¹⁴ and didn’t inquire of the LORD. Therefore he killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

¹¹ the LORD answered: "Did I free you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, and the Philistines? ¹² the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppress you? And ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hands. ¹³ Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods: why I will deliver you no more. ¹⁴ "Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them save you in your time of trouble." ¹⁵ But the people of Israel said to the LORD: "We have sinned. Do to us what seems best to you, only please, save us today!" ¹⁶ When they put away their foreign gods and served the LORD, he brought Israel's misery to an end.

¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not stand. the LORD has sought Him a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be leader over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, the LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to your neighbor who is better than you.

¹ And the LORD said to Samuel, How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem. For I have seen a king for Me among his sons.

¹¹ "Are these all the sons you have?" Samuel asked. "There is still the youngest one," Jesse answered. "He is tending sheep." Samuel responded: "Send someone to get him. We will not continue until he gets here." ¹² He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with a beautiful face and handsome appearance. the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is the one. ¹³ Then Samuel took the bottle of oil, and put the oil on him there among his brothers: and from that day the spirit of the Lord came on David with power. So Samuel went back to Ramah.

⁶ And Saul enquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets.

¹⁷ the LORD has done to you as He spoke by me. the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbour, to David.

⁹ May God do to Abner, and more so, if I do not do to David as the LORD has sworn, ¹⁰ To transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba’.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel.

²³ These are the numbers of the chiefs of the armed men, ready for war, who came to David at Hebron, to give the kingdom of Saul into his hands, as the Lord had said.

¹³ If anyone gives back evil for good, evil will never go away from his house.

⁷ But this is not what is in his mind, and this is not his design; but his purpose is destruction, and the cutting off of more and more nations.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews with it? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood.

³ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face. Should I at all be inquired of by them? ⁴ Therefore speak to them, and say to them, So says the Sovereign LORD: Every man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him in it by the host of his idols; ⁵ "'I will do this to recapture the hearts of the nation of Israel. They have deserted me because of their disgusting idols.'" ⁶ Therefore say to the house of Israel, So says the Sovereign LORD: Repent and turn from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
