1 Now when he had finished all these his sayings in the hearing of the people, he went to Capernaum,
2 where a certain centurion's servant, who was dear to his master, was sick and at the point of death.
3 And the centurion, having heard of Jesus, had sent to him the elders of the Jews with a request that he would come and cure his servant.
4 And when they came to Jesus, they pressed him earnestly, saying, He is worthy of this favour;
5 for he loveth our nation, and it was he who built the synagogue for us.
6 So Jesus went with them. But when he was now at no great distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Sir, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof:
7 and for that reason I did not think myself worthy to come to thee. Say but a word, and my servant will be healed.
8 For even I, who am a man subject to authority, having soldiers under me, say to one, Go; and he goeth: and to another, Come; and he cometh: and to my slave, Do this; and he doeth it.
9 When Jesus heard this, he admired him; and turning to the multitude that followed him, he said, I say to you, I have not found such an instance of faith even in Israel.
10 And when they, who had been sent, returned to the house, they found the servant well who had been sick.
11 And on the day following, he went to a city called Nain, accompanied by many of his disciples, and a great crowd.
12 And as he approached the gate of the city, behold the people were carrying out a dead man to be buried; the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And there was a great multitude of the city with her.
13 And when the Lord beheld her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, Weep not.
14 Then he advanced and touched the bier, [now the bearers had stopped] and he said, Young man, I say to thee, Arise.
15 Thereupon he who had been dead, sat up and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
16 And a dread fell upon all; and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is risen up among us, and God hath visited his people.
17 And his fame spread through all Judea and through all the neighbouring country.
18 When John was informed by his disciples of all these things,
19 he called two of them and sent them to Jesus, saying, Thou art the one coming: may we expect another?
20 And when the men came to him, they said, John the baptist hath sent us to thee saying, Thou art the one coming: may we expect another?
21 Now at that very time he was curing many of diseases, and maladies, and evil spirits, and graciously bestowing sight to many who were blind.
22 And Jesus answering, said to them, Go and tell John what you have seen and heard; that the blind see; the lame walk; lepers are cleansed; deaf hear; dead are raised to life, and the poor have glad tidings proclaimed to them.
23 And happy is he who shall not be stumbled at me.
24 And when John's messengers were gone, he took occasion to say to the people respecting John, What went ye out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
25 But what went ye out to see? A man clothed with soft raiment? Behold they who are splendidly dressed, and who live luxuriously, are to be found in royal palaces.
26 But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and something more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, "Behold I send my messenger before thee, who shall prepare thy way for thee."
28 For I say to you, Among those who are born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the baptist, but the least in the kingdom of God is a greater than he.
29 All the people indeed, even the publicans, when they heard, justified God by submitting to the baptism of John;
30 but the Pharisees and the teachers of the law made null, with regard to themselves, the counsel of God, by not submitting to be baptized by him;
31 therefore the Lord said, To what shall I compare the men of this generation, and to what are they like?
32 They are like children who sit in the market place and call to one another, and say, We have played on the pipe for you, and you have not danced: we have sung for you songs of woe, and you have not wept.
33 For John the baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, He hath a demon.
34 The son of man came eating and drinking; and you say, Behold a gluttonous man and a wine bibber; a friend of publicans and sinners.
35 But wisdom is justified by all her children.
36 When one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he had gone to the Pharisee's house and placed himself at table,
37 behold a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, took an alabaster bottle of myrrh,
38 and standing behind, at his feet, weeping, she first bathed his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the tresses of her hair. Then she kissed his feet and anointed them with the myrrh.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said within himself, if this man were a prophet, he would know what sort of a woman this is, who toucheth him; that she is a sinner.
40 Thereupon Jesus addressing him, said; Simon, I have something to say to thee. And he saith, Teacher, say it.
41 A certain creditor had two debtors. The one owed him five hundred deniars; and the other fifty.
42 And as they had not wherewithal to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them, therefore, said he, will love him most?
43 To which Simon replied, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave most. Jesus said to him, Thou hast judged rightly.
44 Then turning towards the woman, he said to Simon, Thou seest this woman? I came to thy house: Thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she with her tears hath washed my feet, and wiped them with the hairs of her head:
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since I came in, hath not ceased kissing my feet.
46 My head thou didst not anoint with oil: but she hath anointed my feet with myrrh.
47 For what reason? I tell thee. Her sins which are many, are forgiven her; therefore her love is great. But he to whom little is forgiven, hath little love.
48 Then he said to her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 Upon this, they who were at table with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins?
50 Thereupon he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee, Go in peace.

John 11:2-16
John 11:3-16
3 The sisters, therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Sir, He whom thou lovest is sick.
4 Upon hearing this, Jesus said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that by it the son of God may be glorified.
5 Therefore though Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus,
6 yet when he heard that he was, sick, he then stayed two days in the place where he was.
7 And after that he saith to his disciples, Let us go again to Judea.
8 The disciples say to him, Rabbi, very lately the Jews sought to stone thee, and art thou going thither again?
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walketh in the day he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:
10 but if any one walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him.
11 Thus he spake, and after that he saith to them, Our friend Lazarus is composed to rest; but I am going to wake him.
12 Thereupon his disciples said, Master, if he is composed to rest, he will recover.
13 Now Jesus spoke of his death; but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
14 Therefore Jesus then told them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 And on your account that you may believe, I am glad that I was not there. But let us go to him.
16 Upon this Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let us also go that we may die with him.

John 12:2-8
2 And a supper was made for him there; and Martha waited, and Lazarus was one of them who were at table with him.
3 Mary then having taken a pound of the balsam of spikenard, unadulterated, very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus when she had wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the odour of the balsam.
4 Upon which one of the disciples, namely Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, who was about to deliver him up,
5 said, Why was not this balsam sold for three hundred deniars, and given to the poor?"
6 Now this he said, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the purse and carried off what was put into it.
7 Therefore Jesus said, Let her alone. She hath kept this for the day of preparing my body for burial,
8 for you have the poor always with you; but me you have not always.

John 15:22-24
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 He who hateth me, hateth my Father also.
24 If I had not done among them works which no other did, they would not have had sin: but now, though they have seen, they have hated both me and my Father.

John 21:15-17
15 So when they had breakfasted, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him, Yes, Lord, Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my lambs.
16 Again he saith to him a second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith to him, Yes, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Tend my sheep.
17 He saith to him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved that he said to him, the third time, "Lovest thou me," and he said to him, Lord thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith to him, Feed my sheep.

4 Whereupon Peter and John having fixed their eyes on him, Peter said, Look on us.
5 Upon which he looked earnestly at them, expecting to receive something from them.
6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold I have none. But what I have, that I give thee. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, rise up and walk.
7 Then having taken him by the right hand he raised him up. And instantly his feet and ankle bones were strengthened;
8 and leaping up, he stood; then walked and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

22 for Moses indeed said to the fathers, "The Lord your God will raise up for you from among your brethren a prophet like me. To him you must hearken according to all that he shall speak to you;

41 Then Peter giving her his hand, helped her up, and having called the saints and the widows, presented her alive.

Romans 3:1-3
1 What then is the superior privilege of the Jew, or what the advantage of circumcision?
2 Much every way. First indeed that they were intrusted with the oracles of God.
3 Well! what if some have been unfaithful? Shall their unfaithfulness make void the faithfulness of God?
4 No, by no means. Yea, let God be true, though every man be a liar, as it is written, " So that thou must be justified in thy acts and must overcome when thou art judged."
5 If then our unrighteousness established the righteousness of God, what shall we say, Is not God unjust who taketh vengeance? I speak as a man.
6 No, by no means. In that case, how shall God judge the world?
Romans 3:23
Romans 4:5-8
5 But to him who doth not work, but believeth in him who acquitteth the ungodly, his belief is placed to account for righteousness.
6 As David also saith in respect to the happiness of the man to whose account God placeth righteousness without works,

1 Corinthians 1:21-28
21 For when, amidst the wisdom of God, the world did not, by means of that wisdom, know God; it pleased God by the foolishness of this proclamation to save them who believe;
22 so when the Jews demand a sign and the Greeks seek wisdom,
23 as for us, we proclaim a crucified Christ; to the Jews indeed a stumbling block, and to the Greeks foolishness;
24 but to them who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God;
25 because this foolish thing of God is wiser than men, and this weak thing of God is stronger than men.
26 For observe, brethren, this call of you, that there are not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many of illustrious birth;
27 but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world God hath made choice of to put to shame the strong
28 and the ignoble of this world, and those of no account, God hath chosen; nay, the very nothings, to put a stop to the operation of the things which are,

2 Corinthians 1:17-20
17 Did I then, in purposing this, use fickleness? Or what I purpose do I purpose according to the flesh, so that with me there may be the yes, yes; and the no, no?
18 Now as God is faithful, our word to you was not yes and no.
19 For the Son of God, [namely] Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you by us namely by me, and Silvanus, and Timothy, was not yes and no; but by him hath been made yes.
20 For all the promises of God are in him yes, and in him Amen, for glory to God through us.

10 For godly sorrow operateth to produce a reformation for salvation, never to be repented of; but the sorrow of this world worketh death.
11 For behold! this very thing; your being affected with a godly sorrow, what solicitude it hath wrought in you! nay, what apologies! what indignation! what fear! what longing desire! what zeal! what avengement! By your whole conduct you have shewn yourselves to be clear in this matter.

4 But if any widow hath children, or grand children; let these first learn to respect their own household, and to make suitable returns to their parents; for this is good and acceptable in the sight of the Lord.

James 2:5
James 2:14-26
14 What is the advantage, my brethren, though one should say he hath belief, when he hath not works? Can that belief save him?
15 Suppose a brother or a sister be naked, or in want of daily food,
16 and one of you should say to them, go in peace: be warmed, and be fed to the full; and you do not give them the things necessary for the body, is this any advantage?
17 Just so it is in respect to this belief, if it hath not works; being by itself it is dead.
18 One indeed may say, thou hast belief, and I have works. Shew me thy belief by thy works. As for me, I will shew thee my belief by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well. The demons also believe and tremble.
20 But wouldst thou, vain man, know that belief without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham, our father, justified by works when he offered up his son Isaak on the altar?
22 Thou seest that his belief co-operated with his works, and by his works his belief was perfected.
23 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, "Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him for righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God.
24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by belief only.
25 In like manner also, was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, having secreted the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without spirit is dead, so belief without works is dead also.
