¹ After the death of Saul, David returned from defeating the Amalekites and he stayed at Ziklag two days. ² On the third day, a man came from the camp from being with Saul, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and bowed down. ³ David asked: "Where did you come from?" The man answered: "I escaped from Israel’s army." ⁴ "How did the battle go?" David asked. The man said: "Our army turned and ran. Many were wounded and died. King Saul and his son Jonathan are dead." ⁵ And David said to the young man who told him, How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead? ⁶ He answered: »I was on Mount Gilboa. I saw Saul leaning on his spear. The chariots and cavalry of the enemy closed in on him. ⁷ When he turned around and saw me, he called to me, and I said, 'Here I am.' ⁸ He asked me, 'Who are you?' So I answered him, 'I'm an Amalekite!' ⁹ "'Then he said: 'Come here and kill me! I am badly wounded and about to die.' ¹⁰ So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew he would not live after he had fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was upon his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord. ¹¹ David and all his men tore their clothes in sorrow. ¹² And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening, for Saul, and for his son Jonathan, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. ¹³ And David said to the young man who brought the news to him, Where are you from? And he said, I am the son of an Amalekite sojourner. ¹⁴ David said to him, "How were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?" ¹⁵ David called one of the young men and said: »Execute him!« So he struck him and he died. ¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed the LORD's anointed one!'" ¹⁷ So David intoned this song of lament about Saul and his son Jonathan, ¹⁸ He told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow. It is written in the book of Jashar: ¹⁹ "Your glory, Israel, is slain on your high places. How the mighty have fallen. ²⁰ Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph ²¹ Ye mountains of Gilboa, upon you be neither dew nor rain, nor fields whence heave offerings come: For there the shields of the mighty were cast from them, the shield of Saul as though he had not been anointed with oil. ²² From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, and the sword of Saul did not return empty. ²³ Saul and Jonathan! They were beloved and delightful in their lives; and in their death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions. ²⁴ Daughters of Israel, weep over Saul! He clothed you in scarlet luxury and decorated your garments with gold. ²⁵ How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle; Jonathan lies slain on your high places. ²⁶ I am grieved for you, my brother Jonathan; you were very lovely to me; your love to me was wonderful beyond the love of women. ²⁷ How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”

⁶ So that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until the present time.

¹⁷ David fought them from twilight to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled. ¹⁸ David rescued everyone whom the Amalekites had captured, including his two wives. ¹⁹ There was nothing missing, small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that they had taken. David brought back everything. ²⁰ He took all the flocks and herds, which they drove before the other livestock, and he said, This is David's spoil. ²¹ David came to the two hundred men who had been so exhausted that they could not follow David, who had been left behind at the brook Besor, and they went out to meet David and the people who were with him. When David came near them he greeted them. ²² But all the wicked men and troublemakers among David's followers said, Because they didn't go with us we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, just each man's wife and children; then he can take them away and depart. ²³ And David said, My brothers, you shall not do so with that which the LORD has given us. For He has protected us, and has delivered into our hand the company that came against us. ²⁴ Who will listen to what you say? The share of the one who goes down to the battle shall be the same as the share of the one who stays with the baggage; they shall share alike. ²⁵ And so he made it a rule and an order for Israel from that day till now. ²⁶ When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, “Behold, a present for you from the plunder of the LORD's enemies.”

⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men together that same day.

⁴ On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and he saw the place at a distance.

⁷ for look, we were binding sheaves in the field, and look, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and look, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf." ⁸ And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us, or shall you really rule over us? And they hated him still more because of his dreams, and because of his words. ⁹ Joseph had another dream and told his brothers: "I had another dream, in which I saw the sun, the moon, and eleven stars bowing down to me." ¹⁰ And he told it to his father and to his brothers. And his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the ground to you?"

²⁹ Reuben returned to the pit; and saw that Joseph wasn't in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

³⁴ Then Jacob rent his cloaths and put on sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days.

²⁸ They answered: "Your servant our father is still alive and well." Again they bowed down to Joseph.

⁶ And Joshua tore his clothing, and fell on his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they threw dust on their heads.

¹² That very same day, a Benjaminite man ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh, with his garments torn and dirt on his head.

¹⁶ The man said to Eli, "I've just come from the battle line, and I escaped from the battle today." He asked, "What happened, my son?"

⁴¹ The boy left, and then David got up from the south side, and he fell on his face to the ground and bowed three times. And they kissed each other and wept together, but David wept the most.

²³ When Abigail saw David she hurried and alighted from her donkey; she bowed down before David with her face to the ground.

¹⁰ when the man who told me 'Look! Saul is dead!' thought he was bringing me good news, I arrested him and had him killed at Ziklag as the reward I gave him for his news.

⁴ And when the woman of Tekoah spoke to the king, she fell on her face to the ground, and pain him honor, and said, Help, O king.

³² When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his tunic torn, and earth on his head.

¹⁶ “Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Susa, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

¹ On the third day, Esther put on her royal attire and stood in the inner courtyard of the palace in front of the king's quarters. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the throne room, opposite the entrance to the building.

³ Say to God: "How awesome are your works! Because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you."

² After two days will He revive us, on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.

So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. ⁵ When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. ⁶ And Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

¹⁵ The simple believes every word, but the prudent man gives thought to his steps.

² It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.

³ So she went and came and gleaned in the field behind the reapers. And she happened by chance upon the tract of field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.

⁹ If it goes up to its own territory, to Beth Shemesh, then He has done us this great evil; but if not, then we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us.

³¹ Now a priest happened to be going down that way, and on seeing him passed by on the other side.

⁵⁴ whereupon he cried hastily to the young man who carried his armour, and said to him, Draw my sword, and kill me, that they may not say, A woman killed him. So his servant run him through, and he died.

¹² Saul said: "Listen here, son of Ahitub!" He responded: "Here I am lord."

⁶ Now, when Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came in unto David, he fell on his face and did homage. And David said, Mephibosheth? And he said, Lo! thy servant.

⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I: send me.

¹ "I permitted myself to be sought by those who did not ask for me. Those who did not seek me found me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said: 'Here I am, here I am.'

⁷ Then they turned back and came to En-Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). And they defeated the whole territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazazon-Tamar.

⁸ Then the Amalekites came and fought with the Israelites at Rephidim. ⁹ Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some men for us and go out to fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I'll stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand." ¹⁰ So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel would win, but as soon as he put his hands down, the Amalekites would start to win. ¹² When Moses' hands became heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, and so his hands were steady until the sun went down. ¹³ Joshua defeated Amalek and his army with the sword. ¹⁴ Then the Lord said to Moses, Write this in a book to keep it in remembrance; and rehearse it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will entirely blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. ¹⁵ Moses built an altar and named it "The LORD Is My Banner." ¹⁶ He said, "A hand upon the throne of the LORD. The LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.'"

²⁰ And he looked at Amalek, uttered his oracle, and said, "Amalek is first of the nations, but his future will be forever ruin."

¹⁷ "Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came out from Egypt. ¹⁸ how when you were very tired and weary, they lay in wait for you on the road and eliminated everyone who was lagging behind. They had no fear of God. ¹⁹ "When the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess. You will blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget.

³ Now, go and attack Amalek. Completely destroy all that they have. Don't spare them, but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, both ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"

⁸ David and his men raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites. Their territory extends from Telaim to Shur and Egypt.

¹ When David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and set it on fire.

¹³ David said to him, "To whom do you belong and where are you from?" The Egyptian replied, "I'm a young Egyptian man, the slave of an Amalekite man. My master abandoned me, because I got sick three days ago.

⁷ Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; just as I have done, so God has repaid to me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod.

⁴ And Saul said to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised ones come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armor-bearer would not, for he was very much afraid. So Saul took a sword and fell on it. ⁵ When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.

³⁰ He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought a great quantity of plunder out of the city.

¹² Then he brought out the king's son, and put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, “Long live the king!”

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!

² For with the same judgment you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

³¹ And David said to Joab, and to all the people with him, Tear your clothes, and gird on sackcloths, and lament before Abner! And king David went behind the bier.

³¹ Then the king arose, and tore his garments, and lay on the ground; and all his servants stood by with their clothes torn.

¹⁴ But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

³⁵ Everyone tried to persuade David to have a meal while there was still daylight, but David took an oath by saying, "May God to do like this to me and more, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!"

¹³ But when they were sick, I wore sackcloth. I humbled myself with fasting. My prayer returned unanswered. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as he who weeps for his mother.

¹⁷ Do not rejoice when your enemy falls. Do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles.

¹ Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

⁶ who drink bowls of wine, and they anoint with the best of oils; but they are not grieved for the breaking of Joseph!

⁴⁴ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I do not inwardly burn?

⁸ Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble in spirit.

⁸ He asked me, 'Who are you?' So I answered him, 'I'm an Amalekite!'

⁸ I speak to him audibly and in visions and not in riddles. If he gazes at the image of the LORD, why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"

⁶ And he said to his men, the LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD`s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, for he is the anointed of the LORD.

⁹ But David said to Abishai, "Destroy him not — for who can lay his hand on the LORD's anointed and be guiltless?"

⁴ And Saul said to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised ones come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armor-bearer would not, for he was very much afraid. So Saul took a sword and fell on it.

¹⁵ "Do not touch my anointed ones. Do my prophets no harm."

¹⁰ Such punishment is specially reserved for those who indulge the corrupt desires of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and self-willed, these men are unafraid to slander angelic majesties.

²⁰ He said to Jether his firstborn, "Get up, and kill them." But the youth did not draw his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

¹⁷ The king said to the guards who stood around him, Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they have sided with David, and because they knew that he fled, and didn't tell me. But the servants of the king wouldn't put forth their hand to strike the priests of the LORD. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests." Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests. That day he killed eighty-five men who carry the linen ephod.

¹⁰ when the man who told me 'Look! Saul is dead!' thought he was bringing me good news, I arrested him and had him killed at Ziklag as the reward I gave him for his news. ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house on his bed, should I not now require his blood from your hand, and rid the earth of you?” ¹² David commanded his young men, and they killed them, cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in Abner's grave in Hebron.

²⁵ So King Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah son of Jehoiada,—and he fell upon him, that he died.

³⁴ So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and struck him down, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.

⁴⁶ Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and fell upon him, and he died. So the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

¹² He frustrates the plans of the crafty; so that what they work for never succeeds.

¹⁸ A wicked man earns deceitful wages, but he who sows righteousness [has] a sure reward.

⁵ "I will require your lifeblood as an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. I will demand an accounting from each man for the life of his fellow man. ⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed. For in the image of God he made man.

⁹ For he who curses his father or his mother will surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother; his blood will be upon him.

¹¹ And the man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness. Both of them will surely be put to death, their blood will be upon them. ¹² "'If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have committed a perversion; their blood shall be upon them. ¹³ And a man who lies with a male as one lies with a woman, both of them have done a detestable thing; they shall certainly be put to death; their blood shall be on them.

¹⁶ "'If a woman approaches any animal, and lies down with it, you shall kill the woman, and the animal: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

²⁷ “'A man or a woman that is a medium or is a wizard shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones. Their blood shall be upon themselves.'”

¹⁰ so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so guilt for blood be upon you.

¹⁹ Then if anyone goes out of your house into the street, his blood will be on his head, we will not be responsible; but if any damage comes to anyone in the house, his blood will be on our heads.

²⁴ that the violence against Jerubbaal's seventy sons, even their blood, might be put on their brother Abimelech who killed them, and on the leaders of Shechem, who made his hands strong to kill his brothers.

¹⁰ So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew he would not live after he had fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was upon his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.

²⁸ When David heard this afterwards, he said: "I and my kingdom are innocent before the LORD forever for the blood of Abner the son of Ner. ²⁹ Let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all his father's house. And let there not fail from the house of Joab one who has an issue, or who is a leper, or who leans on a staff, or who falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.

³² The LORD will repay him for his bloodshed because, without my father David's consent he attacked and murdered two men more righteous and better than he, Ner's son Abner, the commander of Israel's army and Jether's son Amasa, commander of Judah's army. ³³ So shall their blood return on the head of Joab, and on the head of his descendants forever. But to David, and to his descendants, and to his house, and to his throne, there shall be peace forever from the LORD."

³⁷ If you ever leave and cross the Kidron Brook, you can be sure that you'll die. You'll be responsible for your own death."

⁶ "Your own mouth condemns you, not mine! Your own lips testify against you.

² If you have been trapped by words of your mouth, Have been seized by sayings of your mouth,

¹³ That giveth upon usury, and that taketh an increase: shall such a one live? he shall not live. Seeing he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die, his blood shall be upon him.

⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul.

²⁵ All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children."

²² He said to him, 'I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a hard man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?

²⁶ Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the Law says, it says to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

¹¹ And when the Kenaaniy who settle the land, see the mourning in the Threshingfloor of Thorns, they say, This is a heavy mourning to the Misrayim: so they call the name thereof Abel Misrayim - beyond Yarden.

²⁵ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah; and all the singing men and the singing women spoke of Josiah in their lamentations to this day and made them an ordinance in Israel, which are written in the lamentations.

¹⁷ Thus says the LORD Almighty: "Consider closely, and call for the wailing women, so that they come, and for the skillful women, so that they come. ¹⁸ And let them make haste and take up a lament over us, so that our eyes may run down with tears, and waters flow from our eyelids. ¹⁹ For a sound of mourning is heard from Zion: 'How we're ruined! Our shame is very great, because we have left the land, because our houses are torn down.'" ²⁰ For hear, O women, the word of the LORD, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters a lamentation, and each woman her neighbor a lament. ²¹ For death has come into our windows, it has entered into our fortresses, to cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the public squares.

⁸ "Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your father's sons will bow down before you.

¹⁰ Remember the day that you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me Assemble me the people and I will make them hear My words, that they may learn to fear Me all the days that they live on the land and that they may teach their children.

¹³ The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day.

⁷ For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as the LORD our God is whenever we call on him? ⁸ And what other great nation has for it just rules and regulations just like this whole law that I am setting before you today?

⁸ The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

²³ Saul and Jonathan! They were beloved and delightful in their lives; and in their death they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles; they were stronger than lions.

²⁵ How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle; Jonathan lies slain on your high places.

²⁷ How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”

² On that day the branch of the LORD shall become beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall become the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel.

² He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him. Nothing in his appearance will make us desire him.

¹ How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger! He has cast down the beauty of Israel from heaven to the earth and has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

⁷ So I became shepherd of the flock marked for slaughter, paying attention to the oppressed of the flock. I took two staffs naming one "Pleasant" and the other one "Union" and then I pastured the flock.

¹⁰ And I took my staff Kindness and broke it, to break my covenant that I had made with all the peoples.

²⁰ Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand and went out with all the women behind her with tambourines and dancing. ²¹ Miriam sang to them, "Sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted! The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea."

²⁶ I said: "I will scatter them, erasing their memory from the human race, ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should misunderstand, and lest they should say, Our hand has triumphed, and the LORD has not done all this.

³⁴ When Jephthah arrived at his home in Mizpah surprise! it was his daughter who came out to meet him, playing tambourines and dancing. She was his one and only child. Except for her, he had no other son or daughter.

¹⁹ The Spirit of the LORD came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty men of them and took their belongings and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. His anger was burning, and he went up to his father's house.

²³ Then the lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they sung praises to their god, saying, Our god hath delivered our enemy into our hands; him who wasted our land, and multiplied the number of our slain.

²⁶ David asked the men who were standing by him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? Indeed, who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"

³⁶ Your servant killed both the lion and the bear. And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.

⁶ Now when David returned, after he slew the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with timbrels of joy, and cornets.

⁸ The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. ⁹ So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor. Then they sent messengers around in the land of the Philistines to proclaim victory in the temples of their idols and to the people.

²⁷ And look! I stretched out my hand against you, and I reduced your portion, and I gave you into the desire of your haters, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed because of your lewd conduct.

⁵⁷ before your wickedness was uncovered, as at the time of your reproach of the daughters of Syria, and of all her neighbors, the daughters of the Philistines who hated you from all around.

¹⁰ Tell it not in Gath, weep not at all; at Beth-le-aphrah roll thyself in the dust.

²³ Curse Meroz, said the angel of the LORD. Curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.

¹ Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it over his head and kissed him and said, "Has not the LORD anointed you as leader over his inheritance?

³ "May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said: 'A boy is born!'" ⁴ »Let that day turn to darkness. May God above not care about it. Let no light shine upon it. ⁵ "Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it once more. May a cloud settle over it and may blackness overwhelm its light. ⁶ "About that night, may thick darkness seize it. May it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months. ⁷ "Let the night be barren and may no shout of joy be heard in it. ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to rouse Leviathan; ⁹ "Let its morning stars become dark and cause it to wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn, ¹⁰ for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.

⁶ "It will turn into a desert, neither pruned nor cultivated. It will be covered with thorns and briars. I will command the clouds not to send rain."

⁵ They set the table, they spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink; Rise up, captains, oil the shields,

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born; the day wherein my mother bore me, let it not be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man, that brought my father the tidings, to make him glad, saying, "Thou hast gotten a son." ¹⁶ May that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without compassion. Let him hear a cry in the morning, and a battle cry at noon,

¹⁵ "The Sovereign LORD says: 'On the day when it went down to the grave I caused cries of sorrow. I closed the deep over it and held back its rivers. Its many waters were stopped up, and I made Lebanon mourn for it. All the trees of the field wilted away on account of it.

⁹ The offering and libation are withheld from the house of the LORD. The priests mourn, the ministers of the LORD.

¹⁴ Who knoweth, he may turn and grieve,—and leave behind him, a blessing, a meal-offering and a drink-offering, to the LORD your God?

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh, of the blood of the slain and of the captivity, of the bare head of the enemies.

⁶ Jonathan said to his armor bearer, "Come, let's go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised ones. Perhaps the LORD will work for us, since nothing prevents the LORD from delivering, whether by many or by a few." ⁷ His armor bearer answered him: »Do whatever you have in mind. Go ahead! I agree with you.« ⁸ Then Jonathan said, Now we will go over to these men and let them see us. ⁹ If they say to us, 'Stay there until we come to you,' then we will stay where we are and not go up to them. ¹⁰ But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us." ¹¹ So they revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, and the Philistines said, Look, the Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in! ¹² The men of the garrison shouted to Jonathan and his armour bearer, Come up to us and we will show you something! Jonathan said to his armour bearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel. ¹³ Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet and his armour bearer followed, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour bearer followed and killed behind him. ¹⁴ That first slaughter by Jonathan and his armour bearer killed about twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

⁴ Jonathan stripped himself of the robe he was wearing and gave it to David with his tunic and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

⁶ The sword of the LORD is filled with blood; it is made fat with fatness, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. ⁷ Wild oxen will be killed with them, young bulls along with rams. Their land will be drenched with blood. Their dust will be covered with fat.

⁴⁹ "the LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand,

¹⁸ And they, on the seventh day before the sun went down, said to him: What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said to them: If you had not ploughed with my heifer, you had not found out my riddle.

¹ When David finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan became a close friend to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself.

² Jonathan said to him, "Far from it! You won't die. Look, my father never does anything, great or small, without telling me; so why should my father hide this thing from me? It's not like that!"

¹ The Philistines fought against Israel, and the army of Israel fled before the Philistines. They fell slain on Mount Gilboa. ² The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. ³ The battle went badly against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him badly.

¹⁸ The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai and Asahel: and Asahel was as swift of foot as a wild gazelle.

²⁰ Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a brave man from Kabzeel who did some amazing things. He killed two of Moab's best fighters. On a snowy day he went down into a pit and killed a lion.

⁸ Some Gadites joined David in the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men trained for war, who could handle shield and spear; whose faces were like the faces of lions, and they were as swift as the gazelles on the mountains:

²⁶ They pass by like a ship made of reeds, like an eagle swooping down on its prey.

³⁰ The lion, mighty among the beasts, retreats before nothing.

¹³ Look, he comes up like the clouds, and his chariots are like the whirlwind, his horses are swifter than eagles, woe to us, for we are devastated.

¹⁹ Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the sky. They chased us on the mountains, they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

³⁰ 'Are they not finding and dividing the plunder? A bedmate or two bedmates for every man; colorful garments for Sisera, plunder of colorful garments, beautifully finished colorful garments, on the neck of the plunderer?'

¹² Kings of armies fled away; and she who stayed at home divided the plunder.

²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household; for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

¹⁶ Moreover LORD said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet, ¹⁷ therefore the Lord brings sores on the crown of the head of the women of Zion, and the LORD will make their scalps bald." ¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets and the headbands and the crescent necklaces, ¹⁹ the earrings, the bracelets, the veils, ²⁰ the headdresses, the ankle chains, the sashes, the perfume bottles, the charms, ²¹ the signet rings, the nose rings, ²² the fine robes, the capes, the cloaks, the purses, ²³ and the mirrors and the linen garments, and the turbans and the wraps. ²⁴ It shall happen that instead of sweet spices, there shall be rottenness; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of well set hair, baldness; instead of a robe, a wearing of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. ²⁵ Your men shall fall by the sword, and your warriors in battle. ²⁶ and her gates shall lament and mourn; and, stripped, she shall sit upon the ground.

³² Can a virgin forget her finery, a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.

⁹ and I would have the women dress becomingly, with modesty and self-control, not with plaited hair or gold or pearls or costly clothes, ¹⁰ but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.

³ Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, ⁴ but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. ⁵ For so of old the holy women who hoped in God adorned themselves. They were submissive to their own husbands,

¹³ Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet and his armour bearer followed, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour bearer followed and killed behind him. ¹⁴ That first slaughter by Jonathan and his armour bearer killed about twenty men in an area of about half an acre. ¹⁵ Then panic struck the whole Philistine army, those in the camp, in the field, and among all the outposts and raiding parties, and the ground shook. There was panic.

¹ When David finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan became a close friend to David, and Jonathan loved him as himself. ² Saul took David that day and did not let him return to his father's house. ³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. ⁴ Jonathan stripped himself of the robe he was wearing and gave it to David with his tunic and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

² Jonathan told David: "My father Saul is seeking to kill you. Please be on guard in the morning, and stay in a secret place and hide yourself.

¹⁷ Jonathan made David vow again out of his love for him, because he loved him as himself.

¹⁶ And Saul's son Jonathan went to David in Horesh, and made his hands strong in God;

¹² Elisha saw it, and he cried, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” He saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes, and tore them in two pieces.

¹⁴ Now when Elisha was sick, with the sickness of which he died; Joas king of Israel went down to him, and wept over him and said, My father! my father! The chariot of Israel and the horseman thereof!

⁹ He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire.

⁹ And those who are living in the towns of Israel will go out and make fires of the instruments of war, burning the body-covers and the breastplates, the bows and the arrows and the sticks and the spears, and for seven years they will make fires of them: ¹⁰ And they shall not take wood out of the field and shall not cut down out of the forest. For they shall burn the weapons with fire. And they shall plunder those who plundered them, and rob those who robbed them, declares the Sovereign LORD.
