³² Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, because she said: »Certainly, the LORD has seen my misery. Now my husband will love me!« ³³ And she conceived again, and bare a son, and said. Because the LORD heard that, I, was I hated, he gave me, this one also. So she called his name Simeon. ³⁴ And she was with child again, and gave birth to a son; and said, Now at last my husband will be united to me, because I have given him three sons: so he was named Levi. ³⁵ Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She said: "This time I will praise the LORD." So she named him Judah (Praise). Then she stopped having children.

⁵ Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a son. ⁶ Then Rachel said, God has been my judge, and has given ear to my voice, and has given me a son; so he was named Dan. ⁷ And Rachel's slave woman Bilhah conceived again, and bore Jacob a second son. ⁸ Rachel said: "I have struggled hard with my sister, and I have won!" So she named the boy Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a son. ¹¹ Then Leah said, "Good fortune!" And she called his name Gad. ¹² And Leah's slave woman Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. ¹³ Then Leah said, "How happy am I! For women have called me happy." So she called his name Asher. ¹⁴ During the wheat harvest Reuben went out into the fields. He found some mandrake plants. He brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah: "Please, give me some of your son's mandrake plants." ¹⁵ She said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes, also?" Rachel said, "Therefore he will lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes." ¹⁶ When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him. And she said, "Come in to me, for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." And he slept with her that night. ¹⁷ God listened to Leah, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son. ¹⁸ Then Leah said, God has made payment to me for giving my servant-girl to my husband: so she gave her son the name Issachar. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son. ²⁰ Leah said: "God has presented me with a wonderful gift. This time my husband will honor me, because I have given him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. ²¹ And afterwards she gave birth to a daughter and called her name Dinah. ²² Then God remembered Rachel. God listened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, "God has taken away my disgrace." ²⁴ She named him Joseph. She said: "May the LORD give me another son."

²⁸ And he said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel: for in your fight with God and with men you have overcome.

¹⁸ As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.

²² While Israel lived in that region, Reuben went to bed with his father's concubine Bilhah. Israel heard about it. Jacob had twelve sons. ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob's firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ The sons of Rachel's slave Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ The sons of Zilpah, the female servant of Leah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob ⁹ The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all. ¹⁶ The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malchiel. ¹⁸ These are the children of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah, and Jacob had these sixteen children by her. ¹⁹ The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ In Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest from the city of On. ²¹ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all. ²³ The son of Dan: Hushim. ²⁴ The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These were the children of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, seven persons. ²⁶ All the souls who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct descendants, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were sixty-six. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph which were born to him in Egypt, two souls: to the house of Jacob coming to Egypt, seventy.

⁴ Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father's bed; then defiled you it: he went up to my couch. ⁵ "Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶ My soul, don't come into their council. My glory, don't be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; and their wrath, for it is cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. ⁸ "Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your father's sons will bow down before you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp. My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him? ¹⁰ The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. To him will the obedience of the peoples be. ¹¹ "He will tie his donkey to a grapevine, his colt to the best vine. He will wash his clothes in wine, his garments in the blood of grapes. ¹² "His eyes are darker than wine. His teeth are whiter than milk. ¹³ Zebulun shall live at the sea shore. And he shall be a haven for ships, and his border beside Sidon. ¹⁴ "Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the saddlebags. ¹⁵ "When he sees that his resting place is good and that the land is pleasant, he will bend his back to the burden and will become a slave laborer. ¹⁶ Dan will be the judge of his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷ Dan will be a serpent on the trail, an adder in the path, that bites the horse's heels, so that his rider falls backward. ¹⁸ I waited for thy deliverance, the LORD. ¹⁹ "Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders. He will strike back at their heels. ²⁰ "Asher's food will be rich. He will provide delicacies fit for a king. ²¹ "Naphtali is a doe set free, who bears beautiful fawns. ²² "Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a spring. His branches run over the wall. ²³ The archers have fiercely attacked him, and shot at him, and hated him: ²⁴ »His bow stayed steady! His arms remained limber because of the help of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the name of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, ²⁵ even by the God of your father, who will help you, by the Almighty, who will bless you, with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. ²⁶ »The blessings of your father are greater than the blessings of the oldest mountains and the riches of the ancient hills. May these blessings rest on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the prince among his brothers. ²⁷ “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. At evening he will divide the plunder.” ²⁸ All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, each according to their blessing.

² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ And these are the names of the men who will assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; ⁶ from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; ⁷ from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; ⁸ from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; ⁹ from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. ¹⁰ for the sons of Joseph:for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur;" ¹¹ From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; ¹² from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; ¹³ from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; ¹⁴ from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; ¹⁵ For Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan.

⁴ And these are their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; ⁵ from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; ⁶ from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ⁷ from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; ⁸ from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; ⁹ from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; ¹⁰ from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; ¹¹ from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; ¹² from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; ¹³ from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; ¹⁴ from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; ¹⁵ from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki.

These are the same Dathan and Abiram who were appointed of the community, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against the LORD, ¹⁰ And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that band died, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign. ¹¹ The children of Korah, however, did not die. ¹² The sons of Simeon by their families:through Nemuel the Nemuelite family; through Jamin the Jaminite family; through Jachin the Jachinite family; ¹³ through Zerah the Zerahite family; through Shaul the Shaulite family. ¹⁴ These were the clans of the Simeonites, twenty-two thousand two hundred. ¹⁵ The sons of Gad by their families:through Zephon the Zephonite family; through Haggi the Haggite family; through Shuni the Shunite family; ¹⁶ through Ozni the Oznite family; through Eri the Erite family; ¹⁷ through Arod the Arodite family; through Areli the Arelite family. ¹⁸ These are the families of Gad, of which the whole number was forty thousand five hundred. ¹⁹ Er and Onan were sons of Judah, but they died in Canaan. ²⁰ The sons of Judah were, by their families:through Shelah the Shelanite family; through Perez the Perezite family; through Zerah the Zerahite family. ²¹ The sons of Perez were:through Hezron the Hezronite family; through Hamul the Hamulite family. ²² These are the families of Judah as they were numbered, seventy-six thousand, five hundred. ²³ The sons of Issachar by their families:through Tola the Tolaite family; through Puah the Puanite family; ²⁴ through Jashub the Jashubite family; through Shimron the Shimronite family. ²⁵ These are the kindreds of Issachar, whose number was sixty-four thousand three hundred. ²⁶ The sons of Zebulun by their families:through Sered the Seredite family; through Elon the Elonite family; through Jahleel the Jahleelite family; ²⁷ These are the kindreds of Zabulon, whose number was sixty thousand five hundred. ²⁸ The sons of Joseph by their kindred, Manasses and Ephraim. ²⁹ The sons of Manasseh were:through Machir the Machirite family, and Machir begat Gilead; through Gilead the Gileadite family. ³⁰ These were the sons of Gilead:through Jezer the Jezerite family; through Helek the Helekite family; ³¹ through Asriel the Asrielite family; through Shechem the Shechemite family; ³² through Shemida the Shemidaite family; through Hepher the Hepherite family. ³³ Zelophehad, son of Hepher, had no sons-only daughters. Their names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These are the kindreds of Manasseh, in number fifty two thousand and seven hundred. ³⁵ These are the sons of Ephraim according to their families: of Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite family; of Becher, the Becherite family; of Tahan, the Tahanite family. ³⁶ And these were the descendants of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites. ³⁷ These are the families of Ephraim as they were numbered, thirty-two thousand, five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph by their families. ³⁸ The sons of Benjamin by their families:through Bela the Belaite family; through Ashbel the Ashbelite family; through Ahiram the Ahiramite family; ³⁹ through Shupham the Shuphamite family; through Hupham the Huphamite family. ⁴⁰ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman:through Ard the Ardite family; through Naaman the Naamite family. ⁴¹ These are the sons of Benjamin by their kindreds, whose number was forty-five thousand six hundred. ⁴² These were the sons of Dan by their families:through Shuham the Shuhamite family. These were the families of Dan by their families. ⁴³ All were Suhamites, whose number was sixty-four thousand four hundred. ⁴⁴ The sons of Asher by their families:through Jimna the Jimnite family; through Ishvi the Ishvite family; through Beriah the Beriite family, ⁴⁵ through sons of Beriah, through Heber the Heberite family; through Malchiel the Malchielite family. ⁴⁶ Asher had a daughter named Serah. ⁴⁷ These are the kindreds of Asher, in number fifty three thousand and four hundred. ⁴⁸ The sons of Naphtali by their families:through Jahzeel the Jahzeelite family; through Guni the Gunite family; ⁴⁹ through Jezer the Jezerite family; through Shillem the Shillemite family. ⁵⁰ These were the families of Naphtali. The total number of men was forty-five thousand four hundred. ^{51 52} the LORD said to Moses: ⁵³ The land shall be divided to those for an inheritance, according to the number of names. ⁵⁴ to many, greaten the inheritance and to few, diminish the inheritance: give every man his inheritance according to the mouth of those mustered by him. ⁵⁵ But the land shall be divided by lot. They shall inherit according to the names of the tribes of their fathers. ⁵⁶ Their inheritance must be divided according to the lot between the larger and smaller groups." ⁵⁷ These were the mustered ones of the Levites by their families:through Gershon the Gershonite family; through Kohath the Kohathite family; through Merari the Merarite family. ⁵⁸ These were the families of Levi: the Libnite family, the Hebronite family, the Mahlite family, the Mushite family, and the Korahite family. Kohath was the ancestor of Amram. ⁵⁹ The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born in Egypt. She gave birth to Amram's children: Aaron, Moses, and their sister Miriam. ⁶⁰ Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁶¹ Yet Nadab and Abihu died when they offered alien fire before the LORD. ⁶² The total number of all the Levite males at least one month old was twenty-three thousand. They were not counted along with the other Israelites, because they were given no land of their own. ⁶³ These were the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the Israelites on the desert-plateau of Moab on the Jordan across Jericho. ⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the Israelites in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ for the LORD had said to them that they would die, yea die in the wilderness. And not a man of them was left save Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁵ Of the tribe of Judah, 12,000 were sealed; Of the tribe of Reuben, 12,000; Of the tribe of Gad, 12,000; ⁶ Of the tribe of Asher, 12,000; Of the tribe of Naphtali, 12,000; Of the tribe of Manasseh, 12,000; ⁷ 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, ⁸ Of the tribe of Zebulun, 12,000; Of the tribe of Joseph, 12,000; Of the tribe of Benjamin, 12,000.
