For with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. ¹⁴ And Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him for a period of one month.

³⁰ For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.

¹⁷ which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

¹ And the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite: For I have provided Me a king among his sons."

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: And the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

¹³ Therefore Saul removed him from himself, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

² Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, you were he that led out and brought in Israel: And the LORD said to you, You shall feed my people Israel, and you shall be a captain over Israel.

⁷ In all the places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel spoke I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, "Why build you not me a house of cedar?

⁹ Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad: For who is able to judge this your so great a people?

⁷ Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, For as much as I exalted you from among the people, and made you prince over my people Israel,

⁷¹ From following the ewes that were pregnant with young, He brought him to feed Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance.

¹¹ He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

² "But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you He shall come forth to Me that is to be Ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."

⁴ And He shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD His God; and they shall abide: For now He shall be great to the ends of the earth.

⁶ 'And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the princes of Judah: For out of you shall come a Governor, that shall rule My people Israel.' "

⁴ And when he brings forth his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him: For they know his voice.

¹¹ Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: And Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, "The LORD has tore the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, that is better than you.

³ And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do: And you shall anoint to Me him whom I name to you."

¹² And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and at the same time of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him: For this is he." ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: And the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

¹⁸ And the two of them made a covenant before the LORD: And David abode in the woods, and Jonathan went to his house.

¹⁷ And the LORD has done to Himself, as He spoke by me: For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David:

⁴ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, "That the men of Jabeshgilead were those that buried Saul.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: And they anointed David king over Israel.

¹⁷ And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD's people; between the king also and the people.

³⁰ And his servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulcher. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father's stead.

³ And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said to them, "Behold, the king's son shall reign, as the LORD has said of the sons of David.

¹⁶ and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,

²¹ and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

¹⁷ And I have said, 'I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.' " '

⁸ And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: And the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:

⁶³ As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

²⁸ and Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

²¹ And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

¹⁰ But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came in front of Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two donkeys saddled, his concubine also was with him. ¹¹ And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, Come, I implore you, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it. ¹² And his master said to him, "We will not turn aside here into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.

²⁶ And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, "What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"

³⁶ Your servant slew both the lion and the bear: And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God."

⁹ So David dwelled in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built all around from Millo and inward.

¹⁰ So David would not remove the ark of the LORD to him into the city of David: But David carried it aside into the house of Obededom the Gittite.

¹² And it was told king David, saying, "The LORD has blessed the house of Obededom, and all that pertains to him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obededom into the city of David with gladness.

¹ Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the fathers of the children of Israel, to king Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion.

⁷ And David dwelled in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.

² Beautiful for how it is situated, the joy of the whole earth, is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the Mount Zion which He loved.

⁵ For there are set the thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.

¹ A Song of degrees. Those who trust in the LORD shall be as Mount Zion which cannot be removed, but abides forever. ² As the mountains are all around Jerusalem, so the LORD is all around His people from this time forward, even forever.

¹³ For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His habitation.

²⁰ But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.

¹⁵ And this is the reason of the levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and Megiddo, and Gezer.

²⁷ And this was the cause that he lifted up his hand against the king: Solomon built Millo, and repaired the breaches of the city of David his father.

²⁰ And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goes down to Silla.

²⁰ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the LORD was with him.

⁴ For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: For this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.

⁹ The righteous also shall hold on his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

⁷ Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, on the throne of David, and on His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from now on even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

¹⁰ Fear not; for I am with you: Be not dismayed; for I am your God: I will strengthen you; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.'

¹⁴ Fear not, you worm Jacob, and you men of Israel; I will help you' ", said the LORD, and your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

³¹ What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

²¹ And Abner said to David, "I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my lord the king, that they may make a league with you, and that you may reign over all that your heart desires. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

⁸ These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite: He lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. ⁹ And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away: ¹⁰ He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand stuck to the sword: And the LORD worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil. ¹¹ And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentils: And the people fled from the Philistines. ¹² But he stood in the middle of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: And the LORD worked a great victory. ¹³ And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam: And the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁴ And David was then in a hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. ¹⁵ And David longed, and said, "Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate! ¹⁶ And the three mighty men broke through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: Nevertheless he would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD. ¹⁷ And he said, "Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: Is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men. ¹⁸ And Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief among three. And he lifted up his spear against three hundred, and slew them, and had the name among three. ¹⁹ Was he not most honorable of three? Therefore he was their captain: However, he attained not to the first three. ²⁰ And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he slew two lion like men of Moab: He went down also and slew a lion in the middle of a pit in time of snow: ²¹ And he slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: And the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear. ²² These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among three mighty men. ²³ He was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three. And David set him over his guard. ²⁴ Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, ²⁵ shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite, ²⁶ helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, ²⁷ abiezer the Anethothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite, ²⁸ zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, ²⁹ heleb the son of Baanah, a Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai out of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, ³⁰ benaiah the Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash, ³¹ abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, ³² eliahba the Shaalbonite, of the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, ³³ shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite, ³⁴ eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, ³⁵ hezrai the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite, ³⁶ igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, ³⁷ zelek the Ammonite, Nahari the Beerothite, armor-bearer to Joab the son of Zeruiah, ³⁸ ira an Ithrite, Gareb an Ithrite, ³⁹ uriah the Hittite: Thirty and seven in all.

³ Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

³⁸ All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: And all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

²¹ Of the three, he was more honorable than the two; for he was their captain: However, he attained not to the first three.

⁴ And over the course of the second month was Dodai an Ahohite, and of his course was Mikloth also the ruler: In his course likewise were twenty and four thousand.

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongs to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.

¹¹ And after him was Shammah the son of Agee the Hararite. And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a piece of ground full of lentils: And the people fled from the Philistines. ¹² But he stood in the middle of the ground, and defended it, and slew the Philistines: And the LORD worked a great victory.

²³ So the LORD saved Israel that day: And the battle passed over to Bethaven.

⁵ For he put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel: You saw it, and rejoiced: Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?"

¹⁰ He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand stuck to the sword: And the LORD worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil.

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance to Syria: He was also a mighty man in valor, but he was a leper.

⁵⁰ He gives great deliverance to His king; and shows mercy to His anointed, to David, and to His seed forevermore.

¹⁰ It is He that gives salvation to kings: Who delivers David His servant from the hurtful sword.

³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle: But safety is of the LORD.

¹⁵ the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

¹ David therefore departed from there, and escaped to the cave Adullam: And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down to him at that place.

¹⁸ The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

⁴ And all Israel heard reported that "Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel was also held in abomination with the Philistines." And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

²³ And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.

²⁵ Saul and his men also went to seek him. And they told David: Therefore he went down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued going after David in the wilderness of Maon.

³ Therefore with joy you shall draw water out of the wells of salvation.

¹⁴ But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."

⁶ And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, "We have sinned against the LORD." And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

⁶ Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm: For love is as strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: The coals of it are coals of fire, which has a most vehement flame.

²⁴ But none of these things move me, neither do I count my life dear to myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received from the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

¹³ Then Paul answered, "What makes you weep and to break my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if One died for all, then all were dead: ¹⁵ And that He died for all, that those who live should no longer live to themselves, but to Him which died for them, and rose again.

¹⁰ And whatever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eats any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people.

¹⁸ Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that risked their lives to the death in the high places of the field.

¹⁷ (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:

³ And Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you.

³¹ If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! We cannot be satisfied.

¹⁴ He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: And their blood shall be precious in his sight.

²⁴ And He said to them, "This is My blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

⁵⁵ For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.

¹ What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? ² God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer in it?

⁴ Who have laid down their own necks for my life: To whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

³⁰ And why do we stand in danger every hour?

⁶ Then David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul at the camp?" And Abishai said, "I will go down with you."

³⁰ So Joab, and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

² And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

⁶ And David said to Abishai, "Now shall Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom: Take you your lord's servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fenced cities, and escape us.

¹⁷ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succored him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "You shall go no more out with us to battle, that you quench not the light of Israel.

¹⁶ Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.

⁸ But others fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.

⁴¹ There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: For one star differs from another star in glory.

²¹ And the uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Judah toward the border of Edom southward were Kabzeel, and Eder, and Jagur,

⁵ Then Samson went down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: And behold, a young lion roared against him. ⁶ And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore him as he would have tore a kid goat, and he had nothing in his hand: But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

³⁴ And David said to Saul, "Your servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: ³⁵ And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. ³⁶ Your servant slew both the lion and the bear: And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God."

²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

¹⁸ and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief rulers.

³⁸ So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride on king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.

³⁰ And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said to him, "Thus says the king, Come forth. And he said, "No; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, "Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.

³⁴ So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell on him, and slew him: And he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. ³⁵ And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: And Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.

⁸ And of the Gadites there separated themselves to David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;

⁵ The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: And in his course were twenty and four thousand. ⁶ This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty: And in his course was Ammizabad his son.

¹¹ For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bed frame of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

⁴ And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.6 cubits + 1 span equates to about 11' 9", or 3.57 meters; according to both Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary and Easton's Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Appendix VI.

⁷ And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: And one bearing a shield went before him.600 shekels weighs approximately 18.7 lbs, or 8.5 kg.

⁵¹ Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

⁵ And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.

¹⁸ And there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: And Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. ¹⁹ And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. ²⁰ Then Abner looked behind him, and said, "Are you Asahel? And he answered, I am. ²¹ And Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay you hold on one of the young men, and take you his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him. ²² And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn aside from following me: Why should I smite you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother? ²³ However, he refused to turn aside: Why Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: And it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

¹⁹ And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

⁶ And David sent to Joab, saying, "Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ And when Uriah had come to him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered. ⁸ And David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and not went down to his house. ¹⁰ And when they had told David, saying, "Uriah not went down to his house, David said to Uriah, "Came you not from your journey? Why then did you not go down to your house? ¹¹ And Uriah said to David, "The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing. ¹² And David said to Uriah, "Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart. So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day, and the next day. ¹³ And when David had called him, he ate and drink before him; and he made him drunk: And at sunset he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but not went down to his house. ¹⁴ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ And he wrote in the letter, saying, "Set you Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire you from him, that he may be smitten, and die. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah to a place where he knew that valiant men were. ¹⁷ And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: And there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also. ¹⁸ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; ¹⁹ and charged the messenger, saying, "When you have made an end of telling the matters of the war to the king, ²⁰ and if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say to you, Why approached you so near to the city when you did fight? Knew you not that they would shoot from the wall? ²¹ Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone on him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? Why went you near the wall? Then say you, Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. ²² So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for. ²³ And the messenger said to David, "Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field, and we were on them even to the entering of the gate. ²⁴ And the shooters shot from off the wall upon your servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. ²⁵ Then David said to the messenger, "Thus you shall say to Joab, Let not this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another: Make your battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: And encourage you him. ²⁶ And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. ²⁷ And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
