⁹ Be miserable, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom.

⁴ Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now: for you shall be filled. Blessed are you who weep now: for you shall laugh.

²⁵ Woe to you who are full! for you shall hunger. Woe to you who laugh now! for you shall mourn and weep.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus received evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation and leaves no regret: but the sorrow of the world produces death. ¹¹ For behold what earnestness this godly sorrow has produced in you, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what readiness to punish wrongdoing! In all things you have shown yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for the miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches have rotted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

⁷ As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, give to her that measure of torment and grief: for she says in her heart, I sit as a queen, and am no widow, and shall never see sorrow. ⁸ Therefore her plagues shall come in one day, pestilence, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.
