.

²⁸ This burden was in the year king Ahaz died:

¹ Surely in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined. Certainly in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.

¹ An oracle of Damascus: "Look! Damascus will cease being a city and will become a heap of ruins.

¹ the LORD rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him. The hearts of the Egyptians melt (their courage fails) within them.

¹ The burden concerning the desert by the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it comes from the desert, from a terrible land. ² A harsh vision is revealed to me; the deceiver deceives, and the plunderer plunders. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media! I have caused all her sighing to cease. ³ So my loins fill with pain: pangs hold me as pangs of a woman birthing: I twist at hearing; I terrify at seeing: ⁴ My heart failed, darkness amazed me: Babylon my beloved is become a wonder to me. ⁵ They set the table, they spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink; Rise up, captains, oil the shields, ⁶ For this is what the LORD says to me: "Go, station the lookout, and let him report what he sees. ⁷ When he sees chariots, horsemen in pairs, riders on donkeys, riders on camels, let him listen diligently, very diligently." ⁸ Then the lookout shouted: "Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower in the daytime, and every night I stay at my post. ⁹ "Look! Here come chariots and horsemen in pairs. Then he said: 'Babylon has fallen! She has fallen! All the idols they worship lie shattered on the ground.'" ¹⁰ My downtrodden people and the son of my threshing floor, I will announce to you what I have heard from the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel. ¹¹ The burden concerning Dumah. He calls to me from Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?

¹³ You caravans of Dedanites, who camp in the thickets of Arabia,

¹ The burden concerning the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you are wholly gone up to the housetops?

²⁵ On that day, declares the LORD Almighty, the peg that was driven will move away into a secure place, and it will be cut down and fall, and the load that was on her will be cut off. For the LORD has spoken.'"

¹⁴ Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "For your sake, I have sent to Babylon, and I will bring all of them down as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships of their rejoicing.

¹ But now hear, Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen. ² "'This is what the LORD says, the one who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: 'Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

¹ "Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and delicate. ² Take the millstones and grind flour. Remove your veil, lift up your skirt, uncover your legs, and wade through the rivers. ³ Your nakedness will be uncovered. Yes, your shame will be seen. I will take vengeance, and will spare no one.” ⁴ Our Redeemer, the LORD Almighty is His name, the Holy One of Israel. ⁵ "Sit in silence, and go into darkness, daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms. ⁶ I was angry with my people, I profaned my inheritance, and gave them into your hand: you showed them no mercy; on the aged you have very heavily laid your yoke. ⁷ "'You said: 'I will be a queen for a very long time!' You did not consider these things or remember their outcome. ⁸ Now, therefore hear this, Thou Lady of pleasure Who dwelleth securely, Who saith in her heart,—I, [am], and there is no one besides, I shall not sit a widow, Nor know loss of children. ⁹ »Two things will come on you suddenly in one day: Loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in full measure in spite of your abundance of sorceries, in spite of the great power of your spells. ¹⁰ For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, 'No one sees me.' Your wisdom and your knowledge has perverted you. You have said in your heart, 'I am, and there is no one else besides me.' ¹¹ Yet shall evil came upon thee; thou shalt not know how to charm it away; and calamity shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it away; and ruin shall come upon thee suddenly, before thou knowest. ¹² Stand now among your spells, and with your many sorceries, in which you have wearied yourself since your youth. Perhaps you will be able to profit; perhaps may cause quaking. ¹³ You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the knowers from the new moons, stand up and save you from the things that will come upon you. ¹⁴ "Surely they are like stubble. The fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone and no fire to sit by. ¹⁵ "That is all they can do for you, these you have labored with and trafficked with since childhood. Each of them goes on in his error. No one can save you.

³³ "Jeremiah, when these people, the prophet, or a priest ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'You are the burden, and I'll cast you out,'" declares the LORD. ³⁴ "And the prophet, and the priest, and the people who say, 'The burden of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his house. ³⁵ This is what you should say to one another and among yourselves, 'What has the LORD answered?' or 'What has the LORD said?' ³⁶ But you shall not mention the burden of the LORD, for the burden is to each one his word, and so you twist the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God. ³⁷ Thus shall you say to the prophet, What has the LORD answered you? and, What has the LORD spoken? ³⁸ But, since ye keep on saying, The Oracle of the LORD, therefore, Thus saith the LORD, Because ye have said this word, The oracle of the LORD, whereas I had sent unto you saying, Ye shall not say, The oracle of the LORD

¹² And it shall be, when seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, and the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, says the LORD; and I will make it everlasting ruins. ¹³ And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have spoken against it, with all that is written in this book, prophesied by Jeremiah against all the Gentiles. ¹⁴ For they have served them, whereas they were many nations, and great kings: and I will repay them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their hands. ¹⁵ "This is what the LORD the God of Israel said to me: 'Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my fury, and make all the nations to whom I am sending you drink from it. ¹⁶ And they shall drink, and stagger, and go mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. ¹⁷ So I took the cup from the LORD's hand, and I made all the nations to whom the LORD sent me drink it: ¹⁸ Jerusalem, the cities of Judah, its kings and officials to make them into a ruin, an object of horror and scorn, and a curse, as it is this day; ¹⁹ Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his officials, and all his people; ²⁰ and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, all the kings of the Philistines, Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod; ²¹ Edom, and Moab, and the Ammonites; ²² all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the Isles that are beyond the sea; ²³ Dedan, Tema, Buz and the shaven Ishmaelites; ²⁴ all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the various people who live in the desert; ²⁵ and all the kings of Ailam and all the kings of the Persians ²⁶ all the kings of the north, near and far, one after another-all the kingdoms of the earth. Last of all, the king of Sheshach will drink from the cup.

¹ This is the word that the LORD spoke through the prophet Jeremiah about Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans. ² "Declare and proclaim among the nations. Lift up a banner and proclaim. Don't conceal anything. Say, 'Babylon will be captured. Bel will be disgraced, and Marduk will be destroyed. Her idols will be disgraced, and her filthy images will be destroyed.' ³ For a nation from the north will go up against her. It will make her land into an object of horror, and no one will live in it. Both people and animals will wander off, and they'll leave. ⁴ In those days, and at that time, says the LORD, the sons of Israel shall come, they and the sons of Judah together, going and weeping. They shall go and seek the LORD their God. ⁵ They will ask the way to Zion, turning their faces there. They will come and join themselves to the LORD by an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten. ⁶ My people have been lost sheep; their shepherds thrust them out, they caused them to wander on the mountains; they went from mountain to hill, they forgot their resting place. ⁷ All those who found them have devoured them. And their foes have said, 'We are not guilty, because they have sinned against the LORD, the true pasture, even the LORD, the hope of their ancestors.' ⁸ Go in flight out of Babylon, go out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and be like he-goats before the flocks. ⁹ Indeed, I'm going to stir up and bring against Babylon a great company of nations from the land of the north. They'll deploy for battle against her, and from there she will be captured. Their arrows will be like a skilled warrior; they won't miss their targets. ¹⁰ And Chaldea shall be a prize; all who plunder her shall be satisfied, declares the LORD. ¹¹ Because you rejoice, because you exult, O destroyers of My inheritance, because you are fat like the heifer in grass, and neigh like strong ones, ¹² Your mother will be greatly devastated, she who gave birth to you will be ashamed. She will become the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. ¹³ Because of the anger of the LORD she won't be inhabited, but will be utterly devastated. Everyone who passes by Babylon will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds. ¹⁴ Deploy the troops all around Babylon. All who bend the bow, shoot at her and spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD. ¹⁵ Shout against her all around: she has submitted herself; her towers are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her. ¹⁶ Cut off the sower from Babylon, and the one who uses the sickle in the time of harvest. Because of the sword of the oppressor each one will turn to their people, and each one will flee to their land. ¹⁷ "The people of Israel are like scattered sheep that lions have chased. The first to devour them was the king of Assyria. The last to gnaw at their bones was King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. ¹⁸ "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'I am going to punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria. ¹⁹ I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he will feed on Carmel and Bashan. His soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. ²⁰ In those days and at that time," declares the LORD, "the guilt of Israel will be sought, but there is none, and the sins of Judah, but they will not be found, for I will forgive those I left behind. ²¹ "Attack the land of Merathaim and the people who live in Pekod. Claim them for me by killing them with a sword, says the LORD. Do everything I commanded you. ²² A noise of battle [is] in the land, and of great destruction." ²³ How s cut and broken the hammer of all the earth! How hath Babylon become an astonishment among the nations! ²⁴ "I will set traps for you, Babylon. You will be caught, but you will not know it. You will be found and captured because you have opposed the LORD." ²⁵ the LORD will open his armory and bring out the weapons of his fury, because the LORD Almighty has a job to do in the land of the Babylonians. ²⁶ "Come to her from afar. Open up her barns. Pile her up like heaps of grain, and completely destroy her. Don't leave any survivors. ²⁷ Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their punishment. ²⁸ Fugitives and refugees from Babylon are coming to Zion to tell about the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance for his temple. ²⁹ "Summon many to Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Camp all around her, let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds. Do to her just as she has done. For she has behaved arrogantly against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel. ³⁰ Therefore, her warriors will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day," declares the LORD. ³¹ "Look, I am against you, O arrogant one," declares Sovereign LORD Almighty, "for your day has come, the time when I will punish you. ³² The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will raise him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all who are around him.” ³³ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah likewise, for all their captors have seized them, they refuse to let them go free. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty, is His name. He shall thoroughly plead their cause, so that he may give rest to the land, and give trouble to the people of Babylon. ³⁵ A sword against the Chaldeans," declares the LORD, "and against the inhabitants of Babylon, against her officials and her wise men. ³⁶ A sword against the oracle priests, and they will become foolish. A sword against her warriors, and they will be filled with terror. ³⁷ A sword against her horses, against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst. They'll become women. A sword against her treasures. They'll be plundered. ³⁸ A drought is on her waters; and they shall be dried up. For it is the land of idols, and they act madly with idols. ³⁹ "That is why desert animals will live with hyenas. Desert owls will also live there. It will no longer be inhabited or lived in for generations. ⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, states the LORD, so no man shall live there, nor shall a son of man stay in it. ⁴¹ "Look, people are coming from the north. A great nation and many kings will be stirred up from the ends of the earth. ⁴² They grab bow and spear. They're cruel and show no mercy. Their sound roars like the sea, as they ride on horses deployed like men ready for battle against you, daughter of Babylon. ⁴³ The king of Babylon has heard the news about them, and his hands hang limp. Distress has seized him, like a woman in labor. ⁴⁴ Behold he will be like the lion which must go up from the swelling of Jordan to Gaitham, for I will speedily drive men from her, and set every youth against her: for who is like me and who can withstand me? And who is the shepherd who can stand before me? ⁴⁵ Listen to what the LORD is going to do against Babylon and the things he intends to do to the land of the Babylonians. He will surely drag away the little ones of the flock. He will surely destroy the pasture because of the Babylonians. ⁴⁶ At the sound of Babylon's capture, the earth shall tremble, and a cry is heard among the nations.

¹ This is what the LORD says: "Look, I'm going to stir up a destroying wind against Babylon and the inhabitants of Leb-kamai. ² I'll send foreigners to Babylon, and they'll winnow her, and devastate her land. They'll come against her from every side on the day of her disaster. ³ Don't let the archer bend the bow; don't let him rise up in his armor. Don't spare her young men. Completely destroy her entire army. ⁴ They will fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets. ⁵ For Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, of his God, of the LORD Almighty, though their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel. ⁶ Flee from Babylon, and each of you, escape with your life! Don't be destroyed because of her guilt, for it's time for the LORD's vengeance. He is paying back what is due to her. ⁷ Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD's hand, making the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine, therefore the nations have gone mad. ⁸ Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed. Wail for her. Take balm for her pain, perhaps she may be healed. ⁹ “We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed. Forsake her, and let's each go into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. ¹⁰ The LORD will vindicate us. Come! Let us declare the work of the LORD our God in Zion. ¹¹ Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes he has decided to destroy Babylon. Indeed, it's the LORD's vengeance, vengeance for his temple. ¹² Set up the banner on the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up the watchmen; prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both planned and done that which He spoke against the people of Babylon. ¹³ O you who live by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your unjust gain. ¹⁴ the LORD Almighty has sworn by Himself, saying, Surely I will fill you with men as with locusts; and they shall lift up a shout against you. ¹⁵ He that made the earth by his power, that hath prepared the world by his wisdom, and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. ¹⁶ When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens. He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses. ¹⁷ Everyone is stupid and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his own idols, for his images are false, and there is no life in them. ¹⁸ They're worthless, a work of mockery, and when the time of punishment comes, they'll perish. ¹⁹ The portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the former of all things; including the tribe of his inheritance: the LORD of Armies is his name. ²⁰ You are My war club and weapons of war, for with you I will shatter nations and with you I will destroy kingdoms. ²¹ and with you, I shatter the horse and his rider; and with you, I shatter the chariot and his rider; ²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin; ²³ I'll smash the shepherd and his flock with you. I'll smash the farmer and his team of oxen with you. I'll smash governors and officials with you. ²⁴ "Before your eyes I'll repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they did in Zion," declares the LORD. ²⁵ "Look, I'm against you, destroying mountain, who destroys the whole earth," declares the LORD. "I'll stretch out my hand against you and roll you down from the crags. And I'll make you a burned-out mountain. ²⁶ And they will not take from you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations, but you will be desolate forever, says the LORD. ²⁷ Set ye up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come u ²⁸ Prepare the nations for holy war against her, the kings of the Medes, with their governors and all their officials, and every land of their dominion. ²⁹ The land quakes and writhes because the LORD's purposes against Babylon stand firm, to make the land of Babylon a waste without inhabitants. ³⁰ The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting. They stay in their strongholds; their strength is dried up; they have become like women. Her buildings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken. ³¹ Runners run to meet runners. Messengers follow messengers. They inform the king of Babylon that his entire city is captured. ³² the fords occupied; the fens burnt up; and the soldiers sore afraid. ³³ For thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, "The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trodden down, just a little while and the time of the harvest will come for her." ³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out. ³⁵ May the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon," says the inhabitant of Zion. "May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea," says Jerusalem. ³⁶ Therefore thus said the LORD; Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry. ³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants. ³⁸ They'll roar together like young lions; they'll growl like lion cubs. ³⁹ When they're excited I'll serve them their banquet, and make them drunk until they're merry. They'll sleep forever and won't wake up," declares the LORD. ⁴⁰ I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he-goats. ⁴¹ How Sheshach is taken, and the praise of the whole earth seized! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations! ⁴² The sea came up against Babylon with its roaring waves, and she is overwhelmed. ⁴³ Her towns have become a waste, a dry and unwatered land, where no man has his living-place and no son of man goes by. ⁴⁴ I'll punish Bel in Babylon, and I'll make what he has swallowed come out of his mouth. The nations will no longer stream to him. Even the wall of Babylon will fall. ⁴⁵ »Get out of her, my people! Run for your lives! Run from the burning anger of the LORD. ⁴⁶ "Do not lose courage or be afraid when rumors are heard in the land. One rumor comes one year; another rumor comes the next year. Rumors of violence are in the land. Rumors that one ruler will fight against another are in the land. ⁴⁷ Therefore, look, days are coming when I'll punish the idols of Babylon. Her entire land will be put to shame, and all her slain will fall in her midst. ⁴⁸ Then the heaven and the earth and all that is in them will shout for joy over Babylon, for from the north the destroyers will come to it," declares the LORD. ⁴⁹ "So Babylon will fall because of the slain of Israel, even as the slain of all the earth have fallen because of Babylon. ⁵⁰ You people escaped from the sword. Now leave! Do not just stand there. Remember the LORD in a distant land and think about Jerusalem. ⁵¹ We have been put to shame. We have been disgraced. Shame covers our faces, because foreigners have gone into the holy places of the LORD's temple. ⁵² "Therefore, look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll punish her idols, and throughout her land the wounded will groan. ⁵³ "Though Babylon should reach up to the heavens and fortify her high fortresses, from me destroyers will come to her," declares the LORD. ⁵⁴ “The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans! ⁵⁵ For the LORD is devastating Babylon, and he obliterates her loud noise from her. Their waves roar like mighty waters, the roar of their voices resounds. ⁵⁶ Indeed, the destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon. Her warriors are captured, and her bows are broken. For the LORD is a God of recompense, and he will repay in full. ⁵⁷ "I will make their officials and wise men drunk, along with their governors, officers, and soldiers. They will fall into a deep sleep and never wake up," proclaims the king, whose name is the LORD Almighty. ⁵⁸ This is what the LORD Almighty says: The thick walls of Babylon will be leveled, and its high gates will be set on fire. People exhaust themselves for nothing. The nations wear themselves out only to have a fire. ⁵⁹ This is the charge that Jeremiah gave unto Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went toward Babylon with Zedekiah the king of Judah, in the fourth year of his reign. Now this Seraiah was a peaceable prince. ⁶⁰ Jeremiah wrote on a single scroll all the disasters that would come on Babylon, all these things that were written about Babylon. ⁶¹ Jeremiah said to Seraiah, "When you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words, ⁶² Then says: 'the LORD, you have threatened to destroy this place so that no person or animal will live here. It will become a permanent ruin.' ⁶³ "When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the middle of the Euphrates River. ⁶⁴ and shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise, because of the evil that I will bring upon it: and they shall be weary. Thus far the words of Jeremiah.

¹⁰ Say to them, 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem, and all the people of Israel who are in it'.

¹ Then one of the seven angels with the seven bowls came and told me, “Come, I will show you the punishment of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters. ² With whom the kings of the earth have committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her adultery. ³ And the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, where I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and of the filthiness of her adulteries: ⁵ And on her forehead a name was written, "MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH." ⁶ I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God's people, and the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her I was perfectly amazed, ⁷ And the angel said to me, Why do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and ten horns. ⁸ The beast which thou sawest, was, and is not, and is to come up out of the abyss, and goeth into perdition; and they that dwell on the earth, whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder, when they see the beast, that he was, and is not, and yet will come. ⁹ This calls for a mind with wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. ¹⁰ There are also seven kings. Five are fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. ¹¹ The beast who was, and is not, is an eighth. He belongs to the seven and he goes to destruction. ¹² “And the ten horns you saw are ten kings, who have not received a kingdom yet, but for one hour they will receive authority as kings, along with the beast. ¹³ These have one purpose and they give their power and authority to the beast. ¹⁴ These will make war with the Lamb and the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those called and chosen and faithful with him. ¹⁵ He said to me, "The waters which you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages. ¹⁶ The ten horns and the beast you saw will hate the prostitute. They will eat her flesh and burn her up with fire, ¹⁷ For God has put in their hearts to accomplish his purpose, by agreeing to give their sovereignty to the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. ¹⁸ The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth."

²⁶ He will lift up a banner to the nations from far, and he will whistle for them from the end of the earth. Look, they will come speedily and swiftly.

³² This day they will halt at Nob. They will shake their fist at the mount of the Daughter of Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.

¹⁵ the LORD will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his scorching wind he will wave his hand over the River, and will split it into seven streams, and cause men to march over in sandals.

³ All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, when a banner is lifted up on the mountains, see ye, and when a trumpet is blown, hear ye!

¹ Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, to subdue nations before him, and strip kings of their armor; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut: ² "I myself will go before you, and I will level the mountains. I will break the doors of bronze and cut throughthe bars of iron. ³ And I will give you the treasures of darkness, even treasures in secret places, that you may know that I am the LORD, who calls you by your name, the God of Israel.

² "Declare and proclaim among the nations. Lift up a banner and proclaim. Don't conceal anything. Say, 'Babylon will be captured. Bel will be disgraced, and Marduk will be destroyed. Her idols will be disgraced, and her filthy images will be destroyed.'

²⁵ "Look, I'm against you, destroying mountain, who destroys the whole earth," declares the LORD. "I'll stretch out my hand against you and roll you down from the crags. And I'll make you a burned-out mountain.

²⁷ Set ye up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come u ²⁸ Prepare the nations for holy war against her, the kings of the Medes, with their governors and all their officials, and every land of their dominion.

¹ In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia, to fulfil the word of the LORD from the mouth of Jeremiah, the LORD aroused the spirit of Cyrus, king of Persia, and he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, moreover also in writing, saying: ² "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he has commanded me to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. ³ Whosoever now among you is of his people, the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel. He is the God that is at Jerusalem. ⁴ And whoever remains in any place where he sojournes, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem. ⁵ Then the heads of fathers of Judah and Benjamin and the priests and the Levites, even all whose spirit God had stirred, rose up to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem. ⁶ And all of their neighbors helped them with objects of silver, gold, possessions, domestic animals, and with valuable gifts—besides all of the freewill offering. ⁷ Also king Cyrus brought forth the vessels of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought away out of Jerusalem, and had placed in the house of his god: ⁸ And Cyrus king of Persia brought them forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, who counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. ⁹ Here is a partial inventory: Gold dishes: 30 Silver dishes: 1,000 Sacrificial knives: 29 ¹⁰ There were also 30 gold bowls, 410 matching silver bowls and 1,000 other articles. ¹¹ All the articles of gold and silver numbered 5,400. Sheshbazzar brought all of them along with the exiles who traveled from Babylon to Jerusalem.

¹ Then king Darius gave orders, and they searched in the library of the books that were laid up in Babylon, ² A scroll was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of Media, and in it this was written for a record: ³ In the first year of king Cyrus, king Cyrus made a decree [concerning] the house of God at Jerusalem: Let the house be built for a place where they offer sacrifices, and let its foundations be solidly laid; its height sixty cubits, its breadth sixty cubits, ⁴ with three layers of great stones and a layer of timber. Let the new expenses be paid from the house of the king. ⁵ Also, let the gold and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylonia, be returned and brought to the temple in Jerusalem to its place. Put them in the house of God." ⁶ Now you, Tattenai viceroy Beyond-the Stream, Shethar-Bozenai, and you, their colleagues, the officials of Beyond-the-Stream, stay away from there. ⁷ let alone the work of this house of God, let the governor of the Jews, and the elders of the Jews, build this house of God on its place. ⁸ Moreover I make a decree what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the River, expenses must be given with all diligence to these men, that they not be hindered. ⁹ And that which they need, both young bulls and rams and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of Heaven; wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as say the priests in Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail, ¹⁰ so that they may offer sacrifices of sweet odor to the God of Heaven, and pray for the life of the king and of his sons. ¹¹ And I have given orders that if anyone makes any change in this word, one of the supports is to be pulled out of his house, and he is to be lifted up and fixed to it; and his house is to be made waste for this; ¹² May the God who has set his name there overthrow any king or people who sets his hand to alter or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I, Darius, issue forth a decree. Let it be done with diligence." ¹³ Because of what King Darius had mandated, Tattenai, the Trans-Euphrates Governor, Shethar-boznai, and their colleagues carried out his orders quickly. ¹⁴ So the elders of the Jews were building and prospering, through the prophecy of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished building by the command of the God of Israel and by the decree of Cyrus, Darius, and King Artaxerxes of Persia. ¹⁵ The temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar during the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. ¹⁶ And the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, and the rest of the returned exiles celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. ¹⁷ They offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁸ And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their separate orders, for the services of God in Jerusalem, according to the writing of the Book of Moses ¹⁹ On the fourteenth day of the first month the returned exiles observed the Passover feast. ²⁰ for the priests and the Levites, had purified themselves, as one man, all of them, were pure,—so they slaughtered the passover for all the Sons of the Exile, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. ²¹ So the Israelites who had returned from captivity ate the Passover with all who had consecrated themselves from the uncleanness of the nations of the land in order to seek the LORD God of Israel. ²² They joyfully kept the feast of unleavened bread for seven days. the LORD filled them with joy by turning the heart of the king of Assyria to them to give them help in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.

¹² Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven, all peace; ¹³ From me was rendered a decree, that all the ones willing in my kingdom from the people of Israel, and priests, and Levites, to go to Jerusalem—with you let them go! ¹⁴ For you are sent from the king and his seven counselors to enquire about Judah and Jerusalem concerning the law of your God, which is in your hand. ¹⁵ Also, bring the silver and gold that the king and his advisors have freely offered to the God of Israel whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, ¹⁶ together with all of the silver and gold that you can raise in the province of Babylon, plus the freewill offerings given by the people and the priests, contributed for the temple of their God, which is in Jerusalem. ¹⁷ »Use this money to buy bulls, sheep, and lambs, with their meal offerings and their drink offerings, to be offered on the altar of the house of your God, which is in Jerusalem. ¹⁸ And if it seem good to thee, and to thy brethren to do any thing with the rest of the silver and gold, do it according to the will of your God. ¹⁹ The vessels that are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver before the God of Jerusalem. ²⁰ Whatever more will be needed for the house of your God, which you may have occasion to give, give it out of the king's treasure house. ²¹ And I, Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers who are Beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven, shall ask of you, it shall be done exactly, ²² up to one hundred talents of silver, one hundred measures of wheat, one hundred baths of wine, one hundred baths of oil, and unlimited salt. ²³ "Whatever the God of heaven orders let it be done completely for the house of the God of heaven. Let there not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons. ²⁴ Also we inform you that it shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll, on any of the priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, or laborers of this house of God. ²⁵ And you, Ezra, in accordance with the wisdom given to you by your God, shall appoint magistrates and judges to administer justice to all the people beyond the Euphrates River. All of them are to know the laws of your God, and you are to instruct those who do not know them. ²⁶ Whoever refuses to practice the law of your God and the law of the king shall see judgment executed quickly, whether to death, banishment, confiscation of goods, or imprisonment.

² Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the sons of Zion be joyful in their King.

⁵ Let the saints rejoice in honor. Let them sing for joy on their beds. ⁶ May the high praises of God be in their mouths, and a two-edged sword in their hand, ⁷ to execute vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, ⁸ to bind their kings with fetters, and their nobles with manacles of iron; ⁹ to carry out on them the judgment written; this is an honor for all His saints. Praise the LORD!

¹¹ the LORD has stretched his hand over the sea to shake kingdoms. He has commanded that Canaan's fortifications be destroyed.

²⁷ who says to the deep, 'Be dry,' and 'I will dry up your rivers;' ²⁸ "'I say of Cyrus: 'He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please. He will say of Jerusalem, 'Let it be rebuilt,' and of the Temple, 'Let its foundations be laid.'"

⁴ "For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen one, I have called you by name. I have given you a title of honor, although you do not know me. ⁵ I am the LORD, and there is no other. Besides me, there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me;

²¹ "Attack the land of Merathaim and the people who live in Pekod. Claim them for me by killing them with a sword, says the LORD. Do everything I commanded you. ²² A noise of battle [is] in the land, and of great destruction." ²³ How s cut and broken the hammer of all the earth! How hath Babylon become an astonishment among the nations! ²⁴ "I will set traps for you, Babylon. You will be caught, but you will not know it. You will be found and captured because you have opposed the LORD." ²⁵ the LORD will open his armory and bring out the weapons of his fury, because the LORD Almighty has a job to do in the land of the Babylonians. ²⁶ "Come to her from afar. Open up her barns. Pile her up like heaps of grain, and completely destroy her. Don't leave any survivors. ²⁷ Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their punishment. ²⁸ Fugitives and refugees from Babylon are coming to Zion to tell about the vengeance of the LORD our God, the vengeance for his temple. ²⁹ "Summon many to Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Camp all around her, let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds. Do to her just as she has done. For she has behaved arrogantly against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel. ³⁰ Therefore, her warriors will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day," declares the LORD. ³¹ "Look, I am against you, O arrogant one," declares Sovereign LORD Almighty, "for your day has come, the time when I will punish you. ³² The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will raise him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all who are around him.” ³³ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah likewise, for all their captors have seized them, they refuse to let them go free. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD Almighty, is His name. He shall thoroughly plead their cause, so that he may give rest to the land, and give trouble to the people of Babylon. ³⁵ A sword against the Chaldeans," declares the LORD, "and against the inhabitants of Babylon, against her officials and her wise men. ³⁶ A sword against the oracle priests, and they will become foolish. A sword against her warriors, and they will be filled with terror. ³⁷ A sword against her horses, against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst. They'll become women. A sword against her treasures. They'll be plundered. ³⁸ A drought is on her waters; and they shall be dried up. For it is the land of idols, and they act madly with idols. ³⁹ "That is why desert animals will live with hyenas. Desert owls will also live there. It will no longer be inhabited or lived in for generations. ⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, states the LORD, so no man shall live there, nor shall a son of man stay in it. ⁴¹ "Look, people are coming from the north. A great nation and many kings will be stirred up from the ends of the earth. ⁴² They grab bow and spear. They're cruel and show no mercy. Their sound roars like the sea, as they ride on horses deployed like men ready for battle against you, daughter of Babylon. ⁴³ The king of Babylon has heard the news about them, and his hands hang limp. Distress has seized him, like a woman in labor. ⁴⁴ Behold he will be like the lion which must go up from the swelling of Jordan to Gaitham, for I will speedily drive men from her, and set every youth against her: for who is like me and who can withstand me? And who is the shepherd who can stand before me? ⁴⁵ Listen to what the LORD is going to do against Babylon and the things he intends to do to the land of the Babylonians. He will surely drag away the little ones of the flock. He will surely destroy the pasture because of the Babylonians. ⁴⁶ At the sound of Babylon's capture, the earth shall tremble, and a cry is heard among the nations.

²⁰ You are My war club and weapons of war, for with you I will shatter nations and with you I will destroy kingdoms. ²¹ and with you, I shatter the horse and his rider; and with you, I shatter the chariot and his rider; ²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin; ²³ I'll smash the shepherd and his flock with you. I'll smash the farmer and his team of oxen with you. I'll smash governors and officials with you. ²⁴ "Before your eyes I'll repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they did in Zion," declares the LORD.

¹¹ Hurry and come, all the nations, from all around, and gather yourselves there. Bring down your mighty warriors, O LORD!

⁴ Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues. ⁵ For her sins are piled up to the sky, and God has remembered her crimes. ⁶ Give back to her as she has done to others; pay her back double for what she has done; mix her a double portion in her own cup. ⁷ give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow." ⁸ Therefore in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets; for God has judged her for what she did to you.

⁵ Wo to Assur the rod of mine anger, and that rod in their hand, my wrath. ⁶ "I send him against a godless nation. I commission him against the people of my fury to capture booty and to seize plunder, and to trample them down like mud (clay) in the streets.

¹ The burden concerning the valley of vision. What ails you now, that you are wholly gone up to the housetops? ² You are a town full of commotion, a city of tumult and revelry. The sword did not kill your slain, nor did they die in battle. ³ All your leaders have fled together. They have been captured without using the bow. All you who were caught were taken prisoner together. You fled while the enemy was still far away. ⁴ I said: "Turn away from me. Let me weep bitterly. Do not try to console me over the destruction of my people." ⁵ The Sovereign LORD Almighty has a day of tumult, trampling and terror in the Valley of Vision. It is a day of battering down walls and of crying out to the mountains. ⁶ Elam takes up the quiver, with her charioteers and horses. Kir uncovers the shield. ⁷ Your choicest valleys are full of chariots, and horsemen are posted at the city gates. ⁸ The defenses of Judah are stripped away. And you looked in that day to the weapons in the house of the forest. ⁹ You saw that the City of David had many breaches in its defenses. You stored up water in the lower pool.

¹⁴ Deploy the troops all around Babylon. All who bend the bow, shoot at her and spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the LORD. ¹⁵ Shout against her all around: she has submitted herself; her towers are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of the LORD: take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her.

⁶ Flee from Babylon, and each of you, escape with your life! Don't be destroyed because of her guilt, for it's time for the LORD's vengeance. He is paying back what is due to her. ⁷ Babylon was a golden cup in the LORD's hand, making the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine, therefore the nations have gone mad. ⁸ Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed. Wail for her. Take balm for her pain, perhaps she may be healed. ⁹ “We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed. Forsake her, and let's each go into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. ¹⁰ The LORD will vindicate us. Come! Let us declare the work of the LORD our God in Zion. ¹¹ Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes he has decided to destroy Babylon. Indeed, it's the LORD's vengeance, vengeance for his temple. ¹² Set up the banner on the walls of Babylon; make the watch strong; set up the watchmen; prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both planned and done that which He spoke against the people of Babylon. ¹³ O you who live by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your unjust gain. ¹⁴ the LORD Almighty has sworn by Himself, saying, Surely I will fill you with men as with locusts; and they shall lift up a shout against you. ¹⁵ He that made the earth by his power, that hath prepared the world by his wisdom, and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. ¹⁶ When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens. He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses. ¹⁷ Everyone is stupid and without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his own idols, for his images are false, and there is no life in them. ¹⁸ They're worthless, a work of mockery, and when the time of punishment comes, they'll perish. ¹⁹ The portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the former of all things; including the tribe of his inheritance: the LORD of Armies is his name. ²⁰ You are My war club and weapons of war, for with you I will shatter nations and with you I will destroy kingdoms. ²¹ and with you, I shatter the horse and his rider; and with you, I shatter the chariot and his rider; ²² and with you, I shatter man and woman; and with you, I shatter aged and lad; and with you, I shatter the youth and the virgin; ²³ I'll smash the shepherd and his flock with you. I'll smash the farmer and his team of oxen with you. I'll smash governors and officials with you. ²⁴ "Before your eyes I'll repay Babylon and all the inhabitants of Chaldea for all the evil that they did in Zion," declares the LORD. ²⁵ "Look, I'm against you, destroying mountain, who destroys the whole earth," declares the LORD. "I'll stretch out my hand against you and roll you down from the crags. And I'll make you a burned-out mountain.

³ and say, Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Behold, I am against you, Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. ⁴ I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and will bring you out with all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armour, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them handling swords; ⁵ Persia, Cush, and Put shall be with them; all of them with shield and helmet; ⁶ "Gomer with all its troops; Beth-togarmah from the remote parts of the north with all its troops and many peoples with you." ⁷ Be ready, make yourself ready, you and all the forces who are with you, and be ready for my orders. ⁸ "'"After many days you will be summoned. In the latter years you will come into the land that is restored from the sword, whose inhabitants have been gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel that had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the nations, and all of them are living securely. ⁹ '"You will go up like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land. You your troops will have many peoples with you."' ¹⁰ " 'Thus says the Sovereign LORD: "And then on that day, things will come up on your mind, and you will devise evil plans. ¹¹ ""You will say: "I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are securely at rest. They live without walls and have no bars or gates." ¹² to loot loot, and to plunder plunder, ⌊to assail⌋ inhabited ruins and a people gathered together from various peoples and who are acquiring livestock and goods and dwelling at the center of the world. ¹³ Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all its villages, shall say unto you, Have you come to take plunder? have you gathered your company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil? ¹⁴ “Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and tell Gog, 'The Sovereign LORD says: “In that day when my people Israel dwells securely, will you not know it? ¹⁵ "'You will come from your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly and a mighty army. ¹⁶ and you will advance against my people Israel like a cloud covering the land; it will be in the last days, and I will bring you against my land, so that the nations know me, when I show myself holy through you before their eyes, O Gog!" ' ¹⁷ “'The Sovereign LORD says: “Are you he of whom I spoke in old time by my servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for years that I would bring you against them? ¹⁸ And it shall be on that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel, says the Sovereign LORD, My fury shall come up in My face. ¹⁹ "'In my zeal and in my blazing wrath I proclaim that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. ²⁰ "'The fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the people who are on the face of the earth will shake at my presence! The mountains will be thrown down! The steep pathways will collapse and every wall will fall to the ground.' ²¹ "'I will call for a sword against Gog on all my mountains,' declares the Sovereign LORD. 'Every man's sword will be against his brother. ²² And I will execute judgment on him, with pestilence and blood and with tempests of rain and hailstones; and I will rain down fire and brimstone on him, and on all with him, even on the many nations with him. ²³ And I will magnify myself and sanctify myself and I will make myself known in the eyes of many nations. And they will know that I am the LORD.

¹ Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming —it is indeed near. ² A day of darkness and gloom, a day of cloud and thick darkness, like the dawn spreads on the mountains, a great and strong army! There has been nothing like it from old, and after it nothing will be again for generations to come. ³ A fire devoureth before them, and behind them a flame blazeth; the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing escapeth them. ⁴ Their form is like the form of horses, and they are running like war-horses. ⁵ As the noise of chariots, on the tops of the mountains they skip, As the noise of a flame of fire devouring stubble, As a mighty people set in array for battle. ⁶ Before them the peoples are in anguish: all faces turn pale. ⁷ They run like mighty men, they climb the wall like warriors. They each march in his line, and they don't swerve off course. ⁸ "They do not crowd each other. They march every one in his path. They burst through the weapons and do not break ranks. ⁹ "They rush to the city. They run on the wall. They climb into the houses. ²⁵ "Then I will restore to you the years that the locust swarm devoured, as did the young locust, the other locusts, and the ravaging locust, that great army of mine that I sent among you.

¹⁴ Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision. For the day of the LORD is near, in the valley of decision.

¹ Behold, a day of the LORD comes, when your plunder will be divided within you. ² I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem, to lay siege against it. The city will be captured, the houses will be ransacked, the women raped, and half of the city will go into exile, but the remaining people will not be cut off from the city. ³ Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

¹³ At that time they will be stricken with a terrible panic from the LORD. Everyone will attack each other. ¹⁴ Judah also will fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be gathered together: gold, and silver, and clothing, in great abundance.

⁷ The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were victor's crowns that looked like gold, and their faces were like human faces. ⁸ their hair was like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. ⁹ They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. ¹⁰ They had tails and stings like scorpions; it was in their tails that their power lay to harm men for five months. ¹¹ They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon. ¹² The first woe is past. See! Two other woes are yet to come. ¹³ The sixth angel sounded his trumpet and I heard a voice from the horns of the golden altar before God ¹⁴ It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates. ¹⁵ And the four angels, who had been held ready for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. ¹⁶ And the number of the mounted troops was a hundred million (I heard their number). ¹⁷ I saw the horses and riders in the vision. Their breastplates were bright red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses were like the heads of lions. Their mouths issued fire, smoke, and brimstone. ¹⁸ A third of mankind was killed by these plagues of fire and smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths. ¹⁹ For the power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like serpents, having heads, and with them they did injury.

⁸ Therefore in one day her plagues will come, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

¹¹ Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me was a white horse. And its rider is called Faithful and True. With righteousness He judges and wages war. ¹² His eyes are a flame of fire, and on his head are many crowns. He had a name written which no one knows but he himself. ¹³ He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is The Word of God. ¹⁴ The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses, and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. ¹⁵ And from His mouth proceeds a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God, the Almighty. ¹⁶ and on his robe and on his thigh he has this name written-- 'KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.' ¹⁷ Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out in a loud voice to all the birds flying overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, ¹⁸ so that you may eat the flesh of kings and commanders and mighty men, of horses and riders, of all men slave and free, small and great.” ¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. ²⁰ But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed signs on his behalf, by which he deceived those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. ²¹ The rest were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of him who sat on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves upon their bodies.

¹⁷ Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes; who will not regard silver, and who will not delight in gold.

¹ the LORD lays the earth waste, annihilates it, disfigures its surface and scatters its inhabitants.

³ For a nation from the north will go up against her. It will make her land into an object of horror, and no one will live in it. Both people and animals will wander off, and they'll leave.

⁹ Indeed, I'm going to stir up and bring against Babylon a great company of nations from the land of the north. They'll deploy for battle against her, and from there she will be captured. Their arrows will be like a skilled warrior; they won't miss their targets.

¹¹ Sharpen the arrows, fill the quivers! The LORD has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes he has decided to destroy Babylon. Indeed, it's the LORD's vengeance, vengeance for his temple.

Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come u ²⁸ Prepare the nations for holy war against her, the kings of the Medes, with their governors and all their officials, and every land of their dominion. ²⁹ The land quakes and writhes because the LORD's purposes against Babylon stand firm, to make the land of Babylon a waste without inhabitants. ³⁰ The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting. They stay in their strongholds; their strength is dried up; they have become like women. Her buildings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken. ³¹ Runners run to meet runners. Messengers follow messengers. They inform the king of Babylon that his entire city is captured. ³² the fords occupied; the fens burnt up; and the soldiers sore afraid. ³³ For thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, "The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trodden down, just a little while and the time of the harvest will come for her." ³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out. ³⁵ May the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon," says the inhabitant of Zion. "May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea," says Jerusalem. ³⁶ Therefore thus said the LORD; Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry. ³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants. ³⁸ They'll roar together like young lions; they'll growl like lion cubs. ³⁹ When they're excited I'll serve them their banquet, and make them drunk until they're merry. They'll sleep forever and won't wake up," declares the LORD. ⁴⁰ I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he-goats. ⁴¹ How Sheshach is taken, and the praise of the whole earth seized! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations! ⁴² The sea came up against Babylon with its roaring waves, and she is overwhelmed. ⁴³ Her towns have become a waste, a dry and unwatered land, where no man has his living-place and no son of man goes by. ⁴⁴ I'll punish Bel in Babylon, and I'll make what he has swallowed come out of his mouth. The nations will no longer stream to him. Even the wall of Babylon will fall. ⁴⁵ »Get out of her, my people! Run for your lives! Run from the burning anger of the LORD. ⁴⁶ "Do not lose courage or be afraid when rumors are heard in the land. One rumor comes one year; another rumor comes the next year. Rumors of violence are in the land. Rumors that one ruler will fight against another are in the land.

³¹ And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power.

¹² For the day of the LORD Almighty shall be on all the proud and lofty ones, and on all that is lifted up; and it will be abased;

⁹ Look, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy its sinners out of it.

³¹ Wail, gate! Cry, city! Melt, Philistia, all of you! For smoke is coming from the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.

¹ Wail, O ships of Tarshish! For Tyre is destroyed and left without house or harbor. From the land of Cyprus (Kittim) word has come to them.

⁸ For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution for the strife of Zion.

⁵ "What do I have here?" Declares the LORD. "For my people have been taken away for nothing. Those who rule them mock," declares the LORD. "And all day long my name is constantly blasphemed.

¹⁴ My servants will sing out of the joy of their hearts, but you will cry out from anguish of heart and wail in brokenness of spirit.

³⁴ »Mourn, you shepherds, and cry. Roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. The time has come for you to be slaughtered. The time has come for you to be scattered, and you will break like fine pottery.

³ "Wail, Heshbon, because Ai is destroyed. Cry out, daughters of Rabbah, put on sackcloth and lament. Run back and forth inside the walls, for Milcom is going into exile along with his priests and his princes.

⁸ Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed. Wail for her. Take balm for her pain, perhaps she may be healed.

¹² Cry and wail, son of man, for it is against my people; it is against all of the princes of Israel. They are thrown to the sword with my people; therefore strike your thigh.

² Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus says the Sovereign LORD: Wail, Alas for the day! ³ For the day is near, the day of the Lord is near, a day of cloud; it will be the time of the nations.

⁵ Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.

¹¹ Be ashamed, O you farmers; wail, O you vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field has perished.

¹³ Gird yourselves, and lament, you priests: wail, you ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God: for the grain offering and the drink offering is withheld from the house of your God.

¹⁵ Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is at hand and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

¹¹ The LORD thunders his voice before his army; for his forces are very great; for he is strong who obeys his command; for the day of the LORD is great and very awesome, and who can endure it?

³¹ The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.

¹⁸ "Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD. Why do you long for the day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light.

⁷ Be silent before the Sovereign Sovereign LORD! For the day of the LORD is near! the LORD has prepared a sacrifice. He has sanctified His guests.

¹⁴ The great day of the LORD draws near; it is near and coming very swiftly. The sound of the day of the LORD is bitterness; there, a warrior cries out!

² before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD comes on you, before the day of the LORD's anger comes on you. ³ seek the LORD, all you humble people of the land, who do what he commands. Seek righteousness! Seek humility! Maybe you will be protected in the day of the LORD's anger."

⁵ Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and fearful day of the LORD comes.

² for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. ³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

¹ Come on now, you rich people, cry and wail over the miseries that are coming upon you.

¹⁰ for fear of her torture they will stand far off, crying, 'Woe and alas, thou great city! thou strong city of Babylon! In one brief hour thy doom has come.'

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the leaders of Moab were seized by trembling; all the dwellers of Canaan were melted.

³ What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth? ⁴ so as not to kneel with the prisoners, or fall among the slain? For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

²⁷ "Their people are drained of power. They are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, parched before it grows.

²⁰ Your sons have fainted. They lie at the head of every street. They are like antelope caught in a net. They are filled with the rage of the LORD and the rebuke of your God.

⁴³ The king of Babylon has heard the news about them, and his hands hang limp. Distress has seized him, like a woman in labor.

¹⁷ All hands will be feeble, and all knees will be weak as water.

⁷ It shall be, when they tell you, 'Why do you sigh?' that you shall say, Because of the news, for it is coming. Every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, every spirit shall faint and all knees shall be weak as water. It is coming, and it shall be done, says the Sovereign LORD.

⁶ His indignation—who can stand before it? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; rocks are shattered before him.

¹⁰ She is empty, void, and waste. The heart melts, the knees knock together, their bodies and faces have grown pale.

⁵ (48:4)For lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together. ⁶ Trembling seized them there, pains like those of a woman in labor,

³ So my loins fill with pain: pangs hold me as pangs of a woman birthing: I twist at hearing; I terrify at seeing: ⁴ My heart failed, darkness amazed me: Babylon my beloved is become a wonder to me.

¹⁷ Like a woman with child and about to give birth struggles and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD.

³¹ I heard a cry like that of a woman in labor, anguish like one giving birth to her first born, the cry of the daughter of Zion gasping for air, stretching out her hand: "Woe is me! I'm about to faint in front of killers!"

⁶ Ask ye, and see if a man bear children? why then have I seen every man with his hands on his loins, like a woman in labour, and all faces are turned yellow?

⁵ In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared, and wrote above the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote. ⁶ Then his face changed and his thoughts terrified him, and his hip joints gave way and his knees knocked together.

⁶ Before them the peoples are in anguish: all faces turn pale.

²¹ A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.

³ While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

³⁵ Let the sinners perish from the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD!

²² But the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

⁶ Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from Shaddai!

¹⁵ "All who are found will be pierced through. All who are captured will fall by the sword. ¹⁶ Their infants also will be dashed in pieces before their eyes. Their houses will be rifled and their wives ravished. ¹⁷ Behold, I will stir up against them the Medes; who will not regard silver, and who will not delight in gold. ¹⁸ "And their bows will mow down the young men. Their sound roars like the sea as they ride on horses, deployed like men ready for battle against you, daughter of Zion."

⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, states the LORD, so no man shall live there, nor shall a son of man stay in it. ⁴¹ "Look, people are coming from the north. A great nation and many kings will be stirred up from the ends of the earth. ⁴² They grab bow and spear. They're cruel and show no mercy. Now leave! Do not just stand there. Remember the LORD in a distant land and think about Jerusalem. ⁵¹ We have been put to shame. We have been disgraced. Shame covers our faces, because foreigners have gone into the holy places of the LORD's temple. ⁵² "Therefore, look, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I'll punish her idols, and throughout her land the wounded will groan. ⁵³ "Though Babylon should reach up to the heavens and fortify her high fortresses, from me destroyers will come to her," declares the LORD. ⁵⁴ “The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans! ⁵⁵ For the LORD is devastating Babylon, and he obliterates her loud noise from her. Their waves roar like mighty waters, the roar of their voices resounds. ⁵⁶ Indeed, the destroyer is coming against her, against Babylon. Her warriors are captured, and her bows are broken. For the LORD is a God of recompense, and he will repay in full. ⁵⁷ "I will make their officials and wise men drunk, along with their governors, officers, and soldiers. They will fall into a deep sleep and never wake up," proclaims the king, whose name is the LORD Almighty. ⁵⁸ This is what the LORD Almighty says: The thick walls of Babylon will be leveled, and its high gates will be set on fire. People exhaust themselves for nothing. The nations wear themselves out only to have a fire.

² The LORD is a jealous God and avenges. The LORD avenges and is full of wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he maintains wrath against his enemies.

¹ "For look! The day is about to come, burning like an oven, and all the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The coming day will consume them," says the LORD of hosts. "It will not leave behind for them root or branch.

¹⁶ The ten horns and the beast you saw will hate the prostitute. They will leave her abandoned and naked. They will eat her flesh and burn her up with fire, ¹⁷ For God has put in their hearts to accomplish his purpose, by agreeing to give their sovereignty to the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.

³⁰ And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea; when one looks to the land, and lo, darkness! Distress! And light shall be darkened by its clouds.

²¹ That day the LORD will punish the host of heaven on high and the kings of the earth below.

²³ Then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed, For the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, And his glory will be before his elders.

⁷ "'When I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon will not give its light. ⁸ "'All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you. And I will set darkness on your land,' proclaims the Sovereign LORD.

¹⁰ Before them the earth quaketh, the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are become black, and the stars withdraw their shining.

¹⁵ The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will stop shining.

⁹ And then in that day," declares my Sovereign LORD, "I will make the sun go down at noon and I will darken the land on a day of light. ¹⁰ I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all of your songs to dirges. I will cause all of you to put on sackcloth and to shave all of your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son, and its conclusion will be like the end of a bitter day."

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, ¹⁶ a day of trumpet and a cry against the fortified cities, and against the high corners.

²⁹ "Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give her light, and the stars will fall from heaven and the powers of heaven will be shaken.

²⁴ But in those days, after that distress, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give her light;

²⁵ “There will be signs in sun, moon, and stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, at the roaring and tossing of the sea;

¹² And I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake, the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon turned the colour of blood. ¹³ And the stars in the sky fell to earth, like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a strong wind. ¹⁴ The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.

¹² The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them darkened. And a third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the pride of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹⁷ And every man shall be brought low, and the pride of men shall fall: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹⁵ So man is brought low, mankind is humbled, and the eyes of the arrogant ones are humbled;

⁴ but with righteousness he will judge the poor, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.

¹² How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn. How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low. ¹³ You said in your heart, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north. ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High." ¹⁵ But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the pit. ¹⁶ Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, "Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms;

²¹ prepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the World with wars.

⁴ The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the high people of the earth languish: ⁵ The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant. ⁶ Therefore a curse devours the earth, and the inhabitants in it suffer for their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth burn, and few men are left.

²¹ Behold! the LORD is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose (reveal) the bloodshed upon her. She will conceal her slain no longer.

²⁹ "Summon many to Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Camp all around her, let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds. Do to her just as she has done. For she has behaved arrogantly against the Lord, against the Holy One of Israel. ³⁰ Therefore, her warriors will fall in her streets, and all her soldiers will be silenced on that day," declares the LORD. ³¹ "Look, I am against you, O arrogant one," declares Sovereign LORD Almighty, "for your day has come, the time when I will punish you. ³² The proud one will stumble and fall, and no one will raise him up. I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all who are around him.”

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me. He has crushed me. He has made me an empty vessel. He has, like a monster, swallowed me up. He has filled his stomach with my delicacies. He has cast me out. ³⁵ May the violence done to me and my flesh be on Babylon," says the inhabitant of Zion. "May my blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea," says Jerusalem. ³⁶ Therefore thus said the LORD; Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry. ³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants. ³⁸ They'll roar together like young lions; they'll growl like lion cubs.

²² And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this. ²³ You've exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. You've had the vessels from his temple brought into your presence. And you, your officials, and your wives and mistresses drank wine from them. You praised gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which can't see, hear, or demonstrate knowledge. But you didn't honor God, who holds in his power your very life and all your ways.

⁹ And the great dragon was hurled down—the ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying: Now has come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren, he that accused them before our God day and night, is cast down.

² And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every unclean spirit, a haunt of every unclean and hateful bird. ³ For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her adulteries, and the kings of the earth have committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich with her excessive luxuries.

¹⁶ "It cannot be bought with the gold from Ophir or with precious onyx or sapphire.

⁹ Blessed is he who seizes your little ones and dashes them against the stone!

¹ And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, we will eat our own bread and wear our own clothing; only let us be called by your name, to take away our shame.

⁵ The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of his wrath. ⁶ He will judge among the nations. He will heap up dead bodies. He will crush the ruler of the whole earth.

⁴ And all the powers of the heavens shall melt, and the sky shall be rolled up like a scroll; and all the stars shall fall like leaves from a vine, and as leaves fall from a fig tree.

⁶ "Lift up your eyes to the heavens. Look at the earth below. The heavens will vanish like smoke and the earth will wear out like a garment. Its inhabitants die like flies (gnats). But my salvation will last forever! My righteousness will never fail.

²³ I looked at the earth, and it was formless and void, at the heavens, and there was no light there. ²⁴ I looked on the mountains, and, lo, they quaked; and all the hills were shaken.

¹² Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look, and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which is brought on me, with which the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.

¹⁶ the LORD will roar from Zion, and thunder from Jerusalem; the heavens and the earth will shake, but the LORD will be a refuge for His people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel.

⁴ He rebukes the sea and he dries up the rivers; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither; the blossom of Lebanon languishes. ⁵ The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it. ⁶ His indignation—who can stand before it? Who can endure his fierce anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; rocks are shattered before him.

⁶ For this is what the LORD of Armies says: 'Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land; ⁷ And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts.

²¹ "Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, 'I will shake the heavens and the earth. ²² and I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the military strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, every one by the sword of another!

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

²⁶ At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also heaven." ²⁷ The words, “Once more,” signify the removal of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that the unshakable may remain.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be dissolved in the fire, and the earth and its works will not be found.

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne, and him who was seated on it. 'The earth and the heavens fled from his presence; no place was left for them.'

¹⁷ Micaiah answered: "I can see the army of Israel scattered over the hills like sheep without a shepherd." the LORD said: "These men have no leader. Let them go home in peace."

³⁶ Then the shout passed through the camp about sunset, saying, "Each man to his city and each to his land!"

¹³ The nations roar like the roar of many waters, but he will rebuke him, and he will flee far away. And they are chased like chaff of the mountains before the wind and like tumbleweed before the storm.

¹⁵ "That is all they can do for you, these you have labored with and trafficked with since childhood. Each of them goes on in his error. No one can save you.

¹⁶ Cut off the sower from Babylon, and the one who uses the sickle in the time of harvest. Because of the sword of the oppressor each one will turn to their people, and each one will flee to their land.

⁹ “We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed. Forsake her, and let's each go into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

⁹ "The kings of the earth who have committed lewdness with her and have reveled luxuriously, when they see the smoke of her burning, will wail and beat their breasts. ¹⁰ for fear of her torture they will stand far off, crying, 'Woe and alas, thou great city! thou strong city of Babylon! In one brief hour thy doom has come.'

¹⁹ But you are thrown from your grave like a despised branch, like the covering of the slain, those pierced by the sword, those who go down into the stones of the Pit, like a dead body trampled under foot. ²⁰ You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be mentioned forever. ²¹ prepare thy sons for slaughter, for the sins of their fathers; that they may not rise and possess the land, and fill the World with wars. ²² For I will rise up against them, says the LORD Almighty, and cut off from Babylon the name and remnant, and son, and grandson, says the LORD.

⁹ »Two things will come on you suddenly in one day: Loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in full measure in spite of your abundance of sorceries, in spite of the great power of your spells. ¹⁰ For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, 'No one sees me.' Your wisdom and your knowledge has perverted you. You have said in your heart, 'I am, and there is no one else besides me.' ¹¹ Yet shall evil came upon thee; thou shalt not know how to charm it away; and calamity shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it away; and ruin shall come upon thee suddenly, before thou knowest. ¹² Stand now among your spells, and with your many sorceries, in which you have wearied yourself since your youth. Perhaps you will be able to profit; perhaps may cause quaking. ¹³ You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the knowers from the new moons, stand up and save you from the things that will come upon you. ¹⁴ "Surely they are like stubble. The fire will burn them up. They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame. Here are no coals to warm anyone and no fire to sit by.

²⁵ the LORD will open his armory and bring out the weapons of his fury, because the LORD Almighty has a job to do in the land of the Babylonians.

²⁷ Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them! For their day has come, the time of their punishment.

³⁵ A sword against the Chaldeans," declares the LORD, "and against the inhabitants of Babylon, against her officials and her wise men. ³⁶ A sword against the oracle priests, and they will become foolish. A sword against her warriors, and they will be filled with terror. ³⁷ A sword against her horses, against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst. They'll become women. A sword against her treasures. They'll be plundered. ³⁸ A drought is on her waters; and they shall be dried up. For it is the land of idols, and they act madly with idols. ³⁹ "That is why desert animals will live with hyenas. Desert owls will also live there. It will no longer be inhabited or lived in for generations.

³ Don't let the archer bend the bow; don't let him rise up in his armor. Don't spare her young men. Completely destroy her entire army. ⁴ They will fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets.

⁸ Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, he will be happy who repays you, as you have done to us. ⁹ Blessed is he who seizes your little ones and dashes them against the stone!

¹⁸ "And their bows will mow down the young men. They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb. Nor will they have compassion on children.

¹¹ Women have they ravished in Zion, virgins, in the cities of Judah.

¹⁴ The tumult of war will rise up against your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel; on the day of war mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.

¹⁰ Yet she was carried away. She went into captivity. Her young sons also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets. And they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

² I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem, to lay siege against it. The city will be captured, the houses will be ransacked, the women raped, and half of the city will go into exile, but the remaining people will not be cut off from the city.

³⁴ because jealousy incites a strong man's rage, and he will show no mercy when it's time for revenge. ³⁵ He will not accept any compensation, and he will not be willing, though the bribe is large.

³ I have commanded My holy ones; I have also called My warriors for My anger, those who rejoice in My highness. ⁴ A sound, a noise is on the mountains, the likeness of many people! A sound of the roar of the kingdoms, of nations gathering! the LORD Almighty is mustering an army for battle. ⁵ They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the LORD and the weapons of His wrath, to destroy all the land.

² A harsh vision is revealed to me; the deceiver deceives, and the plunderer plunders. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media! I have caused all her sighing to cease.

²⁵ "I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes! One from the rising sun calls on my name. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.

²⁸ Peres; your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then Belshazzar gave orders to clothe Daniel in purple, to place a chain of gold around his neck, and to proclaimed him the third highest ruler of the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans is slain, ³¹ and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom at the age of 62.

¹² "Why are you crying, sir?" Hazael asked. "Because I know the evil that you're about to bring on the Israelites," he replied. "You'll burn down their fortified cities, execute their young men with swords, dash to pieces their little ones, and you'll tear open their pregnant women!"

¹⁷ And he brought up [against] them the king of the Chaldees, and slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and spared not young man nor maiden, old man nor him of hoary head: he gave [them] all into his hand.

¹⁶ Their infants also will be dashed in pieces before their eyes. Their houses will be rifled and their wives ravished.

⁵ I heard God say to the other men: "Follow him through the city and kill. Spare no one! Have mercy on no one. ⁶ Slay utterly old man and youth, and virgin, and infants, and women: but go ye not nigh any on whom is the mark: begin at my sanctuary. So they began with the elder men who were within in the house.

¹⁰ And I also, Mine eye does not pity, nor do I spare; their way on their own head I have put.'"

¹⁶ Samaria will be guilty, because she has rebelled against her God; they will fall by the sword, their children will be dashed to pieces, and their pregnant women will be ripped open.

¹ One who shatters has come up against you! Guard the fortification! Watch the road! Gird your loins! Muster all your strength!

²⁴ And the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.

²³ [that] the whole land of it is brimstone, and salt, [and] a burning, [that] it is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which LORD overthrew in his anger, and i

⁴ that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, "How the oppressor has ceased. How the attacker has ceased." ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, ⁶ He whose rod was on the peoples with an unending wrath, ruling the nations in passion, with an uncontrolled rule.

¹⁸ Just like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says the LORD, "no one will live there. No human being will reside in it.

⁴⁰ As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, states the LORD, so no man shall live there, nor shall a son of man stay in it.

⁴¹ How Sheshach is taken, and the praise of the whole earth seized! How Babylon has become a desolation among the nations!

³⁷ You, O king, are a king of kings: for the God of heaven has given you a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. ³⁸ »He gave the children of men, the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens to your hand. He made you the ruler over them all! You are the head of gold.

³⁰ The king spoke: "Is this not great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?"

¹¹ "I overthrew your cities, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You've become like a burning ember, snatched from the fire, but you have not returned to me," declares the LORD.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the Ammonites like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."

¹¹ And the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and tribute of silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred he goats.

²³ "And I will make her a possession of the hedgehog, and pools of water, and I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction," declares the LORD Almighty.

¹⁰ It won’t be quenched night or day. Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation, it will lie waste. No one will pass through it forever and ever. ¹¹ but the pelican and the porcupine will possess it, the owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness. ¹² As for her nobles, none shall be there to be called to the kingdom; and all her princes shall be nothing. ¹³ Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches. ¹⁴ And the wildcats will meet with the hyenas, and the wild goat will cry to his fellow. There too, nocturnal animals shall settle, and shall find themselves a place of rest. ¹⁵ The snake shall nest there, and shall lay, and hatch, and shall gather in her shadow. Vultures shall also be gathered together, each with its mate.

¹³ Because of the anger of the LORD she won't be inhabited, but will be utterly devastated. Everyone who passes by Babylon will be horrified and will scoff because of all her wounds.

²¹ "Attack the land of Merathaim and the people who live in Pekod. Claim them for me by killing them with a sword, says the LORD. Do everything I commanded you.

³⁹ "That is why desert animals will live with hyenas. Desert owls will also live there. It will no longer be inhabited or lived in for generations.

⁴⁵ Listen to what the LORD is going to do against Babylon and the things he intends to do to the land of the Babylonians. He will surely drag away the little ones of the flock. He will surely destroy the pasture because of the Babylonians.

²⁹ The land quakes and writhes because the LORD's purposes against Babylon stand firm, to make the land of Babylon a waste without inhabitants.

³⁷ "Babylon will become a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and hissing, without inhabitants.

⁴³ Her towns have become a waste, a dry and unwatered land, where no man has his living-place and no son of man goes by.

²¹ Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying: “With such violence the great city of Babylon will be cast down, never to be seen again. ²² The sound of harpists and musicians, flute-players, and trumpets will never be heard in you again. No craftsman of any kind will ever be found in you again, no sound of the millstone will ever be heard in you again; ²³ The light of a lamp will never more shine in you. The voices of bridegroom and bride will never again be heard in you. Your merchants were the great ones of the earth; for by your magic arts all the nations were led astray.

² And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every unclean spirit, a haunt of every unclean and hateful bird.

³⁵ Vengeance is mine, I will repay, at the time when their foot slides; for the day of their calamity is near, and the things to come hasten upon them."

² You have made the city a heap, the mighty city a ruin. The palace of aliens is a city no more. It will never be rebuilt.

¹³ Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches.

⁷ And the glowing sand will become a pool and the thirsty ground springs of water. In the habitation of jackals, where they lay, will be grass with reeds and rushes.

³³ For thus says the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, "The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trodden down, just a little while and the time of the harvest will come for her."

⁷ '"Doom has come upon you who dwell in the land. The time has come, the day is near. There is panic, not joy, upon the mountains. ⁸ '"I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices. ⁹ '"I will not look on you with pity or spare you (my eye will not feel sorry for you). I will repay you in accordance with your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that it is I, the LORD, who strikes the blow. ¹⁰ '"The day is here! It has come! Doom has burst forth. The rod has budded, and arrogance has blossomed!

³ For the vision is still for an appointed time, but it speaks to the end, and it does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it; because it will surely come. It will not tarry.

³ And in their greed they will exploit you with false words; from long ago their condemnation has not been idle, and their destruction has not been asleep.

⁹ The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. ¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be dissolved in the fire, and the earth and its works will not be found.
