But they would not listen to their father; for the LORD wanted to put them to death. ²⁶ But the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the LORD and with the people. ²⁷ Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him: "Thus says the LORD: 'Did I not clearly reveal myself to the house of your ancestor when they were in Egypt under the house of Pharaoh? ²⁸ And I chose him from all the tribes of Israel to be a priest to me, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to bear an ephod before me. I gave to the house of your ancestor all the offerings made by fire by the Israelites. ²⁹ Why do you despise my sacrifice and my offering which I commanded for my dwelling place, while you honored your sons more than me by making yourselves fat from the best of all the offerings of my people Israel? ³⁰ Therefore the LORD the God of Israel says, 'I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before Me forever'. But now the LORD says, 'Far be it from Me. Those who honour Me I will honour, and those who despise Me shall be despised. ³¹ The days are coming when I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father's house so that there shall not be an old man in your house. ³² And you will see distress in the dwelling place, in all that he does good with Israel. And there will not be an old man in your house all the days. ³³ Any man of yours whom I shall not cut off from My altar, will only blind your eyes with tears and grieve your heart; all the increase of your house shall die in the prime of life. ³⁴ Here's a sign for you your two sons Hophni and Phineas will both die on the same day!

¹⁸ Soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward from his seat by the gate, and his back was broken, and he died; for he was an old man and heavy. Now he had judged Israel twenty years. ¹⁹ His daughter-in-law, Phinehas' wife, was pregnant, near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labour and gave birth, but was overcome by her pains. ²⁰ As she was dying the women attending her said, Don't be afraid, for you have given birth to a son. But she didn't answer, neither did she pay any attention.

¹² As for you, get up. Go to your house. When your feet enter the city, the child will die. ¹³ All Israel will mourn for him and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam will come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

²¹ When Baasha heard this he stopped fortifying Ramah and withdrew to Tirzah.

³³ In the third year of Asa, king of Judah, Baasha, the son of Ahijah, began to reign over all Israel in Tirzah; and he reigned twenty-four years.

⁶ Baasha slept with his fathers, and was buried in Tirzah; and Elah his son reigned in his place. ⁷ And moreover the word of the LORD came against Baasha by the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani and against his house, both because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger with the work of his hands in being like the house of Jeroboam and because he killed him. ⁸ In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel for two years. ⁹ And his servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, plotted against him; and he was in Tirzah drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza the steward of his house in Tirzah.

¹⁵ In the twentieth and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, Zimri reigned in Tizrah seven days. And the camp of Israel was upon Gibbethon the city of the Philistines.

²³ In the thirty-first year of Asa king of Judah, Omri began to reign over Israel. He reigned twelve years, six years in Tirzah.
