¹ Sometime after this, David's son Amnon fell in love with David's other son Absalom's beautiful sister Tamar. ² And Amnon was so frustrated that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar. For she was a virgin, and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her. ³ And Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David`s brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd man. ⁴ He said to him, "Why, son of the king, are you so sad from day to day? Won't you tell me?" Amnon said to him, "I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister." ⁵ Jonadab said to him, “Lay down on your bed, and pretend to be sick. When your father comes to see you, tell him, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.'” ⁶ So Amnon lay down and faked being sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, "Please let my sister Tamar come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand." ⁷ And David sent home to Tamar, saying, Please go to the house of your brother Amnon and make food for him. ⁸ And Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, and he was lying down: and she took the dough and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. ⁹ and emptied the baking skillet just for him, but he refused to eat. "Send everybody out of here," Amnon said. So everyone left the room. ¹⁰ And Amnon said to Tamar, Bring the food into the inner room, and I shall eat from your hand. And Tamar took the cakes that she had made and brought them in to her brother Amnon, into the inner room. ¹¹ And when she had presented him the meat, he took hold of her, and said: Come lie with me, my sister. ¹² Then Tamar said to him, "No, my brother! Do not force me, for such a thing has not been done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing! ¹³ As for me, where should I take my disgrace? You will be as one of the fools in Israel. So please, speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you." ¹⁴ Amnon wouldn't listen to her. He grabbed his sister and raped her. ¹⁵ Then Amnon was full of hate for her, hating her with a hate greater than his earlier love for her. And he said to her, Get up and be gone. ¹⁶ And she said to him, No, for this evil is greater than the other that you have done to me, to send me away. But he was not willing to listen to her. ¹⁷ He called his servant and said: "Throw this woman out and lock the door!" ¹⁸ The servant forced her to leave. He locked the door behind her. The king’s unmarried daughters used to wear long robes with sleeves. ¹⁹ Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore the long-sleeved robe which was on her. She put her hand on her head, and she went away, crying out as she went. ²⁰ Absalom her brother said to her, Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother. Don't take this thing to heart. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house. ²¹ King David heard what happened and he was furious! ²² Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. ²³ Two years later Absalom had sheep sheared at Baal Hazor, near the town of Ephraim. He invited all the king's sons to be there. ²⁴ Absalom came to the king, and said, "See now, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant." ²⁵ The king said to Absalom, "No my son, not all of us shall go, so that we not be a burden to you." And he urged him, but he was not willing to go, but he blessed him. ²⁶ Then Absalom said, "If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us." The king said to him, "Why should he go with you?" ²⁷ But Abessalom pressed him, so he sent with him Amnon, and all the king's sons. ²⁸ Absalom commanded his servants saying, Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon', then kill him. Don't be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant! ²⁹ Absalom's servants did to Amnon as Absalom ordered. Then all the king's sons got up, mounted their mules, and fled. ³⁰ While they were still on the road, this rumor came to David: "Absalom has struck down all of the king's sons and none of them has survived." ³¹ Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the ground; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn. ³² But David's brother Shimeah's son Jonadab reported, "Your majesty, don't assume they've killed all of the young men the king's sons only Amnon has died, since that was Absalom's intention from the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar. ³³ Now your majesty, don't be concerned about this rumor that all the king's sons have died, because only Amnon is dead." ³⁴ And Absalom escaped. And the watchman lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, many people went in the way behind him from the side of the mountain in the descent. And the watchman came and told the king, and said, I have seen men by the way of Horonaim, by the side of the mountain. ³⁵ Jonadab said to the king, "Look, the king's sons are coming. It is as your servant said." ³⁶ As soon as he finished speaking, the king's sons arrived. They cried loudly and the king and all his men also cried very bitterly. ³⁷ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. ³⁸ So after Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he was there three years. ³⁹ And the spirit of the king longed to go forth to Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, since he was dead.

² The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. They married any of them they chose.

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.

²⁰ So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they appeared to him as a few days, because he loved her.

³ And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to the girl.

⁶ He left all that he had in Joseph's hand. He did not concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome. ⁷ and after these things his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, Lie with me;

² And sons were born to David in Hebron. And his first-born was Amnon, the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel. ³ his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

² At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king's house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.

¹⁵ Then Amnon was full of hate for her, hating her with a hate greater than his earlier love for her. And he said to her, Get up and be gone.

²⁷ To Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar. She was a beautiful woman.

¹ King Solomon loved many foreign women: the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite;

² the third, Absalom the son of Maacah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith;

⁹ All these were the sons of David, besides his sons by his concubines. And Tamar was their sister.

²⁵ Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, neither let her captivate you with her eyelids.

³⁰ Charm is deceit and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears the LORD shall be praised.

⁴ Ahab returned to his house bitter and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite said to him: "I will not give you the heritage of my fathers." Stretching himself on the bed with his face turned away, he would not eat.

⁸ I adjure you, daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, that you tell him that I am faint with love.

¹⁰ Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

¹ Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman: "Did God really say, you must not eat from any tree in the garden?"

¹ Now at that time, Judah went away from his brothers and became the friend of a man of Adullam named Hirah.

²⁰ Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand. But he did not find her.

²⁰ But Samson's wife was given to the friend who had been his best man.

⁹ Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one.

³² But David's brother Shimeah's son Jonadab reported, "Your majesty, don't assume they've killed all of the young men the king's sons only Amnon has died, since that was Absalom's intention from the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar.

² Joab sent someone to Tekoa to get a wise woman from there. He told her: "Please act like a mourner. Dress in mourning clothes. Do not use any cosmetic lotions. Act like a woman who has been mourning for the dead for a long time.

¹⁹ The king said, “Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?” The woman answered, “As your soul lives, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right hand or to the left from anything that my lord the king has spoken; for your servant Joab urged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of your servant. ²⁰ Your servant Joab has done this thing to change the face of the matter. My lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.”

¹⁰ Nevertheless Haman restrained himself, and went home, and he sent and fetched his friends and Zeresh his wife.

¹⁴ Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said, "Have a pole made 75 feet high, and then in the morning speak to the king and have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go with the king to the banquet happy." This advice pleased Haman, and he had the pole made.

¹³ Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him. His wise friends and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fail, is one of the Jewish people, you won't prevail against him. Instead, you will surely fall before him."

⁶ Many will seek the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.

²² “For my people are foolish. They don’t know me. They are foolish children, and they have no understanding. They are skillful in doing evil, but they don’t know how to do good.”

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness.”

¹⁵ Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

⁹ "‘Never have sexual intercourse with your stepsister, whether she is your father's daughter or your mother's daughter. It makes no difference whether or not she was born in your house.

¹⁷ And if a man takes his sister, daughter of his father or his mother, and has sex relations with her and she with him, it is an act of shame: they are to be cut off before the children of their people; he has had sex relations with his sister, and his sin will be on him.

⁷ And Jezebel his wife said to him, Do you now so act as king over Israel? Rise up, and eat bread, and be yourself! and I will give to you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

¹³ But in all this am I not satisfied as long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate." ¹⁴ Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said, "Have a pole made 75 feet high, and then in the morning speak to the king and have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go with the king to the banquet happy." This advice pleased Haman, and he had the pole made.

⁹ The look of their faces testify against them. They parade their sin like Sodom. They do not hide it. Woe to their soul. For they have brought disaster upon themselves.

¹² Were they ashamed when they had done hateful things? They were not even at all ashamed, nor did they know how to blush. So they shall fall among those who fall. In the time of their punishment they will stumble, says the LORD.

³ Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently. The ruler and judge ask for a bribe; and the powerful man dictates the evil desire of his soul. Thus they conspire together.

³² Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.

²¹ Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father's concubines, that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong."

¹⁸ If you saw a thief, you ran along with him, and have cast in your lot with adulterers. ¹⁹ you spread your mouth to evil and contrive your tongue to deceit:

²⁷ If you stop listening to instruction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.

²⁴ So she came out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" "The head of John the Baptist," she replied. ²⁵ Immediately the girl hurried back to the king with her request, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."

¹⁵ Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way.”

⁶ Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”

³³ He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened.”

¹ Upon this Joseph could not restrain himself before all his attendants, but said, Dismiss all from me. So there was no attendant with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers,

¹⁹ but he himself turned back from the idols that were by Gilgal and said, I have a secret errand to you, king. The king said, Keep silence! All his attendants left him. ²⁰ Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.

¹¹ One day he went into the house to do his work. None of the household servants were there. ¹² She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

² And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land, saw her, he took her and lay with her, and violated her.

⁷ The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter, a thing that ought not to be done.

¹¹ You shall not uncover the nakedness of the daughter of your father's wife, begotten of your father. She is your sister.

²⁹ Then the man will have to give the virgin's father fifty shekels of silver and make her his wife, because he has put shame on her; he may never put her away all his life.

²³ The owner of the house went out to them and said to them, No my brothers, please don't act so wickedly; since this man is my guest don't do this disgraceful thing.

⁶ Then I grabbed my concubine and cut her into pieces, and I sent her throughout all the territory of Israel's inheritance; for they committed a shameful and disgraceful thing in Israel.

²² The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly. ²³ He will die for lack of discipline, and he goes astray because of his great folly.

⁷ And I saw among the simple, I observed among the youth, a young man lacking ⌊sense⌋,

⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man. I pray you, let me bring them out to you, and you do to them as you see fit. But do nothing to these men, for this is why they came under the shadow of my roof.

¹² Besides, she is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother. And she became my wife.

²⁴ Look, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now and you can use them and do with them what seems good unto you, but don't do any such disgusting thing to this man.

²⁵ But if the man found a betrothed damsel in the field and the man forced her and lay with her; then only the man that lay with her shall die; ²⁶ "Do nothing to the woman. There is no sin in the woman worthy of death. This is like the case where a man attacks and murders his neighbor. ²⁷ For he found her in the field, and the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.

⁵ The men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house at night. They intended to kill me, and they raped my concubine and she is dead.

¹¹ "This is what the LORD says: 'Look, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

⁸ And the king returned from the palace garden to the banquet hall, where Haman was lying prostrate on the couch that Esther was on, and the king said, "Will he also molest the queen with me in the house?" As the words went from the king's mouth they covered Haman's face.

¹⁷ And so the Babylonians came to her for the bed of lovemaking; and they defiled her with their fornication, and she was defiled by them, and she turned from them.

³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his other sons because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a coat of many colours.

²³ So when Joseph came to his brothers they stripped him of the variegated robe which he had on

³² They took the robe to their father and said: "We found this. Does it belong to your son?"

³⁰ 'Are they not finding and dividing the plunder? A bedmate or two bedmates for every man; colorful garments for Sisera, plunder of colorful garments, beautifully finished colorful garments, on the neck of the plunderer?'

¹³ All glorious is the king`s daughter within; her clothing is of wrought gold: ¹⁴ In embroidered garments she is presented to the king. Her virgin companions who follow her train will be presented to you.

⁶ And Joshua tore his clothing, and fell on his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they threw dust on their heads.

¹² That very same day, a Benjaminite man ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh, with his garments torn and dirt on his head.

² On the third day, a man came from the camp from being with Saul, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and bowed down.

¹¹ David and all his men tore their clothes in sorrow.

¹ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, he rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried loud and lamentably,

¹² And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and everyone tore his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads,

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

³⁷ "You will also leave this place with your hands over your head, because the LORD has rejected those you trust. They will not help you."

¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all.

²⁴ A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart.

¹⁹ Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

²² Now Eli was very old, and he had heard everything that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women serving at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. ²³ And he said unto them, Why do ye do such things? For I hear from all the people of your evil dealings. ²⁴ No my sons, it is no good report that I hear; you make the LORD's people disobey. ²⁵ If a person sins against another, God will mediate for him, but if a person sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to their father; for the LORD wanted to put them to death.

²⁹ Why do you despise my sacrifice and my offering which I commanded for my dwelling place, while you honored your sons more than me by making yourselves fat from the best of all the offerings of my people Israel?

²⁸ When David heard this afterwards, he said: "I and my kingdom are innocent before the LORD forever for the blood of Abner the son of Ner. ²⁹ Let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house. And let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.

⁵ David flew into a rage at the man and told Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die!

¹⁰ Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'

⁸ Every morning will I destroy all the wicked of the land: to cut off all workers of iniquity from the city of the LORD.

⁵⁰ Then Laban and Bethuel answered, "The thing proceeds from the LORD. We can't speak to you bad or good.

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said to him, Take care thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

²⁹ It is in the power of my hand to hurt you, but the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, 'Be careful that you don't speak to Jacob either good or bad.'

¹⁷ You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, so you shall not bear sin on his account. ¹⁸ "'Do not seek revenge. Never hold a grudge against any of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as you love yourself. I am the LORD.

¹⁸ He who hides hatred has lying lips. He who utters a slander is a fool.

⁹ Instead, take up the matter with your neighbor, and don't betray another person's confidence.

⁴ Fury is cruel, and anger overwhelming, Yet who can stand before jealousy? ⁵ Better is open rebuke than hidden love. ⁶ The wounds of a friend mean well, but the kisses of an enemy are profane.

⁹ Do not be quick in your spirit to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

¹⁵ "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

²⁶ In your anger, do not sin! Do not let the sun set while you remain angry.

³¹ Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice.

⁹ If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness.

¹¹ But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹⁵ Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

¹² And after a time, Bath-shua, Judah's wife, came to her end; and after Judah was comforted for her loss, he went to Timnah, where they were cutting the wool of his sheep, and his friend Hirah of Adullam went with him. ¹³ Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

² There was a man in Maon who had property in Carmel, and the man was very wealthy. He had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats, and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

⁴ While David was in the desert he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.

⁷ Now I have heard that you have shearers. Now while your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat them, and nothing of theirs was missing, all the days they were in Carmel.

³⁶ When Abigail came to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his home. It was like a king's banquet. He was in a good mood and very drunk, so she did not tell him anything until dawn.

⁹ Adonijah sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves at Zoheleth Rock near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's other sons, all the men of Judah, and the king's officials.

¹⁹ He has sacrificed myriads of oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep, and he has invited all of the kings sons, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited your servant Solomon.

²⁵ For he has gone down today and has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king's sons, and the commanders of the army, and Abiathar the priest. Look, they are eating and drinking before him, and say, 'Long live king Adonijah.'

⁴ Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.

¹⁰ And he built towers in the desert and hewed many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the Shephelah and on the plain, along with farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil.

⁸ And David said to Uriah, Go down to your house and wash your feet. And Uriah left the king's house. And a gift from the king went out after him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king's house with all the servants of his master and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ They told David, "Uriah did not go down to his house." David said to Uriah, "Are you not coming from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?" ¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are camped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing." ¹² Then David invited Uriah, "Stay here today, and tomorrow I'll send you back." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem all that day and the next. ¹³ And David invited him, and he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but did not go down to his house. ¹⁴ In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ The letter said: "Put Uriah on the front line where the fighting is the worst. Pull the troops back from him, so that he will be wounded and die."

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

⁶ Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, left Mizpah to meet them. He was crying as he went. When he met them, he said to them: "Come to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam." ⁷ When they came into the city, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, and his men slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.

² And he said, "Behold, my lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you can rise early and go on your way." And they said, "No, but we will spend the night in the square." ³ But he urged them strongly, and they turned aside with him and came into his house. And he made a meal for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

⁷ And when the man rose up to leave, his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again. ⁸ The morning of the fifth day he started to leave. The woman's father said: "Eat something and wait until later in the day." The two men ate together. ⁹ When the man, his concubine and his servant got up to leave, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, Look now, it's nearly evening; please stay all night. Stay here and enjoy yourself, and tomorrow set off early and go home. ¹⁰ But the man wouldn't stay that night; he got up and departed, and went towards Jebus (that is Jerusalem) with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.

⁴ Now when Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, he said to the harvesters, "The LORD be with you." "May the LORD bless you!" they replied.

²² Joab fell with his face to the ground and did obeisance. And he blessed the king, and he said, "Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant." ²³ Then the master told the servant, 'Go out into the streets and the lanes and make the people come in, so that my house may be full.

²⁹ But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.

¹⁵ And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁹ Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

²⁴ A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart. ²⁵ When his speech is charming, do not believe him; for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

²¹ He drank some of its wine. He became drunk and lay undressed inside his tent.

³² come, we cause our father to drink wine, and lie with him, and preserve from our father—a seed.' ³³ And that night they made their father take much wine; and the older daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away. ³⁴ And on the day after, the older daughter said to the younger, Last night I was with my father; let us make him take much wine this night again, and do you go to him, so that we may have offspring by our father. ³⁵ And they caused their father to drink wine that night also. And the younger rose up and lay with him. And he did not know when she lay down, nor when she rose up.

¹⁶ "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live." ¹⁷ But the midwives feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live.

¹⁶ When they came to Balaam they said to him: "This is what Balak son of Zippor says: 'Do not let anything keep you from coming to me. ¹⁷ because I will surely honor you greatly, and all that you say to me I will do. Please, come; curse this people for me.'"

⁹ Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

⁶ The two men sat down and ate and drank together. Then the woman's father told him: "Spend the night and enjoy yourself."

⁹ When the man, his concubine and his servant got up to leave, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, Look now, it's nearly evening; please stay all night. Stay here and enjoy yourself, and tomorrow set off early and go home.

²² As they were enjoying themselves the wicked men of the city surrounded the house, beating on the door; they said to the owner of the house, the old man, Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!

⁷ After Boaz ate and drank, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of barley. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.

¹⁷ The king said to the guards who stood around him, Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they have sided with David, and because they knew that he fled, and didn't tell me. But the servants of the king wouldn't put forth their hand to strike the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod.

³⁶ When Abigail came to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his home. It was like a king's banquet. He was in a good mood and very drunk, so she did not tell him anything until dawn. ³⁷ In the morning, when Nabal was sober, his wife told him what had happened; and his heart failed and he became like a stone. ³⁸ About ten days later the LORD struck Nabal, and he died.

¹⁰ Saul swore to her by the LORD, As the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this.

¹³ The king said to her, Don't be afraid. What do you see? The woman said to Saul, I see a god coming up out of the earth.

¹³ And David invited him, and he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but did not go down to his house.

¹⁵ The letter said: "Put Uriah on the front line where the fighting is the worst. Pull the troops back from him, so that he will be wounded and die."

¹⁶ They went out at noon while Ben-Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the tents, he and the thirty-two kings helping him.

¹⁰ On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he said to Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven of the eunuchs attending King Ahasuerus,

¹⁵ and wine that gladdens the heart of man and oil to make his face to shine and bread that strengthens man's heart.

⁷ Go, eat your bread with mirth, and drink your wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favorably accepted your works.

¹⁹ A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh life merry; but money answereth everything.

² Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines, might drink in them. ³ Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God in Jerusalem. And the king, and his rulers, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them. ⁴ As they drank the wine, they praised gods of gold, silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone. ⁵ In the same hour the fingers of a man's hand appeared, and wrote above the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king's palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote. ⁶ Then his face changed and his thoughts terrified him, and his hip joints gave way and his knees knocked together.

³⁰ In that night Belshazzar king of the Chaldeans is slain,

¹⁰ Entangled like thorns and drunken from drink, they are consumed like dry stubble.

³⁴ But watch yourselves, or your hearts will be weighed down by dissipation, drunkenness, and the worries of life—and that day will spring upon you suddenly like a snare.

²⁹ Peter and the other Apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than man.

²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father.

¹⁹ "'Obey my laws. Never crossbreed different kinds of animals. Do not plant two kinds of crops in your field. Never wear clothes made from two kinds of material.

That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod. ¹⁹ He also killed the people of Nob, the city of the priests. Using his sword, he killed men and women, children and infants, cows, donkeys, and sheep.

⁹ Absalom happened to come face to face with some of David's men. He was riding on a mule. The mule went under the tangled branches of a large tree. Absalom's head became caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair when the mule under him ran away.

³³ and David addressed them. "Take your lord's servants, have my son Solomon ride on my own mule, and take him down to Gihon.

¹¹ So the elders and nobles in authority in his town did as Jezebel said in the letter she sent them. ¹² And they proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth in a chief place among the people. ¹³ Then the two men, scoundrels, came, sat opposite him, and the scoundrels witnessed against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king," so they brought him outside of the city and stoned him with stones, and he died.

⁹ Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men; and he went up to him where he was seated on the top of a hill, and said to him, O man of God, the king has said, Come down. ¹⁰ Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty." Fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty. ¹¹ And again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he spoke and said to him, Man of God, thus says the king: Come down quickly! ¹² And Elijah answered and said unto them, If I be a man of God, let fire come down from heaven, and consume you and your fifty men. And the fire of God came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty.

¹² If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.

²⁹ Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

³⁴ Then Jacob rent his cloaths and put on sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days.

³¹ And David said to Joab, and to all the people with him, Tear your clothes, and gird on sackcloths, and lament before Abner! And king David went behind the bier.

¹⁶ David begged God on behalf of the youngster. He fasted, went inside, and spent the night lying on the ground.

²⁰ And Job rose up and tore his robe, and shaved his head. And he fell down on the ground and worshiped.

⁴¹ So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. Esau said to himself: "The days of mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob."

³ And Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David`s brother; and Jonadab was a very shrewd man.

¹⁴ But the wicked one travails with evil, he conceives malice and gives birth to lies.

¹¹ Rescue those who are being led away to death, and save those who stumble toward slaughter. ¹² if you say, "Look, we do not know this," does not he who weighs hearts perceive it? And he who keeps your soul, he knows and will repay humankind according to his deeds.

¹⁹ and addressed him, "May your majesty not hold me guilty. Don't remember how your servant did wrong the day your majesty the king left Jerusalem. May the king not let it burden his heart,

⁸ Then Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let us go out into the field." And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. ⁹ the LORD asked Cain: "Where is your brother Abel?" "I do not know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" ¹⁰ the LORD said: "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood (life) cries out to me from the ground. ¹¹ "Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. ¹² "When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer (vagabond) on the earth." ¹³ Cain said to the LORD: "My punishment is more than I can bear. ¹⁴ "You are driving me from the land today. I will be hidden from your presence. I will be a restless (homeless) wanderer on the earth. And whoever finds me will kill me."

³⁷ But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. ³⁸ So after Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he was there three years.

¹⁷ A man who is tormented by life blood will be a fugitive until death; no one will support him.

¹⁹ It will be as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a snake bit him.

²¹ His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!"

³³ The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said, "My son Absalom. My son, my son Absalom. I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son."

³ his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;

³⁴ And Absalom escaped. And the watchman lifted up his eyes and looked; and behold, many people went in the way behind him from the side of the mountain in the descent. And the watchman came and told the king, and said, I have seen men by the way of Horonaim, by the side of the mountain.

²³ Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.

³² Absalom said to Joab, "Look, I have sent to you, saying, 'Come here that I may send you to the king to say, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there." ' So then, let me see the face of the king; if there is guilt in me, then let him kill me."

⁸ "When I lived at Geshur in Syria (Aram), I promised the LORD that if he would take me back to Jerusalem, I would worship him in Hebron."

⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. And Isaac was comforted after his mother.

³⁰ And now you have gone because you longed after your father's house. Why have you stolen my gods?

³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down to the grave to my son mourning. And his father wept for him

¹² And after a time, Bath-shua, Judah's wife, came to her end; and after Judah was comforted for her loss, he went to Timnah, where they were cutting the wool of his sheep, and his friend Hirah of Adullam went with him.

³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on longingly for them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything.

¹⁹ David saw that his servants were whispering to one another. He realized (discerned) that the child was dead. "Is the child dead?" David asked them. "Yes, he is dead." They answered. ²⁰ David stood up from the ground and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothing. Then he went to the house of the LORD and worshiped, and he went to his own house. He asked, so they served him food, and he ate. ²¹ His staff asked him, "What's this about? When the child was alive, you fasted and cried. Now that the child has died, you get up and eat!" ²² And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I thought, Who knows? [perhaps] the LORD will be gracious to me, that the child may live. ²³ But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.

² My soul longs and even faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

²⁰ My soul is consumed with longing for your decrees at all times.

²⁶ For he has been longing for all of you and is distressed because you heard he was ill.
