1 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?” 2 And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 'Leave your country and your kindred, and come into the country that I will show you.' 4 So he left the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. Then after the death of his father, God had him move to this country where you now live. 5 He gave him no inheritance here, not even a foot of ground. But God promised to give possession of the land to Abraham and his descendants, even though he did not yet have a child. 6 God spoke thus, 'His descendants will sojourn in a land not their own, and they will be enslaved and maltreated four hundred years.' 7 ‘But I will punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come forth and worship Me in this place.’ 8 He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs. 9 Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph, they sold him as a slave into Egypt. But God was with him 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He granted Joseph favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and all his household. 11 And a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan and great affliction, and our fathers could not find food. 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers on their first visit. 13 On their second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Pharaoh learned of Joseph's parentage. 14 Then Joseph sent for his father Jacob, and for all his family, seventy-five in all. 15 So Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our fathers died. 16 Their bones were carried back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a price he paid in silver. 17 As the time drew near for God to fulfill His promise to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased greatly in number. 18 until another king, who knew nothing about Joseph, became ruler of Egypt. 19 "He dealt craftily with our race, and oppressed our forefathers, by making them expose their infants so that they should not live. 20 "At that time Moses was born, and was beautiful in God's sight. For three months he was cared for in his father's house. 21 and when he was placed outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him and brought him up as her own son. 22 So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action. 23 When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his brothers, the sons of Israel. 24 When he saw one of them being mistreated, he defended him and avenged the man who was being mistreated by killing the Egyptian. 25 He assumed his brothers would understand that God was using him to deliver them, but they did not. 26 The next day he came upon two Israelites who were fighting, and he tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why are you mistreating one another?’ 27 But the man who was abusing his neighbor pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?' 29 At this remark, Moses fled to the land of Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons. 30 After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight. As he approached to look more closely, the voice of the Lord came to him: 32 ‘I am the God of your Fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look. 33 Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of My people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’ 35 This Moses, whom they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’ is the one God sent to be their ruler and redeemer, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out and performed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the wilderness. 37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren.' 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. And he received living words to pass on to us. 39 But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. 40 They said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us! As for this Moses who led us out of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.’ 41 They even made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to their idol, and held a celebration over what their own hands had made. 42 But God turned, and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets, 'Did you offer to me sacrifices and offerings forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? 43 You took along the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the idols you made to worship. Therefore I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’ 44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen. 45 And having received it in their turn, our fathers brought it in with Joshua when they took the land from the nations whom God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the time of David, 46 who found favor in God's sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built the house for Him. 48 However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: 49 ‘Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me, says the Lord, or where will My place of repose be? 50 Has not my hand made all these things? 51 You stiff-necked people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit, just as your fathers did. 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute? They even killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One. And now you are His betrayers and murderers— 53 you who have received the law through ranks of angels, but have not kept it. 54 When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57 At this they covered their ears, cried out in a loud voice, and rushed together at him. 58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Genesis 37:4-11

4 When his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him and could not speak one kind word unto him. 5 Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers, and they hated him all the more. 6 He said: "Please listen to the dream I had. 7 for look, we were binding sheaves in the field, and look, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and look, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf." 8 And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us, or shall you really rule over us? And they hated him still more because of his dreams, and because of his words. 9 Joseph had another dream and told his brothers: "I had another dream, in which I saw the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to me." 10 And he told it to his father and to his brothers. And his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the ground to you?" 11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

Genesis 37:18-29

18 And they saw him from a distance. And before he came near to them, they plotted against him, to kill him. 19 They said one to another, "Look, this dreamer comes. 20 And now go, and we will kill him and fling him into one of the cisterns and say, `An evil animal devoured him,' and see will we what will become of his dreams. 21 Reuben heard this and tried to protect Joseph from them. »Let us not kill him,« he said. 22 And Reuben said to them, Do not shed blood. Throw him into this pit in the desert, but do not lay a hand on him; so that he might deliver him from their hands, to return him to his father. 23 So when Joseph came to his brothers they stripped him of the variegated robe which he had on 24 and they took him and cast him into the cistern; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 As they sat down to eat, they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were carrying the materials for cosmetics, medicine, and embalming. They were on their way to take them to Egypt. 26 Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27 "Let us sell him to the Ishmaelites. Let us not hurt him, because he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed. 28 Some of the Midianite traders approached. The brothers pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him for twenty pieces of silver to the Ishmaelites. They took him to Egypt. 29 Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

15 And Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead. And they said, What if Joseph should bear a grudge against us and should surely repay us all the evil which we did to him? 16 So they sent word to Joseph, saying, Your father, before his death, gave us orders, saying, 17 Thus shall you say to Joseph. Forgive them their iniquity and their sin for having done thee evil. Now therefore forgive the iniquity of the servants of the God of thy father. And while they were speaking to him, Joseph wept. 18 Then his brothers also came and immediately bowed down in front of him. "We are your slaves!" they said. 19 Joseph said to them, Don't be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 Ye thought evil unto me: but God turned it unto good to bring to pass, as it is this day, even to save much people alive.

Genesis 41:12-46

12 And there was there with us a Hebrew youth, a bondman of the captain of the life-guard, to whom we told [them], and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each he interpreted according to his dream. 13 And it fell out as he interpreted to us: I was restored to my office; but he was hanged. 14 And Pharaoh sent and called Joseph; and they rushed him from the dungeon. And he shaved and changed his clothing and came in to Pharaoh. 15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it." 16 And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace without me." 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, In my dream, lo, I was standing on the lip of the River. 18 And out of the Nile came seven cows, fat and good-looking, and their food was the river-grass; 19 Then after them came seven other cows, very thin and poor-looking, worse than any I ever saw in the land of Egypt; 20 And the thin cows made a meal of the seven fat cows who came up first; 21 »Even though they had eaten the fat cows, no one could tell they had eaten them. They looked just as sick as before. Then I woke up. 22 And again in a dream I saw seven heads of grain, full and good, coming up on one stem: 23 »Seven other heads of grain, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind, sprouted behind them. 24 "The thin heads of grain swallowed the seven good heads. I told this to the magicians, but no one could tell me what it meant." 25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 "The seven good cows are seven years. The seven good heads of grain are seven years. It is all the same dream. 27 The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine. 28 "It is just as I said to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what he is going to do. 29 Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the whole land of Egypt. 30 And seven years of famine will arise after them and all the plenty of the land of Egypt will be forgotten; and the famine will consume the land. 31 Abundance in the land will not be known because of the famine that follows, for it will be very heavy. 32 "The reason Pharaoh has had a recurring dream is because the matter has been definitely decided by God. He will do it very soon. 33 And now will Pharaoh look out a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt 34 Let Pharaoh act and let him appoint rulers over the land and take a fifth of the land of Egypt in the seven years of plenty. 35 Let them gather all the food of these good years that come, and store grain under the hand of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it. 36 "This food will be a reserve supply for our country during the seven years of famine that will happen in Egypt. Then the land will not be ruined by the famine." 37 And this seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his servants. 38 And Pharaoh said to his servants, Can we find any man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God? 39 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all of this known to you there is no one as discerning and wise as you. 40 You shall be over my house, and to your word all my people shall submit. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you." 41 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, See, I have put you over all the land of Egypt. 42 Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck, 43 He had him ride in his second chariot. They proclaimed before him: "Bow the knee!" Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt. 44 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, but without your consent no one will lift his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt." 45 And Pharaoh gave Joseph the name of Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera, the priest of On, to be his wife. So Joseph went through all the land of Egypt. 46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from Pharaoh, and passed through the whole land of Egypt.

Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die." 3 And Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with them, for fear, as he said, that some evil might come to him. 5 The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 Now Joseph was the governor over the land. He was the one who sold food to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Joseph came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. 7 And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger to them. And he spoke with them harshly and said to them, "From where have you come?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food." 8 Even though Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph remembered his dream, which he saw; and he said to them, You are spies! You have come to see the exposed parts of the land! 10 But they said, No, my lord, we your servants have come to buy food; 11 We are all the sons of one man. We are men of peace. Thy servants are not spies. 12 And he said to them, No, but you have come to see the bareness of the land. 13 Then they said, We your servants are twelve brothers, sons of one man in the land of Canaan; the youngest of us is now with our father, and one is dead. 14 Joseph said to them, "It is like I told you, saying, 'You are spies.' 15 By this you shall be proved; as Pharaoh lives you shall not go forth from here unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of your number to get your brother, and the rest of you will be kept in prison, so that your words may be tested to see if you are true; if not, by the life of Pharaoh, your purpose is certainly secret. 17 And he put them in custody three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live; I fear God. 19 "If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in prison. Concerning the rest of you, carry grain for the famine of your households, 20 and bring your youngest brother to me, in order that your words be verified, and that ye may not die. And they did so. 21 They said to one another: "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw his distress when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen. Therefore this distress has come upon us." 22 Reuben said: "Did I not tell you? Did I say, 'Do not sin against the boy'? You would not listen! Now comes the reckoning for his blood." 23 They were not aware that Joseph understood them, for he spake unto them by an interpreter. 24 He turned away from them and wept. When he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

So there was no attendant with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers, 2 He cried so loudly that the Egyptians heard him. In fact, Pharaoh's household heard about it. 3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?" And his brothers were unable to answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. 4 And Joseph said to his brothers, Now come near to me And they came near. And he said, I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 So now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves that you sold me here, for God sent me as deliverance before you. 6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are yet five years, in which there will be no plowing and no harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 »It was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me like a father to Pharaoh. He made me lord over his entire household, and ruler of Egypt. 9 Hurry, and go up to my father, and tell him, 'This is what your son Joseph says, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me. Don't wait. 10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you will be near to me, you, your children, your children's children, your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 And I will provide for you there, because there are still five years of famine—lest you and your household and all that you have become destitute.' 12 Now behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is I who am speaking to you. 13 "You must tell my father of my entire splendor in Egypt. Tell him all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here." 14 Then he fell upon the neck of his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 He kissed all his brothers and wept on them. Afterward his brothers talked with him. 16 When the news reached the palace that Joseph's brothers had come, the king and his officials were pleased. 17 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Tell your brothers, 'Do this. Load your animals, and go, travel to the land of Canaan. 18 and take your father and your households and come to me, and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat the fat of the land.'

And he urged him, and he accepted. 12 Then he said, Let us depart and march on straightway. 13 Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Let my lord pass on before his servant and I will move along slowly at the pace of the livestock that are ahead of me, and at the pace of the children until I come to my lord in Seir." 15 And Esau said, "Let me leave some of my people with you." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord." 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 Jacob moved on to Succoth. He built a house there for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is named Succoth. 18 Jacob traveled safely from Paddan-aram to the city of Shechem in Canaan. He camped within sight of the city. 19 And for a hundred bits of money he got from the children of Hamor, the builder of Shechem, the field in which he had put up his tents. 20 And there he set up an altar, and called it El-Elohe-Israel.

Genesis 34:2-31

Since his sons were out in the fields with his livestock, he did nothing until they came back. 6 Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob. 7 The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing that ought not to be done. 8 And Hamor spoke with them, saying, My son Shechem's soul is bound to your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife. 9 Make marriages with us. Give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. 10 And live with us, and the land is before you; live and trade in it, and get property in it. 11 Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do. 12 Make the bride price and gift as high as you like; I will give what you say to me. But give me the girl as a wife." 13 And the sons of Jacob answer Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and they speak (because he defiled Dinah their sister), 14 And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that is a disgrace for us. 15 Only herein, can we consent to you,—If ye will become like us, by circumcising to you every male, 16 then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for wives, and dwell among you and be as one race. 17 But if you will not be circumcised, we will take our daughter and depart. 18 And their words were pleasing to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man did not wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father. 20 so Emmor and his son Sychem went to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city saying. 21 "These people are friendly toward us. So let them live in our land and move about freely in the area. Look, there is plenty of room in this land for them. We can marry their daughters and let them marry ours. 22 »These people will consent to live with us and become one nation on one condition: Every male must be circumcised, as they are. 23 Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us give consent to them so they will live among us." 24 All the citizens of the city agreed with what Hamor and Shechem proposed. Then all the males were circumcised. 25 It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males. 26 And they killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword. And they took Dinah from the house of Shechem, and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain. They plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. 28 they take their flocks and their oxen and their he burros and that in the city and that in the field 29 And they took all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives, and looted all that was in the house. 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi: "You have brought trouble on me by making me loathsome to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Per'izzites. Exodus 1:8

8 A new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt. 9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the Israelites are greater and more numerous than us. 10 Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land." 11 So the Egyptians put slave masters over them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply (storage) cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grew: so that they abhorred the children of Israel. 13 They forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves. 14 and they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of labor in the field, all their labors which they ruthlessly made them do. 15 The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives. Shiphrah and Puah were among them. 16 "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live. 18 And the king of Egypt summoned the midwives, and he said to them, "Why have you done this thing and let the boys live?" 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women aren't like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwife comes to them." 20 God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty. 21 And so because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: Every son who is born must be thrown into the Nile River. However, keep every daughter alive.

She saw the container among the reeds and sent a servant girl to get it. 6 She opened it and saw a baby boy. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. "This is one of the Hebrew babies," she said. 7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the nursing Hebrew women so she can nurse the child for you?" 8 "Please do," she answered. So the girl went and brought the baby's own mother. 9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages." The woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

1 The whole congregation of Israelites moved from Elim to the desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai. This was on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left Egypt. 2 all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them: "If only the LORD had allowed us to die in Egypt! There we sat by our pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted! You brought us out into this desert to let us all starve to death!" 4 the LORD said to Moses: "I am going to cause food to rain down from the sky for all of you. The people must go out every day and gather enough for that day. In this way I can test them to find out if they will follow my instructions. 5 And on the sixth day they are to make ready what they get in, and it will be twice as much as they get on the other days. 6 Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites: »This evening you will know that it was the LORD who brought you out of Egypt. 7 and in the morning, you will see the glory of the LORD, for he hears your grumblings against the LORD, and what are we that you grumble against us?" 8 Moses said: "This will happen when the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to eat in the morning. the LORD hears your complaints against him. And what are we? Your complaints are not against us but against the LORD." 9 Then Moses said to Aaron: Say to the whole congregation of the sons of Israel, Come near before the LORD, for He has heard your grumblings. 10 While Aaron was speaking to all the congregation of the Israelites, they turned toward the desert, and there the glory of the LORD was seen in the cloud. 11 The LORD said to Moses, 12 "I have heard the grumblings of the Israelites. Speak to them, saying, 'At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be full with bread, and you will know that I am the LORD your God.'" 13 Later that evening quail came up and covered the camp, and then in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 After the dew had gone, the desert was covered with thin flakes that looked like frost. 15 When the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat." 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: "Each man should gather according to what he can eat. You shall take two quarts for each person in your tent." 17 The Israelites did this, some gathering much, some little.

These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites." 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which LORD commanded him. 8 All the people answered together: "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD. 9 the LORD said to Moses: "I will come to you in a thick cloud. The people will hear me speaking with you and will believe you from now on." Moses gave the LORD the people's answer. 10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. They must wash their clothes, 11 and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set boundaries for the people all around: 'Be very careful that you don't go up on the mountain or touch the side of it. Anyone who touches the mountain will surely be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.' When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain." 14 When Moses went down from the mountain to the people, he consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, Be ready for the third day; do not come near [your] wives. 16 When morning came on the third day, there was thunder and lightning with a heavy cloud over the mountain and the very loud sound of a ram's horn. All the people in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire. Its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace. The whole mountain quaked violently! 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice. 20 The LORD came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. The LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

15 On the day the tabernacle was set up, a cloud covered the tabernacle the tent for the testimony so that from evening until morning, there was like the appearance of fire over the tabernacle. 16 So it was continually: the cloud covered it, and at night it was as the appearance of fire. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted up from on the tent, after that the Israelites would set out, and in the place where the cloud dwelled, there the Israelites camped. 18 At the commandment of LORD the sons of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of LORD they encamped. As long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they remained encamped. 19 When the smoke stayed over the tent for a long time, the Israelites obeyed the LORD's command and did not break camp. 20 Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle for a number of days. At the bidding of Yahweh they encamped, and at the bidding of Yahweh they journeyed. 21 Sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning; and when the cloud was taken up in the morning, they traveled; or by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they traveled. 22 Whether two days, a month, or days longer that the cloud remains above the tabernacle, the Israelites would camp and not travel. But when it is lifted up, then they would travel. 23 At the LORD's command they set up camp, and at his command they broke camp. They obeyed the command the LORD gave through Moses.

Numbers 11:1-35

1 Now the people complained about hunger speaking evil in the ears of the LORD, so that when the LORD heard it, his anger flared and the fire of the LORD burned against them and even consumed the outskirts of the camp. 2 Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down. 3 That place was called Taberah (Fire) because fire from the LORD burned among them there. 4 Some foreigners among the Israelites had a strong craving for other kinds of food. Even the Israelites cried again and said: "If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumber, melon, leek, the onions, and the garlic. 6 "Now we have lost our appetite! Everywhere we look there is nothing but manna!" 7 The manna was like coriander seed, and it looked like bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it, and they ground it with mills or crushed it with mortar. Then they boiled it in a pot and made it into bread-cakes; and it tasted like olive oil cakes. 9 When the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna came down with it. 10 Moses heard people from every family cry at the entrance to their tents. the LORD became very angry. Moses did not like it either. 11 So he asked: "the LORD, why have you brought me this trouble? How have I displeased you that you put the burden of all these people on me? 12 Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them forth, that you should tell me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?' 13 "Where can I get meat for all these people? They continually cry for me to give them meat to eat. 14 I cannot bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me! 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, please kill me immediately if I find favor in your eyes, and do not let me see my misery." 16 The LORD said to Moses, "Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and speak with you there; I will take away from the spirit that is on you, and I will place it on them; and they will bear the burdens of the people with you; you will not bear it alone. 18 “Say to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, and you will eat meat; for you have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt.” Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat. 19 You will not eat just one day, or two days, or five days, or ten days, or twenty days, 20 but a whole month, until it comes out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because you have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, “Why did we come out of Egypt?”'” 21 And Moses said: There are six hundred thousand footmen of this people, and sayest thou: I will give them flesh to eat a whole month? 22 "Could enough cattle and sheep even be killed to satisfy them? Are all the fish in the sea enough for them? 23 The LORD said to Moses, "Has the LORD's hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not." 24 Thus Moses went out and told the people what the LORD said. He assembled seventy of the leaders and placed them around the tent. 25 the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more. 26 Two of the seventy elders, Eldad and Medad, stayed in the camp and did not go out to the tent. There in the camp the Spirit came on them, and they too began to shout like prophets. 27 A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." 28 Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses' helper since he was a young man, spoke up and said to Moses: "Stop them, sir!" 29 Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them." 30 Then Moses and the elders of Israel went back to the camp. 31 the LORD sent a wind from the sea that brought quails and dropped them all around the camp. There were quails on the ground about three feet deep as far as you could walk in a day in any direction. 32 All that day and night and all the next day the people went out and gathered the quails. No one gathered less than sixty bushels. Then they spread the quails out all around the camp. 33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague. 34 Therefore that place was named Kibroth-hattaavah because there, they buried the people who had insatiable appetite for meat. 35 From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.

Numbers 14:1-45

1 Upon this, all the congregation, raising their voices, shouted aloud, and 2 All the Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly said to them: Oh that we had died in Egypt or in this wilderness. 3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones shall be taken as plunder. Is it not better for us to return to Egypt? 4 They said to each other: "Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt." 5 Then Moses and Aaron went down on their faces before the meeting of the people. 6 Joshua, the son of Nun and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, who were with those who explored the land, tore their clothes. 7 They reasoned with the entire congregation of Israel saying: The land, which we've passed through to explore is exceedingly good. 8 If the LORD delight in us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us, a land that flows with milk and honey; 9 Only, do not rebel against the LORD. And you, do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their defense has turned away from them; and the LORD is with us; do not be afraid of them. 10 But the whole congregation desired to stone them to death. Suddenly, the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting, to all the Israelites. 11 The LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they. 13 Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them; 14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that you LORD are among this people, that you LORD are seen face to face, and that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them, by daytime in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. 15 "But if you kill all these people at the same time the nations who have heard these reports about you will say, 16 "the LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them, so he slaughtered them in the desert. 17 Now, let the power of the LORD be magnified just as you've promised saying: 18 'the LORD is slow to anger and great of loyal love, forgiving sin and rebellion; but surely he leaves nothing unpunished, visiting the sin of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generations.' 19 "By your great love, please forgive these people's sins, as you have forgiven them from the time they left Egypt until now." 20 the LORD said: "I forgive them, as you have asked. 21 But as I live, and my name liveth, and the glory of the Lord shall fill the whole earth; 22 For all the men having seen my glory and my signs which I did in Egypt and in the desert, and they will try me this ten times, they heard not to my voice. 23 they will not see the land that I swore by oath to their ancestors, and all those who despised me will not see it. 24 »My servant Caleb has a different attitude and has wholeheartedly followed me, I will bring him to the land he already explored. His descendants will possess it. 25 And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the Red Sea." 26 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron: 27 How long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. 28 Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' declares the LORD, 'just as you spoke in my hearing, so I will do to you; 29 in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from twenty years old and above who grumbled against me. 30 none of you, shall enter into the land, as to which I uplifted my hand to give you an abode therein,—save Caleb son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun: 31 But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected. 32 But, your own dead bodies, shall fall in this desert; 33 "'Your children will be shepherds in the desert for forty years. They will suffer for your unfaithfulness until the last of your bodies lies dead in the desert. 34 "'You explored the land for forty days. So for forty years, one year for each day, you will suffer for your sins and know what it means for me to be against you.' 35 I, the LORD, have spoken; I will surely do this to all this evil community who has banded together against me. In this desert they will come to an end, and there they will die." 36 As for the men whom Moses sent to explore the land, who returned and made the community grumble against him by spreading a report over the land, 37 the men who spread the evil report of the land died by the plague before the LORD. 38 Of all the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived. 39 And Moses spoke words to all the Israelites, and the people mourned greatly. 40 Early the next morning they headed into the mountains. They said: "We have sinned. Now we will go to the place the LORD promised." 41 Moses asked: "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? Your plan will not work! 42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you; do not be smitten before your enemies. 43 »The Amalekites and Canaanites are there. You will die in battle. Now that you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you.« 44 Yet they presumed to go up to the summit of the hill-country though the coffer of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, were not removed from within the camp. 45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.

Numbers 16:1-17

1 Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, arose along with Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth (sons of Reuben);" 2 and they rose up against Moses, with two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, princes of the congregation, of the council, men of renown; 3 They came together to confront Moses and Aaron. They said: "You have gone far enough! Everyone in the whole congregation is holy. the LORD is among them. Why do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?" 4 When Moses heard this, he fell on his face. 5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him, who is holy. He will have that person come near him. Only the person the LORD chooses will be allowed to come near him. 6 »Korah, you and all your followers must do this tomorrow: Take incense burners, 7 tomorrow put fire in them and place incense on them before the LORD; the man whom the LORD chooses will be the holy one. You take too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi!" 8 Moses also said to Korah: »Listen, you sons of Levi! 9 Is it a small thing to you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the LORD's tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them; 10 "He brought you and all the other Levites near. But now you demand to be priests. 11 "You and all your followers have joined forces against the LORD! Who is Aaron that you should complain about him?" 12 Then Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab. But they said: "We will not come! 13 "Is it not enough that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey only to kill us in the desert? Do you also have to order us around? 14 Moreover you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up. 15 Moses was very angry, and said to the LORD, "Do not respect their offering: I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them." 16 And Moses said to Korah, You and all your band are to come before the Lord tomorrow, you and they and Aaron: 17 "Each man will take his incense burner and put incense in it. They will offer all two hundred and fifty incense burners to the LORD. Then you and Aaron offer your incense burners."

Numbers 20:1-21

1 In the first month the whole congregation of Israel came into the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died and was buried there. 2 There was no water for the community, and they were gathered before Moses and Aaron. 3 And the people quarreled with Moses and spoke, saying, "If only we died when our brothers were dying before the LORD! 4 "Did you bring the LORD's assembly into this desert just to have us all die and our animals? 5 And, why have you brought us up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place, not a place of seed, nor fig, nor vine, nor pomegranate; and there is no water to drink? 6 Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared to them. 7 the LORD said to Moses: 8 "Take the staff and summon the community, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give water. Bring out for them water from the rock, and let the community and their livestock drink." 9 So Moses took the staff from ⌊before⌋ Yahweh just as he command him, 10 Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring you water out of this rock for you?" 11 Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. And abundant water went out, and the community and their livestock drank. 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not trusted in me, to regard me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given to them." 13 Those were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD, and he showed himself holy among them. 14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said: "This is what your brother Israel says: 'You know all the hardships we have had. 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers. 16 When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border. 17 Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" 18 Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us lest we will go out to meet you with the sword." 19 The Israelites said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we and our livestock drink your water, we will pay for it. It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet." 20 And he said, You shall not pass through. And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; and Israel turned away from him.

Deuteronomy 2:25-37

25 Today, I will begin to put your dread and your fear upon the nations under the whole heavens; who shall hear report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you. 26 Then from the waste land of Kedemoth I sent representatives to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with words of peace, saying, 27 I will pass through your land; I will go by the road, I will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 28 Sell me food for cash so I can eat and give me water for cash, so I can drink. Just let me pass through on foot 29 as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us. We will keep going until we cross the Jordan River into the land the LORD our God is giving us.' 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today. 31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'See, I've begun to deliver Sihon and his territory over to you. Prepare to take possession of his land.' 32 Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. 33 The LORD our God delivered him to us, so we attacked him, his son, and his whole army. 34 At that time we took all his towns, and gave them over to complete destruction, together with men, women, and children; we had no mercy on any: 35 But the domestic beasts we plundered for ourselves, and the loot of the cities that we had seized. 36 From Aroer on the edge of Arnon Valley and from the town all the way to Gilead, there was no city that was too strong for us the LORD our God delivered them all to us. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not come near, all the side of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill-country and wherever the LORD our God forbad us.

Deuteronomy 4:33-37

33 that a nation hath heard the voice of God speaking out of fire as thou hast heard, and yet lived? 34 Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 It was shown to you so that you might know that the LORD is God, and no one else beside Him. 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to teach you, and on the earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your ancestors he chose their descendants after them. And he brought you forth from Egypt with his own presence, by his great strength,

Deuteronomy 6:21-22

12 and you led them by day by a pillar of cloud; and by night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way wherein to go: 13 "You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments, 14 and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant, 15 and gave them bread from the heavens for their famine; and brought them water from the rock for their thirst; and said to them to go in to possess the land which you lifted your hand to give them.

Nehemiah 9:18-22

18 Yes, when they had made themselves a molded calf, and said, 'This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,' and had committed awful blasphemies; 19 Even then, in your great mercy, you did not give them up in the waste land: the pillar of cloud still went before them by day, guiding them on their way, and the pillar of fire by night, to give them light, and make clear the way they were to go. 20 You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. 21 Yea, forty years You sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing; their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell. 22 And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Psalms 78:12-33

12 He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. 13 He divided the sea, and led them through; He made the waters to stand as in a bottle. 14 He led them with the cloud by day and with a light of fire by night. 15 He split the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of the great depths. 16 And he brought streams out of the rock and caused water to flow down like rivers. 17 Yet they still continued to sin against him. They rebelled against the Most High in the desert. 18 And they tried God in their heart by asking food for their craving. 19 Nay, they spoke against God and said, "Can God provide a table in a desert? 20 Yes, he struck the rock and water flowed and streams gushed out, but can he also give food or provide meat for his people?" 21 Therefore the LORD heard and he was very angry, and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and his anger also rose up against Israel, 22 because they didn't believe in God and didn't trust in his deliverance. 23 Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven. 24 and rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. 25 Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full. 26 He made an east wind blow in the heavens; and He led out the south wind by His power. 27 He caused meat to rain on them like dust and winged birds as the sand of the sea. 28 And He made them fall amidst their camp, all around to their tents. 29 So they did eat, and were well filled; and He gave them that which they craved. 30 But they were not turned from their desires; and while the food was still in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came on them, and put to death the fattest of them, and put an end to the young men of Israel. 32 In spite of all of this, they kept on sinning and didn't believe in his marvelous deeds. 33 And he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.

They inherited what others had worked for. 45 that they might keep his statutes, and observe his laws. Praise the LORD.

Psalms 106:8-11

8 But He saved them for His name's sake, to make His mighty power known. 9 He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up; so he led them through the depths, as through a desert. 10 He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. 11 But waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived.

He shall go out alone. 5 And if the servant shall say: I love my master and my wife and children, I will not go out free: 6 Then let his master bring him unto the judges and set him to the door or the doorpost, and bore his ear through with an awl, and let him be his servant forever. 7 "If a man sell his daughter to be a servant: she shall not go out as the menservants do. 8 If she's displeasing to her master who selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He put burning coals and incense in it and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 19 Korah assembled all his followers who opposed Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The glory of the LORD appeared to the entire group. 20 the LORD said to Moses and Aaron: 21 "Separate yourselves from this congregation, that I may consume them at once." 22 And they fell on their faces, and said, O God, God of the spirits of all flesh; shall one man sin, and will You be angry with all the congregation? 23 Then the LORD said to Moses: 24 Say to the people, Come away from the tent of Korah Dathan, and Abiram. 25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 He said to the congregation: "Move away from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you’ll be swept away because of all their sins." 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram came out and were standing at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children. 28 Moses said: "This is how you will know that the LORD sent me to do all these things and that it wasn’t my idea: 29 "If these men die a natural death like all other people the LORD has not sent me. 30 "But if the LORD does something totally new, if the ground opens up, swallows them and everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive to their graves; then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." 31 When he finished speaking, the ground under them split, 32 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households, all of Korah's men, and all their goods. 33 They went down alive to their graves with everything that belonged to them. The ground covered them. They disappeared from the assembly. 34 And all Israel around them fled at their cry. For they said, Lest the earth swallow us up. 35 And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

Everything they said was good. 29 Oh that they had such a heart with them to fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might go well with them and with their children forever. 30 "'Go and tell them to return to their tents, 31 But you stay here with me. Through these instructions you will live long in the land that you are about to cross over the Jordan River to possess.

6 in that day I swore to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands. 7 And I said to them, Cast away every man the abominations of his eyes and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. 8 But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me. They did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt. 9 But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. 10 Therefore I brought them out from the land of Egypt, and brought them into the desert. 11 and I gave them my statutes and declared unto them my rights, by which the man that does them shall live by them. 12 '""I also gave them certain days to worship me as a sign between us so that they would know that I, the LORD, made them holy. 13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he will live in them. And they greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Exodus 32:1

1 When the people saw that Moses took a long time to come down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and told him, "Come here and make us a god who will go before us, because, as for this fellow Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him."

After that they sat down to a feast, which turned into an orgy. 7 the LORD said to Moses: "Go down there. Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly from the way that I commanded them; they have made for themselves a cast-image bull calf, and they bowed to it, and they sacrificed to it, and they said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'"

He threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the base of the mountain. 20 He took the calf that they had made, burned it with fire, and ground it into powder. He scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

Deuteronomy 9:12-18

12 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Get going! Go down from here at once! Your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned quickly from the way that I commanded them, and have cast an idol for their use.' 13 And the LORD spoke to me saying:I have seen this people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people. 14 Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. 15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount was burning with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 »I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You made yourselves an idol, cast in the shape of a calf. You turned aside quickly from the way the LORD had commanded you. 17 And I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands and broke them before your eyes. 18 And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights, -- I ate no bread and drank no water, -- because of all your sin which ye had sinned, in doing what is evil in the eyes of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

8 Their land is full of idols. They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made. 9 Man is brought low, and mankind is humbled; therefore do not forgive them.

Isaiah 44:9-20

9 All who make idols are nothing. The things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They are shamefully ignorant. 10 Who shapes a god and casts a useless and good for nothing idol. 11 He and his kind will be put to shame. Craftsmen are merely men. Let them all come together and take their stand for they will be brought down to terror and infamy. 12 The blacksmith takes a tool and works with it in the coals. He shapes an idol with hammers; he forges it with the might of his arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength. He drinks no water and grows faint. 13 The carpenter measures with a line and makes an outline with a red chalk marker. He roughs it out with chisels and marks it with a compass. He shapes it in the form of man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a shrine. 14 He cut down cedars, or cypress or oak. He let it grow among the trees of the forest, or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow. 15 It is man's fuel for burning so he takes some to warm himself. He kindles a fire and bakes bread. But he also fashions a god and worships it. Yes he makes an idol and bows down to it. 16 He burns part of it in the fire. With part of it, he eats meat. He roasts a roast, and is satisfied. Yes, he warms himself and says, Ah! I am warm, I have seen the fire. 17 And the rest of it he makes into a god, his graven image; he falls down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, Deliver me! for you are my god. 18 They know not, they understand not; for their eyes are daubed over, that they cannot see; their hearts, that they cannot understand. 19 No one stops to think. No one has enough knowledge or understanding to say: "I burned half of the wood in the fire. I also baked bread over its coals. I roasted meat and ate it. Now I am making the rest of the wood into a disgusting thing and bowing to a block of wood." 20 He feeds on ashes; a deceived mind misleads him. And he cannot save himself, and he cannot say, "Is this not an illusion in my right hand?"

Habakkuk 2:18-20

18 What does an image profit, for its maker has carved it; a molten image, and a teacher of lies? For does the maker trust in his work on it, to make dumb idols? 19 Woe to him who says to the wood, 'Wake up!' And to a lifeless stone, 'Arise!' Can he teach? Look, it is covered with gold and silver, and there is no breath within it. 20 But the LORD is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him."

7 For everyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who live in Israel, who separates himself from me, and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: 8 And I will set my face against that man, and will make him an example, and a proverb, and will cut him off from the midst of my people: and you shall know that I am the Lord. 9 And if the prophet be enticed and shall speak a word, I the LORD have enticed that prophet; and I will stretch out my hand against him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. 10 They will bear their iniquity. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonoring of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to retain the knowledge of God, God gave them over to a base mind, to do what ought not to be done.

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12

2 Samuel 6:1-23

1 David again gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 Then David and all the people with him set out from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, who is called the Name, the name of the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, and who is enthroned on the cherubim. 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in the hill: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 4 with the ark of God; and Uzzah and Ahio were walking in front of and by the side of the ark. 5 David and all the Israelites danced and sang with all their might to honor the LORD. They played harps, lyres, drums, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals. 6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzza reached out to the ark of God and took hold of it, because the oxen had stumbled. 7 the LORD's anger burned against Uzzah; and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by God's ark. 8 David was angry because the LORD had burst out against Uzza, and he called that place Perez-Uzza until this day. 9 David was afraid of the LORD that day; and he said, How can the ark of the LORD come to me? 10 So David would not move the ark of the LORD to be with him in the city of David; but David carried it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11 So the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his household. 12 It was told to King David, "the LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and all that is his because of the ark of God." So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the city of David with jubilation. 13 After those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed oxen and fattened animals, 14 And David, clothed in a linen ephod, was dancing before the Lord with all his strength. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. 16 And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. 18 David finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings. Then he blessed the people in the name of the LORD Almighty. 19 He also distributed to all the people, to the whole crowd of Israelites, men and women, one loaf of bread, one date cake, and one raisin cake. Then all the people went home. 20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants as on 21 And David said to Michal, It was before the LORD, who chose me rather than thy father, and than all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel; and I played before the LORD. 22 And I will be yet more vile than this and will be humble in my own sight, but of the handmaids of whom you have spoken, of them I will be had in honor. 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death.

You and your brothers must perform the ceremonies to make yourselves holy. Then bring the Ark of the LORD the God of Israel to the place I prepared for it. 13 For because you didn’t carry it at first, the LORD our God broke out in anger against us, because we didn’t seek him according to the ordinance.” 14 So the priests and the Levites made themselves holy to bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel. 15 The children of the Levites bore the ark of God with its poles on their shoulders, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD. 16 Then David ordered the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers with instruments of song, musical instruments, stringed instruments, and cymbals, raising their voices for joy. 17 So the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel, and from his brothers, Asaph the son of Berekiah, and from the sons of Merari, their brothers, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;

Now he was ruddy, with a beautiful face and handsome appearance. the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is the one. 13 Then Samuel took the bottle of oil, and put the oil on him there among his brothers: and from that day the spirit of the Lord came on David with power. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant it and they shall continue in one place and shall move no more, neither shall wicked people trouble them any more as they did at the beginning, 11 In the manner that I appointed judges over my people Israel, I will give you rest from all your enemies. And the LORD declares to you that the LORD will build a house for you. 12 When your days are full and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you who will go out from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 It is he who shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 14 "'I will be his father. He will be my son. 1 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the LORD's house. 2 And the house which King Solomon built for the LORD, was sixty cubits long and twenty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.

1 Kings 7:13-51

13 King Solomon sent for Hiram from Tyre, 14 the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali, whose father was from Tyre. A bronze worker, he was wise, knowledgeable, and was skilled in all sorts of bronze working. He went to King Solomon and did all of his work. 15 He fashioned two bronze pillars, each one 27 feet high and having a circumference of 18 feet . 16 And he made two head pieces of molten brass to set on the tops of the pillars, of five cubits long apiece, 17 He made also two pieces of net work to cover the chapiters of the pillars; one piece of net work for each chapiter. 18 And he made pomegranates, namely two rows round about upon the one network, to cover the capitals that were upon the top of the pillars; and so he did for the other capital. 19 And on the capitals which were on top of the pillars in the porch were works of lilies four cubits high. 20 and the caps on the two pillars also above - beside the belly beside the net: with two hundred pomegranates in rows all around on the second cap. 21 He put up the pillars at the doorway of the Temple, naming the one on the right Jachin, and that on the left Boaz. 22 On the top of the pillars was a work of lilies; and so the work of the pillars was finished. 23 And he works a poured sea, ten cubits lip to lip all around and five cubits high: and a line of thirty cubits surround it all around: 24 And under its brim were gourds, going around it, ten by the cubit, going all around the sea. The gourds were cast in two rows when it was cast. 25 The sea stood atop twelve oxen. Three faced north, three faced west, three faced south, and three faced east. The sea was set on top of them, and their hind parts were toward the center. 26 It was a handbreadth thick: and its brim was worked like the brim of a cup, like the flower of a lily: it held two thousand baths. 27 He made the ten stands of bronze; each stand was four cubits long, four cubits wide, and three cubits in height. 28 They were made of square panels set in frames. 29 and on the panels that were between the ledges were lions, oxen, and cherubim; and on the ledges there was a pedestal above; and beneath the lions and oxen were wreaths of hanging work. 30 Each cart had four bronze wheels equipped with bronze axels with four support feet. Beneath the basin were cast support structures made like wreaths on each side. 31 Its mouth within the capital and above was a cubit. Its mouth was round after the work of a pedestal, a cubit and a half; and also on its mouth were engravings, and their panels were square, not round. 32 Four of the wheels were underneath the frames, and the axles of the wheels were on the stands. The height of each wheel was a cubit and a half. 33 The wheels were like chariot wheels. Their axles, rims, spokes, and hubs were all of copper. 34 And the four undersetters in the four corners were of the very bottoms. 35 In the top of the base there was a round band half a cubit high; and on the top of the base its supports and its panels were the same. 36 And he engraved cherubs, lions, and palm trees on the plates of its sides, and on its borders, as the place of each, with wreaths all around. 37 This is how the carts were made. They were all alike, having the same size and shape. 38 He also made ten bronze basins, each holding forty baths; each basin was four cubits, one basin on each of the ten stands. 39 He placed five of the stands on the south side of the house and five on the north side of the house, and the sea he set on the southeast side of the house. 40 And Hiram made the basins, and the shovels, and the bowls. And Hiram finished all the work that he made for king Solomon for the house of the LORD: 41 the two pillars and the bowls of the caps on the top of the two pillars; and the two nets to cover the two bowls of the caps on top of the pillars; 42 the four hundred pomegranates for the two networks; two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowls of the capitals that were on the pillars; 43 the ten stands with the ten basins on the stands, 44 and a sea with twelve oxen under it; 45 and the pots, and the shovels, and the basins. All these vessels which Hiram made for King Solomon for the house of the LORD were of burnished bronze. 46 The king cast them in the plain of Jordan, in the thick soil of the ground between Succoth and Zarethan. 47 Solomon left all the vessels unweighed, because there were so many of them. The weight of the bronze could not be determined. 48 Solomon also made all of the vessels which were in the house of Yahweh: the golden altar and the golden table on which was the bread of the presence; 49 And the lampstands of pure gold, five on the right side, and five on the left, before the inner sanctuary, with the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs of gold, 50 And the bowls, and the wick trimmers, and the basins, and the ladles, and the censers of pure gold; and the hinges of gold, both for the doors of the inner room, the most holy place, and for the doors of the main hall of the temple. 51 Thus all the work that king Solomon worked in the house of the LORD was finished. Solomon brought in the things which David his father had dedicated, the silver, the gold and the vessels, and put them in the treasuries of the house of the LORD.

They heard the voice but did not see anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could not see a thing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9 For three days he was blind and neither ate nor drank anything. 10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Here I am, Lord,” he answered. 11 “Get up!” the Lord told him. “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13 But Ananias answered, “Lord, many people have told me about this man and all the harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. 14 And now he is here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.” 15 But the Lord said to him: "Go, for this man is my chosen instrument to uphold my Name before the Gentiles and their kings, and the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name." 17 So Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 All at once something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And he spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
