¹ David said, "Is there yet any who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake?"

¹ When David finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan became a close friend to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. ² Saul took David that day and did not let him return to his father's house. ³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. ⁴ Jonathan stripped himself of the robe he was wearing and gave it to David with his tunic and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

¹⁴ But while I live, show me the grace of the LORD so that I will not be killed. ¹⁵ Also, do not cut off your kindness from my house forever, not even when the LORD has cut off all the enemies of David from the surface of the earth. ¹⁶ So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD call the enemies of David to account." ¹⁷ Jonathan made David vow again out of his love for him, because he loved him as himself.

⁴² Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, forever.'" He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.

¹⁶ And Saul's son Jonathan went to David in Horesh, and made his hands strong in God; ¹⁷ He said to him, "Do not be afraid, for the hand of my father Saul will not find you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. My father Saul knows this also." ¹⁸ The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. David remained at Horesh while Jonathan went home.

²⁶ I am grieved for you, my brother Jonathan; you were very lovely to me; your love to me was wonderful beyond the love of women.

⁷ But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table; for so they came to me when I fled from Absalom your brother.

¹⁰ Do not forsake your own friend and your father's friend. And do not go to your brother's house in the day of your calamity. Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far off.

⁴² And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

⁴⁰ And the King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’

⁴¹ For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name, because you belong to Christ, will by no means lose his reward.

²⁶ When Jesus saw His mother and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, here is your son.” ²⁷ Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.

⁹ I prefer to appeal to you on the ground of love. Well then, as Paul the old man, who now-a-days is a prisoner for Christ Jesus, ¹⁰ I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whose father I became while I was in chains. ¹¹ Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me. ¹² So receive him, who is my very heart

⁸ Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble in spirit.
