¹ My brethren, let not many of you be teachers, knowing that as such we shall be judged more strictly. ² For we all stumble in many ways. If any man does not stumble in his words, he is a perfect man, and able also to bridle his whole body. ³ If we put bits in the mouths of horses, that they may obey us; we guide their whole bodies. ⁴ Behold also the ships, which, though they are so great and are driven by such fierce winds, yet they are guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot directs. ⁵ Even so, the tongue is a small part of the body, and it boasts of great things. Behold how great a forest is kindled by a little fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity among our members. It defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the whole course of life; and is itself set on fire by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of beasts, and birds, and serpents, and creatures of the sea, are tamed, and have been tamed, by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue no man can tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. ⁹ With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. ¹¹ Does a fountain send forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water? ¹² Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olives? or a vine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring yield fresh water. ¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? by his good life let him show forth works done with the humility of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there is confusion and every evil work. ¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. ¹⁸ And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

⁵ Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. ⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

²² But I say to you, That whoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of judgment: and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.

⁴⁴ But I say to you, Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you;

⁸ But do not be called Rabbi: for one is your Teacher; and all of you are brethren. ⁹ And call no man upon the earth your father: for one is your Father, who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

¹³ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you do not go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.

²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and to swear, saying, I do not know the man. And immediately the cock crowed.

¹ In the meantime, when a great crowd of people had gathered, so that they trod upon each other, he began to say first to his disciples, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; nor hidden, that shall not be known.

⁴⁷ And that servant, who knew his lord's will, and did not prepare himself, and did not do his will, shall be beaten with many blows. ⁴⁸ But he who did not know, and committed things worthy of a beating, shall be beaten with few blows. For to whomever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask all the more.

Not a hair shall perish from the head of any of you. ³⁵ And when he had spoken thus, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in the presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. ³⁶ Then they were all of good cheer, and they also took some food. ³⁷ In all, there were two hundred and seventy-six of us in the ship. ³⁸ And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship by casting the wheat into the sea.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

²⁹ They were filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malevolence; whisperers,

⁸ But to those who are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath.

¹⁷ Behold, if you call yourself a Jew, and rely upon the law, and boast of your relationship with God,

²⁰ An instructor for the foolish, a teacher of infants, having the embodiment of knowledge and truth in the law: ²¹ You, therefore, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? you who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?

²³ You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonour God by breaking the law? ²⁴ For as it is written, The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you. ²⁵ For circumcision is truly of value, if you keep the law: but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has becomes uncircumcision. ²⁶ Therefore, if the uncircumcised keeps the requirements of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? ²⁷ And shall not the physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the law, judge you, who, though you have the letter of the law and circumcision, are transgressors of the law? ²⁸ For he is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; neither is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh: ²⁹ But he is a Jew, who is one inwardly; and circumcision is of the heart, by the spirit, and not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

⁶ Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, who are being brought to nothing: ⁷ But we speak the wisdom of God, once secret and hidden, which God ordained for our glory before the ages:

¹⁴ But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him: neither can he understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

³ For you are still fleshly: for while there is among you envy, and strife, are you not fleshly, and walking as mere men?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their own craftiness.

² Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. ³ But with me it is a very small thing if I should be judged by you, or by any human court: in fact, I do not even judge my own self. ⁴ For I know of nothing against myself; yet I am not by this justified: but he who judges me is the Lord. ⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time; before the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the things hidden in darkness, and will disclose the motives of the heart: and then every man shall have his praise from God.

⁷ For who makes you superior to another? and what do you have that you did not receive? now if you did receive it, why do you boast, as if you had not received it? ⁸ Already you are full, already you are rich, you have become as kings without us: and I would that you had become kings, that we might also reign with you.

² And you are puffed up, and have not mourned instead. Let him who has done this deed be removed from among you.

¹² For our boast is in this: the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and still more toward you.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive what is due him for the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

²⁴ Therefore show to them, before the churches, the proof of your love, and the reason for our boasting about you.

²² But the scripture has declared all to be prisoners of sin, so that the promise, given on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

¹⁷ For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are in conflict with one another: so that you cannot do the things that you wish.

²⁰ Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, fits of rage, selfishness, dissensions, factions, ²¹ Envy, drunkenness, orgies, and the like: of which I forewarn you, as I have also warned you in the past, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. ²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ Gentleness, self-control: against such things there is no law.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with all spiritual blessings in the heavenly places:

² With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love;

¹¹ And he gave some as apostles; and some as prophets; and some as evangelists; and some as pastors and teachers;

³ But sexual immorality, and all impurity, or covetousness, must not even be named among you, as is befitting saints; ⁴ Nor let there be filthiness, or foolish talk, or coarse jesting, which are not proper: but rather giving of thanks.

¹⁹ Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

⁸ Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are admirable; if there is any virtue, and if there is anything worthy of praise, think on these things.

¹⁰ That you might walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please him in all things, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

²⁸ Him we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.

¹ Now the Spirit expressly says that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

¹² Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to the believers, in word, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
