Now when Jesus was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
there came to him a woman, having an alabaster box of precious balsam, which she poured on his head while he was at table.
At seeing this, his disciples expressed indignation, saying, Why this profusion!
For this balsam might have been sold for a great sum, and given to the poor.
Jesus, knowing it, said to them, Why trouble ye the woman? For she hath done a good office for me.
For you have the poor always with you; but me you have not always.
For in pouring this balsam on my body, she hath done it to embalm me.
Verily I say to you, In what part soever of the world these glad tidings shall be proclaimed, mention will also be made of what she hath done, for a memorial of her.
