¹³ Saul died because of his unfaithfulness to the LORD. He did not obey the word of the LORD (YHWH). He asked a medium to request information from a dead person.

¹⁸ You will not allow a sorceress to live.

³¹ Regard not mediums, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

⁶ As for the person who turns to the mediums and the soothsayers to prostitute after them, I will set my face against that person, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people.

¹⁰ There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in fire, practices divination, interprets omens, practices sorcery, ¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead. ¹² For everyone doing these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable things the LORD your God is driving them out from before you. ¹³ You must be blameless before the LORD your God. ¹⁴ For these nations that you shall dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.

¹³ Then Samuel said to Saul, "You have behaved foolishly! You have not kept the command of the LORD your God which he commanded you. For then, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not stand. the LORD has sought Him a man after His own heart, and the LORD has appointed him to be leader over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.

² Thus says the LORD of Armies, 'I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel, opposing them when they came up out of Egypt.

²³ For rebellion is like the sin of divination; arrogance is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you from being king!"

⁷ Saul ordered his officials: "Find me a woman who is a medium. I will go and consult her." "There is one in Endor," they answered. ⁸ Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothing, and went with two men to the woman by night. He said, Please consult a familiar spirit for me and bring me up the one I name. ⁹ The woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and spiritists out of the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?" ¹⁰ Saul swore to her by the LORD, As the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this. ¹¹ So the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" He said, "Bring up Samuel for me." ¹² When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice, and said to Saul, Why have you deceived me? You are Saul! ¹³ The king said to her, Don't be afraid. What do you see? The woman said to Saul, I see a god coming up out of the earth. ¹⁴ Saul said to her, "What does he look like?" She said, "An old man is coming up, and he's wrapped in a robe." Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed low to the ground and prostrated himself. ¹⁵ Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up? Saul answered, I am very distressed, for the Philistines make war against me and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you so that you can tell me what I should do. ¹⁶ Then Samuel said, "Why do you ask me, since the LORD has turned away from you and has become your enemy? ¹⁷ the LORD has done to you as He spoke by me. the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbour, to David. ¹⁸ Because you didn't obey the LORD and didn't execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this to you today. ¹⁹ the LORD will deliver Israel and you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. the LORD will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. ²⁰ Saul immediately fell down full-length on the ground. He was terrified because of Samuel's words, and he had no strength because he had not eaten food all day and all night.

⁶ He made his son to pass through the fire, and practiced sorcery, and practiced divination, and consulted mediums, and spiritists: he worked much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

¹⁹ Now if they tell you, "Consult the ghosts and the spirits, those who chirp and those who mutter. Should not a people consult its gods, the dead on behalf of the living,

⁹ Prior to that time, a man named Simon had practiced sorcery in the city and amazed the people of Samaria. He claimed to be someone great, ¹⁰ and all the people, from the least to the greatest, heeded his words and said, “This man is the divine power called the Great Power.” ¹¹ They paid close attention to him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery.

¹⁶ One day as we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl with a spirit of clairvoyance, who earned a large income for her masters by fortune-telling. ¹⁷ This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” ¹⁸ She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” And the spirit left her at that very moment.
