¹ And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, "Assuredly you know that you shall go out with me to battle, you and your men."

⁴ And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: And Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: And the Israelites pitched by a fountain which is in Jezreel. ² And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: But David and his men passed on in the rear-guard with Achish.

⁶ And the young man that told him said, "As I happened by chance upon Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

²¹ All you mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain upon you, nor fields of offerings: For there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

¹² And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:

⁸ And it came to pass on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.

⁵ You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them: For I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those that hate Me;

⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bore his armor, "Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised: It may be that the LORD will work for us: For there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few."

³⁹ For, as the LORD lives, which saves Israel, though it be through Jonathan my son, he shall surely die." But there was not a man among all the people that answered him. ⁴⁰ Then he said to all Israel, "Be yourselves on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side." And the people said to Saul, "Do what seems good to you."

⁴⁹ Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: And the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:

²⁹ In his days Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: And king Josiah went against him; and Pharaohnechoh slew him at Megiddo, when he saw him.

⁷ And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him with fetters of brass, and carried him to Babylon.

³³ And Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³⁹ And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

¹ The righteous perishes, and no man takes it to heart: And merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: They shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

²³ The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: ²⁴ But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from there comes the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel):

⁴ And David said to him, "How did the matter go? I implore you, tell me." And he answered, "The people have fled from the battle, and many of the people have also fallen and are dead; and Saul and his son Jonathan are dead also." ⁵ And David said to the young man that told him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?" ⁶ And the young man that told him said, "As I happened by chance upon Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. ⁷ And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, 'Here I am.' ⁸ And he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I answered him, 'I am an Amalekite.' ⁹ He said to me again, 'Stand, I implore you, upon me, and slay me: For anguish has come upon me, because my life is still wholly in me.' ¹⁰ So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen: And I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord."

¹⁴ Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:

⁵⁴ Then he called hastily to the young man his armor-bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

¹⁸ And he was exceedingly thirsty, and called on the LORD, and said, "You have given this great deliverance into the hand of your servant: And shall I now die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"

²¹ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

²³ Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice: For they said, "Our god has delivered our enemy Samson into our hand." ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they praised their god: For they said, "Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many of us." ²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, that he may make us sport." And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: And they set him between the pillars.

²⁶ And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, "What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?"

³⁶ Your servant slew both the lion and the bear: And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God."

⁴ Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised ones come and thrust me through, and abuse me." But his armor-bearer would not; for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

¹⁴ And David said to him, "How were you not afraid to stretch forth your hand to destroy the LORD's anointed?" ¹⁵ And David called one of the young men, and said, "Go near, and fall upon him." And he smote him that he died. ¹⁶ And David said to him, "Your blood be upon your head; for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have slain the LORD's anointed.' "

²⁰ Tell it not in Gath, do not publish it in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

²³ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and got him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulcher of his father.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king's house, and burnt the king's house over him with fire, and died.

⁵ And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

⁴ saying, "I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to that." ⁵ Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hung himself.

¹⁸ Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst apart in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out.

²⁷ And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had fled.

¹⁰ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was beaten, and every man fled into his tent: And there was a very great slaughter; for there fell thirty thousand footmen of Israel. ¹¹ And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell backward off the seat by the side of the gate, and his neck broke, and he died: For he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

²⁵ But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be consumed, both you and your king."

¹ For I considered all this in my heart, even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: No man knows either love or hatred by all that is before them. ² All things come alike to all: There is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices, and to him that does not sacrifice: As is the good, so is the sinner; and he that swears, as he that fears an oath.

¹⁰ I will be your king: Where in all your cities is any other that may save you? And your judges of whom you said, 'Give me a king and princes'? ¹¹ I gave you a king in My anger, and took him away in My wrath.

³¹ And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries to desolation, and I will not smell the smell of your sweet odors.

³⁶ And on them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursues.

³³ The fruit of your land, and all your labors, shall a nation which you know not eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed always:

⁴³ The stranger that is within you shall get up above you very high; and you shall come down very low.

² And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: And because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strongholds.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble, (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in high places, and in pits.

⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and those that were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelled in them. ⁸ And it came to pass on the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.

²³ And they said, "This is blood: The kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: Now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.

²⁵ And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: And they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much.

² Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink from them. ³ Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives and his concubines, drank from them. ⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

²³ but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you, and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them; and have praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know: And the God in Whose hand is your breath, and Whose are all your ways, you have not glorified:

¹¹ And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: And she brought it to her mother.

² When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. ³ And when those of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again. ⁴ And when they arose early on the next morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him. ⁵ Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day. ⁶ But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and He destroyed them, and smote them with hemorrhoids, even Ashdod and its borders. ⁷ And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: For His hand is heavy upon us and upon Dagon our god."

¹⁰ And they put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth: And they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.

¹ Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you." ² And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, "On this condition I will make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and make it as a reproach upon all Israel." ³ And the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel: And then, if there is no man to save us, we will come out to you." ⁴ Then the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and told the matter in the ears of the people: And all the people lifted up their voices, and wept. ⁵ And behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, "What ails the people that they weep?" And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. ⁶ And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. ⁷ And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, "Whoever does not come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen." And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. ⁸ And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. ⁹ And they said to the messengers that came, "You shall say thus to the men of Jabeshgilead, 'Tomorrow, by that time the sun is hot, you shall have help.'" And the messengers came and reported it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. ¹⁰ Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you." ¹¹ And it was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: And it came to pass, that those which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

⁴ And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, "That the men of Jabeshgilead were those that buried Saul. ⁵ And David sent messengers to the men of Jabeshgilead, and said to them, "Blessed be you of the LORD, that you have showed this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him. ⁶ And now the LORD show kindness and truth to you: And I also will requite you this kindness, because you have done this thing. ⁷ Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be you valiant: For your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

⁸ But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: And the name of it was called Allonbachuth.Allonbachuth; that is, The oak of weeping

¹⁰ And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: And he made a mourning for his father seven days.

³⁵ And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David swore, saying, "So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.

¹² And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa: ¹³ And he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan; and they gathered the bones of those that were hanged. ¹⁴ And the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulcher of Kish his father: And they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was entreated for the land.

¹⁸ You shall not allow a witch to live.

³¹ Regard not those that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

⁶ And the soul that turns after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. ¹¹ Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹² For all that do these things are an abomination to the LORD: And because of these abominations the LORD your God does drive them out from before you. ¹³ You shall be perfect with the LORD your God. ¹⁴ For these nations, which you shall possess, listened to observers of times, and to diviners: But as for you, the LORD your God has not suffered you so to do.

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly: You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you: For the LORD would have now established your kingdom upon Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not continue: The LORD has sought Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be captain over His people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you."

² Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He has also rejected you from being king."

⁷ Then Saul said to his servants, "Seek me a woman that has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman that has a familiar spirit at Endor." ⁸ And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: And he said, "I implore you, divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name to you." ⁹ And the woman said to him, "Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?" ¹⁰ And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, "As the LORD lives, no punishment shall happen to you for this thing." ¹¹ Then the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up to you?" And he said, "Bring me up Samuel." ¹² And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice: And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!" ¹³ And the king said to her, "Do not be afraid: For what did you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I saw gods ascending out of the earth." ¹⁴ And he said to her, "What form is he of?" And she said, "An old man comes up; and he is covered with a mantle." And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. ¹⁵ And Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disquieted me, to bring me up?" And Saul answered, "I am exceedingly distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do." ¹⁶ Then said Samuel, "Why then do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has departed from you, and has become your enemy? ¹⁷ And the LORD has done to Himself, as He spoke by me: For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David: ¹⁸ Because you did not obey the voice of the LORD, nor executed His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. ¹⁹ Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines: And tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me: The LORD shall also deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. ²⁰ Then Saul immediately fell headlong on the earth, and was exceedingly afraid, because of the words of Samuel: And there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day long, nor all the night.

⁶ And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: He worked much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

¹⁹ And when they shall say to you, "Seek those that have familiar spirits, and to wizards who peep, and who mutter": Should not a people seek their God? For the living instead of the dead?

⁹ But there was a certain man, called Simon, who beforehand used sorcery in the same city, and bewitched the people of Samaria, boasting that he himself was some great one: ¹⁰ To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the great power of God." ¹¹ And they had regard for him, because for a long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, that a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:of divination; or, of Python ¹⁷ The same followed Paul and us, and cried out saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, which show to us the way of salvation." ¹⁸ And this she did many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out the same hour.

¹¹ And the LORD said to the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? ¹² The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and you cried out to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. ¹³ Yet you have forsaken me, and served other gods: Why I will deliver you no more. ¹⁴ Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. ¹⁵ And the children of Israel said to the LORD, We have sinned: Do you to us whatever seems good to you; deliver us only, we implore you, this day. ¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not continue: The LORD has sought Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be captain over His people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you."

²⁸ And Samuel said to him, "The LORD has tore the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, that is better than you.

¹ And the LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go, I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite: For I have provided Me a king among his sons."

¹¹ And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your children here?" And he said, "There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he keeps the sheep." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and fetch him: For we will not sit down until he comes here." ¹² And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and at the same time of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look upon. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him: For this is he." ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: And the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

⁶ And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

¹⁷ And the LORD has done to Himself, as He spoke by me: For the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David:

⁹ So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD has sworn to David, even so I do to him; ¹⁰ to translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba.

³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: And they anointed David king over Israel.

²³ And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.

¹³ Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

⁷ However, he does not mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off not a few nations.

¹⁵ Shall the ax boast itself against him who chops with it? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shakes it? As if the rod should shake itself against those that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift itself up, as if it were not wood.

³ "Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face: Should I be inquired of by them at all? ⁴ Therefore speak to them, and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD; "Every man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts the stumbling-block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him who comes according to the multitude of his idols; ⁵ that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from Me through their idols." ' ⁶ "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD; "Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
